Love this place! Came upon it as I was walking through downtown Ashland and it had a nice looking interior with high ceilings. A happy hour menu was posted in the window-from 4-5pm every day of the week. We got in during happy hour and were able to score one of the few outdoor creekside tables. It was super pleasant to be able to sit outside and hear the creek while eating delicious food. Ordered the house made blackberry soda-pretty good. Also had the happy hour fried chicken and hh burger, as well as the scallops off of the main menu. The burger was thick and juicy. My kids and husband said the fries were some of the best they've had-crispy exterior and soft interior. Fried chicken had a light crispy coating on the outside and the honey Aleppo mixture was great, though son said it could've used a little more salt. My scallops were some of the best scallops I've ever had before--so well cooked and perfectly seasoned and with these thinly sliced snap peas that were just barely blanched that added texture and freshness to the dish. For dessert I had the olive oil cake with fresh berries--so delicious and perfect way to top off the meal. Service was pretty good. Would def be back! read more

I'm saddened. I've worked in restaurants my entire adult life. As a chef at two James Beard-winning restaurants, a server, owner, and consultant, I have dedicated my life to the food industry and the people within it. I'm from Ashland, and I was so happy when places like this started showing up in my hometown. Good food and atmosphere can be so hard to find. Coming home to Ashland can be a true oasis for my family. My wife and I have made it our life's mission to make our daughter feel equal and included. Our daughter was born with a rare condition called AMC and does not have normal function in any of her limbs. She currently spends 3-4 days a week in physical therapy to continue building strength so her body and organs can function properly. We were visiting family at the park and suggested stopping in for a beverage and snacks to escape the heat after a long day. We typically plan everything ahead to ensure wherever we go can accommodate my daughter's wheelchair and needs. When we arrived, we thought, "Wow, perfect, she can wheel right in and up to one of the many open tables." Once we were "greeted" by the host, I realized we were not who she wanted to deal with. Three kids, three adults, a stroller, and a wheelchair. She looked like she wanted nothing to do with us, like we were dirt on her shoe. "No reservation," she said. I replied, "Yeah, so sorry, we figured since it was a Monday night right when you opened, and there were only two two-tops seated, we could probably find somewhere to sit." I reassured her we would not stay long enough to impact reservations at the larger front tables, which usually have reserved markers on them but did not at the time. We could all feel that she didn't want to seat us, and we left despite me practically begging to make something work for us, because I know she could have if she wanted to. Being from the industry, I understand what kids can do to an atmosphere, and I know a lot of restaurant workers don't enjoy dealing with other people's children. But when we went outside and my daughter cried and said, "They didn't want me there" So I loaded my daughter's wheelchair back into the car so I could carry her up the stairs at Brickroom, where one employee was working the entire place and took amazing care of us, I might add. We resorted to a booster seat for my daughter since she couldn't use her wheelchair there. She ended up falling out of the seat and slamming onto the hardwood floor. She cried and was embarrassed. The young man tending bar while also waiting every table rushed over with a bag of ice to comfort her. It was honestly touching how kind he was. When we left Brickroom, we had spent more time there than we originally intended to spend at Bar Juliet. As we walked back by Bar Juliet, we noticed the restaurant was still only about half full, and one of the large front tables had remained open the entire time from around 4:10 until 5:40 when we walked by again. I had to stop and ask the host why she couldn't have seated us considering that table never filled. Her only explanation was, "Our kitchen is slow getting food out." Such an incredibly weak excuse. I hope she understands she was wrong and that she made my daughter feel unwanted simply because accommodating us wasn't convenient for her. I have never left a review in my life, but I was so saddened and disgusted by this experience that I felt I had to. read more

