I have noticed the quality of food and service has gone down. The rolls come with lots of mayonnase based sauce. One thing I used to love about Tang's is that they do not put too much sauce to mask the freshness of raw fish. Now that is not the case. The appetizer calamari has gone down hill as well. Their pieces are smaller and the quality is not the same. It has very wierd texture now. Even the service was not that good last time. They barely checked on us, and when they did, they forgot to bring the stuff we asked for. There were no soy sauce on the table, and we had to get up and ask for a fork twice for my kid. All the things we should not have to ask for. It is unfortunate to see my favorite place this way. It is still a better place than other sushi places around. My brother in law raved about this place so naturally we had to have a family dinner here. They showed up at opening on a Saturday and there was already a line! We had a big party of 6 adults and 3 kids, and it's not the biggest place inside so we weren't seated until an hour later. Everything on the menu looked great, but we left it mostly up to our waiter and the sushi chefs. You can order a "board" and basically you get a selection of items (omakase style pretty much) of sashimi and various other bites. I love that they make enough so each person gets to try every single thing too. I couldn't even name every single thing we got, but our awesome server did. He went through everything in detail when it came out, so impressive. I wish I remembered his name, it was the best service! Every single thing we ate was delicious. The fun thing about omakase is you can try stuff you probably wouldn't normally get. We had some kind of creamy oyster dish and that was so good! But my top favorites would go to the creamy scallop spoon, lobster chips, brodies (the one with lemon), the tuna on Hawaiian rolls, the blossom balls...like I said, EVERYTHING was good! The quality of the fish is perfect too. My favorite roll was the Keto Roll because of the jalapeño, but I also liked the garlic sauce on the Hawaiian Roll. I just need a happy combo of those two rolls! I'm salivating just thinking about this meal again. It's a far drive for us but totally worth it. The hype is real. Best casual sushi restaurant rolls I've had easily in recent memory. We started with the seasoned edamame which was very good. Had some sort of chili pepper seasoning and also a soy-garlicky sauce that was just delicious. We were picking up the leftover pieces of garlic with our chopsticks after the edamame was gone. Wife had a veggie roll (cuc avo). Was standard veggie roll, she enjoyed it. I got the SJ Ally Day roll. If I remember correctly, there was tuna, cream cheese, hamachi, lemon, green onion, fried garlic maybe??, masago I think, And truffle oil. I was afraid the truffle was going to be overpowering but no, all of the flavors blended so perfectly. Fish was great and not cold!! Close to room temp how it should be. Presentation was also fantastic. Also had the rock n roll hand roll (eel, cucumber, avo) and it was packed. I don't think I've had a hand roll more stuffed before. Generous portion of eel, also very good. Service is really friendly and personable. Cool dudes and ladies working here. Will absolutely be back. I have heard a lot of good things about this place from friends and coworkers, so I decided to give this place a try. Walked in at around 5:30 on a Wednesday, got seated right away. By the time when we were done, the restaurant was packed so be reminded if you don't dine in early, you might have a small wait since it's crowded. Our server was nice, recommended some rolls when we asked. We got the Mclovin, fish lover roll, lobster chips, and albacore sliders. The sliders were flavorful, with a good thick cut of seared albacore and good amount of sauce but not too overwhelming. A little sad the bottom bun got soggy sitting there in the back since they bring food up all at once instead of separate dishes and serve right when they are ready. Lobster chips were definitely interesting. Lobster salad with sauce torched on a BBQ Pringle chip. Good textures and unique flavors. It was a must try as stated by a friend. Not sure if it was my favorite though. Onto the rolls. Fish were fresh, portions were definitely on the smaller end. The sushi rice was so densely packed and sour, it lost the fluffiness and all I taste was vinegar. I could not taste much of the fish. Mclovin wasn't my thing, but my partner liked it cause the sauce would help balance out how sour the rice was. Unfortunately not my style. Upon all the good things I've heard, and I've finally tried this place, I can say this is more like a better Mikuni, very Americanized. We came in to try their rolls because we've heard so many great things about Tang's from a friend and Yelp. We really never go to any other Japanese restaurants if there's a Mikuni's around. But we decided to give Tang's a chance. We ordered the Lobster Roll and the Diamond Roll. The