The bartender was super kind and personable. They had an array of NA beers to choose from. The food was different but really good.

I had the delight of visiting the taproot this morning for breakfast on my last day in central Oregon! My server, Kelly, was delightful (some of the others gave off a vibe that I was not cool enough in my opinion) and even let me take a cup of drip to-go for my 5hr drive home! First of all, the aesthetic of this place is dreamy. It's funky, cozy, and just plain fun! The food I tried, too, was amazing. I got I believe it's called the farmers hash. It came with pulled pork on spinach with onions and red peppers and crunchy potatoes sauteed and two (perfectly cooked) eggs over easy (my choice, you can have them however). It was sooooooo flippin' delicious! It was packed with flavor. I didn't want to stop eating! It also came with fruit and toast, which I couldn't finish. I wish I lived closer! I'll make it a point to return next time I'm in town. read more

Some friends and I went there a few weeks ago and it was my first time there. I got some sort of chicken bowl and it was so good and the perfect portion size. The only thing I would say that didn't really meet my standards was it took like 15 minutes for the server to bring us water and I was very thirsty. This local downtown bar and eatery always does a brisk business and for good reason, it's SO GOOD. Breakfast lunch dinner and late night, all great. They have a bloody Mary you can probably order all day long but especially at breakfast is so ridiculously over the top satisfying, it could be a breakfast all by itself. Getting a breakfast dish too is almost like having two breakfasts. I/we have been there many times and a few times had what I'd call perfunctory service--efficient but not overly friendly--but this last time (mid-August 2024), our server was spot-on perfect: warm, friendly, efficient, etc. And you know how the food and ambiance can be great but the server can make or break your experience? She was great! The food is uniformly creative and fresh, and it is a great local place that I want to highly support. Lovely historic building, with some live music in the evenings. During good weather, they have outside dining tables as well. Word of caution: like all the other eating and drinking establishments at the intersection of State Street and Liberty Street that have outdoor dining, on nearly every Friday night throughout spring, summer and fall for the past two years (2023 and now 2024), you will be forced to listen to a truly awful street musician who is holding the entire neighborhood hostage with an electric guitar (same four chords over and over again), an amp, and some off-key tone-deaf "singing", who will make you wish you were eating indoors. If you see her there on a Friday night, you might want to ask to dine indoors. read more

I'm giving this place 2 stars because food was so delightful! However, service was not. We waited for our food for almost and hour!! Had two tables get sat after we did and they had received their food before we did. Once we finally got our food it took about 10 minutes, when the server came around trying to give us our ticket. Service was bad, bad, bad! Pretty empty but took a million years to place a drink order, then they were out of what was ordered of course. I had the Taproot tacos. If you like greasy tortillas with a few chunks of dried out chicken and a thimble of flavorless pico then this is the dish for you! A friend wanted to try it, I looked at the menu and saw it was more of a vegan, gluten free place so figured it would be on the bland side. Probably would have stayed for another beer at least but the waiter never asked, dropped the food and the bill and that was the last we saw of him. Awesome customer service! All of the staff were super nice and quick. The food was good- I wish I got the tacos like my partner did cause the bowl didn't really hit the spot, but the appetizers were delicious! The inside is super cool with art everywhere and it was cozy. Outside had tents with heaters that also looked nice. I'll have to come back next time for the tacos and a drink! Oh My goodness how many things can you get wrong? We walked to this place from Willamette day of graduation this last weekend. We told our waiter we only had 45 minutes and he assured us we could get our food and eat in that amount of time. Well we sat outside in the rain cause there was no where to sit inside and every other restaurant was closed for it being a sunday. My son, friend and I ordered immediately as we had to uber back to the hotel and change for the ceremony. Well after 20 minutes, our waiter came and told me they could not find any of the ingredients for the sandwich I ordered which was the chicken salad sandwich, knowing we were in a hurry he waited 20 minutes to tell me! Then I said fine ill just take the grilled cheese, but can you add the pesto and that was on the other sandwich and tomato and turkey or chicken? Sure, no problem. I said we will take it to go so let us know how long, so we can order our uber. My friend ordered the veggie burger as she has been a vegetarian her whole life. We zoom out of there boxes in hand we get to the hotel open the boxes and they gave my friend a CHICKEN sandwich!!! and they didn't give me pesto they put feta on my grilled cheese which was GROSS no meat whatsoever. What the hell. My awful grilled cheese on white bread was inedible and cost me $17!!! My Friends Vegi burger that was a chicken sandwich cost her $18. We couldn't eat anything and starved all thru a three-hour graduation. If the owner sees this, I really wish you would give us a refund because that was a disgrace. read more

