We got two lava egg dishes: one with chicken, the other with grilled pork. The chicken one is really great, very flavorful with Thai signature herbs. The sauce came with it was also excellent. The grilled pork was so so: definitely have better ones in other places. Hot Thai tea was amazing while match strawberry was tasteless. The coconut cakes are must have: very fresh, crisp in the bottom and gooey in the middle. The line was super long when we went. We waited for close to 45 mins Don't feel like it worth the wait! When I think about Thai food for breakfast, my first thought is the Wat Mongkolratanaram (aka Thai Temple) in Berkeley, but now Tanzie's adds another option. However, unlike Thai Temple, the food here feels much more American in the presentation but the flavours is anything but. The menu here is very simple, but the presentation is amazingly elegant. I came here with a couple of friends and we ordered the Market Salad, Nam Prika Kha, Nam Prik Ong, and Sai Oua and none of the food disappointed. The market salad was sweet and salty, and there was a lot of flavor and spice in all of the lava egg dishes we ordered. The portion size I thought was just right and we even had a little bit of leftover afterwards too. I will say that you should not come here expecting flavours similar to other Thai restaurants that serve Pad Thai, fried rice, curries, and the like. The flavours here are much stronger and more pungent than other Thai restaurants. The people here are friendly and warm and you can tell that they wanted to really share the flavours of Northern Thailand with customers. I'm genuinely so confused how this place has so many 5 star reviews. Like many others I saw a video about Tanzie's online and geez people are just raving about it... Here's the good, the bad, and the ugly. The Good- The eggs were surprisingly good, wait time is naught on a Monday afternoon. The waitresses were nice. The Bad- The green Thai chia bowl was 18 dollars for a scoop of green colored chia seeds and some sliced fruits... The servings are rather small for the steep prices. We left hungry after a $75 bill. The Ugly- We ordered the Thai beignets and were disappointed to find two hairs fried into the dough. The drinks were terrible as well, we ordered the Thai tea, which--I've had better at Vietnamese restaurants...-- as well as an espresso drink. As a barista myself the espresso was not good, it tasted strongly bitter. Overall, I will not be coming back and I also would dissuade anyone from spending their money here. read more

Upon being seated, I was eager to explore the menu, and our server enthusiastically shared details about the dishes. We placed our drink order while reviewing our options. However, as time passed, I began noticing issues around me. Tables weren't being cleared promptly, creating delays in seating and service. While the menu explanations were thorough, they seemed to take precedence over actual service, causing unnecessary lags in order-taking. We waited so long that the host who seated us ultimately stepped in to take our order. They were incredibly gracious, but our main server appeared blithely unaware of the delay or the overall breakdown of our experience. Drinks were another issue. While other tables that arrived after us were served, ours had yet to come out. We had to flag down the person making espresso drinks, and while they quickly expedited our order, the drinks were incorrectly prepared. Mistakes happen, but our server neither acknowledged the error nor made any effort to rectify it. Again, it was the host--who was already juggling seating, waitlist management, and table follow-ups--who provided updates on our food. Throughout the wait, we received no proactive check-ins, which was especially frustrating since we hadn't even ordered small plates. As for the food, it was solid but lacked the meticulous attention to detail that could elevate the experience. My pork belly (Gaeng Hung Le) skillet had inconsistencies--some pieces were all fat, while others had a well-balanced ratio of rendered fat and meat. The dish was rich but could have used a touch more restraint to feel cohesive. My partner's Nam Prik Ong Skillet seemed enjoyable, particularly the sausage, though when I ordered a side of it, I found it overcooked and overly charred in some areas. Overall, the food was good, but the service was severely lacking. If the food had been exceptional, I might have been willing to overlook the service issues, but that wasn't the case. To our main server: less time should be spent making distasteful jokes about a guest's food assessment and more time ensuring quality service. Tanzie's offers a unique perspective on Thai food by offering food styles from northern Thailand (as opposed to 99% of other Thai restaurants out there). This means savory, delicious spicy egg breakfasts and really interesting takes on traditional breakfast specials like omelettes. The food is beautifully presented and the service is attentive and caring. I've taken my parents here and they adored it. Pro tip - you must get there for breakfast before 930 am, preferably 9 am as the restaurant is tiny and fills up fast. Went here for a brunch with my best friend this past weekend. Although the wait time was very long the amazing food makes up for it. We ordered the coconut cakes which included; coconut, sweet