I came here after dinner with just enough room to spare for some samples and two wonderful scoops of Mayan Chocolate & Molasses :D The Mayan Chocolate was semi-sweet and ended with a nice heated kick at the back of my throat. MMmmmm sweet AND spice! Molasses-sticky (in a good way) and helped balance out some of the spice from the Mayan Chocolate. It was a good combination. My friends had the burnt caramel (mmmm caramel......) and double chocolate chip. Everything tasted great, but not overly indulgent where you feel weighed down afterwards. It was just the perfect way to end a good night with good friends. **Service was excellent. She was so patient that my friends and I tried most of their flavors. You know, I'm not exactly sure how ice cream was made upon it's invention (and to be honest, I'm too fuckin lazy to look it up), but I'm pretty sure it's not made in any way, shape or form like it is at Tara's...save for the natural and fresh ingredients. When I was first introduced to Tara's, it posed as an establishment of contradiction in the terms of ice cream conventions. Organic? Relatively healthy? Baobab?! (that's an edible African root I learned of yesterday, you guessed it, from Tara's. No, I wouldn't recommend it in a million years). For anyone who hails solely from the Loard's or Fenton's school of ice cream, this place may perplex you as it did to me, but don't bother trying to wrap your head around such things. Instead, you should keep pestering the staff at Tara's for a sample of every flavor, no matter if you found the one you liked within the second sample. Their ever changing menu makes it a bit more difficult to acquire a favorite, that and the price. You basically pay almost twice as much as you would at a BR or normal ice cream place....but trust me, eating organic stuff every once in a while won't kill ya. In spite of the endless lists of flavors, I've come to be especially fond of the yerba mate. For those unfamiliar, it's a leaf that is made into tea in South America, and as an ice cream it shares a great deal of resemblance to green tea (something my girlfriend pointed out to me while we exchanged flavors). If you like fruitier flavors, this place is also great. The raspberry I tried from here had a subtle blasts ( yes, a subtle blasts...it was muted yet very apparent) of genuine raspberry flavor...mixed in with ice cream...kinda cool. One thing to keep in mind, while virtually impossible to avoid, is never go here while on a schedule or time constraint. If you arrive and there is a line, you're screwed. The flavors tend to be so outlandish and intriguing it makes everyone want damn near every sample (I'm guilty of this as well) and even 3 patrons in front of you can cause an extra wait of 15 minutes...if they're considerate. read more

First of all, they didn't have all the flavors listed on their website. For example, we didn't see the orange cashew but that wasn't the problem. The service was perfect. Super friendly and nice. The problem was that I found their ice cream too sweet. I liked the sesame waffle cone for 80 cents but that was too sweet too. I thought Ici's had less sugar. We both had the chai ice cream and the rosemary almond ice cream. The chai ice cream was so sweet that after a few licks, all I could taste was sugar. It was so sweet that it was unpleasant. The rosemary almond was less sweet and had a very nice herbal flavor so we ordered a pint to go. I sampled ginger, kumquat and lavender. The ginger was really boring and sweet. The kumquat too sour and the lavender reminded me of soap. We will come back but we will have to be more discriminating. My hubby likes sweet things but he too agreed that the chai ice cream was just too sweet. I wish they would lower the sugar content so that you can taste the ingredients better. First time ever having black sesame ice cream and it was everything I would have imagined it to be, the flavor was spot on. My favorite ice cream flavor of all time is coffee and I may have to say....Tara's coffee ice cream is the best (if not top 2) I have had in my ice cream eating career. I was warmly greeted a lady behind the counter. There were so many flavors to choose from. But once I saw Lavender, I was like "OMG!!!" I heart Lavender! So I sampled it. Yum. I also tried Strawberry Balsamic. Sounds strange right? ... but let me tell you, it's GOOD! I also sampled White Pepper Chocolate Chip, which was recommended by the sweet lady behind the counter. White Pepper Choc Chip was... meh. She said it was a popular flavor, but I didn't like it that much. I like that Tara's offers half scoops of ice cream. I am so glad for friends that branch out and try new things, if it weren't for a friend I would've never even heard of this little treat of a place! Very small ice cream shop, they want you to order and leave! It is okay though, it might get more press if you could enjoy the entire atmosphere. The patrons are super friendly and regulars are happy to provide suggestions! Key lime pie is not a flavor I would normally choose but I was in the mood to try something different and I am glad I did- the pieces of Graham cracker pie crusts mixed in with the not too tart, not too sweet flavor of the key lime was delicious. Ok, I love Tara's. I used to be drawn by the hip decor (Curbside?) or cool show (Smitten) at ice cream shops but after being to more places than I can count, I've realized that Tara's has the best tasting ice cream, and it's organic. You know how sometimes when you go to an ice cream shop, the ice cream flavors are in vivid shades of green, purple, red, or blue? Well, that's probably food coloring. When you walk into Tara's, you'll notice that the ice cream flavors are not as colorful but they are more natural. The Ginger, Rosemary, Jasmine Green Tea, Lemongrass, and Vanilla all pretty much look the same but if you were to close your eyes and taste a flavor, you'd be able to identify clearly what it is. And that is beautiful. On this most recent visit, I had refreshing Ginger and Rosemary in a small cup. Excellent choices! Also, I prefer this location to the smaller one in Temescal since it's more spacious and there are more flavors. read more

