Steve said that "tanuki" in Japanese means "badger". We did see some ceramic figurines of maneki neko (lucky cats), daruma, and tanuki. The logo of this restaurant is a badger's face in a cartoon style. Cute! LOCATION: There's free parking in the front of the building which is near to King Windward Nissan. This space next to Megumi restaurant used to be a bakery. The tattoo shop on the end used to be a sub sandwich shop. INTERIOR: This Sushi bar only has 6 seats at the counter and four movable (rearrangeable) tables with 2 chairs each. This newly renovated place is clean, bright, and contemporary! Pass through the dragon curtain to get to the convenient restroom! SERVICE: Mike was our server. He was very friendly, patient, humorous, and efficient. Thanks for making our first visit a pleasant one! FOOD: Steve had the Sashimi Salad and chose the salmon and ebi as his two toppings. I had the Rainbow Salad which had an assortment of seafood - salmon, hamachi, maguro, and ebi. Finally, a sushi bar in Kaneohe. Great fresh fish, simply made and very good food. The menu is small but they have something for every palette. Everything is made by just two guys so be patient. I took my Dad there for his 90th birthday. He loved it. He said, " That was the best Hamachi Kama I have ever eaten!" My tip would be, go early. They open at 5pm for dinner. Such a clean and nice little restaurant. We are the only one table in the restaurant at lunchtime. They lock the door to prevent other people from coming, which feels very safe. The first time my husband and I went, we were told we needed a reservation. But take out was ok. But the young woman saw the hunger in our eyes and took us in like stray cats. She said we had to order by a certain time, and we agreed. We ordered almost everything. I like to try a little bit of everything- but really, nothing ever goes to waste. Everything was wonderful. How many times do you think I've driven by Tanuki not even thinking that there was this sushi gem in Kaneohe?!?! Waaaay too many times. But in true Yelp fashion, I looked up a place to grab lunch with a friend the other day and literally said to myself, "Um....4.5-star sushi in Kaneohe?! Should we?!?" It's literally in the Ko'o Lau Building which I've made a zillion comments about to my husband about that terrible spelling on the mint-colored building. There's about 5 or 6 parking stalls that's shared by a few other businesses. So, yeah...No luck on parking for us. We decided to park in the residential area a block away which was up the hill. It really was no prob to park there and walk (downhill!) to the restaurant. There's a few tables and a seats at the sushi bar. We had to sit at the sushi bar - no big deal just less space than a table. Ordered the Rainbow roll, unagi 8 piece maki, & the spicy tuna 8 piece maki to share with my lunch pal. My 3-year old had limited options since it's really only sushi (nothing really fried or cooked)...so we got him a miso soup & a side of rice. He was stoked!! Needless to say, Tanuki serves up legit, melt-in-your-mouth sushi goodness. Every single piece was a party in my mouth and I did my very best to control the fact that I wanted to eat everything on the gosh darn menu. Thank you to the Yelpers for leading us to this gem. I've been living on the Windward side for a little over a year and only now am I discovering their existence. Better late than never. I love that Chef Sean brings in a variety of unique, seasonal fish and he posts the fresh fish on Instagram. Fresh fish is brought in at least once, sometimes twice a week. He doesn't bring in large quantities of an item, just so that freshness is not compromised. If you want him bringing something special in, like ankimo (monkfish liver), you just need to ask. I've gone twice in the past few weeks and was highly impressed. Some fish I've tried: Kinmedai (Golden Eye Snapper) -This fish is normally served with torched skin and melts in your mouth. Shime Saba (Marinated Mackerel) - I love this with shiso. It's a fatty, oily fish with delicious flavor. Hokkaido Uni (Sea Urchin) - Wow. Just wow. Sweet and creamy. This was heaven. Isaki (Threeline Grunt) - Delicate, mellow tasting white fish. It was bomb served with ponzu. Kihata (Yellow Grouper) - Not pictured. Similar texture to Hirame & Engawa. A white fish with some chewiness, sweet and tasty. I loved this one!) Wild Kanpachi (Amber Jack) - Clean tasting with a firmer texture. Aji (Horse Mackerel) - Delicious silver skinned fish wonderful with grated ginger and negi. Nodoguro also known as Akamutsu (Blackthroat Seaperch/Rosy Sea Bass) - Slightly torched brings out the fatty oils in this fish. If you like Kinmedai, you'll love this fish. Nodoguro Eggs and Liver on Nori - Almost no words can describe this. The flavor of the eggs + creaminess of the liver + umami taste of the nori = HEAVENLY! Make reservations as this is a small sushi bar. Definitely worth the drive to the Windward side. read more

