We wanted to try a new place while in Roseville. The wait was shorter at Uncle Dumpling compared to other dumpling places in the area, so we decided to stop here. We got the pan fried pork dumplings, jajang noodles, and fried green beans. The dumplings should come with the warning... they are so juicy that if you bite it a certain way you might create a mess. I recommend treating them like soup dumplings and taking a small bite out of the top to suck some of the juices before taking a bigger bite. My favorite dish was the green beans, greasy in a good way, well seasoned and with small delicious bits of pork for extra richness. My least favorite dish was the jajang noodles due to the sauce, but my partner liked it so it just depends on what you prefer. I probably wouldn't come back on my own but if I did, I would definitely get the green beans again. read more

Second time we have been here and it did not disappoint again! Put our name in on the wait list on our way and we didn't wait more than 5 min once we arrived. The staff were super friendly and attentive. And once we ordered the food came so quick. We had a variety starting with cucumbers and green beans. I love their version of the cold cucumbers, and their beef noodle soup is one of my favorites, along with the juicy pan fried dumplings! Came here on a Friday evening. They use yelp waitlist which is convenient. We had about a 15min wait. This place is located in a little strip of restaurants across the parking lot from some business buildings with plenty of parking. We ordered the xiao long bao pork soup dumplings, pan fried pork dumplings, garlic noodles with beef, scallion pancakes and green beans. The food came out very quickly. The soup dumplings were seasoned well with a good amount of soup. The skins were a nice texture. The pan fried dumplings also had a good amount of soup though I would have preferred a bit less breading. The garlic noodles were garlicky and parmesany. The scallion pancakes were flaky with a good crisp. Finally the green beans were nicely flavored with a crisp. Portions were also good sized. Their chili oil was quite mild but tasty. We stopped in because we were craving dim sum, and it was a solid experience. We ordered the xiao long bao, shumai, and shrimp dumplings, and they were all flavorful and well made. The restaurant is a bit small inside, but it's clean and comfortable. It's also in a great location, in the same plaza as Mia, Pera Mezza, and Paul Martin's, so there are plenty of dining options nearby. I personally prefer Yan Kee Dumpling across the way, but Uncle Dumpling is a great alternative if Yan Kee Dumpling has a long wait. We made a reservation for 5 on a Tuesday night but it wasn't really needed as the restaurant wasn't busy and we were seated right away. We ordered a PLETHORA of food but let me tell you, as quickly as we ordered, the food came out just as fast. Everything we ordered just hit, honestly no notes. Some of our favorites from the night were the Scallion Pancake (light and crispy, one of the best I've had), Salt & Pepper Fried Squid and the Stir-fry Green Beans. Random side caveat, we also had the Truffle Angus Beef Fried Rice, which was delicious. However, I don't think I'd recommend getting it for just 1-2 persons as it's quite rich. For reference, we got the regular variety so it might be different with the spicy version of this dish. We ordered to go. When we came home my 2 year old son was eating his noodles when he started crying. I pulled a piece of metal wire out of his mouth. Looked like itchy have been a metal bristle that they clean their grill with. I called right away. They said oh okay we will refund your noodles. Uh, my son's mouth was bleeding? Definitely one of the better dumpling places around town. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and got lucky finding a table for six, as the space is on the smaller side and mostly has smaller tables. Since it was our first time, we ordered a bunch of items to try. The pan-fried pork buns: were a highlight! Crispy on the bottom, soft on top, and filled with a clean, juicy soup that didn't have that heavy ginger taste. The soup dumplings xlbs had perfect, delicate skins and were incredibly juicy; the classic pork and the crab & pork were my favorites. The pork xlb had tender meat and was juicy, flavor was clean, the crab one is definitely for the seafood lovers, it has a nice SF umaminess too like a crab roe fishball lol. Other standouts included the spicy wontons in a great chili oil sauce and the truffle Angus beef fried rice, which featured surprisingly tender beef and a subtle, well-balanced truffle flavor. For dessert, the chocolate xlb, was excellent and tasted just like a strawberry Nutella crepe, though the matcha version was a bit too concentrated and bitter for my liking. unfortunately, Din Tai Fung has kinda ruined all other restaurants that serve XLBs for me. I dropped by Uncle Dumpling for lunch on a Saturday. There's a nice parking lot and, the collection of restaurants/stores in this little plaza give a nice vibe. There isn't a ton of seating inside; you kinda get an idea from some of the various Yelp pics.... and, there are a couple tables outside as well. The Food: - Pork Xiao Long Bao: this was fine...... I guess it's about as good as my memory of Journey to the Dumpling. Honestly, I'd say it's in the ballpark of goodness as the frozen Mila XLBs you can buy at Costco. again, Din Tai Fung has kinda ruined XLBs everywhere else I've gone since no one else comes close. - Spicy Pork Xiao Long Bao: this had an odd tanginess to