Tanuki is great. There are only two Japanese Steakhouses I will eat at on Sawmill Rd...Tanuki and Shi Chi's by Trader Joes being the best. Tanuki is a little less well known so you can usually get seated immediately and you get excellent service and a lot of attention. The thing Tanuki's beats the other JS's on, is quality of meat. Tanuki uses thick, fresh, angus cuts of meat whereas some of the other restaurants give you cheap steak and call it a filet. Not here. The ginger salad dressing is good but could use some work. Also they don't have any bean sprouts and this bothers me. When I go to a Japanese Steakhouse I want some bean sprouts cooked up on the grill with my meal. I love the crunchiness they add. During the week Tanuki has all you can eat sushi rolls for $25. Each roll is about $8/ea and two will get you stuffed...so unless you're a big person or have an unending thirst for sushi rolls, just skip the all you can eat and order a couple rolls. Also, if you leave any uneaten pieces they charge you $1-2 per piece. Plus I really didn't think the rolls were outstanding, definitely not as good as Sushi-Ko's rolls. Went here for sushi only. Service is on point. Prices can be high if you order individual pieces, but you are getting quality. Some of the combo dinners are a good deal. Miso soup is good. Sashimi cuts are thick and generous. Special rolls are also well done. Everything is served with excellent presentation. This will definitely be my go-to sushi spot anytime I'm back in the area. This place is so good!!! We've been eating a lot of sushi lately so we decided to try the hibachi, and I'm so glad we did! The service was really good and super friendly, the hibachi chef was really entertaining and also friendly and the food was amazing. The chef involved the customers, including my husband, by squirting sake into his mouth from 5 feet away and tossing a piece of carrot into the air for him to catch in his mouth; it was a really good time. Kind of like getting dinner and a show! I had the hibachi chicken and my husband had the hibachi shrimp with egg yolk sauce. Both were great! Our entrees also came with soup and salad which weren't only delicious, but made for a great value for the price. It would be fun with a group as well, but also made for a great date night. The only reason I am giving 3 stars instead of 2 is because it used to be better when the doors first opened and I have hope it will get there again. Their hibachi is meh. I've had better and cheaper elsewhere. Their service is very slow. I stopped actually going there for dine-in and we started doing take out sushi. A few of their special rolls are very good - I HIGHLY recommend the Goldbug Roll and the King Lobster Roll - but it's hit or miss depending on who is working the sushi bar that night. We actually just ordered there tonight and whoever made the rolls finally included ALL ingredients - yes, they have left out an item or two like avacado or jalapeno when it was supposed to be included in the roll - but they did such a crappy job rolling the sushi, 5 pieces fell apart completely. If they would just fix their service and make sure the chefs are paying attention to the food orders and prep, I think they would get a higher rating. read more

I just went here recently, and it was okay. Only had the hibachi, so I can only comment on that. Service was friendly enough. The chef was very entertaining. The food though was pretty meh. It needs more flavor. Plus, the reviews are right, the portions are very small while the prices are comparable or even higher to other hibachi restaurants. Usually I have a problem with going to some sushi bars but this one by far happens to be one of my favorites on this side of town. First and foremost, I really enjoyed the atmosphere and it's not too big or busy. Second of all, it's very clean, neat and they are very professional and third, the food is very fresh especially the seafood which tastes like it's coming straight from the harbor or ocean. I absolutely enjoy the atmosphere, the people that work there, the food and drinks. I visit this area quite often because I'm a sushi and hibachi grill love her so that's why keep going back and back every single time. This restaurant has a fun, hip atmosphere! Lots of fun lights, definitely different than most restaurants in Powell. Staff was very friendly and attentive clearing used plates, refilling drinks etc. The food came fast, although we did have a late dinner. My boyfriend DID love this place, not so much anymore. I'll be honest, I have never been a fan of the food as I have been to MANY Japanese Steakhouse's, and Tanuki does not give you nearly as much food as the others, the vegetable's used are different than the other steakhouse's which I wasn't sure if I liked (such as broccoli and carrots), and they put teriyaki on everything, which isn't bad I guess, but it's not expected, I prefer without. I do like that they shoot Saki into your mouth (which my boyfriend loved!). Anyway, I took my boyfriend here for his birthday 10/6/13 as it was his favorite restaurant. It was homecoming night in Powell, so I understand there was a lot of people there and they were busy, we didn't call ahead, but were more than happy to wait. When we walked in the girl looked at us like she had seen a ghost! We asked to seat in hibachi and she flat out said no, but you can sit in the other room... we said no.. we want hibachi. She looked in the room and looked back at us and said "No availability." We asked if we could wait, which we should not have needed to ask... it's really strange they didn't ask us (it's like they wanted us to leave). She said yes you can wait, and we said "ok, we will be at the bar." We sat at the bar for 25 minutes waiting, nothing happened... no one spoke one word to us, no one asked us if we wanted anything at all... we were at the bar and would have been more than happy to wait with drinks if anyone would have offered, not one person even went behind the bar. The men cutting the sushi didn't even make eye contact. We left and went to Shi Chi farther south on Sawmill right by Trader Joe's by 161 which we had never been to before and were blown away, it was amazing. Thankfully my boyfriend ended up having a good birthday. We will never be going back to Tanuki again. read more