potatoes, purple yam, corn, and green onion. My favorite one would have to be the purple yam. The eggs were so soft and gooey it felt like I was biting into a pillow. They were perfectly cooked and the rice went so well with it. The beef was also delicious and had great flavor but was a little tough. I didn't really love the sausage but I think it is just because it is a flavor that I wasn't accustomed to. The chia seed pudding was also very good but at the end of the day I didn't feel like it was special so I wouldn't order it again. One of Berkeley's hidden gems for brunch. Popped in on a Saturday around noon and found a crowd hovering outside. The wait system was a bit chaotic for me as a first timer. One server was taking names by memory of who got there first, then put them into the system's waitlist, which was impressive but risky. You really can't trust hangry people with the honor system We waited about 30 minutes and finally got a table. We started with the coconut cakes along with the ube drink and hot soymilk. The coconut cakes were incredibly delicious. Every bite was a flavor bomb. Definitely best enjoyed hot out of the kitchen. For mains, we had the grilled pork bowl and the beef shank lava plates. Both were fantastic but the pork jowl was the star. Savory, tender, and perfect with the lava eggs. The beef shank leaned heavier on the lemongrass, still delicious, just not as balanced as the pork. Once you're seated, the food and service are amazing. Definitely worth the wait, just bring your patience for the line outside. Tanzie is one of my go-to Thai brunch spots in Berkeley. I seriously love coming here. The lava eggs are a must. So fluffy, rich, and packed with flavor. The chicken sai oua is really good, but my absolute favorite is the nam prik ong. It's spicy but not overwhelming and pairs perfectly with the rice and eggs. Their Thai beignets are also delicious, though definitely on the sweeter side, so we skipped them this time. Highly recommend this place. The place is extremely small inside, but they try to serve as many people as possible with all their tables very closed together. The Thai Beignets were light and fluffy. Super airy and crispy! I asked what made the beignets thai, and our server said the addition of condensed milk as a dip. I also got the Sai Oua with Chicken, and I enjoyed my dish! The chicken was shaped in little patties and it was flavorful with lemongrass hints. My eggs were strong with the heavy cream though, but my friends said their eggs were light. Trying a bit of my friends, the pork jowl was nice and crispy. It had a good chew and char to it. The beef shank was also really tender and a little spicy! And the pork belly was very melty. The restaurant was completely full because the place is quite small; we waited about 45 minutes until we could get seated. as a brunch lover, tanzie's thai brunch met my cravings! the restaurant is fairly small with some residential street parking around it, so be prepared to wait as the service is a bit slow. the inside of the restaurant feels super homey, and the menu is pretty limited. gaeng hung le - this was the star of the meal!! i will say that it is so flavorful that you might get sick of it after a couple bites, so definitely share if you are planning on getting this dish. regardless, the rice reminds me of a sticky rice with fatty, juicy pork nam prik ong - the sausage is a little bit like indonesian satay, and i love how they cook the rice so it is super flavorful. sai oua - we got this with pork, and it was the same kind of meat as the nam prik ong dish. the egg is super buttery and soft, but i would definitely go with the skillet dish over this if you have to pick. jiu nung nam prik ha - the meat was tasty, but the sauce was just not it. i knew it'd be heavy on the ginger but even my parents who can handle/enjoy ginger found it to have a weird aftertaste. thai beignet - this is exactly like chinese donut, except so much chewier, kind of like mochi! it pairs well with the condensed milk and is a good appetizer. despite the long wait, i think it's absolutely worth it to check out tanzie's! read more

This is a cute spot with leaf seat cushions and beautiful food that actually tastes as good as it looks. Tanzie served my group; I appreciate the double-check on allergens. For future reference: of the savory dishes, only the vegan egg has no nuts or shellfish. We ordered the nam prik kha lava egg, vegan lava egg, pork jowl, and gaeng hung le; I can't speak to the quality of the latter two, but I know that the peanuts in the gaeng hung le kept some of their original texture and that it was incredibly filling. The vegan eggs and butter are indistinguishable from the real thing and are really eggy eggs. The mushrooms there have good texture, and the vegan fish sauce is reminiscent of salsa and strong on the alliums in a good way. The nam prik kha comprises beef shank and a sauce of galangal, chilis, and garlic. The shank is even. I want to say the sauce also has lemongrass; the smell, as is the taste, is punchy, galangal-forward, beautiful. The sauce is fresh and balances the meat even without a vegetable serving on the plate. The spice level is appropriate, if a bit under. I'd come back to try the seasonal Dungeness crab egg (available now), the nam prik ong, and the stunning chia bowl. read more