Unfortunately when I went to Tara's, they didn't have any of the flavors so exalted on YELP. I tried sweet cream, walnut, and lavender. The lavender I had to throw out, because the flavor was too strong...definitely subpar to bi-rite's honey lavender. The sweet cream was subtle and a little boring My favorite of the three was probably the walnut. The first couple bites of the black sesame cone was good, but it also got a little too sweet at the end...I'm not sure whether I like Ici's better because the flavors I've had there are better, but I will definitely try Tara's again for different flavors. One of the best ice creams we've ever had. Definitely worth a visit. This place has interesting flavors from green chile to molasses and all of them surprisingly tasty. Thanks to a $10 for $20 Living Social deal I picked up several months ago, I managed to clear off another multi-year old bookmark today! The math worked out so that I was able to walk away with two pints of tasty ice cream without having to pay anything extra. While the indecisive part of me wanted to try many more flavors, the part of me that knows shame refused to hold up the line any more than four flavors - I was fortunate though, with two of the flavors being particularly standout: their Earl Grey (which tastes, unsurprisingly, a lot like milk tea), and Jasmine green tea (absolutely stellar, with very fragrant tea notes). Texture-wise, Tara's is a bit on the softer side (even more than Humphry) - personally, I prefer that my ice cream have a little more bite, but this didn't prove to be a deal breaker. For those who truly are indecisive, their selection of 16+ flavors, including both ice creams and sorbets in all sorts of unusual flavors (lemongrass, Chinese five spice, white pepper chocolate chip, etc), may prove daunting. Combined with the fact that they seem a little understaffed during peak hours, especially for the purposes of sampling, you may find coming during off-hours to be best. I'm a bit on the fence about the service, as I felt the staff came off a little unfriendly - in spite of actual appearances, there were still pretty accommodating, even filling up my mini cooler with ice so that my pints were able to survive what ended up being an hour drive back into the city. Also, for what you're getting, they're a bit on the pricier side of things (especially compared to their equals and superiors in the city), but I suspect what you're paying for is the organic surcharge. Do yourself a favor, find a few great flavors, and buy them in pints: you'll get a much better deal this way! ***Accessibility Info*** Venue - While I had no issues getting inside, the usual caveats about frozen dessert places still holds: with display cases being as high as they are, talking to staff and getting samples can prove to be a bit cumbersome and difficult. Wow, Tara's Organic Ice Cream is pretty busy and only one worker on a Friday night. It's okay though, it gives you more time to look at all the flavours and decide which ones you want. We had a Living Social deal to use - make sure you show it to them before you order (there's a sign saying you need to do that or else they won't accept it). Anyways, they have a lot of unique flavours that you don't see much which I am a fan of. The more variety, the better. For example, they had basil, orange rosemary sorbet and gingerbread to name a few off the top of of my head. Best part out of everything- the SESAME cones! SO friggin' GOOD. Make sure you get one! We each had a medium cone/cup ($5.60/$4.65) and tried a few different flavours (you can get up to 3 flavours with a medium): - I had walnut, azume and white pepper chocolate chip. The white pepper chocolate chip left my mouth a tad hot. I guess that's from the white pepper. Wasn't a bad hot or anything like that. The azume was good and the taste reminded me of red bean ice cream. Walnut was good as well - light and refreshing. - Gingerbread, coconut and cinnamon - gingerbread tasted exactly like gingerbread. Cinnamon was not as strong flavoured, very subtle. Same with the coconut from what I tasted. - Mango sorbet - my dad really liked it - Mango sorbet and coconut Not sure how Tara's compares to the other big name ice cream places in SF but the ice cream was good and I like how everything is organic/made without artificial flavours. I came here with my friend around 6, and we were so lucky to beat the rush. A few minutes after we came in the, the store was packed. At least 10 - 15 people came i after us. I tried a few flavors, I love that they use metal spoons for tasting! Very good for the environment. I ended up choosing the molasses, and turkish coffee flavor. Since moving back home to the bay, I've been going on a massive yelp searching food finding frenzy. So far, Tara's has been my absolute favorite in the ice cream department. It isn't so much the texture of the ice cream as it is a little on the icy side. The flavors are out of this world. Last night, I had genmaicha ice cream...just so happens to be my favorite tea. If you come here, you must order your scoop in a cone. They have different sizes which is perfect for my relatively small sweet tooth. You also