Was excited to try out this new place at Bridgeport Village, a Japanese sando shop. It's a walk-up and we ordered a chicken sando combo with dirty fries, the tofu sandwich combo with regular fries and a spicy tofu sandwich with dirty fries and milk bread pudding for dessert. The dessert came out first so we ate it - it had a really nice caramel sauce and it was heated up. The flavor was rich and reminded me of my mom's bread pudding growing up and the portion size was huge. The sandwiches arrived and boy, we were surprised by the fries. We didn't really look at the dirty fries ingredients while ordering. Lots of unusual toppings but delicious. The soda selections were also fun, old fashioned flavors like vanilla cream and root beer. Everyone enjoyed the food but the price was pretty high - $84 with tip. There is an additional charge of $5 for the dirty fries and while they were tasty, not worth the price. read more

I went to this place twice; first on a weekend in 2023, and then again on a weekday mid-2024. The first time, the lines were out the door, and service was understandably slow. My last visit was just as if not somehow slower, and I received someone else's order. Furthermore, they were out of tonkatsu, which was communicated by a piece of tape on the menu outside. Despite the service, I think the Katsu sandwiches are good for what they are, but not at the inflated price point of $15 for a single sandwich. Each solid component of the sandwich: bread, lettuce, and katsu, are all lackluster. To me, the sauce and egg salad/mayonnaise is what carries the sandwich. The interior itself is nice, but can be somewhat messy as you approach the serving window. Next to the pick up, there are buckets of sauce cups with a sign that says "DONT TAKE ASK AN EMPLOYEE", which makes you wonder why its there in the first place. All in all, it's a middling experience that could be improved. There are better options in the mall for a better price. read more

We ordered Tanaka Dip and Spicy shrimp katsu around 3pm for snack. Shrimp sandwich was good, probably getting the frozen one and deep fried on site, which was as expected. Tanaka dip was not satisfying, greasy and disappointing to me because the breading was almost 10mm thickness while the beef was 2 mm slice, as if they were using thin sliced meat for hotpot. For a native Japanese (born and raised in Japan), it was not at all enjoyable. I am also aware if they made it more authentic, they cannot serve it at this price point either... I had high hopes for Tanaka but ended up being disappointed. I ordered the chicken Sando and katsu Cesar salad. The chicken sando tasted bland and tough. The salad on the other hand was worse. On the menu they describe the salad really nicely . But in reality, it was just really boring. They forgot the dressing and the chicken was so so bland. I could not taste any seasoning. So basically I was just handed a bowl of leaves to eat. With no flavor. You are better off somewhere else trust me. read more

The fish was blasted from deep freeze to 1000*F of oil, full of water inside, not flavorful, not spicy..... it just tasted like fried panko crumbs. Don't waste your money on a pretend Japanese sandwich. My wife had the chicken katsu and she said it tasted like fried rubber. Service on a not terribly busy Sunday afternoon was slow and perfunctory. Not terrible. Not great. I'll chalk it up to Black Friday hangover and give them the benefit of the doubt. The food however was terrible. And I was expecting a certain level because of how much I loved the downtown Portland location. The chicken nuggets were badly overcooked, tough and dry and not salvageable by sauce. The kale slaw barely had kale and was overly dressed in mayo. Inedible. Pork katsu sandwich was nothing to write home about. Not the same experience as the other location. I was so looking forward to tucking into my red bean filled donut after waiting so long for the mains. They should have called it yuzu filled, because that is all it tasted of. Also the oil tasted distinctly of fish. Either old oil gone rancid, or it rested on the same drip trays as fried fish, not sure. Half of my meal went directly into the landfill. Do not recommend. Came here on a whim after spotting it during shopping. The katsu nuggets were yum. Their dipping sauces were delicious! We tried the spicy pork katsu sandwich, and it was very flavorful but I didn't expect them to just sprinkle the hot seasoning on the top of the cut halves of the sandwiches and call it. Would be better if it was actually incorporated into the katsu itself ? I didn't like how my first bite into the sandwich was full of the hot seasoning and nowhere else in the sandwich. Pricey for what you get. May not be filling for some if you're just eating the sandwich. The yuzu donut was tasty as I love yuzu everything but it would taste even better if it was less sweet. The miso chocolate chip cookie was delicious. Matcha cookie was not enough matcha flavor. Hard to get a seat during the rush, may have to wait or do outdoor seating. read more

Walking in I had very high expectations for the food, the price point for a meal which includes Fries and a drink was 20$ a little over priced since the sandwich is kinda small . Now for my first bite I was a little disappointed the food wasn't bad but I don't think I would go out of my way to come eat here again. Service was good kind employees. The location it self is very nice but a little too crowded. But it doesn't hurt to come try it for your self if you have been meaning to come ! This is just my personal opinion:) read more

