My best friend and I have gone to Taproot Café and lounge at least a couple of times now and we are always happy to be there when we visit, and leave full and satisfied! The menu is packed with fresh, vegetable forward, vegetarian and vegan options. The cocktails are delicious, and the atmosphere is lively both inside, and outside in nicer weather. The one thing preventing a 5 star review is that the service is just okay. Nothing outstandingly bad, just not great. One of the times we went, we waited a very long time in between check-in's from our server, going without refills on our water and waiting a very long time to order another round of cocktails. Nothing that's a major dealbreaker, but it does stand out. We will still be back though because the food is delicious and it hits a very particular spot when you want to eat delicious, flavorful yet healthy hearty food. read more

If you are vegan or vegetarian please note there is NOT a dedicated fryer for the vegan/veg food. Our server informed us of this when we were there for Mother's Day and I was very grateful. Sadly, like many places that have vegan options, you cannot trust the hot foods are not cooked on the same grills or fried in the same fryers with everything else. Taproot is one of my favorite lunch spots in downtown Salem. If possible, ask to sit on the sofas in the back to get away from the noise and for a more comfortable experience. Excellent eatery that caters to the health-conscious but leaves plenty of options if you're wanting to go the other way (hello, chocolate layer cake!) Along with a commendable choice of brunchy food choices, there are various juices, shrubs (!), coffees and teas (fire chai!). Everything is fresh and minimally processed, and they have a knack for blending comfort foods with gourmet flavor combinations that make it clear why this place draws people in like a local hotspot. I visited recently and tried the veggie burger with a side of sweet potato fries along with a side of the flash-fried brussels (with blue cheese and balsamic glaze, which I believe is a mortal sin to omit). Both dishes were extremely fresh and flavorful. I'm not all that into fries, but I loved how light and crispy these fries were. I went to the bathroom at one point, and someone accidentally cleared my table. The staff graciously made me another order to go and wouldn't accept my offer to pay for the 2nd meal. Pretty underwhelmed by brunch here. Ordered a hash and the daily special (very fun color flower curds.) While the curds were delicious, it took about 50 min to get. Then the hash came a full hour later which surprised me seeing how... It was pretty simple to prepare. My friend and I had finished our coffee for a good amount of time before any food arrived that when it came we scarfed it down in about 15 min. While I was impressed with the flavor and innovation of the cauliflower special, I can't say the same about the hash (especially given prep time). The environment here is nice, but it wouldn't be my first choice for brunch if I were at all hungry. read more

My friend recommended we come to Taproot and give it a try. After looking at the menu online and his persistence on it being a good place to have lunch, I agreed to go! When we went it was a bit busy, with both inside and outside seating. The interior is nicely decorated and had a nice open atmosphere. My son has a difficult time finishing big portions, so we decided to split the Big Jake's biscuits and gravy. The staff was nice enough to split it and bring us two dishes. The food was awesome and the biscuits and gravy were very good and the accompanying items as well that come on the dish. This is a great spot for people wanting both a healthy option as well as a stick to your bones option with their food choices and that is pleasant to see. After a week of camping, a nice meal out was called for and this fit the bill. Excellent for vegetarians and good for carnivores too. Had the spicy bowl with fresh and pickled veggies and it lived up to it's reputation! My only complaint is that the kale was not de-stemmed. Every time I've been to the Taproot whether it be for breakfast or for drinks in the evening, it has always always been a pleasant experience. Taproot is my go-to when I am in the downtown area. This most recent time was the first time I've enjoyed their breakfast menu. I am a huge lover of Eggs Benedict, I order it pretty much every time I see it on a menu, so naturally I did. It tasted as amazing as it looked. The Hollandaise was as tasty as you'd hope it to be, eggs were cooked perfectly, and the potatoes were delicious. My friend had the biscuits and gravy, she had equally as great of things to say about those. As well as her Bloody Mary which I'm pretty sure was the highlight of her morning. They offered us seats at the bar which was completely fine for our group of two. It was very comfortable and they have plexiglass up so if someone else were near by I would not have been concerned. Also plexiglass between us and the bartender with a small slot at the bottom for food and drink/payment transactions. The bartender was super relaxed and friendly and was beyond capable of making us feel accommodated. Something that may not be as important to most people. I Absolutely love the music they play here no matter the time of day, but hey that may just be me. I don't think they have ever played a song that I did not enjoy. Been visiting taproot a few times this year and each time is a different experience. Their food is good, but the service is hit or miss. Most recently, the lady and I visited two times in the last two months and both times got the same waitress. Nice and polite, but not very attentive. This place is nice, it's one of the healthier places there is. It's hard to find a decent place that has vegan options. I've also gotten food from their happy hour menu. The quesadilla is the best ever! Their happy hour starts at 3-6 on Mondays-Thursdays. I prefer their happy hour menu. They also have live music sometimes and gives the place a nice vibe. What a lovely place in the middle of downtown Salem. The tapas On the menu are unique and absolutely outstanding. The portion sizes for tapas are also very generous. We ordered the beet fries, Brussels sprouts, poutine and fried avocado and each one of those was top-notch. Although, I have to say that the brussels sprouts are my absolute favorite and highly recommended. Plenty of beer options as well and the staff is super nice and accommodating to make sure they give you all the information and samples to make the right choice for you. Went to Taproot at 3:00 today. We were seated right away. It was not crowded and there were maybe three or four other tables with diners. People who arrived after us (and sat right below us) were able to place their order. We sat there 20 minutes without being offered water or an opportunity to order. When I tried to point this out to the waitresses one questioned me about where we were sitting. We were perfectly visible at the only table in the front window! Pretty sad service!!! read more

Honestly I really don't leave reviews unless I am REALLY impressed. Taproot is great but my server Kelly really made the experience. I have a long history in the service industry so I know how hard this business can be. She is fkn amazing. I came in slight hangry and she was super patient with me, welcoming, going above and beyond with a sweet and caring demeanor never flinching even when I was snappy. She checked on me in the perfect amount of intervals. Seriously she makes this place a 10/10. Desert bowl was awesome. Local ciders hit the spot. No. Just no. We used to eat here years ago, post COVID, and it was our favorite place to eat. A friend warned us that it went downhill, but only due to Taproot being understaffed, and so we waved off the warning and went this afternoon. One of us ordered a juice containing many ingredients including beets. The waitress relayed the message that they were out of beets after everyone else received their drinks. We asked for the same juice we ordered just WITHOUT the beets. The waitress asked the juicer. "She will not make it for you (without the beets," they responded. Um, what? Then, our party received all our food except one person's entree. This entree did not appear until we were well into our meal. There was no apology, but we shook it off. As we left the establishment, someone (a worker -- but they didn't clarify their role there) followed us out onto the street and told us to call ahead/reserve a table next time for a party "more than 2." Taproot was nearly empty when we walked in the place... The food was not good at all and the staff wasn't friendly (I would say 'cold'). Sorry to see this happen to one of our favorites! read more

We just left Taproot and were beyond happy with our dinner. We read lots of reviews about breakfast but my review is about our outstanding Philosopher Bowl add chicken and hummus plate. Both were beyond flavorful/ tasty , an important thing to us, and filling. We also enjoyed a beer and wine. The atmosphere is fun and funky and our server Mick ( a really nice gal) were helpful and friendly. We were also greeted right when we arrived so we felt welcomed right away.
