I also like getting their pad see ew, as it has a nice balance of sweet and savory flavors and lots of vegetables. Look at my name. Now look back at this review and know that I have some merit in saying that this is good Thai food. I moved to the SGV a little over a year ago and I have been sorely disappointed by offerings this nook of LA county has to offer *ahem banana bay*. I found myself driving to the SFV or Thai Town whenever I was too lazy to cook Thai food on my own. I decided to take a gamble with this restaurant and I am so very glad that I did. It's so good and authentic that I have come out of yelp retirement (Yelp Elite 2016-2020) to leave this review. I ordered four things as take out: Issan Sausage, Pad Kra Pow Minced Chicken, Spicy Fried Crispy Cat Fish, and Drunken Noodles. I was told that they were out of the Kra Pow Century Egg and stewed pork leg over rice. Hopefully, I'll get to try it next time! Issan Sausage: Good portions. Flavor is very good, a little sour, a little salty, and a hint of sweetness. I think the flavors could be a bit more bold with the sour but overall the flavors profile is as it should be. Frying it also added a nice crispiness to it. Spicy Fried crispy Catfish: Flavors were really good. Sweet foods is typically not usually in my flavor profile, but this is one of the few sweet entrees I actually like. Catfish can be a bit more fried but that is moreso a preference on my part. Drunken Noodle Beef: Good char on the noodles. Flavor was really good as well. Not that much beef but the star of the show are the noodles. I was a tad confused on the egg in my drunken noodle but to each their own. I would probably order it without the egg next time because it does change the texture a bit. Pad Kra Pow Minced Chicken: Now here's where it gets interesting! Tantawan actually uses holy basil (Kra Pow). It's harder to find but it has a very distinct flavor that Thai-American cuisine has for the most part substituted due to scarcity with Thai Basil (Horapha). I don't think you can get more authentic than actually using the right herb. Funnily enough, I think it can throw off people that have never had authentic Kra Pow as my partner said it tasted herbally. Thai food can be very hit and miss even among the Thai community as we all have different preferences when it comes to the holy trinity of sweet, salty, and sour. I am personally on the spectrum of sweet should be hinted at and never the forward flavor. Tantawan with the dishes I ordered definitely held to my flavor profile. Very well cooked and good flavor profile. I didn't have to add any seasoning as everything was cooked just right. I called my take out in and they said it would be ready in 20 and it was when I arrived. Even as the food sat in my passenger seat as I drove home I could tell from the smell emanating from the take-out bag that the food was going to be good. Quick and courteous service! read more

Food here is delicious. Level of spice adjusted well. Some items from their menu are not available on Uber Eats or other apps. I wish the description or explanation was better on some items. I ordered a tom yum noodle soup thinking it would taste like the tom tum without noodles but it did not. The service was terrible too! The only waitress was rude and even though she tried to be nice at the end, it was too late. This is the 2nd location of Tantawan, with the other being in West Covina. It's hard to believe they're the same restaurant. The decor in this location is lacking and dull. The service is mediocre as I have to remind them we need utensils, water ... etc. the staff doesn't seem to be too excited being here. The food here isn't as good as the other location either. The dishes we got on our past visits all lacked that Thai spice and flavor. It's very one dimensional. I have to go ask for condiments and peppers, only to be given 1 small to-go container of pepper, while I saw another table with 4 glass jars of various condiments. I really like Tantawan, but not this location at all. For me, it's worth the drive to West Covina for better, friendlier and more attentive service and way tastier food. read more