My mother (84), my sister, and I had dinner here last night. We had a 4:00 PM reservation and arrived a few minutes early. We were the first people there, and someone yelled from the back of the bar, "We're not open yet." No one came over to greet us or let us wait for a few minutes, which felt surprisingly rude. When we returned and were seated (Table 12), we ordered quite a bit -- warm olives, crudo, two arugula salads, a pasta dish, wine, and a mocktail. Service was extremely slow. Our olives didn't arrive until around 4:35. After our food arrived, we were largely ignored. When the waitress finally came by and asked how everything was, we said it was good, but she didn't ask if we wanted anything else or offer dessert menus. After sitting there for quite a while, we eventually started stacking our own plates as a signal that we were ready for the next course. After another long stretch, my mother flagged her down so we could order dessert and coffee. As a group of international Travelers I found this place very pretentious. While some of the flavors were excellent five dishes served over time took a very long time. And then the waitress was very interesting. She described the pork chop as a kosher raised pig coming from a Mennonite farm in Idaho, first time for me, I had Kosher pork? But overall the food is good, service could definitely improve, especially by educating the servers about the food offered. read more

The food we had here is polished and light: - Olives were tender and flavorful - Cucumber yogurt salad was quite bright and fresh - Shishito peppers were very light and easy to munch on, I would not have minded some more spiciness amd a bit more tartness to the lemon sauce - My wife liked the tomato panzanella quite a bit, though this was just too much raw tomato for me - Scallops were tasty with nicely charred corn - scallops were cooked just right on the inside but lacking just a bit of sear on the outside (this is preferable being overcooked for sure) - My daughter liked.here butter sauce pasta - We had a bottle of German white wine which was a great value at $30 - Nice area out back near the creek to eat al fresco, or a lively bar scene inside The above was not too much food for 2 people. $170 out the door was not cheap but seemed fair. read more

Brace yourself for a conflicted food review. Bar Juliet is a well-known and revered spot for locals. Historically I have enjoyed their outstanding cocktails, but find their food overhyped. I often roll my eyes and accompany friends for dinner. Indeed, if you glance at the menu, you'll find their basic spaghetti dish listed for $36 and their house salad runs for $25. Other classic plates (steak, halibut) run at about $40, but the portion size of these dishes doesn't match the typical fine dining restaurant. Their kitchen sort of runs on-the-fly and so you are expected to order several dishes to share, which come out at their own pace. My qualm is you end up eating like you're at a tapas spot all the while paying full fine-dining price for each plate. Nevermind the economics lesson, let's talk food. We started with the charcuterie board which was one of the best I've had at a restaurant. Lots of bold flavors and textures between the cheeses and meats. The focaccia bread was also fresh, airy, and excellent. I would actually recommend getting this even if you're going out just for drinks. The peach-flavored old fashioned was a hit, and we also tried a potent lavender cocktail which was super unique. The main dishes we got were well-executed. The steak was a petite filet that was superbly tender accompanied by a red pepper sauce. Small portion with a light salad, but delicious. The burger was very rich and had the density of a dying sun (just look at the cross-section!). Contrary to what you may think, this is a dish to cut up and share. On this night, service was an issue--my poor friend's main entree was forgotten. He ordered a burger for himself and we waited for the kitchen to roll it out and it just never came. I was prepared to give the place 4 stars and warn you to just go during happy hour, but will have to stop short at 3. Can't believe this was my first time at this fabulous restaurant Bar Juillet on the plaza in Ashland. I had their most delicious fried chicken, boro beet salad along with the piggy punch cocktail topped off with their amazing flourless chocolate cake. Everything was a delectable, high level, big city culinary treat. The wait staff was fantastic and I learned that the building is now in the original pathway between two 1880's brick buildings towards Ashland Creek and Calle Guanajuato in the back. As my first time trying Bar Juillet I was pleased and curiosity satisfied but I'm not sure I feel compelled to visit it a second time. The entire vibe is a bit eclectic with food ranging from ricotta focaccia to fried chicken to Za'tar seasoned fries. Our server gave us advanced notice when we were sat that all of the food is brought whenever it's ready so dishes may be significant gaps apart. It's meant to be family style which makes sense but even for family style it was certainly unique having just one of the appetizers coming 20 minutes before the second app. Food: even by Ashland standards it's a bit overpriced for food with a side of fries being $10 by itself, $19 burger, ranging to dishes near $40. The Za'tar fries had a delicious reading but the fries with the burger left much to be desired as they didn't feel very seasoned. Either the higher price the burger isn't small with a double patty and bacon- it felt like a true "all-American" burger. Drinks: To be fair, their cocktails were between $15-17 and were certainly "craft" and not your average "red-solo-cup" drinks so that was well worth it. A fun place with lots of character on the plaza in downtown Ashland. Lots of craft cocktails to choose from. In the spirit of oncoming summer, I started with the gin and tonic, which I renamed the pink sucker punch. It's a tasty drink that surpasses the staid English go to for old