They offer Chinese/hunan dishes, appetizers, and fun cocktail drinks. The dining area is large, and they have a karaoke stage with a live singer on certain days. But contrary to the bright neon lights, the music was pretty mellow, which made it easier to talk to one another. I came here with a party of 12 for dinner and we were seated right away. They have an extensive menu, including a special lunch and dinner menu with dishes for $11.99 each. Our group got the party menu for 8-10 people for $328, which included 10 of their dishes. I enjoyed the variety and the display, but it may not be worth it if you don't enjoy all dishes. Some dishes include chicken gristle, steamed tilapia, hunan chili pork, frog meat. If these aren't your jam, it's probably better to select the dishes individually, especially if you can't handle spicy! Hunan dishes contain lots of chili and is often pretty oily. I was looking for a skewer place and found Tang Dynasty on Yelp. I went to the website and made a reservation for a Saturday night dinner for two. The reservation was approved within minutes. When we walked in, the place was actually a bit empty with many open tables. The menu mentioned live music on the weekends, but when we arrived around 9 PM, there wasn't any live music. We tried a couple of items; the best was the stir-fried string beans, followed by the secret pork, which is essentially pork belly. Mini Lamb (4/5): This was much better than the beef because it was fatty. Mini Beef (3/5): The meat was too lean, making it very chewy and tough. Secret Pork (aka Pork Belly) (5/5): This was the first skewer dish served, and it set the bar high. There was enough fat on the pork to make it juicy, and the seasoning was on point. Garlic Vermicelli Scallops (4/5): The amount of garlic really saved the dish; however, the scallops were very small, so it was not as satisfying. Grilled Mantou Slices (3.5/5): This was what we expected, but not the best mantou I've had. It passed the bar but didn't exceed expectations. Grilled Toast (3.5/5): This is more of a dessert--grilled toast with condensed milk. It's good as it is, but not what we were expecting. We were hoping it would be more savory rather than sweet. Maybe this is a personal preference thing. Stir-Fried String Beans (10/5): We wanted some veggies, and they ran out of snow peas, so this was our backup. However, this was soooooo good. She was playing mahjong with her friends near the entrance and the all the tables are inside. We asked the server ( she was sweating too ) to adjust the AC but the owner told the server not to, cause the owner said she didn't feel hot at all. Came back for the stinky tofu, left feeling disappointed. I used to really enjoy Tang Dynasty, especially for their Changsha-style stinky tofu. Unfortunately, this visit didn't live up to my expectations. While the service and atmosphere were still decent, the food--especially the tofu--was a letdown, which is why I'm giving this place 3 out of 5 stars. Ambiance: 3.5/5 The space is clean with decent lighting and seating. However, I think the vibe could be improved with better music--90s-era Chinese pop was playing the whole time, and it didn't really match the energy of the restaurant. Some updated or lo-fi instrumental would've helped set a better mood. Authenticity: 3/5 I came back specifically for the Changsha Stinky Tofu, hoping for the crispy, bold flavor I remembered. Sadly, the tofu this time was soggy with no crisp exterior, which took away from the authentic experience. Honestly, I don't understand the hate for this restaurant. There aren't many places open late these days, especially post-COVID, and they've got huge TVs for watching whatever game is on. They also post a lot of happy hour deals on their Instagram, making it a great spot to hang out with friends. I really like their skewer selection, especially since they use a charcoal grill. The garlic eggplant and corn skewers are my favorites, and I love getting a bunch of snacks to enjoy while watching a game or listening to old-school music I haven't heard in years. When we were there, this big group approached us and gave us free multiple shots and wanted to vibe. Of course we joined in the fun. I tell you this though, it wasn't no hazy night. Responsibilities. Came here on a weekday for dinner with some friends and it was completely empty. It remained empty throughout our entire meal too. We got the whole place to ourselves. All the staff was just sitting around so we got pretty good service and food came pretty fast. The food was alright, but not so good that it was memorable. Tang Dynasty is in a small shopping center adjacent to the San Gabriel Hilton. Tucked away in the corner, with a very cute outdoor patio, this is a modern Chinese restaurant with food based from the chefs hometown. I attended an event here and had ten wonderful dishes. Staff were quick and attentive to accommodate our party. The eggplant with preserved egg was an interesting dish that I've