Best kept secret in Kaneohe! We only heard of this restaurant through a friend. We went to have something different for lunch today (8/20) and selected this place. Upon entering you'll find a brightly lit restaurant, tables to the right and seating fronting the sushi chef. Greeting with a smile and sat immediately. Our fun spirited water took our order and the sushi chef began the prep of our dish. The sushi was spot on and very fresh. The dish was presented for an Emperor and Empress. So beautiful! I felt we were alone in a dessert with the sushi chef and a few if his staff. They greeted us when we walked in and the young server who served us was okay. The young server did not bring it. Upon entering the restaurant was busy and most of the tables were filled. The place we reserved was at the bar, and that was fine. There were 3 people working. It was rush hour so it took some time for the staff to take our order. We ordered sashimi, salmon, hamachi, and Otoro, along with some appetizers like Edaname and salad. The appetizers were decent, but the sashimi and sushi were amazing! The salmon had the right texture, temperature, and taste. It melted right in your mouth. The Otoro had a high price and was definitely worth it as it had a slightly better taste than the salmon. The quality of the fish was great and brought out the taste well. I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a good hole in the wall sushi bar and don't mind waiting a little bit during rush hour. read more

I'm so glad that they're open again. Tanuki has been a family go to since their opening. On my very first visit (before Covid-19) it was lunch with one of my kids. Eating out at new restaurants with my young kids always gives me a bit of anxiety. "Will they have something they'll eat", "will they be ok with some special request", "do I have stuff for my kids to do if service takes a while"...and the list goes on and on. After lunch here, I was willing to give Tanuki Sushi all the stars and more! I ordered the sashimi/sushi lunch special and miso soup. Before Mark punched the order in, he asked my daughter if she wanted rice in her miso soup. That little bit of attention just put Tanuki Sushi on my "Places I can take my kids to" list and I didn't even eat anything yet. First off Yes and Yes! I absolutely love this place! Small intimate setting with some of the freshest fish in the area. I got the deluxe bento with spicy tuna and an unagi avocado roll. Would of liked more unagi but the roll was pretty good, loved the avocado flavor. All the items in my bento were cut so perfectly, I love eating my sushi with soy sauce/wasabi but the fish was so flavorful on its own. Prices are near market price so it's definitely a splurge to come here. But if you want quality you have to pay the price! read more

Tanuki Sushi is located in a building that fronts Kamehameha Highway. The driveway to the parking lot is accessed by heading away from Kaneohe on Kamehameha Highway (right after Discount Windows and before Yamashiro Building Supplies). The parking lot may be able to handle 15 cars on a good day, which presents a problem with four merchants and their customers occupying the same building. Parking is especially limited during lunch time; availability is more abundant during the evening when Tanuki Sushi is the only business open. The restaurant is not wheelchair accessible. The doorway to the restaurant is 3 inches above the sidewalk that fronts the building. There is a single accessible parking stall with an access aisle that leads to a curb ramp up onto the sidewalk. The management of the restaurant will assist patrons in wheelchairs to traverse the 3 inch doorway rise. The restaurant appears unimpressive outside, yet it is clean, cool, and inviting on the inside. Reservations are highly recommended due to the small seating capacity; approximately 20 customers may be seated simultaneously. There is also an inverse correlation between the amount of customers seated at the same time and the speed to which the meals are served. There is one primary chef and one on-demand backup assistant creating all the dishes. This is a sushi and sashimi restaurant. If you want other Japanese dishes (i.e., chicken teriyaki, shrimp tempura, udon, etc.), you won't find it at this restaurant. Once you understand the logistical limitations of this new small business, you will relish and enjoy the texture and flavor of the foods produced. Their rice is a quality short grain variety from Japan, blended with the right balance of vinegar and sugar. Their fish is freshly sourced and prepared to perfection. My mother likes the Dragon roll. My wife likes the Rainbow roll. I usually order a custom sashimi plate; the assorted sashimi plate with additional Uni or Toro, depending on the availability. Mark is the consummate front man, cordially welcoming customers and joking with them along the way. One time I asked him why he didn't greet his customers with the traditional "Irasshaimase" when they entered the shop. His response was, "Have you ever heard me speak Japanese? Customers would start running away." Sean is the intricate sushi chef whose superb knife skills can be seen in the finished products brought to your table, both beautiful and delicious. He is quiet most of the time but if you mention mixing coffee with vanilla ice cream, he will quickly join the conversation. There is a quaint new quality sushi restaurant and it matches well with the relatively quiet suburb of Kaneohe. Reservations are a MUST due to their small seating area - we've never had trouble calling ~2 hours in advance. Like many places on this side, they are BYOB. All of the family really enjoys quality sushi, as a few of my family members have been to Japan partially for this reason. Upon arrival, the restaurant just opened, so it was empty. First impressions were that it was clean and minimal. It's a cute little place with bar and table seating. I personally would not recommend this place for larger groups (5+) because of the limited space. It has a much more intimate setting, perfect for couples.
