I've been here a couple times for family events/birthdays. The back room is rented out and there's been catering via Tanners for those events. They are located in a strip mall so there's plenty of parking. The building is pretty large and it has a darker aesthetic, very old, dive barish. They have lots of TVs throughout and a few games in the back room. They do have a decent sized patio. Bathrooms are moderately clean. The service has always been good and attentive. They have a decent beer list. I like that they have local options like JoCo Juice. But they do offer cocktails and soft drinks. The food I've had here has been pretty limited since it was for a party. Most of what I've had was fried-chicken lips, breaded mushrooms, and pickle chips. On my last visit, I found the pickle chips to be really salty and the breaded mushrooms were pretty flavorless. I don't think I'd order either on my own. The last set of chicken lips were dry and kinda burnt. It wasn't a great representation of the food because I like the chicken lips and these were not it. I definitely need to come back and actually order some fresh food and get what I want. I totally plan to do that in the future. read more

Located on 87th Street in Lenexa KS, Tanners is one of those places that straddles a few different lines. Dive-bar, Apple Bees clone, neighbor grill, sports bar and many other descriptive words but the question remains is it good? I'm not "chicken" to answer the question rather I'd prefer to let the answer "stew" a bit. As for the location it's in a very safe part of town with some very nice employees. I've been several times and being a guy, I'm happy to always get the attractive ladies to wait on me and keep the suds flowing as I get a bit tipsy. Moreover, on sports days (sorry I HATE the Chiefs) they don't have a bad TV in the house so the whole posse can wear those OBNOXIOUS Red and Yellow Jerseys. My family is from Ohio so I'm a Browns fan, thus we're utterly a miserable football experience. Anyways sports days are great to experience here. Now when I first moved to Kansas, I'd ask around, "where's a great place to go for good food, drinks and a good time?" They're response was Burger King, ok joking aside they said check out Tanners. However, what got me was "Ok a few things, first of all, they got great chicken lips, Taco Tuesdays and Thursday Steak nights." Wait.. WHAT!? What exactly are CHICKEN LIPS? I wasn't exactly enthusiastic about the possibilities considering the obvious mouth is a beak (use your imagination). In other words, like Rocky Mountain Oysters, it's clever marketing for chicken tenders. As stated the chicken tenders are pretty good, not store-bought generic tenders but hand breaded plump chicken deep fried. I'm not big on fries but my kids love them. Taco Tuesday is another day to drop by on a typically dead night for some cheap but flavorful tacos. I get like four hard shell and I'm all set. They're crispy with taco meat, lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream. Simple yet delicious. Now, Thursdays are steak night and out of the two times I went, get there early b/c they do sell out early. While they're not exactly Prime USDA choice cut huge steaks, they're discounted and good for the price, but avoid anything over medium rare. The drinks are best during happy hour to save a couple bucks too. Overall, this is a great place for the family or buds during the big game. The employees make the experience great and I've been to several locations and all of them are outstanding. I highly advise going during a night which they have a special that seems interesting. read more

I visit or order frequently. I like so many choices, but my favorites are hamburgers, tacos, and Ruben sandwiches, and chips and dip. I usually order a margaretta also. When I take someone with me I order the Ruben and tacos and then split the orders so we get both items. read more

We've been going here for over 30 years and it's just not what it used to be. Prime rib was not good at all. Service was poor. It seems the tables were the same after all of these years. They were sticky even when they were clean. Lenexa is growing with more dining options. They need to do better. read more

I've been going to this Tanner's location for years/decades. The food has always been consistent and typical bar and grill fare. I have 3-4 favorites. Best Reuben in town. Chicken Lips are delicious. I like mine fried and charred. Most of the wait staff have been there for years. Their service has been quite good. Rarely have I been disappointed. My only want... it's time to update the decor. Love all the TV's. Just been looking at the same view for 30 years. Needs a little modernization and some brightness. read more

Great patio, although it could've been a bit cleaner, great drinks (happy that Oktoberfest beer was on special,) great food (nice new additions to the menu like a black bean burger patty and a quinoa feta bowl,) and a wonderful server named Andy who took great care of us. The place is filthy. They don't even have hand towel dispensers in the men's room. What's worse is that the bartenders don't bother to give you permission to bring you another round.... But they use the same glass... for beer. Wow. I'm trying to process this... are they just so lazy that they don't want to clean glassware? I'm guessing so. If they were at their home... would they reach into their dishwasher and grab dirty dishes to serve their family? First time in the area and we stopped in after a search for restaurants in the area. The best choice on our trip!!! The food and service were amazing!!! Our server was attentive, friendly and helpful. We had the patty melt, Philly cheesesteak, southwest wrap, and fries - all were excellent and probably the best we've ever had. I have frequented other Tanner's lcoations in Kansas City and actually didn't even know this one was here. We stopped in on an early Saturday evening and immediately knew this experience would be different than the others. It is a dark, old school looking dive/sports bar and the seating was pretty open. We sat next to the arcade games (plus for my kids) and away from the loud football fans. The service was lackluster and had to keep looking for our server. While I don't feel like you can mess up fried bar food and burgers, the food overall just was not great. Lacked in flavor, was pretty over-fried and barely warm by the time it got to us. Probably a good spot to grab a drink and watch the game but would not be my choice based on the food. read more

