We went on a weeknight and it turns out reservations are required no matter the day but the waitress was able to squeeze us in at the counter. Service was friendly from wait staff and the chef. We got lots of water refills and the food came out very quickly. Sushi was delicious and I'd recommend Tanuki to anyone on the windward side wanting a quieter, local place to eat. Despite reservations required it is very casual. Would not recommend for kids though as the place was small.

A little hole in the wall place for sushi in Kaneohe. I go to a lot of different sushi, restaurants and most of the good ones are someplace on the other side of the mountain in town. This little place is a gem. They are the only sushi restaurant that I've been to here on the island (and I've been to a lot of them) that has a selection of fish that isn't typically found in other restaurants. There is always something new available to try every time I come here. They buy a lot of seasonal fish, which is why I think they always have something new. The place is clean. The service is friendly and efficient. The food is amazing!

Finally made it back to this lil gem in kaneohe! Still serving great quality sushi from Japan. There were some great items on the specials list that I never knew existed. Wife did a bunch of ala carte items and I did the omakase. The quality you get is top notch with a very reasonable tag! If you're unsure of what to get, just talk story with any of the employees. They will give you tailored recommendations based on the type of sushi you typically enjoy. Great food, great service, great price! Pro Tip: Call to make a reservation as this is a cozy spot with delicious food!

Always never disappoints!! Reservations made for dinner and ordered a platter with the following this time - Yukimasu (snow trout), Medai (sea bream), Kinmeidai, Shimaaji and king salmon! And we added the spicy tuna and eel roll. Omg , I went to sushi heaven & will be back again soon!!

I have to give a short shout-out to one of my favorite sushi spots, Tanuki Sushi. This was my first Thanksgiving home in five years (instead of in Vegas), I contacted my family to get together. Since we're all not big turkey fans, we decided to have an alternative menu. I've ordered sashimi platters from them before, and since it was less than a week til Thanksgiving, I contacted Tanuki to see if they could accommodate me. Mark and Shawn know what kind of fish I like, so I just asked them to put together a sashimi platter and gave them my budget. Since they were closed on Thanksgiving day, we made arrangements for pickup on Wednesday night. The platter was ready on time, and I wrapped it in plastic wrap and put it in the fridge. It was still fresh and perfect the next night for all of us to enjoy. Great selections that included Ootoro, Inada (baby Hamachi), and Uni, along with at least half a dozen other raw and seared items. There was more than enough to go around for the 8 of us, along with the other pot luck items (ham, mashed potatoes, rice, salad, and dessert) we had for dinner. A great Thanksgiving dinner, and we'll probably do the same thing for Christmas.

Tanuki is a nice hidden gem in Kaneohe. I am reluctant to give a review as it's charm and ambience come from It's location and size. Tanuki is a true and genuine local sushi spot that holds true to fresh fish from Japan. It's unique selection of fresh and rare fish from Japan make this experience unlike any other on Oahu. omakase is the best option as it gives the opportunity to try the freshest fish that the chef has selected. A definite must try if you are craving authentic Japan style sushi. Staff are friendly and very personable making your experience a very comfortable and enjoyable experience. Five star experience with a very homey feel.

Definitely a hidden gem!! Food was absolutely delicious. My favorite was the hamachi carpaccio. Service was excellent and fast. The ambiance is relaxing and quiet. It was a perfect stop after walking at the botanical gardens.

A curious place, it's hidden in plain sight! There is no kitchen so the complexity of the menu is not what you might find in town but I had no complaints. The Omakase diners $100 but the fish was not only very fresh but there were a few things I have never seen. I think a reservation is a must as there are not more than 15 places to sit.

A great sushi option in Kaneohe. My bf and I dined here on a Friday night ~6pm by with no reservation and it was private dining the whole time we were there haha. It was nice that nobody else was there but a little quiet! The restaurant is cozy + small and clean--they still require face masks (as of January 2024) even if there were no other diners. My favorites of the evening were the hot tea LOL and the spicy dragon roll. Tanuki sushi only offers...well sushi! So I wouldn't recommend this place if you're hoping for other Japanese dishes. I think the only other non-sushi dish was miso soup. Overall, quality of fish was good and I would come back just for the spicy dragon roll :) Park in the lot in the front and bring your sushi appetite!