not had combined together as I usually have black bean sauce eggplant or the preserved egg with pork congee. The salt and pepper chicken wings were perfectly crispy and had a nice kick. The beef with cilantro was the spiciest of the bunch. The steamed tilapia was my favorite dish. Located on the 3rd floor of the Hilton plaza, we stumbled onto a quiet and empty restaurant at 5:30 pm on a Friday. There was top 100 pop music playing loudly over the speakers and in the corner of the restaurant is a mini stage with some big screens, microphones, and speakers. Something tells me this place can get wild in the evenings but I wasn't there to witness it for myself. I wasn't there for entertainment. I was strictly there for soju and something to munch on in between shots. Luckily, Hunan cuisine pairs extremely well with Korean spirits. Who knew? I ordered the lamb skewers, stir fried beef, and fried quail. Lamb skewers: I was shocked at how little meat there was per skewer but given the price point (under $10), it wasn't too bad. Flavorful but again, wish there was more to nibble on per stick. Stir fried beef: Though well seasoned, this was soooo salty! We ordered a side of rice because there was no way we can get through the dish without it. I liked the balance of cilantro with the beef. Fried quail: takes a bit for this to arrive. A bit dry because it was overcooked but it was still tasty. I liked how they provided seasoning for you to sprinkle on the meat. This is my new favorite spot for Chinese skewers! We went on a Friday night and there was plenty of parking and no wait. The service is great, server is super attentive and food came out fast. For skewers, we got the secret beef, secret lamb and corn skewers. We also tried other dishes like potato dry pot, stinky tofu, grilled oysters and scallops. My favorites were the stinky tofu, we ended up ordering 2nd one because of how goood it is. The interior of the restaurant is also super cute with a lot of traditional Chinese decorations. Great service, great atmosphere for groups, late night snacks, dinner, drinks, and skewers! I absolutely loved the fish w/pepper and perilla. It's a sour miso slightly spicy soup. It's comforting and tasty. If you like sour soups, this is one you should definitely try. Careful that there are whole pieces of fish including the bones. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of the abalone but it was so tasty. Perfectly charred and seasoned. The stinky tofu was different. It's charred, crispy, and spicy. It's garnished with hot sauce, pickled string beans, cilantro and parsley. It's tasty, but I miss the pou tsai (pickled cabbage). This spot is located on the 3rd floor with all the string lights. Tang Dynasty takes over the space vacated by Chang An in the San Gabriel Hilton shopping plaza. They kept the interior decor the same and added a karaoke stage. The food has become a bar menu and is Hunan pub cuisine. Lots of drink specials and shots. After a long drive from NorCal we met my Daughter C and some friends there to give them a try. We started with a try of shots and beers. I didn't know what they were but they were all sugary fruity. We ordered a bunch of items: Seafood platter : shrimp, crawfish, abalone, crab, sea cucumber, and scallops. All items were good but not worth the price. Stinky tofu Sautéed potato strings Smashed garlic eggplant Sautéed A Choi Hunan spicy fish was very good. The service was spotty with the Karaoke host helping out the servers. Located on the third floor of the Hilton Plaza, Tang Dynasty is a fun place to hang out at night. They have a huge menu of Hunan food and drinks (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and I'm told they have karaoke as well. Food wise, everything tasted great! The scallop vermicelli came topped with a super garlicky mixture and was the perfect bite sized snack. However, the star of the show was the griddled hand ripped cabbage which was nice and crisp, a lil' buttery, and came with plenty of sauce for your rice. Just a heads up - they mean it when they say something is spicy. I can handle a pretty decent level of spice but the cumin lamb had me blowing my nose. Tasted really good but it did burn more than I expected. What makes this spot more of a nighttime hangout spot are their fun cocktails and alcoholic beverages! My friends and I shared the kaleidoscope - a selection of yuzu, lemon, strawberry, and peach shots - which looks great for photos. The yuzu and lemon were refreshing and tasted just like the real fruits, but the strawberry and peach did taste a bit artificial. The only downside of this spot is that the service is hands off. You order through your phone, they bring you your food, and they don't really check in. They come by if you make eye contact but given that this spot is kinda pricey, I would've liked a more hands on approach to help explain the menu and what they specialize in. read more

