Invited to Jake's located on Johnson Drive just west of Quivira on the South side. 'Night Run', a motorcycle group delivering toys for disadvantaged children within a four-state area in their trailers and trucks. Wrapped packages getting ready for Christmas giving. Jake's is a sponsor, so ate dinner while wrapping. The nachos were plentiful, chips very fresh and plenty of cheese and meat. Prices are very reasonable and service was excellent (Chris was our server). Will frequent this business more in the future both for their food/prices and their support of disadvantaged children. read more

Jake's place is a fun neighborhood hangout. I have only ever had the appetizers, but they are all great and also a little different than what you would typically see at a bar, i.e. traditional eggrolls. The service is fast and the drinks are cheap. This isa go to place for an after work hangout! read more

Came here for a drink one night. It's definitely a local hangout. There were about 12 people in here on a Saturday night. The drinks were reasonably priced, my hubby got the special which was some sort of burrito and said it was pretty good. I just didn't feel terribly welcome, it was very obvious we weren't "regulars" and the regulars are their bread and butter. read more

We've been to Jake's a few times in the past and I was never impressed with anything about it. But it's very close to "home" and they've got a great deal on burgers Thursday nights. So, last night our group of six headed over to Jake's and were received with a very unenthusiastic welcome. Actually, it wasn't until we started moving chairs around to make room for everyone at one table that anyone noticed us at all. A server finally wandered over with menus and let us know that Big Jake burgers were $3.75 and domestic bottles were two bucks. That was a good as it got on the service. Three of us sat for ten minutes in the middle of our meal with empty beers until we flagged her down to bring more. Maybe that's one reason the place was mostly empty on a night with a pretty good burger special. The burgers were better than I remembered and that's the only thing that salvaged our visit. Fries were just so-so. Jake's serves its burgers bare but has a table off in the corner that's supposed to be a condiment bar. I like being able to serve myself as much pickle and onion as I want but last night the table was a mess and didn't offer any tomatoes at all-I gotta have tomatoes. read more

I agree with CL on the chairs. Not the best. However, my waitress was. Very friendly. We came because of they were in the Shawnee Dispatch daily lunch specials with 75 cent tacos. We were in a hurry and out and about and hungry. Seemed like a reasonable way to go. I am usually one for the crunchy shell. However I would opt for the soft shells here. Also, not thrilled with the salsa, but it is doable. The meat was seasoned great with great dressing of lettuce and cheese. These by far are no mini tacos either. Jake's Place has some nice lunch specials. The taco Monday $0.95 beef hard shell tacos were very good. There were good amounts of tasty ground beef, fresh lettuce, and shredded cheese. The service was friendly, attentive, fast, and appreciative. Very nice for the price! read more

Tonight was my first visit. This won't be the most informative review you've ever read, but then again, I only came here for a couple drinks and to get some girl-time gab in. Like most bars, they had loud music (pop, think 93.3), but not so loud that I had to yell at my tablemate - it was reasonable. They had some weird seating. We chose a lower table, but it was kinda high for the odd, high-backed chairs that sat rather low. Two of our four chairs' plastic-y cushions were cracked, and the other two were badly worn. Ironically enough, my friend referred to the seats as "thrones" for their "fancy" shape...ehhh, but they weren't quite chairs for royalty. But like any bar, the most important details are the drinks and service. Our server was friendly, and the drinks were strong enough. Three cocktails ran $10.50. That's a good night in my book. A very typical, semi-divey north Johnson county bar and grill. The crowd is almost exclusively middle aged and probably middle class. It's popular with local motorcycle enthusiasts too. There seem to be a lot of regulars but everyone was pretty friendly to me. Not much in the way of drink selection but the prices are very reasonable. Well drinks were on special my last visit and the tab was six dollars and change for three drinks. I didn't try the food but the menu was classic bar and grill fare, with several kinds of burgers, chicken fingers, tacos and the like at reasonable prices. read more

I was asked to leave three times by the owner. The first time was because I was cheering for the Broncos (she apparently is from New England). The next time was because I was wearing a Bernie Sanders shirt and people asked me questions. The final time was because I didn't order a drink as soon as I walked in the door (I hadn't even sat down yet!). I have been sober for close to 15 years. Jake's is close to where I live and have brought many friends in there. No more. She lost a lot of business when she was so incredibly rude to me. Three times was more than enough. If you're looking for a neighborhood bar and grill that has it all, Jake's Place may be the place. Whether you're a member of a pool or dart league, like huge portions and daily specials, or are sports fanatic looking for a place to watch the game, the spaciousness and amenities at Jake's provide it all. Although there are daily specials, my two favorites are the steak and burger nights. Thursday nights bring the Big Jake hamburger and fries for $3.50. This huge burger will satisfy any beef cravings. More beef and more large servings come with the Friday night Ribeye or Strip steak dinner for $12.95. This comes with a salad and a potato large enough for its own plate. There's always plenty to do, as well. Friday nights host a dance contest that is at times hilarious, depending on the inebriety level of the participants. Or there's pool to play with free pool from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with a lunch purchase. Or for those who prefer to express themselves vocally, Wednesday night is Karaoke night. For those who want to sit and relax and watch a game on one of the numerous televisions, there is plenty of seating in either of the main rooms. With the smoking ban in Shawnee, Jake's has managed to maintain separate smoking and non-smoking areas so those who need to smoke with their drinks are accommodated. The only complaint I've ever had about Jake's are the large captains chairs around the big round tables in the main dining room. They're too low for the tables and not very comfortable. Other than that, it's a fairly varied crowd, the food is good, and there's always something fun going on at Jake's Place. read more

First time I've been to Jakes. We had a surprise 50th birthday party there last Saturday night. We had the 'pool room' reserved for the party, plenty of seating for everyone, and they had a taco bar for the guests. Everyone loved the tacos! Great food and reasonably priced drinks. Our waitress was great! she took care of the room (probably about 30 people +), and never missed a beat. She rans tabs for some of us, and had no problem remembering who ordered what. Excellent service. I had no idea what to expect when I arrived, and was pleasantly surprised! Great food, good music, I thought they all did an outstanding job! And everyone had a great time. This is probably one of the worst places I've been to as far as cleanliness goes. I'm certain I got an upset stomach from the one and only drink I had there. The cleanest place to sit was on the patio. My husband and I wanted to play pool but they didn't have enough sticks for two tables to play (two people were already playing at the other table).