farts. Had the Gems salad, which was a well rounded bowl of delights -- radishes, avocado, gem lettuce in a house vinaigrette that hums. We then went to the crisp, which was fine but not extraordinary -- blame it on my indifference to rhubarb, which I've always found nothing more than a way to confuse strawberries. For the "main" course we had the fried chicken, which came as a huge serving of four beautifully crisp pieces of juicy breast meat coated in a nicely spiced Aleppo chili breading and coated in just enough of "Ted's" honey to make a bee weep but not so much as to enrage the queen. The Calabrian cream sauce will Make you weep because it's so good. On my night, the chef had prepared a pickled fennel slaw that was the star of the dish. I without shame asked for more. It was such a nice touch. Bravo. I paired my chicken with a 2022 Fuchs & Hase 'Pet Nat Vol II' bubbly that stood up nicely to the complexity of the chicken. I may have stumbled upon some of the best fried chicken in the valley. We dropped into Bar Juillet in Ashland last night for happy hour and tried their boneless fried chicken ($15). It came out of the kitchen hot and crispy, plated over a heavy schmear of a spicy Calabrian Ranch remoulade with Aleppo chili flakes. The chicken was plump, tender and juicy inside with a wonderful crunchy coating outside, that was seasoned just right (not overly salted). The generously cut pieces (all 4 were white meat) were finished with Ted's Honey before serving, adding a bit more heat to the party going on in my mouth. After savoring the experience for a moment, I washed it down with a glass of house-made lemonade over ice. I will definitely be coming back here for this dish alone. It was that good. I had bookmarked Juillet to try, but I never made it in last year. Since I was coming up for my graduation, why not come here and treat myself for my accomplishment! They had a good size dining room, and a really nice bar, which is where I sat. The staff is really friendly! I ordered the Hither Old Fashion to start. They have a number of craft cocktails, and this one called to me since I had just flown in. This was very good and a great beginning! I started with the Lety's Greens. Really good mix and the dressing was soooo good! I had read another review about the rigatoni, and the sausage and broccolini were so good with the pasta. However, this was different than the picture I had seen. The chef works with what is fresh and seasonal, and this version was delicious! I tried to order the Ovum cab but it was not available and the bartender, Felipe, gave me a sample of the Ultra Violet, and it was really good! Rounding out the evening, I had the kitchen choose the dessert for me, and out came a flourless chocolate cake with brandied cherries (?) This went well with the rest of the wine, Felipe even gave me just a splash more to enjoy the cake with. For my first meal back in Ashland, this was a great place to come to! I have never written a restaurant review before tonight but I feel compelled to make a comment or two. We were two couples, lived in Ashland for over 50 yers. They want you to order family style but the dishes are not family style. Our server warned us that if we shared, the cold dishes came out first and the hot protein came out later. The cold salads were very expensive , so we each ordered a burger and fries so we could eat at the same time. The fries were ok but the burger was swimming in grease. The food was awful. I will never go there again, not to mention the thumping music so it was difficult to have a conversation and don't have the shrub, its like drinking a glass of vinegar. This restaurant is in a great location for tourists who are going to the plays. I have traveled all over the world and I have to say this is the worst food ever. I was warned by other friends and I should have listened. The server had a tattoo on her arm that said "SAVE YOURSELF" , I am not sure what that meant, but maybe it meant save yourself from this restaurant. Had expectations but this place is just off. First off, the food is very good. But the rest of the experience from a dirty table to a clunky reservation service to service that is marginal to loud obnoxious music all cast a sort of pall on the whole thing. Won't divide a bill between parties (because of policy) and doesn't serve plates at the same time because they aren't made that way. Some are made faster than others. Huh? The drinks were equally as delicious as evident by me almost trying every drink on the menu! The ambiance is quaint, well decorated and super inviting. The service is also superb I and the pleasure of being helped by Birend and Felipe who both went above and beyond. They provided recommendations not only from the menu, but gave me ideas of things to do locally in Ashland. Bland chicken, more sweet than salty, with bland sauce that tastes almost exactly the same in terms of flavor profile (sweet and barely salty) as the chicken. The fries on the other hand are over seasoned, too salty, the point it hurts your tongue and makes you grimace. Either someone fucked up or this place sucks lol how do you fuck up fried food that's been on your menu for years? If this is just because it was take out then explain how the food was picked up immediately and eaten immediately after, with