Their stinky tofu is on the stinkier side and delicious with chili oil and cilantro. The potato dry pot is flavorful and perfect with a bowl of rice. The crawfish was the only one I would pass on- the sauce was good but it didn't really simmer into the crawfish unless you dip it after you peel it. Overall, pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem! The preserved egg, eggplant and pepper served in a mortar with attached pestle was my favorite dish here. I've never seen preserved egg mixed with eggplant but realistically, the preserved egg didn't add too much to the dish. There was a heavy taste of garlic that matched well with the dish. The other dish that everyone liked was the stir fried cabbage. While it is swimming in oil, the flavor was extraordinary. I've never had cabbage that packed that much flavor. The Hunan stir fried beef was also full of flavor, filled with chili and cilantro flavors. The salt and pepper chicken wings were also great. The stinky tofu and intestines pot was also good, reminding my wife of 五更腸旺, something that she misses. The Changsha stinky tofu was deep fried and actually quite bland for stinky tofu. It is definitely less fermented than its Taiwanese analog. One of the party members tried it and didn't realize it was stinky tofu. So if you're scared about stinky tofu but am curious, then this would be a good initial foray into the land of stink. We tried several skewers. They were fine but a little underwhelming. The fried rice is fine but could have used more salt. Things that we might consider in the future would be the sweet and sour ribs and the pork ribs. All in all, almost everything here was spectacular. Yes, things are a bit oily, but the flavors are worth it. read more

This place is located upstairs, and look for the neon signs. None of the signs said Tang Dynasty though. You order on the ipad, including asking them for water. They're pretty quick with the water when you ask. We ended up getting this big seafood platter, that had scallops, shrimp, crab and a lot of crawfish. The crawfish was a bit dry, but whatever the scallop noodle thing that was on the platter was yummy. If you check in, you get this agar jelly dessert/drink thing which I thought was excellent and it was my favorite thing I ate. I wish I was able to order something else, but we were celebrating and got the seafood platter since the person who we were celebrating liked seafood, and that seafood platter was HUGE. It can probably feed 5-6 people, but we had 4. I wish they gave us plates to throw the shells/etc so when i called the button to ask, he said to just put it on the table, which is kinda gross, but I was like.. okay if you wish. take makes it harder on them lol we also asked when they had live music, but i think there was a language barrier but he kind of said we could go up? TERRIBLE service. We had a 530 reservation for a large birthday party - when we arrived they took 30 minutes to seat us, and another 45+ minutes to even start bringing out drinks and small bites. We had 20 people standing around for an HOUR with nothing but ice water. The waiters were quite nice - they just seemed out of their depth and inexperienced. A birthday surprise we had arranged (dessert w/ candles, note, balloons) never showed up. My item names will do them no justice, but that's all I got. Apologies ahead of time. First off, the food there was good, a very astute taster can actually taste the short period of time various items were in the freezer for (it imparts this unmistakable alkaline freezer taste), but if you were less astute, you wouldn't really notice it. I mainly tasted it on the sea cucumber, and possibly the scallop, I forgot which. First off, the service here? Horrible. Did the waitress wait on you? No, she was more of a "wait, res-ting". Walked the 50 meters that was the length of the bar table between my table, and where she rested at least like 7 times. I had to go there for water, I had to go there for forks, I had to go there for napkins. In fact, I asked for forks in 3 different languages and 5 if you count sign and body language, she didn't get it until the 10th time. Each time, I grew more and more exasperated, like.. why is "fork" such an alien concept to you, restaurant staff? Then she hands me a plastic one. The plastic one was dropped to the floor, so... I had to go back for a metal one. Then, I discovered one of the bowls we were handed, had someone else's left over food in it, so... I brought it back to the waitress, and handed her the dirty bowl, let her know about it, and asked for a new one. She gladly accepted it, and then, looked and waited. We were staring at each other for about a minute, before I broke the silence with, "Um... the bowl?" at which point, she went to get me a new one. Like... The HELL? I think I probably went back there again for a to-go box, and maybe back there again for the bill. I've never met restaurant staff that cared less about service. I have however met the owner of Qin West, and yes... she has cared even less, but to her credit, she's a single person running both the counter, and the entire kitchen at the time, she was all frowns prior, then she expanded to three restaurants, and I saw her smile for the first time ever at her third one. In sum, would I come back? Possibly, but... Definitely going to tailor my expectations accordingly. 