rolls were okay but lacked the zing..... flavor! For me the Lobster Roll was blah. It needed something like spicy tuna or some spicy sauce or a thin slice of jalapeño. Something! The Diamond Roll had a little more flavor but it didn't make us say this is delicious! Before I forget to mention that when she brought us the rolls she asked if we wanted some ginger and wasabi. What? Did she think we ordered sushi rolls and not want that? If you are going to hold back the ginger and wasabi in case their customers weren't real sushi fans then at least ask that question before you bring out the rolls. Because she didn't I had to wait for it before I could even eat because I expect that to be brought out because I can't / won't eat until I make my wasabi shoyu mixture in my little dish. I had to watch her bring out drinks etc to another table while I waited for the ginger and wasabi. This tells me this restaurant isn't a place for real sushi lovers. The rolls with high quality fresh raw fish. We really didn't order rolls with that because we wanted to test the waters with rolls that didn't demand that. Rarely do I seek out sushi joints since it feels a bit pointless as a vegan to pay for seemingly basic food you can also pick up from the Trader Joe's frozen section and dress up yourself at home (ie edamame, kimpap, corn ribs, dumplings/gyoza etc) or to order the only 3 items that had forever been vegan anyway - avocado roll, cucumber roll, and miso soup. The reviews of Tang's Sushi regarding vegan options were a bit inconsistent, but given how highly others have spoken of this place, I figure it would be best to lean and see! Having spent a few years in Japan, I know Omakase is the way to go when enjoying sushi. It's not just about the food, but the experience and the interaction with the sushi master. So, that's what we did. We were warmly greeted by Brenden from behind the bar and he was eager to ensure a great dining experience. We already knew Tang's offered amazingly fresh ingredients, so my bf left it up to the chef to create a board for him filled with lobster and a variety of tuna. For me, I simply said to keep it vegan and that I wanted to taste their soy (tofu skin) wrap in the sushi roll. Brenden was quick to offer recommendations on what was vegan-accommodating and we added those to the order: 1) Seasoned Edamame- this was infused with that old-seasoned wok/cast iron flavor, garlic, soy sauce and some shichimi. I didn't initially think to order it but it was worth it. 2) Corn Ribs + scallion aioli (not vegan)- Chef whipped up two additional dipping sauces that were vegan friendly: mango chili, and miso "butter". All super tasty! We each enjoyed our own version of ceviche which had its own Japanese twist to it, set on a sheet of fried wonton wrapper. The vegan ceviche (not on the menu but is totally available upon request) had minced pickles of cucumber, tomato, and onion neatly piled on top of an avocado spread that had hints of yuzu and sweet Italian basil pesto. Tucked into this flavor bomb was a grilled spear of asparagus hiding underneath a sprinkling of pistachios. -who does pistachios in sushi? Apparently Tang's Sushi does and now I'm mad I've lived my life without it until now. As for the fish version, that disappeared quickly. Nothing to report except maybe the serving size could have been bigger for my bf so he could have more to enjoy it long enough to describe what eat ate! The omakase consisted of a flight of 3 types of tuna (sorry, I only know one was toro...) and lobster balls prepared 2 ways: one glazed & torched and set on a cheddar Lay's wannabe-Pringles potato chip (also genius!) and another with the lobster ball glazed & torched, sitting on top of a California roll. I swear my bf was crying tears of joy. There are photos of everything we ordered in case you'd like to try it for yourself. My vegan sushi roll of the moment consisted of the most perfectly cooked sushi rice rolled around inari, avocado, pickled cucumber and soy wrap. Draped over the top of the roll were thin coins of steamed sweet potato which were topped with julienne pickled veggies: carrots, cucumber and onions (think banh mi filling), sprinkled with more pistachios, micro greens and dressed in a sweet miso-shoyu dressing. So. Good. It was light, fresh and just what I was looking for. Gone are the days of sadly eating kappamaki and avomaki as the default vegan things. Yay! The service here was wonderful and if I lived closer, I could easily see myself being a regular here. The chefs are passionate about their craft and seem to take such joy in seeing the diner savor their creations. There was a lady next to us who was having a similar experience. The server was super friendly and was really cool. The food was beautifully presented, but the food feels too Americanized in that there was wayyy too much guacamole in their omakase. Having any guacamole in it at all is already a little unusual, but there was a looot in there and no one in my party was a fan of it.