So delicious! The Brussels sprouts dipped in the vegan ranch are INSANE. My friend had the Willamette PB&J and I got the Mediterranean with chicken added. We were starving after a long walk around Riverfront park and gobbled our food down in pretty much 10 seconds flat. Can't wait to come back and try more. Served wasn't thrilled when I asked about the specials, pointed me to the CR code menu which has no specials listed. Service wasn't great but food was enough. The outside is decieving as it looks like any tavern. However once through the door you step into a cool, nice café that happens to serve beer, wine and spirits along with teas, smoothies, and an eclectic assortment of eatables. We stopped in because The Taproot came up in Yelp when we searched for vegetarian food. The higher ratings and interesting reviews were helpful in making the brave step past the "tavern" facade. I ordered the davacado, fried avocado and the Mint to be Blue smoothie. My date had the Power Fusion and Desert bowl. Smoothies; Mint to be was very good. I tasted the Power Fusion and we agreed, it was a bit odd, mild up front, and then kale and strong ginger and at the end of the flovors. We wouldn't reorder this one. The Desert bowl was healthy, different and good. sweet and savory, filling. The Davacado was yummy, unique and as it was a "Tapa," a smaller portion, more of a smack, which is what I expected. The overhead fan is sort-of "Industrial / Steampunk" and a bit of a noisy distraction. The decor features a lot of nice wood with one wall red brick. We would return to explore the menu. read more

Taproot has it all- classic fare, creative foods from the Taproot cranium, and beverages to keep you hydrated or entertained while you chill in this chill cafe. We got the Brussels and Kalbi Tacos our server recommended. I would definitely get the Davi tacos of this genre again, but maybe not the chicken- it clashes with the pickled veggies a bit. I love the atmosphere in the Taproot Cafe and I will most definitely be coming back soon! read more

Then when I paid, we waited some more because they did not bring the ticket or card back. This was a quick stop on a bachelorette tour so the bride to be could get her favorite mojito and the group was raving about how good the Brussels sprouts were supposed to be so we got some as well. WOW! Seriously some of the best Brussels spouts I've ever had! I really want to recreate them for the upcoming holidays. Make sure you get them loaded! However, this place had the worst service. We were only here for a quick drink and it took such a long time. Had to go to the bar just to get our bill and pay so that we weren't stuck here for another hour. Tap root for has been a great option for me on fresh and light food options that are creative with local ingredients. I come back infrequently but always feeling satisfied with the experience. First time in town and made the mistake of coming to this place because my kid wanted a burger, should have read the fine print about them NOT serving any beef. Wait staff was inattentive and slow at best, and multiple people forgot multiple items that had been requested. Not to mention my 6 yr old was with me and I had to explain why the word VAGINA was on a poster they had right at the front door!! This place. It STILL takes forever to get noticed, your order taken, and food served. We rolled the dice and tried TR, again. Because late night food in Salem is limited. Ordered nachos, added chicken. Tiny amount of toppings - a smattering of cheese and beans, little bit of small pieces of chicken on top of a mound of naked chips. Even worse tho, the food was cold. The shredded cheese was unmelted, toppings cold. So, we asked nicely, no attitude, if they could re-heat it. They were nice enough. We'd already waited quite a while to get this far. I watched server carry it back and then never saw her again, I'm to this day still waiting. Not true. I saw our server again. My dining companion at some point started timing. We were at least 14 minutes into a nacho reheat, when I saw our server shoving food in her mouth at the bar. That's when we left. Walked out. Byeeee Taproot. Salem's pretty desperate for late night eats, too bad this is what they're stuck with. read more

Taproot is the shit. You can get 3 chipotle ranch tacos for $9. They are to die for, and the bowls are really good too! Staff can sometimes be hit or miss, and they can be a little too conversational at time asking too personal of questions. And when it's busy I just recommend either making a reservation or coming back later due to the chill environment people feel the entitlement to just hang out for a little too long. You'll be waiting for close to 45min on a Friday even if you order to go. But if you find yourself near by and there is no line I highly recommend! read more

Had my first experience at Taproot this morning with my boyfriend. I ordered the Kickstarter Juice and Eggs Benedict with the house hollandaise...BEST BENEDICT EVER! And the potatoes? whatever Magic they put in the potatoes...had me licking my plate. My boyfriend got the breakfast tacos and the BFK...just wow! I so wish I lived in Salem, I'd eat here often! I was town for Ironman & found this gem. GF, dairy free options and the food & fresh juice was fantastic! The GF bread was delish! Servers were super friendly & accommodating. Side note - I don't enjoy dogs sharing my indoor dining space - I was impressed and relieved to hear staff tell dog owners that if their pups were well behaved, they were welcome. We came here because of the raving reviews, only to be disappointed. First off, $6.50 for an apple juice for my kid? Second, I ordered some sort of breakfast hash. It is hardly considered a hash when there are less than four mini bite sized pieces of potatoes. It was all spinach and didn't come as described. It was supposed to have potatoes and cabbage. There was no cabbage. It clearly said it was served with a side of their homemade blackberry jam and when I asked for it, the lady (not our server) who brought our food was snarky and said "it doesn't automatically come with it, but I'll bring it anyway." So this particular meal was disappointing, lacking and flavorless. My daughter ordered the brunch and was served a nice, long piece of hair in the middle of all her biscuits and gravy. Why? Because most of the employees do not pull their hair back and the ones that do, do it messy style so there is plenty of room for hair to make its way on to your plate! Never again. read more
