We went here for my dads birthday ( me and him both have celiac disease) we new it was a risk but had heard that they had gluten free soy sauce. Later that night we both got very ill. I was very disappointed. The chef didn't seem to take the allergies seriously at all. We were going to share hibachi and everyone at the table was getting gf to make it easier. He used the gluten soy sauce and we caught him, he apologized and we asked for the others to get the gluten food and for ours to be made in the back. The food is always good! We come atleast once a month and have never had a bad experience. We always get hibachi. The chefs are very good at what they do and always have a good show! Something I noticed is how quickly they clear empty plates and place settings and they are constantly taking the dirty dish carts to the back. We went on a quiet Thursday right at 4:30pm and had the best experience. We were given the option for a grill table or typical dining and went with grill so my kids could see the flames. Our server never let our drinks go empty and even offered some water in the son's soda to keep the caffeine low. The food was excellent although the mushroom soup was a little fishier than other hibachi places. My daughter and husband had sushi which was excellent. We plan to go back soon! Let me start by saying this: Tanuki is one of my friend's favorite spots. And honestly? That's the only reason I ever come here. Now, there are some solid pros. The space is deceptively big. When you walk in, it feels tight and narrow--but then boom, it opens up into this cleverly divided, intimate setup. Tables feel private, and somehow they've managed to keep it cozy and spacious at the same time. Respect. The service? On point. Friendly without hovering. They've clearly got the timing of everything down pat. The sushi? Totally respectable. I've had better elsewhere, sure--but for this area, it's a win. Fresh, clean, and satisfying. The hibachi, though... that's where it loses me a bit. I'm not pretending to be a hibachi expert. I've never been to Japan. I just know what I like--and here, it's a little underwhelming. Portions are decent but lean smaller than what I've seen at other spots. The yum-yum sauce leans heavy on the mayo and sweet side. And the fried rice? It's fine, but where are the veggies? Where are the bean sprouts? I suspect some of this is Powell-people-induced--like someone complained once about too many vegetables and they just nixed them altogether. (I've seen Chinese restaurants do the same thing. People: let your food have some color, c'mon now.) So yeah, it's not bad by any means. I have never been to this restaurant in person so I cannot comment on the ambiance and service. I've only ordered their food from Uber Eats when I have a coupon. I have tried their filet mignon hibachi several times, crab rangoons and Godzilla sushi roll. Their filet mignon meat is absolutely delicious and they always cook the meat to the right temperature. Their meat preparation and quality is best in the city. However, their hibachi veggies and fried rice just lack flavor. It's below average and just not very good, but also not bad either. If they improved the flavor of these two components I'd rate their filet mignon hibachi meal a 5. The crab rangoons are filled, have a nice flavor and are always cooked well. These are something I would order again. Lastly the Godzilla roll was just okay. Sushi in this city in general is really expensive. Tanuki is cheaper than some places, but for the quality of the fish in the roll and amount of ingredients I just think the roll is way overpriced for what it is. I would not order that again. My hibachi was great too, but by the time I shared the sushi roll, ate the soup and salad, I was pretty full! I ordered the lobster roll, which has lobster tempura in it. Definitely disappointing as you couldn't even taste the sliver of lobster in each bite as it was all tempura. It could have zero lobster in it and it would taste no different as the cream and mango mask of the lack of anything else. Tanuki is great. There are only two Japanese Steakhouses I will eat at on Sawmill Rd...Tanuki and Shi Chi's by Trader Joes being the best. Tanuki is a little less well known so you can usually get seated immediately and you get excellent service and a lot of attention. The thing Tanuki's beats the other JS's on, is quality of meat. Tanuki uses thick, fresh, angus cuts of meat whereas some of the other restaurants give you cheap steak and call it a filet. Not here. The ginger salad dressing is good but could use some work. Also they don't have any bean sprouts and this bothers me. When I go to a Japanese Steakhouse I want some bean sprouts cooked up on the grill with my meal. I love the crunchiness they add. During the