The ratio of the crunch of the flour tortilla to the perfectly tender steak bites and all the tasty accoutrements, makes my taste bud sing hallelujah! My go-to chimichanga joint is Taqueria Los Comales on 18th street, but one day I did a chimichanga search from my Hyde Park domain and found TV. I passed this establishment many times but never ventured inside. I was so excited to have found chimichangas close-by, I ordered right away and rushed over to grab my order. It was ready as soon as I walked in and when I got home and ripped open my package, I bit down into chimichanga excellence! Came recently for lunch at this unexpectedly good taqueria in Kenwood. It's in a little strip mall in a not great looking area but is convenient to the 47th Street bus line. Taqueria Veritas has a Mexican menu including of course tacos. Basically these are what's recommended, but there's certainly other stuff one can get. You can also find many incredible vegetarian protein options if not wanting beef, pork, or any meats. A hard to find place if you've never been here before. It's away from the street a bit in a plaza. The inside is very small, and you order at the counter and can sit at the couple of tables or by the window. Most people seem to get carryout. The first time here I ate inside. I got the Taco Dinner. It's about $12 for 3 tacos. There's a protein choice including one for vegans. Also this comes with a side, and I got rice and beans. The vegan protein choices were soy steak, tofu, and vegetables. I got one of each. The soy steak was actually tofu but it was firm and seasoned like steak. The tofu one was softer and had a fluffy texture. Good place to pop into at lunch. It doesn't have much room inside so don't bring a lot of people though. I have always been very pleased with the quality of the food and vegetarian options at this spot. However, the day before yesterday I decided to try something new. I placed an order on the phone. The veggie Quesabirria dinner is $19.50. I asked the owner if she likes it. She said it tastes good, but it is too much cheese for her. When I looked at my order out in the car, I saw it contained two quesabirria and clear broth. Looked good, but a bit heavy (as she had said). My plate did not have rice and beans, I discovered. When I asked about this, the owner said that they serve them with the vegetables (chopped onion and cilantro), and had decided that that is the whole dinner. No problem, I'll just order a side of rice and beans. She would not sell me rice and beans for $3. which is the add-on price to turn 2-4 tacos into a dinner. Instead, she insisted that if I wanted rice and beans, I had to buy little 4oz container of each for a total of $8. Really?! I suggested they fill one container half rice/half beans. She mumbled something about "This is how we do it, with the containers and everything." Huh?! So, I can buy two $5.25 tacos and you will give me rice and beans for $3 (Total $13.50). But I buy tacos baked with extra cheese and deep fried for $19.50 and you can't sell me rice and beans for less than $8.00 ??? Make it make sense. When I let her know that I drive from Woodlawn because I really like their food, but felt that it is unfair to charge me $27.50. plus tax for two specialty tacos with rice and beans. When I told her I drive past a couple of places-- she arrogantly gloated, "My food is better than their's." Yeah, I just told YOU that. But something is wrong with your heart. So, no thanks! I'll go places where my food is served with love and respect for me and the rest of my community. This is Chicago! Plus, there was barely any cilantro and onion, which are usually key for that fresh and zesty kick. The meat is so dry it's like biting into breaded and fried beef jerky. Perhaps with a different protein this would be a good option. The bread was good, it's served on a bolillo not a telera. They do add sour cream, cheese, avocado, a tiny bit of shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes and onions, and refried beans. It seemed expensive but maybe because I didn't enjoy it, the dinner was $13.75 plus $3.00 for a small horchata. Finally there's a decent option for Mexican food in the area. Taqueria Varitas isn't the best Mexican food I've eaten but it's decent and better than anything you'll find in the immediate vicinity. The young lady greeted me and said she'd be with me shortly. The restaurant space is small but it's clean and inviting so eating in would be an acceptable option. There's a large TV on the wall that was playing some program in Spanish. The young lady rung up the orders and there was at least one cook in the back. I opted for the taco dinner which came with three tacos, rice and beans. I got one beef taco and two steak tacos. The tacos are served traditionally (cilantro and onions) or with lettuce, tomato and cheese. I opted for the latter. They give you a ample portion size of meat which was nice. The tacos were flavorful topped with fresh ingredients. The rice was okay but I wouldn't say it was exactly memorable. And the refried beans were runny and lacked flavor. The beans were the worst part of the meal. So much so that if I ever returned, I'd simply order tacos and a side of rice. It's a plus that they actually serve Mexican Coke too. The prices are average for Mexican food. I paid $9 for the taco dinner and nearly $14 including the Coke and tax. Overall, I was pleased with my first experience. This place was our saving grace after spending a few hours at the Museum of Science + Industry! My family and I drove past 53rd street since parking was unavailable and we were starving. Thanks to Yelp and GPS, we found Taqueria Varitas in Bronzeville. We ordered two tortas - one with chicken milanesa and another with steak. The bolillo bread was amazingly crisp on the outside and the breaded meats were cooked perfectly. My 5yo son is a picky eater who's not a fan of corn tortilla so I was happy to hear they serve tacos on flour tortillas upon request. We added a cup of corn with all the goods - butter, mayo, cotija cheese, Valentina sauce. Horchata was good too.