Great new restaurant in Kaneohe. If you enjoy eating good sushi and sashimi then you will enjoy this restaurant. The owners make you feel welcomed and service was excellent. The only concern would be if you have a group greater than 4. Best to call ahead since they can easily be at maximum capacity. They allow you to BYOB. Limited free parking. Glad to support a locally owned and operated business. read more

Fantastic food and service. The maguro and hamachi were ono! Recommend the rainbow salad. The dyno maguro roll was very tasty. The place is very small so suggest making a reservation to avoid a wait. Fresh fresh fresh!! It's new, there's only 2 guys working here so come hungry but also patient, and be prepared to eat some great fresh sushi in Kaneohe. I'm officially hooked. The spicy ahi was fantastic, and I could add shiso to it which made my belly oh so happy! We also tried a few of the rolls and those were great. The king salmon was also so buttery and delicious. This place will do great, I can't wait to return soon! read more

Best sushi spot in Kaneohe if you like fresh fish from Japan. It's a level above other sushi places in the area because it has more than the typical ahi, hamachi and salmon. The staff are so friendly which adds to the experience. Plating is minimalistic so don't expect fancied up sushi. read more

I'm no sushi expert but this place is crazy good. Super fresh fish, wonderful and friendly service, and very clean eating area. They have a special way of making you feel like you're a regular. They are not fast but this is only because they take their time preparing ever order. I recommend ordering one or two things at a time so you can enjoy your dinner over a glass of wine (byob with a super cheap glass fee). I also recommend making reservations prior-it's pretty hard to show up and get a table. Worth every penny! read more

I love this place. The sushi is amazing and the staff is friendly. The fish is always delicious and so well priced. I usually get something different each time we go although at this point I think I've had it all. Each time I leave with a sushi induced perma-grin. It's a small shop and tucked out of the way but I'm so happy we found this place a year ago. A-ma-zing. It's become our go to for sushi. Also, byob for you drinkers out there. read more

This place is amazing!!! Their sushi is sooo fresh and their plates are full of color. We tried the dragon roll and it was hard not to eat it within 2 seconds just because it tasted so good. They have a rotating availability of very unique fish, they recommended following their Instagram to know which fish they currently have. Highly recommended!! read more

Just ate there for lunch. Small place. Clean and nice. Sushi was great. Very fresh. Good rice. Little expensive for the size, but not unlike any other quality sushi place. Staff was great. Friendly. I had the spicy tuna. One of the best I've had in a long time. Sushi is so expensive these day, so can't eat it all the time. Cheap sushi is, well, cheap. This place has top waikiki sushi bar like taste. I hope they become successful enough to move to a bigger place, with more parking. read more

The food and quality of fish here is fantastic, that cannot be disputed. The hostess however was so unfriendly from the moment my husband and I walked in. She asked if we had a reservation, we didn't, and one of the chef's told her to take us anyway. The place has 3 tables and seating at a sushi bar. When we arrived there were only 2 people there. She never greeted us, never tried to engage in conversation (even though the chefs were so friendly to the couple they were serving). She seated us, gave us water and never asked if we wanted anything additional to drink. She took our order, never smiled, nothing. It was just so uncomfortable, that we ordered, ate quickly, left and decided to go elsewhere. I don't know if she was having an off night or what, but based on the lack of hospitality/friendliness we won't be going back. read more

Awesome spot for you sushi connoisseurs. Order off the specials on the wall and you wont be disappointed. I tried a few new kinds of fish and fell in love with Kawahagi & Kinmidai. Be aware that this place is BYOB and come prepared. It's a small place but they do a good job of social distancing & sanitizing. read more

All the right details, and conveniently located in Kāne'ohe for Windward residents. FRESH, fresh, fresh Maguro, Tako, Ika, Sake. Don't forget to look up on the wall for premium selections. Last night was my first try at this place, and I will definitely be a repeat customer. Make sure to plan ahead, it's recommended that you make a reservation as seating is limited. I love their food but gave it 3 due to terrible customer service. Just tried to make a reservation and was met by a completely rude female on the other end. Seriously? During these times when businesses are closing? All the places I've been to have been appreciative of having customers. Note to person taking reservations: DO NOT make the customer feel like their stupid just because your "3 person reservation" equates to what you define as a "large party." My 'ohana and friends frequent this place but one needs to be aware that this type of customer service will put you out of business. read more

The restaurant itself is spacious with about 12 tables available for dining in. They also offer a good selection of bottled drinks and fountain drinks. The menu has a nice variety of sushi, udon, donburi, and salads, so there's something for everyone. One thing we appreciate about this location is that it's always kept very clean. Our server greeted us promptly, shared the specials and served us well our whole visit. We were both in the mood to "try all of the things". We started with the arincini, Brussel sprouts and bruschetta. The arincini was filled with pesto and feta perfectly fried and delightful, the bruschetta was so fresh with slices of roasted garlic and sundried tomatoes but the star was the lightly fried brussel sprouts served on a plate of balsamic reduction and I believe garlic aioli topped with Mac nuts and shaved cheese. We share the kubocha ravioli and pear and Gorgonzola salad. The fresh pasta was so light! The salad was fresh, bountiful and filled with toppings. There were at least half a dozen things on the menu we are planning to go back and taste. If you're in the Kaneohe area, give them a try!