The chicken lips are still to die for and the beer is always plentiful... it is why you go here... the Chicken Lips and the Boogas. And then to have a cold draft. The staff here not only was quick and courteous (a must in my book) but they were also down right friendly! And happy to pause a second and chat about nothin'. Came into town for the NFL Draft and got to spend some time at Tanners. First of all, a remarkable gem outside main KC. The biggest factor was our server Katie. She was extremely attentive who consistently and promptly was there to take orders for drinks and food. She was amazing, on a level that you do not find in the service industry these days. She was so proficient and professional, it was almost magic that as soon as we were in need, there she was. She is witty and a great conversationalist. Absolutely highly impressed with this place. And Katie was a big part of that reason. I very much look forward to coming back at every opportunity. If you are looking for a fun but low-key mellow establishment, I highly recommend. Ask for Katie as your server and it's impossible to be disappointed. You'll have an amazing time. 5 stars to the max. read more

Was with a large group over the lunch hour. There was plenty of seating at that time of day. The menu is pretty extensive considering this is a bar. I ordered a bunless Chicken Asiago burger with a side of veggies. I think I should have chosen beef. The real piece of chicken breast (not a patty) was round and thick and that can be a challenge to cook properly. It wasn't pink inside but sadly it was pretty dry. It had charred corners and I was glad it had cheese and bacon on it to help rescue it a bit. I would probably go with 2 stars, but there were two great things I wanted to note: 1) Our server was great. 2) The lady across from me ordered onion rings and they looked to be the most amazing thing ever. Tanner's is certainly not my favorite place in the world, but one of my friends practically lives there, so I find myself there often. I've had good and bad... I love to go on the Fridays when they have prime rib. The prime rib is what bumps them from a 1 to a 2 rating. I've had several issues with service -- they seem to pay better attention to the men at the table then the women. Sometimes, I'll have to tell someone in my party (male) to ask for a refill for me because I seem to be invisible. I even had a waitress have another employee come to me to complain about the tip we left (she didn't realize that we had left part in cash and part on the credit card), which I found unbelievable that someone would have the nerve to do that. The place is often too loud and dark and I was most horrified when accidentally being there once for trivia night and again when there was an Elvis impersonator, who besides being too loud was quite rude as he was setting up for his ridiculous show. Those of you who are full figured and red-blooded Americans such as myself will be happy to know the restaurant has invested in new chairs which are nice, comfy and quite sturdy. You won't have to worry about wobbling any more. Moving on and being a little bit more serious, the food, which is quite fitting for a sports bar, is still good and I highly recommend the chicken lips tossed in buffalo sauce. The tacos had plenty of ground beef (somewhat salty) and shredded chicken (very tasty), along with fresh lettuce, cheese, and salsa. The service was friendly, and attentive. my boyfriend, best friend, and I had a horrendous experience here. We had three different servers shuffling around our orders. Nothing was correct, nothing we asked for was taken care of and not to mention, when my drink was brought over, my cup smelled like bleach. The servers seemed more interested in talking amongst themselves and the regulars then taking care of our orders. As people in the service industry, we feel pretty passionately about tipping 25%, however, our service was so deplorable that we tipped what we thought was appropriate. Several days later, my boyfriend received this message on his Facebook (with information obtained from his first and last name credit card information on the receipt) with a threatening message from one of the servers telling us not to return if we were unwilling to tip more. We thought this was extremely unprofessional and ill-founded considering such an atrocious experience. We called the GM and were offered no compensation and no resolution for this threat; even after explaining the situation. We will not be returning here. We will not support people + business that condone threatening behavior and exposing confidential information. This whole situation was appalling and unprofessional. I met a friend today at Tanner's on 87th today, and while we were there a young lady brought a puppy in, walked up to the bar and set the puppy on the bar. The bartender picked up the puppy and took it behind the bar. A short time later the lady took the puppy back and left. My friend said the reason he had been reluctant to meet at Tanner's lately was because the last time he was there the same thing happened. I'm not sure, but I thought the health department didn't allow puppies on bars, but it appears it is common practice at Tanner's. It's not that I'm anti dog I have 3. It's just that I don't think they belong in bars much less on the bar. read more

I've been a consistent patron of this, my favorite watering hole, for nearly 15 years and love the drinks, eats and prices. I will share that it seems the quality of customer service has dwindled a bit since new ownership took over a couple years ago. Today was probably the worst - which still isn't horrible when it comes to bar & grill service. Our waitress clearly hates her job as she was inattentive and had the personality of a rusty thumbtack. I get that you may be acing a bad day but your job is being awesome at customer "servitude". If highly encourage training of the wait staff on customer service with a smile. Just left Tanners. Server asked us if we wanted refill on the soft drink and of course we responded with a 'sure'. The bill comes and we have $9 in soft drinks. Tell server there's a mistake on bill and she responds 'we charge for refills'. No mention EVER of that when she asked if we wanted a refill. No place ever does that anymore.
