I've been here twice now since they opened and am a fan since I no longer have to venture to Portland for their sandos. The sandwiches are really filling and are great for sharing since they cut it in half. My only gripe is the katsu is a really thick cut of pork. It's cooked really well and remains juicy all the way through but the pork to bread ratio is a little off for my liking. I also tried the yuzu donut which was SO good. The yuzu cream is light which makes the donut not too sweet or heavy. I like how spacious the place is too. Lots of seating inside and outside that looks over the center area of Bridgeport mall. I'm glad more pdx businesses are expanding out to the suburbs because parking can be such a pain in the butt downtown. Hoping more businesses will follow suite. read more

The place is pretty busy, and we put our order in and none of the workers seemed to be very happy about being there, which made the experience a little kind of offputting. We got the chicken, Katsu, Sando, and the pork katsu sando. The sandwiches had a decent flavor, but the meat was a bit on the driver side and also pretty small overall. The Katsu wasn't very crispy. We also got the toasted egg sandwich literally just tasted like unseasoned eggs. It was pretty creamy though. The service was also a bit chaotic as our food is ready, and I saw the server make a few laps until I finally decided to chase her down to get my order. I will say the chocolate donut was really good. Overall rating: 3.5/5 I came in on a Monday around 11AM and it was rather quiet. You could walk up and order so if you're looking to try tanaka for the first time, I'd come in on a weekday if you can. Despite it being a slow time, the food took around 15 minutes to come out. Then again, I wouldn't quite consider this fast food. The spicy chicken sandwich was filling and good but not great. Probably not something I'd ever crave. The katsu nuggets were good as the proportion of breading to chicken was *chefs kiss* I was pretty skeptical about the curry aoli but it ended up being pretty tasty! The time it took to wait in line to order and receive my two items took over an hour. 2. It was around 12:30 PM and they told me they were already out of fries. 3. When I heard of this new sando place, I was not expecting the ambiance that it has. It's a very casual, order at the counter and bus your own table type of atmosphere. Now for the food, we got the fruit sando which was good! And the pork katsu sando which I thought was pretty good too but the katsu was tiny for what I paid for. It also had either a wasabi or horseradish sauce on the sandwich which was very overpowering; I typically love a good burn with sushi but I'm not sure if I liked it in my sandwich where every bite I had to pinch my nose because of the burn. Having recently been to Japan, was looking forward to some good sandwiches. Tanaka is a new edition to Bridgeport Village right in the center of the square. They have a number of sandwiches available including pork katsu (regular or spicy) which is my favorite. Other options include chicken katsu, tofu, fish. There are also some pre-made fruit sandwiches and egg salad. A little salty possibly, but a good lunch. I think sandwiches were somewhere in the $17 range which is a little more than I would expect for a lunch sandwich. They have several bakery options and coffee. Soft drinks are self-service - Stubborn soda brand. The ambience is nice. Large area of seating inside and then an outside area as well. Open kitchen and you can see staff preparing food. Staff were friendly. You go in, order at the counter, get a number, sit and then food is brought to you. Definitely a nice option! read more

I've finally got to try a Japanese sando! I went here with my friend. The restaurant is counter service and you bus your own tables. They got a case of additional pastries like donuts and fruit sandos. I ordered the spicy pork katsu sando. I made it a "combo" which included the fries and a soda. The sandwich itself is soooo good except I probably won't get the spicy next time. It has a wasabi-like taste which I'm not a fan of. The pork itself was nice and crispy. The bread was soft and tasty. The fries were amazing! Super crunchy. It came with a sauce on the side that had a zing to it. My biggest complaint is their prices. Very expensive for what it is. The inside is very spacious with lots of seating for big and small groups, and very clean (there's also outdoor seating)! My brother and I came here before watching a movie and there needs to be more traffic here cause it's very good. We both got chicken katsu sandwiches and an order of fries. The sandwiches were delicious. Flavorful and crispy with some great spice from the spicy katsu sauce. The fries were also great, and they were served with what I thought was mustard, but tastes like a curry spice fry sauce and is incredible. While we were eating, the server brought over a desert dish called Honey Toast that they are going to be serving soon, and we were very fortunate to be the first to try it. It had ice cream, a green tea whipped cream, red bean paste, strawberries and honey on toasted bread. It was easily the most delicious thing we had today. If you get anything, the honey toast was a must buy. The service was excellent , the place is clean and has a nice chill vibe. I do want to say the inside was incredible clean and a great environment. The service was great but when it came to the food..... I was a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong the spicy chicken sandwich tasted great but the size/portion you get is incredibly underwhelming. Keep in mind this combo meal was $22 and I was still hungry, the sandwich alone is $15 and don't get me wrong it tastes good but the portion isn't at ALL worth $15. So I just started a new Job. I am now working at the CVS PHARMACY in Lake Oswego. I am super psyched about it...i have the knowledge already, just have to go though the traditional training procedures. On Monday I was sitting at the computer doing those fun learning modules when the staff pharmacist put a cool gold and white plate down next to me. It had something that resembled Saturn that you might expect in a solar system display, except instead of rings it has a ring of what appeared to be fluffy goodness around it. "Cream Puff", she said. I was like, "Alrighty then". After a couple minutes I couldn't take it anymore. I took a bite. It was delicious the cream was well creamy but it tasted like there was crystallized sugar and maybe some chocolate chips in there too. The pastry itself was amazing. It was firm to the tooth at first, but then it seemed to melt away into nothing. I didn't have a napkin but I managed. I will definitely be making a visit in person soon. read more