maybe two minutes of time in the to go box. For nearly $40 this was a rip off. Couldn't even finish it cus it just wasn't good. We stop in here every time we pass through Ashland. Cannot recommend enough! Service is fantastic: prompt but no pressure. Cocktail and mocktails are delicious. Don't miss the fried chicken (this is def meant to be shared) and the fresh pasta dishes are incredible. They are doing a penne with a chicken ragú OMG, but we did have a tiny bit of buyer's remorse after seeing the veg spaghetti being ordered by everyone around us. So I only came in for a drink during happy hour. But the Margarita I got was quite tasty, and had really fancy salt on it. Also, at $12 I felt it was a pretty good price for a fancy cocktail. I had a couple of the fries that my friend ordered and they were solid. Very clean, classy, modern decor. When we arrived around 5 there weren't many people in there, but when we left just before six it was starting to get pretty full. What a magical experience. I took my sister in law here for a little girls night and we had such a good time. The cocktail called paper plane was an elegant treat and the steak was beyond incredible. Eating at bar, Juliette was an amazing experience. Our server Elizabeth was exceptional as was the entire staff. She was engaging, genuinely friendly and a delight to be around. Our glasses were never empty, the food was brought out timely and hot and tasted amazing. We started with their homemade bread and burrata. It was so fresh and delicious and melts in your mouth. Next came the Delicata - the maple balsamic sauce was rich and sweet and a little spicy. Next was the Fried Chicken. Omg - crunchy crust and tender meat, steaming hot and full of flavor. It's the place that nobody knows how to pronounce. Being in Shakespeare town, it's no wonder that everyone sees "Juliet", when really it's the French word for 'July', pronounced more like 'jou-WHEE-yay". But nobody is reading this review for French language lessons from me, nor should they, so on to the actual review. This is a second restaurant in Ashland for a big-city experienced food industry couple, and I'm happy they have decided to choose our hometown for theirs. Bar Juillet's Cocktail game and bartender staff is grade 'A'. They've consistently had some great people, and they take pride in this part of the experience. Don't overlook the daily special Piggy Punch which comes in a unique serving ceramic pig. I'm not a sweet cocktail person, typically, but for this I make an exception. The place is great for a drink or 2 at the bar. For Appetizers, we've been happy with everything, though we are partial to the olives and burrata. For main menu, some are going to find the selection a bit limited, but what is there is quite outstanding. You are going to hear people shout from the rooftops about their incredible Fried Chicken, and there's a reason for that. It's that beautiful combination of spicy, sweet, crispy and savory that makes it extremely difficult NOT to order. Because their menu is very seasonal based on local sourcing, it's hard to say what else will be there on any given day/week, but that's part of what makes their offerings so great. I've found their service staff engaging and knowledgeable...that's not easy in this day and age, so merits my notice. We'll definitely be returning for drinks, appetizers, and more. read more

This is THE cocktail bar in Ashland. If you are visiting town and want something a little more upscale and has serious ambiance, then I highly recommend Bar Juillet. Most importantly, the vibe of this spot is FANTASTIC! With the exposed brick, mood lighting, and tasteful decorations, it is a very romantic and trendy date night spot. The cocktails are so delicious as well! Their master bartender is constantly changing up the menu to add unique twists to classic drinks. Their toasted marsh mellow old fashioned is to die for! If you're feeling cheeky, I would recommend ordering the "piggy punch." It changed every week and is served out of a fun pig glass! It is always so cool to see what the drink is each week! Personally, I love just going and sitting at the bar. The space is super lively and you never know who you might run into. The bartenders are so friendly too! Came to Bar Juillet based on some recommendations. Turns out not a good connection. We arrived at our given time tonight, graciously seated and ready to pick our menu items. Upon ordering we were told items would come out as they were prepared...okay small kitchen so it is what it is. Two salads, spaghetti, and fried chicken were ordered by the party of 4. We waited with the understanding that it might take some time. Others who came in after us and ordered many of the same dishes and were served before us. After waiting almost 30 minutes. After placing our order, the two salads came out; another 15 minutes then the chicken came out. We were told the spaghetti was being plated, yet it took another five or so minutes for that to come out. What did not take long to come out was the bill. I fully understand a small kitchen needs to balance work space and all yet when other parties arrive after you and are served the same dishes first it is not cool Food was well prepared and tasted good, but the connection between kitchen and service needs work read more