Cutomers are not dogs or pigs!!! The owner and his team are great (1star), but I don't like the chef throw paid rice or paid cooked scrambled eggs at the customer's mouth like feeding dogs. You may step on the rice or scrambled eggs accidentally until you find out under your shoes. It is desrespectable act among Asia culture to threw rice away like feeding dogs or pigs. We've now had take out from Tanuki as many times as we've dined in. They are the rockstars of takeout! Sushi and hibachi items in the same order? No problem, and perfectly packaged. The sushi is beautifully prepared, and the hibachi is plentiful and hot. It's very easy to order online and we have never experienced one mistake. Stopped in here before an event to experience the Hibachi grill for the first time to be told they had zero seats available. We were offered a seat in the regular dining room due to previous reservations. I reserve the right to edit this upon another visit. While enjoying dinner, my daughter (the real reason we were here) and I we saw the fire plumes through the smoked glass that blocked our view from the dining area, felt the heat of said plumes and heard the oohs, ahhs and screams of what can only be termed joy and fright on the other side. *le sigh* The food was good, not great. I ate the mushroom soup, a salad with some sort of cream sauce, the vegetable hibachi and a few of my daughter's shrimp from her hibachi plate. My margarita was tasty and probably the highlight of my trip. I hope to get the full experience next time. read more

Suggestion -- always ask whether a Japanese restaurant's owner Japanese, if not, walk away. For this restaurant, I don't even need to ask; because everything here indicates this is NOT authentic Japanese place. Live in the Great Columbus for 15 years, eat out one or two times per week for more than a decade. Most of restaurants we visited are in mid to up-scales. This is the worst "Japanese" restaurant in Columbus I've visited so far. Service was not great. They even don't have hot towels for guests. First of all, my husband and I love calamari, so we always order calamari as appetizer if it's on the menu. This place charge the same price as other places ($7.49), but the number of fried squid they serve is only about 1/3 or 1/4 of other places given. I'm not kidding, it is THE SMALLEST calamari dish we've ever seen! The the Curry Chicken, one of my favorite dishes in authentic Japanese restaurants, is totally screwed up -- They cooked this dish nothing at all like Japanese do. It should be fried battered chicken, then add curry on top But Tanuki mixed chicken and vegetables together and cooked. It's more like Chinese dish. Terrible, terrible, terrible! My husband ordered Sushi. Not fresh at all. It's very critical to use fresh fish to make sushi or sashimi for health concerns. But this place don't do a right way. To sum it up, don't waste your money here if you need real Japanese restaurant. This place charged Japanese restaurant price but only do things like much cheaper Chinese food. This place is really good. The staff are very friendly and always remember our usual drinks/etc. The happy hour half price rolls are a great bargain. The hamachi (yellowtail) and shitake are both very good, among others. Nigiri is also good. I am not a hibachi fan so I cannot comment on that aspect. The food is pretty good. Our server was lovely and very prompt. The shrimp is big and the veggies are fresh. They don't serve sprouts with the meal - which was disappointing to me because I love sprouts! I wasn't a huge fan of their sauces. One is a white sauce that looks like ranch dressing but tastes sweet. The salads were also DRENCHED in dressing. Portions are significantly smaller than other hibachi restaurants in the area. (I should have listened to other reviewers before coming here). Unless you have a groupon, which we did, it's not worth the money. Had a great time there! They made our visit enjoyable, definitely a family place. They let us bring our own cake because we were there to celebrate several birthdays and they helped cut it and served the cake we brought. Also they adorned us with their fun custom heads & played a fun song to the birthday people. I would say they could work more on smiling and be more sociable but the effect was there enough. The hibachi experience was also fun with flame and serving us liquid/alcohol/sake with a bottle squirted to who wanted to take part even had a baby bottle with water for the kids to take in on the experience. I will say I will definitely come back also I had sushi there before and it was yummy. Try it out, you guys won't be disappointed, one of my best funniest experiences and my friend also told me they tried other hibachi places & this one tastes the best. Slightly overpriced, but still good. Sushi is fresh and the restaurant itself is clean: you never want to eat raw fish in a place with dirty toilets. Consider that a tip from me to you. The hibachi grill experience is a fun one. My older son was cracking up throughout the entire "performance",and it really is a performance when you think about it. I used to enjoy this place until my last 2 visits. Our Hibachi chef was fair at best (quickly cooked, no entertainment for my family). I spoke to the manager the second time and she later admitted they were busy and did not have time. I thought this is the experience you pay for at a Japanese steakhouse.