This review is limited to this location. The food is very tasty and consistent. The issue is with the staff and lack of coordination or training received. They seem to be understaffed and it takes an average of 30-40 minutes to get your order- this has been the case during the last 3 times we've visited. We ordered Tanaka Dip and Spicy shrimp katsu around 3pm for snack. Shrimp sandwich was good, probably getting the frozen one and deep fried on site, which was as expected. Tanaka dip was not satisfying, greasy and disappointing to me because the breading was almost 10mm thickness while the beef was 2 mm slice, as if they were using thin sliced meat for hotpot. For a native Japanese (born and raised in Japan), it was not at all enjoyable. I am also aware if they made it more authentic, they cannot serve it at this price point either... The fries had different and unique sauces you can try them with. All which were delicious. I had high hopes for Tanaka but ended up being disappointed. I ordered the chicken Sando and katsu Cesar salad. The chicken sando tasted bland and tough. The salad on the other hand was worse. On the menu they describe the salad really nicely . But in reality, it was just really boring. They forgot the dressing and the chicken was so so bland. I could not taste any seasoning. I visited the Bridgeport Location of Tanaka a couple of days after it opened. It is located in the heart of Bridgeport, between the J. Jill and MAC stores. There were play areas for kids near Tanaka's patio--I could imagine it would be a fun place to enjoy lunch while your kids play nearby. I waited about 20 minutes in line and about another 15 minutes for my food, which I took to-go. There was plenty of seating both indoors and on their patio and the restaurant had lots of natural light. I loved the wood accents and hanging plants inside. While waiting in line I passed by a case of donuts, sweet and savory pastries, fruit sandos, and loaves of freshly-baked Shokupan for purchase ($5/loaf). I chose the Tanaka Combo, which included a sando, side, and fountain drink. I ordered the tofu katsu sando, a caesar miso salad and a vanilla cream soda from their selection of Stubborn fountain drinks. The sandwich was delicious: savory and tangy and the Shokupan (milk bread) was fluffy but held up well to the sandwich fillings. The caesar salad was also tasty--there was plenty of parmesan, which for me is a prerequisite of a good caesar. The team members were all pleasant and seemed excited to be there--Tanaka definitely had that "new restaurant" buzz. The line was long and so was the wait for food, but I thought it was worth it! The combo came to $18 + tip, which seemed a little pricey, but I would come back here as a treat or if I were meeting up with a friend. And I would love to try some of their donuts! The fish was blasted from deep freeze to 1000*F of oil, full of water inside, not flavorful, not spicy..... it just tasted like fried panko crumbs. I went to this place twice; first on a weekend in 2023, and then again on a weekday mid-2024. The first time, the lines were out the door, and service was understandably slow. My last visit was just as if not somehow slower, and I received someone else's order. Furthermore, they were out of tonkatsu, which was communicated by a piece of tape on the menu outside. Despite the service, I think the Katsu sandwiches are good for what they are, but not at the inflated price point of $15 for a single sandwich. Each solid component of the sandwich: bread, lettuce, and katsu, are all lackluster. To me, the sauce and egg salad/mayonnaise is what carries the sandwich. The interior itself is nice, but can be somewhat messy as you approach the serving window. Next to the pick up, there are buckets of sauce cups with a sign that says "DONT TAKE ASK AN EMPLOYEE", which makes you wonder why its there in the first place. All in all, it's a middling experience that could be improved. There are better options in the mall for a better price. read more