We used to drive out to Thai town or Thai temple, but now we have a good Thai restaurant in the neighborhood! We've had quite a few dishes from them. Thai fried rice, Tom yum soup, pork jerky, panang curry, drunken noodles, Thai sausage, papaya salad and it's all delicious! Don't be afraid to ask for your food to be spicy! I met my friend at Tantawan Thai Kitchen for lunch. Never been to the restaurant, but it was one of her go-to spots and I was excited to try it. I found the restaurant in a strip mall with several other businesses. I was worried about parking, but I was pleasantly surprised at the abundance of spots especially around lunch time. The restaurant was busy at noon, but we were able to get a table without any issues. Tantawan Thai had such a huge menu, and everything looked really tasty. I would've went for pad see ew, but the combo plates caught my eye. I opted for the chicken satay and shrimp plate, and my friend got the pad thai with tofu. I had a bite of her pad thai, which was great. Exactly what I expected from pad thai, and I liked how the noodles were nicely al dente. The good thing about my dish was that it was flavorful. Do not sleep on the sweet vinegar sauce with pickled cucumbers and peppers if it comes with your dish. So good! The bad part was the imbalance of protein. They give way more chicken satay skewers than they do shrimp. I only had 3 pieces of shrimp, but I guess you can say that the menu picture was an accurate representation of what you get since the picture only showed 2 shrimp. I've found chicken satay to be a hit or miss. In this case, I felt like more skewers were misses than hits because of how dry they were. But hey, smothering the peanut curry sauce on the skewers did the trick of masking the dryness with flavor. I was on a time crunch and needed to finish lunch in an hour. I appreciated how quickly our food came out, but it took longer to flag someone for the check. read more

Don't order this dish! The Pad Kee Mao was pretty solid. It was much better than the one we had at Thai Paradise in MPK. We would order it again here! We thought that Fish Cake was lovely! The wife and I devoured real quick. This was the clear winner of the meal. Honestly, I would rate the food a 3.5/5. I will round up to 4 as I gave Thai Paradise a 3 and the food here was a little better. I don't think we would be in a rush to come back here, but you wouldn't have to twist our arm to come back either. This place is more of a take-out spot. I wouldn't eat-in again. The food here used to be delightful. I came here a lot between 2020-2024. I took my mom yesterday and I was disappointed. The food tasted like low-grade Panda Express. The waitress was rude to my mom when she brought the soup over. She raised her voice at her stating, "Move your phone Ma'am!" My moms eyes bulged out because she was so shocked. We ordered 4 dishes and all were very flavorful and satisfying! Boat noodle broth is rich and full of meaty flavor. Not all places offer Thai boat noodle with liver as an added option for $2 extra. Some places come with it or some don't have it at all. I like that they have the option. It really gave the soup flavor an extra boost in my opinion but even without liver would've been great! Papaya salad with blue crab was amazing at medium spicy level. The crab here is the most lump and plush crab I've had in all papaya salad dishes I've ordered so far from anywhere. Most places that list blue crab on the menu just have tiny claws or mini crabs. We also got Rad Na chicken with gravy and a chili chicken lunch special. I'd heard a lot of great things about this spot but was always hesitant to try it out since it's in El Monte and let's be real, the Thai food scene around here isn't exactly known for being top-tier. But on a random Saturday, I came here with two of my buddies, still recovering from the night before and seriously craving some kind of comforting soup. We ended up trying the boat noodles, and honestly? They were fire. I've had boat noodles in Thai Town and Long Beach, and this place held its own. Tantawan Thai restaurant was an unplanned trip in Rosemead. It's located in an older plaza and front windows are overly tinted that gives the perception that the restaurant is out of business. The restaurant is cozy with older room scent but it is a welcoming spot serves up delicious Thai dishes with bold flavors. Whether you're a fan of spicy curries, savory stir-fries, or even duck on rice (more on that later). The staff is friendly and attentive, adding to the overall warm atmosphere. Green Thai ice tea - which is Thai ice tea with jasmine tea was too, too sweet. Very disappointed. Pad Thai is an absolute must-try. perfectly balanced with a hint of sweetness and spice. Claims Stir-fried - this is my favorite. The dish has a nice kick that builds as you eat. Plus, the portions are generous, Duck with rice plate. That was a bit ofd offered at Thai restaurant. We bypass this notion, we ordered it and my sister said it was decent. However, I was disappointed as the duck certainly wasn't prepared that day but had a 2-3 days older taste to it. Tantawan is by far my top 3 favorite Thai restaurants. Everything is great from the pad see ew and also the pork jerky with sticky rice and dipping sauce - perfect combo. The food at both Tantawan locations (Rosemead & West Covina) are so good. The prices are reasonable and the food and service are good. We mostly order take out. We call in and come pick up. The times we have ate there, service has always been attentive. The parking lot can get packed though. Especially with the new businesses across the street. You can choose the spice level and we asked for medium.