6 Item Platter (4/5) Crawfish - I frankly prefer this crawfish over Boiling Crab, Kicking Crab, buffets. It has a szechuan twist to it, giving it a pepper based aroma, and a bit of a kick to the sauce. Crabs - It largely tastes like your typical Chinese restaurant crab of little meat. Shrimp - Fried skin shrimp. I think I eat this in a very slow, but tasty way. I first eat all the shell, legs, and tail parts, and then, I eat the meat. This way, in one way, I have pure shell umami, and in another way, I have the sauced up shrimp meat. Reminds me of the times where sushi chefs would fry the heads of a giant prawn and serve it in a soup, whereas the body would be part of a sweet shrimp nigiri piece. Scallop - Scallops don't leave impressions on me, so I can't say anything about this one, my guess is, it tastes like your average scallop, nothing to cry home about. Abalone - Same with the abalone, it tastes like typical Chinese oyster sauce abalone. Sea Cucumber - Slimy, a hint of alkaline from possibly being frozen, followed by more slimy-ness. Maybe some oyster sauce. To be honest, I recalled people telling me how expensive these things are, and what delicacy it is, and that's really the driving force behind me eating these things. Like it has the texture jello and mushrooms blended together, and kind of tastes like diluted a dilute jellyfish platter. I'd crave bacon maybe a hundred or a thousand times before I'd crave this once. Oyster Omelete (4/5) The oysters tasted fresh, and the omelete was moist enough where the two ingredients worked well together. I wouldn't think to put these two togethers, but, the taste wasn't as objectionable as I first imagined. Frankly, it tastes like chinese oyster, and eggs. To be more specific, oysters that used pepper, green onions, and soy sauce as flavoring, and then, eggs. Pork with Peppers (4/5) Personally, I like the one from Spicy City better, but, while my mouth says yes, my stomach and everything else is like... "No!" You can't really go wrong with cured pork and peppers. If you've walked passed a Los Angeles Dirty Dog, you know what I'm talking about. Fish soup (4/5) The soup was tangy and a bit sour, it also seems to have spiced with what appears to be serrano peppers, but it wasn't spicy (at least not to me), the broth did an excellent job taking away the fishy stench, leaving it's sweetness intact. The broth also served to keep the fish very oily and moist. This was actually a very enjoyable dish. All in all, I recommend this place, kind of. The food is good. The service? Trash. Like maybe take out? I don't know. I do imagine that if you sat directly in front where the waitress rests, you might get decent service, but man, even for asian places the service was BAD, I don't think you guys understand just how bad that is, it's almost like they're trolling you to find your limits. read more

Highly recommending this new local hangout spot! I cannot say their skewers are the best tasting in the 626 area as it is too spicy for my taste but their main dishes are very tasty, especially their black peppered beef and egg fried rice. This place is not cheap compared to other drinking establishments but their GREAT customer service trumps all surrounding locations. The owner and staffs are all VERY friendly and accommodating. This, to me, is very important as I would rather pay more to eat at a place where I feel welcomed than at a bar or restaurant where the staffs are lazy and appear mad at the whole entire world. It's super easy to find parking (underground) and they close late at 1am, which is a plus for us night owls. The only downside? Good place for large groups. Come here for the skewers. I recommend the secret lamb skewers. Shots were on the sweet side for me but the soju and beer are definitely decent price. I was surprised the Kung Pao Shrimp was very tender and the sauce was amazing. Salt and pepper shrimp was tasty. The wait staff are also very friendly. read more

The food here was good, but service could definitely be improved - as expected since they just opened. We had ordered a bunch of appetizers, but they actually came out last, after we were almost finished with the entrees. Not the best dining experience. We got several dishes but I honestly can't remember all of their names. One of the dishes was the eggplant with preserved eggs and that was pretty good. Not a huge fan of their stinky tofu. My favorite was the cabbage - loved the texture and the flavor. Overall, I would probably come back if someone else suggests this place. We got the beef and lamb skewers, and some fries - both were great. We recommended the spot to other attendees who enjoyed it as well.