it.. like there was a bit of kimchi in it or something... I didn't care for it (and, I do happen to love kimchi).. and, it wasn't very spicy either. pass on this one. - Spicy Wonton: this was probably the best thing I had here. it was fine. not particularly spicy. and a bit salty. but, it was fine. - Pan-Fried Juicy Pork Buns: I think the filling in this is the same as the XLBs... you just get it in a pan-fried bun instead. I think I actually preferred the regular XLBs bc the larger size of this thing made it kinda hard to eat. - Garlic Noodle: I don't know what I was expecting here... and, I know I shouldn't expect Crustacean (just like I shouldn't expect Din Tai Fung) bc this certainly wasn't anything like Crustacean. These were okay.... the flavor of oyster sauce dominated my palate in an unpleasant way. - Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings: these were okay. they ask if you want them spicy or mild. I got mine mild, but I probably should've gotten it spicy. The outside was nice and crispy, but the wing itself was kinda bland despite being covered with chopped garlic. Other things: - The food comes out fairly quickly & scalding hot..... so, don't burn your mouth! - I'd never really thought about it before, but every place that serves XLBs should also have spoons with flat bottoms; this place does not have flat-bottomed spoons. I like to rest my XLBs in my soup spoon while it cools, and since these spoons had rounded bottoms, my dumpling was always kinda lying sideways. - There's only one single-room unisex bathroom in the back, which is probably fine for the size of the restaurant; though, I did get stuck waiting behind a couple people when I needed to use it. so, I guess if you're not an XLB snob like myself & find Journey to the Dumpling and frozen Mila XLBs to be fantastic, then you may like this place quite a bit.... but I was rather disappointed.... read more

First visit to Uncle Dumpling at it sure won't be my last. Not only is this in a really fun and exploitable shopping center, Uncle Dumpling itself is decorated wonderfully inside and out. The service itself was great they were very attentive and friendly, always keeping empty plates off the table and checking on us. Everything also came out super quick and piping hot. The food, was decent.... The Jajang noodles were definitely a favorite but they did need quite a bit more spice for me, I loaded them up with chili oil. Interesting side bar about the chili oil, it's very mild here. I could never get enough to actually make my food spicy. The dumplings were tasty as well, the truffle version being the favorite over the standard pork. The S&P squid is actually quite fantastic and we found it to be even better dipped in the sauce that came with the beef shank. I just with the squid had some 5 spice. The local places I go to always have a hint of 5 spice in their S&P offerings and it gives it a nice extra depth of flavor. The desert Xio Long Bao were pretty great, nice little treat at the end. Things that stand out to me first, lacking a bit of selection here. There is no Shui Mai, one of our favorites so I would probably not be returning anytime soon, and there is also no steamed buns, which are my kids favorite part of Dim Sum. The interior is cozy and small, so the wait isn't a surprise once you see the crowd. The second I walked in, Cody C was very attentive and made sure I got seated and had what I needed right away. This included a menu, water, plate, chopsticks, napkins and a spoon. I was able to place my order in a reasonable amount of time. I had to get the scallion pancake, sesame balls, chicken dumplings and summer lychee tea. Everything was made fresh to order and tasted delicious. For a place so small, this is sure worth it! The interior is decorated beautifully. I love that customers can see what the kitchen is up to. I went right when they opened at 11 and was seated right away. During my time there, a big party of 6 showed up, there were a couple parties of 2 and a few to go orders. You can seem them working through the glass pane pumping out dumpling after dumpling. Offerings - Garlic Spinach: Exactly what it sounds like. Great flavor and not too much salt or other seasonings as compared to the other dishes. A good palette cleanser, if you will. - Pork Xiao Long Bao: Really thin dumpling skin, prone to breaking so be very gentle. The soup flavor was good and the meat flavor was more mild. I really liked that this restaurant does not follow the mainstream theory that salt = flavor. Especially for a Chinese restaurant, the sodium levels were lower than usual. - Pan Fried Dumplings: This was not my favorite. I have been spoiled by the SF market and was expecting a more distinct difference between textures. Here it was more of a bao based texture around the dumpling and lightly fried so it was more crispy at the bottom. I would also say the skin was more thick than usual in this dumpling. The flavor was good. - Mantou: Fluffy bao texture perfect for dipping in condensed milk. They achieved texture that was soft and pillowy but not sticky when consumed. Really great. - Shanghai Chow Mein: Wow, this was the star of the night. Thicker noodles cooked al dente?! And the sauce was so good. Definitely on the salty/savory side but really well balanced with sweet and umami flavors. There was not much pork in the dish and you could pay a bit extra to add more protein but the mushrooms were really excellent. It was like they were soaked or marinated in a sauce previously and really gave that protein element. - Chocolate Xiao long Bao: Yum!
