We went here because we heard there were many options for vegetarians and there were. The food was very good and the prices, especially the Happy Hour prices, were reasonable. I would have given five stars except the bar didn't deliver our house Margaritas in a timely way. I am pretty sure he gave our drinks to another table and after 15 minutes I finally went to the bar and was handed two drinks one of which had paprika which we didn't order or want. Now for the food. The tacos can be ordered with any type of meat or potatoes or black beans if you are vegetarian. We also got nachos that had a good helping of black beans. There were other vegetarian options like pinto beans, cheese or bean enchiladas, quesadillas, bean burritos. And you can modify order for vegan preference as well. After touring the Mexican Restaurants of Ashland, I can confirm that Taqueria Picaro is the best Mexican food in town. I had the cheese enchiladas (one green, one red) and the cheese is thick and delicious. Beans and rice were quality. The nachos with potatoes are key. And the chicken tortilla soup will warm you up inside any time of the year. Staff is happy, friendly, and prompt (which is not all that usual in Ashland, don't know why). It is fast casual (heavy on the casual in terms on ambiance), meaning you have to order at the counter (table service is in the bar only), but when your order comes up someone will bring it right to your table. And we didn't wait long. All said, visit with confidence. You will not be disappointed. Oh, and find a spot to park somewhere else and walk in. There is rarely a spot out front. read more

As I inch towards my limit of stress, I consider what will give me just a slice of respite. The answer to suit the moment, the band aid for the day, is the one I consistently turn to in my time of need. Tacos will fit the bill - they always do. Taqueria Picaro is located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest town of Ashland, Oregon, where they serve up a delicious menu of Mexican fare. I entered the restaurant, my husband in tow, and am greeted by brightly colored walls, unique artwork, and festive music. I immediately noticed the space was clean and inviting, and the heavenly smells from the kitchen left me salivating for what was to come. The staff were helpful and friendly without hovering. We ordered chips and guacamole with the house made salsa. The chips were sturdy and perfect for dipping into that glorious, perfectly flavored guacamole that has just the right amount of lime, garlic, salt, and onion. We added a side of refried beans to level up the buffet of dips at the table. I would highly recommend this addition. The salsa was mild and not as thrilling as the guacamole, but the addiction of their orange hot sauce forgave the discrepancies of the salsa. This spicy delight packed the heat, but unlike many hot sauces, the heat did not sacrifice the flavor. While the orange sauce took top prize, the green sauce deserves recognition. It was even spicier than the orange, almost too much even for my experienced palate. The green lava was also packed with citrusy flavor and became a wonderful addition to my tacos. We ordered an assortment of tacos: black bean, picadillo beef, al pastor, and potato with veggies. The star of the show was the picadillo beef, and in a surprising twist, the black beans took second. The beef was literally dripping with flavor; the essence of woah and wow crossed my mind after my first bite, leaving me with an overall sense of yum. This taco made the world a slightly better place, at least for a moment. After trying the black bean taco, my faith in humanity was restored. These tacos were cradled in fresh, home-made tortillas that positively added to the whole experience. Unfortunately, the al pastor was dry, and the potato and vegetable taco was just alright. This slight downturn in flavor failed to dampen my overall experience. As for libations, Taqueria Picaro leaves little to be desired. My husband chose Topo Chico, a classic staple of the taco shop. I ordered the house margarita and was not disappointed. It was everything a margarita needs to be - sweet, salty, lime-filled, and tasty! The tequila ratio was spot on, leaving me satisfied, not buzzed, and the salted rim and lime wedge brought it home for a strong finish. The restaurant can be found downtown and close to many local attractions. It has street parking, which is not ideal. If you find yourself without many parking options, drive down to Lithia Park and make a walk through beautiful Ashland part of the adventure. We got to the restaurant in time for happy hour. The price point is regularly accessible and fair and happy hour made it a really great deal. Overall, Taqueria Picaro is well located, friendly, and fun. In this cruel game of trickery we call life, I feel as though I have been catfished. Like a gullible young man on a dating service, I was cheated out of the wonders I had expected from such a beautiful image. While everything looked appealing, and the ambiance was fine, the textures and flavors of the ingredients were generally disappointing. The sauces were good, and the ingredients tasted fresh, but everything felt kind of haphazard. My best guess is that the head chef, while extremely talented, is somewhat injured, perhaps limping from one station to another in the kitchen. The nachos were good, with some very interesting and delightful toppings, but even after ordering both kinds of possible cheeses, there was nary a strand to be found. Some of the tacos, like the fish and shrimp were well executed and delicious. However, I have high expectations regarding Al Pastor, because it generally impresses. I've been there two times in the last week, and both times the meat in the tacos were VERY dry. The second time I made sure to try on e of each meats in my tacos. Sadly, all dry...seriously. Please fix this. I don't know if the meat's being over-cooked or left to simmer too hot. I love the ambiance, staff and the rest of the sides. Please get this meat more tender. This is the second time visiting this spot. Ordered their mango margarita with the spicy rim. Wow! Has quite a kick! Mahi mahi fish tacos hits the spot too! Guacamole was excellent. One of the best places to grab food in Ashland! They have decent prices for food and drinks. Taco Tuesday is great. They have a good location with a nice inside. It can definitely get crowded in there but that's cause a lot of people enjoy it. And it is usually easy to find a spot. They also have longer hours than most places in Ashland which is awesome because there is not too many options in the other hours. My one critique is that some things like their fish taco needs sauce to be better (in my opinion). One thing I really appreciate is how I don't have a stomach ache after my meal here! Not a problem in and of itself, but it meant the first bite of everything was bland until we added salt. Came to visit Ashland, Oregon with my family. We were starving and a lot of places were not open. We came across this place and it looked very nice and clean from the outside. They were out of a couple of stuff, but it happens. I ordered nachos with carne asada and my husband ordered a torta de carne asada. When we actually opened our food it looked like ground beef that was boiled. Im from California and maybe Oregon just cooks their Mexican food not so Mexican style, but this wasn't what I was expecting AT ALL.