week Tanuki has all you can eat sushi rolls for $25. Each roll is about $8/ea and two will get you stuffed...so unless you're a big person or have an unending thirst for sushi rolls, just skip the all you can eat and order a couple rolls. Also, if you leave any uneaten pieces they charge you $1-2 per piece. Plus I really didn't think the rolls were outstanding, definitely not as good as Sushi-Ko's rolls. I'm a big fan of Tanuki. The staff is friendly, the service is quick, and the food is great. The chefs on the hibachi grills are entertaining and personable, and the food is great. It's not just a performative hibachi restaurant though. They have a really good sushi bar, and if you want to eat without the hibachi, they have a sit-down section separate from the grills. So there are three dedicated sections to fit your particular cravings. Lately I've been ordering the sushi dishes and have been very happy with the chef selections. I really like this place. The staff are always nice and attentive and when you happen to get a newbie in training, they are trailed by an established employee to make sure they get it right....and if they don't it is quickly corrected. They have hibachi on one side, which we have not tried yet, and tables on the other for your sushi or what ever pleases you for the evening. As well as the ubiquitous sushi bar where you can watch them slice and dice and roll. The serving sizes are quite adequate with their sashimi pieces often being a very nice size. One of these days we are going to have to try their bento boxes, but sushi has been our meal of choice so far. As with all other sushi places, they have their lunch specials which are less expensive than dinner, but you can often find coupons for dinner in the local flyers or coupons they mail to you. One weird thing....the ladies room had green lighting which was very strange and a bit disorienting; threw me for a slight loop. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for a while, but I keep forgetting it is there. The restaurant is at the northern most tail end in an open strip shopping center at the corner of Sawmill Parkway and Powell Road. It's easy to miss. Walk inside and it has a very contemporary, yet comfortable atmosphere. You enter into the bar and a sit down sushi bar area. The dining room area is split in half between the hibachi dining section or a table seating dining room. We selected the table seating area. Although I have been to other Japanese steak houses in the past, I've never been to a place that has sushi / sashimi on their menu. My experience has been picking up a quick set of California rolls at a local grocer. So, I had a lot of questions. The staff were genuinely friendly and very willing to explain the differences and offer suggestions. They checked back regularly throughout our dining experience. The one annoying feature was ... birthday celebrations. Back in the hibachi seating area there were a couple folks celebrating birthdays. Great that they were having fun. To celebrate, the chef's use some sort of karoke style microphone that plays really loud music. So, if you are in the quieter table seating section, it can be a bit of an assault on your auditory senses. The atmosphere may not lend itself as well if you are looking for a more romantic or quieter dining experience. I ordered the 5 piece, sushi appetizer and the Asian Seafood Mix dinner. With your dinner, you have your choice of a soup or green salad. I selected the green salad, because of the home made ginger dressing. I fumbled with using the chopsticks while eating the sushi appetizer. Each piece was a different raw fish / seafood on top of rice. It's pretty simple in that it is just fresh, raw meant wrapped on top of white sticky rice. Except for the shrimp sushi, they all tasted similar for me. The green salad is mainly a bowl of lettuce topped with their ginger dressing. There were a couple slices of cucumber in the salad. I love the home made ginger dressing. It is the dressing that makes this all worth while. Otherwise, it is a very plain salad. The Asian Seafood Mix was both a delight for the eyes and the taste buds. We both went "Ohhh" over its colorful, yet simple, presentation. The dish contained a lobster tail, scallops, shrimp, crab meat and various vegetables in a light seafood sauce. The dish was outlined with thin orange slices which were refreshing to eat. I coupled the meal with their Asian Pear martini ... these went down REAL easy! This restaurant was a little hard to find, but totally worth the effort. Our Brother & Sister in law found this place but had not tried it yet, so last night we decided to give it a go and we are glad we did. We met them at 6:00pm and the place was about 1/2 full. We ordered drinks and then soon ordered our main