I did stop by here not long after it had opened so it was slammed but I thought their food was pretty good. It was expensive as most places are now, so based on what you get, I'm not sure it's worth the price but their fries are solid and I did enjoy the sandwiches even though a bit messy. My girlfriend tried some of their dessert and liked it but I don't think she was entirely impressed. I might stop here again sometime if I'm in the area but I wouldn't actively seek this out, only if I'm looking to spend a decent portion of money. read more

I went for dinner tonight at 740 PM on a Sunday. The posted hours say that it is open until 8 PM. We came in and the cashier said that our order had to be to-go only; we had hoped to eat in. Soon after we ordered to-go (because required), the cashier locked the front door, at about 745 PM. So "closing at 8 PM" really means closing around 730-ish. Not cool. The whole family headed to Tanaka at Bridgeport Village for lunch. Tanaka is a new restaurant and is known for their katsu sandwiches. Both my son and I ordered the fish katsu sandwiches made with rockfish. My son's sandwich was spicy; mine was classic. They were excellent; I loved mine! My husband ordered the spicy pork katsu sandwich; my daughter had a spicy chicken katsu sandwich. One comment about the sandwiches; the "spicy" version of the sandwiches definitely has some kick to it. My daughter loved the spice level as spicy food is her thing, but, if you aren't into spicy food, stick with the classic sandwiches. We also split an order of fries and had plenty for the family. The fries came with a tasty curry aioli. In terms of lines, we waited about 10 minutes in line around 11:45 on Saturday; by 12:30, the line was incredibly long. There is seating inside at longer shared tables and smaller tables as well as some outside seating. As for ambiance, the restaurant is bright and airy with floor to ceiling windows on two sides and greenery (plants) handing from the light wood grid ceiling and adorning the area separating the kitchen from the seating area. In terms of cleanliness, the staff was quick to clean up tables as patrons left. They were also friendly. We will definitely be back. It's okay. The flavors are good, staff not super friendly but that's fine. It's extremely quiet in there, no music or anything but very cutely decorated. The only thing that made me sad was it says on the menu their katsu sandwiches like the chicken one for example has egg salad on it as well. But when I received my sandwich it was missing that portion. Just feels a lil expensive for a chicken cutlet some sauce and cabbage. But again flavors are great, especially the aioli that comes with the fries. Will probably come back to try again. read more

Been here a handful of times and the food is average at best. The sandwiches are nothing special and deserves 3 stars. However, I advise anyone to steer clear of the spam musubi as it deserves 1 star. Ordered a spam musubi for $6, which is extremely overpriced in my opinion. What they served was a refrigerated, cold musubi filled with rock-hard rice. Brought it back to the counter and another employee told our server 'You're supposed to microwave it.' Our server responded and said 'It's about preference.' Who in their right mind wants to eat a hard, cold musubi? They proceeded to throw it in the microwave and handed it back. The cookie tasted like a normal chocolate chip cookie. We got the pork katsu and egg salad sandwich, pork was juicy but the sauce had horseradish and was so inconsistent that some bites had none and others were pure horseradish. I almost gagged eating it because it was so strong. The same could be said for the egg sandwich. Overall not the best experience and I had high hopes for it. I wasn't a fan of the wasabi and/or heavier mustard ingredients...... I only ate 1/2 of the sando since I wanted to eat my fries.... The fries were good, but I didn't finish much since I lost my appetite on the 1/2 egg salad sando.... The bread was yummy for sure and the ingredients in the sando were fresh. I looked at the sandwiches other customers had on their table and they looked decent so I ordered a spicy chicken katsu sandwich. What arrived in front of me was a sandwich with burnt bread. It was the darkest shade of black-brown it could be before being black charcoal and it was burnt on all sides, inside and out. The other customers around me had a light gold toast to their bread. There is no way any cook of any level should be sending out burnt bread. If you burn it redo it it's not that hard and there's no excuse for giving a customer burnt bread because you can literally see that it's wrong. It's not like it's a subjective taste issue. I returned it for a refund because that kind of disregard to the food being served is hard to give a second chance. Also for a place where you order at the counter and then sit in hard uncomfortable chairs in a sterile environment devoid of any personality $15 seems like a rip off for a sandwich with no sides. This experience made me realize if I'm going to spend $15+ dollars for a meal I would rather go to PF Chang's next door for better food, service, ambiance, seating, etc etc. And to be fair PF Chang's isn't even that great sometimes but I'd still rather go there.