courses. My wife and I both had soup, she went with the Mushroom and I had the Miso, we each had a house salad, with ginger dressing and then we split a Buckeye roll, a Green Dragon roll and a spicy Tuna roll. Our Brother & Sister in law ordered the Alaska King Crab roll, the King Lobster roll and a sashimi platter. They also asked for the Avocado salad. When the food arrived, the presentation was spectacular. Our plate held all three of the rolls we ordered, along with a Palm Tree type ornament, which made everything look wonderful. The Avocado salad looked fresh and was put together with care. The sashimi plate had a little light included to it, which made the the whole plate glow. Wow. The attention to detail was fantastic and the service was superior. Not only did all of our food look great, but tasted great as well. Another good part was the bill, which seemed very reasonable for the food we ordered. We were very happy with this whole experience and will be delighted to return here often. We did notice the Hibachi side of the restaurant seemed to be having fun, so maybe next time we will give that a try. read more

Oh my GOD! What HAPPENED Tanuki!? This place that was once a nice place to come for afternoon sushi and maybe evening hibachi has turned into my LEAST favorite sushi place in the town. I was a regular coming in every couple of weeks, but I am sad to say, I will no longer give this place my business. I was so insanely pumped when I saw Groupon had a special going for Tanuki. In my brain I was all like, "Hell yes! SUSHI TIME!" Instead, I had one of the most disappointing sushi experiences of my life. Like seriously, If I had been completely new to sushi and tried it here... I would NEVER have eaten another piece of sushi, or sashimi ever again. We came in on a Saturday afternoon. We knew we couldn't order our usual lunch special since we had the Groupon, so we decided to be adventurous and try some different rolls. ***STRIKE ONE: The waitress says, "No, you can only order entrees with your Groupon." (WHICH BTW, I looked at the stipulations on the Groupon which said NOTHING about having to order entrees. All it said was "Food Items". ***STRIKE TWO: We ordered the spicy roll "entree" and it was F-ING terrible. It was PANKO rolls. YES, PANKO. I just ate like bread sushi. What the hell!? There was NO fish to be found in ANY of the sushi. Nothing spicy about it either. It felt like I had just ingested a lot of crackers. My mouth was INSANELY dry. ***STRIKE THREE: Uhhgh. The server mysteriously switching my drink order half way through from Pepsi to Dr. Pepper. (Not only MY drink, but also my husbands.) It shows the server staff was clearly not paying attention. When I don't work for the day, I go out to lunch with my mom. Last week my mom said that a new hibachi restaurant opened up in Powell, so we tried it out. We liked it so much that we went back for lunch today. When you walk in you are greeted by a little animal statue, but don't let that throw you off. When you open the second door, you are transported from an ordinary strip mall to a trendy Japanese escape. Now I don't usually comment on the decore, but this is worth mentioning. This door opens up into a large greeting area and your eyes are drawn directly to the large stone mural depicting Japanese men on horseback hanging above the trendy sushi bar. The lighting is dim, making the orange back lighting of the sushi bar really jump. When entering you will also notice the music choice. You would expect it to be a low Asian hum in the background, but it was a rather loud compilation pop mix. There are several options for seating, the dining room, sushi bar or at a hibachi table. Of course, we went for the hibachi (but all menus are available where ever you choose to sit). Hibachi lunch includes meat of choice, salad or soup, bean sprouts, and steamed or fried rice. The ginger dressing was wonderful. One of the top dressings at hibachi restaurants around town, but of course, the lettuce is under par consisting of mostly white iceberg. Usually chicken is pretty dry at hibachi, but here it was wonderfully cooked and juicy. We loved the fried rice and that it was included and not extra. And of course I have to mention the sauces. They have two sauces that they give everyone, a ginger sauce and a creamy "yum yum" sauce. Both tasted great on everything. They also have a third creamy white sauce, but I think you have to ask for that one. I couldn't put my finger on what it tasted like, but it was good too. Overall, it was a great experience both times we went. We will most likely only go for lunch because of course the dinner prices are much steeper (but do include veggies and shrimp appetizer). Tanuki is a great addition to the area and hopefully will be there to stay! read more