have the option of a plain or sesame seed cone. The cones are delicious, fresh, and simply perfect. Parking can be a little difficult depending on the day and time...but so far, I've been fortunate to pick up a space within a 2 block radius. Ici Ice Cream was closed, so we stopped at Tara's Organic Ice Cream. They had free parking right in front of the store after 6 pm. I'm glad we stopped. They had a good variety of flavors. Taste testing was with a small metal spoon. They were out of the sesame cones which I really wanted to try. It wasn't a fancy store and the seating was limited. I ordered the Yerba Mate and Cardamom. Tea flavors are my favorite. My husband ordered the Coconut and Raspberry Agave Sorbet. We were able to try 2 flavors in one scoop of ice cream which was nice. Tara's offers good ice cream. Some of the best, but for a reason I can't quite pinpoint, my experience there wasn't as fulfilling as I would have liked. Perhaps it was the off decor, or perhaps it was the service. We went on a quiet, early Saturday afternoon and there was absolutely no wait. Generally, when we pass by, there is a short line, but I suppose we went on an odd day. The girl working there wasn't nearly as enthusiastic as those who work at Ici, or Cream, any other Ice Cream shop. We sampled a couple, and were saddened that they didn't have enough of the green tea. But that and the lavender were done very well. The texture of Tara's is heavier than Ici but much lighter than Fentons. They have unique flavors and I'd love to come back, or to their Telegraph location to try out more. read more

Came here after hearing some rave reviews from my friends. Love that this place is organic, uses a compostable cups, & has a lot of different flavors. However, my first impression of this place definitely was not that great. It was pretty empty, the table near the door was kind of dirty with crumbs everywhere, & the ice cream were all melted! Not sure why it was melting. I asked my friend if it's always like this but she said no. The flavors I tried didn't really wow me either (but maybe because they were all melting). I settled on their coffee ice cream in their baby cup for $2.45. I don't mind paying more for quality but this place just didn't live up to the hype for me. Oh my goodness, why had I waited this long to try out Tara's Organic Ice Cream? They are freaking delicious! The ice cream is silky smooth, bursting with flavors yet at the same time tastes fresh and pure. PURE! None of that artificial, way-too-sweet sugary crap. Unique and tempting flavors that would lure an otherwise traditional ice cream eater out of their comfort zone (my boyfriend being one of them). Camote - My boyfriend had dubbed this "sweetened chai" after his first spoonful. I was kind of disappointed that the sweet potato taste is nowhere to be found, but I love chai, so that's fine too. Lavender - It was love at first taste. Lightly sweetened with a floral scent that felt refreshing every single bite. Not at all artificial (which happens often to floral scented edibles). Pure heavenly. I would come back again and again for this. Earl Grey - It retained the "tea" taste minus the bitterness. Sweetness level is similar to the lavender flavor. My not-a-tea-person boyfriend said it was "unexpectedly good" (he winced and looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned that I wanted to try it). Jasmine Green Tea - I'm a green tea junkie. It tastes like how jasmine green tea should taste like. Fresh, floral, light. And since this is ice cream (aka milk), this should be more accurately called Jasmine Milk Tea. Strawberry Tarragon Sorbet - I can't describe this any better than the description on their website. It was "very flavorful" indeed - in the sense that it's very sweet (to me). And it does have an "unexpected finish", just that it's too short lived for me to describe it from the two spoonfuls that I had. It is interesting to note it starts sweet and ends on a sour note (tart if you didn't know what I mean). I would have deducted one star for the price, but the service alone deserves one star. Walking around the Rockridge area I decided to stop by Tara's after seeing it on Yelp. Upon entry I could quickly tell it was a neighborhood favorite for families; several mothers and their kiddies where there enjoying their ice cream. I perused the ice cream offerings- wow some of those are just exotic. I settled on ordering a small (a little bit more than 1 scoop, for $2.85) of Earl Grey from the cute girl working behind the counter. It was kinda pricey, but definitely worth it. I DREAM OF TARA'S ICE CREAM. my girlfriend is the dutchess of yelp checkins here. she and her husband go almost every night. i was sulking from my end of the state wishing i could try this amazing ice cream that they kept talking about. so i made a trip up to sf with this on my list. i knew i had to come and try tara's ice cream. W.O.W. this is not just ice cream. this is beyond words.. it's one of those foods that you just hold in your mouth, close your eyes and hope the moment lasts ... melting flavors and sweetness into pure belly bliss. I was a little shy at first -- i mean.. lemon edamame? wth? no way! ~~ but then i was totally blown away. talk about unique and crazy delicious flavors. i swear could just sit there all day eating samples and stuffing my face with their sesame cones. it was so hard to chose a flavor. i finally decided on lemon edamame and white pepper chocolate chip. Amazing ice cream. Simply the best in organic sweets. I've always enjoyed Tara's selection of unique flavors but I must say, I have fallen in love with their Tasmanian Honey. There is no way to describe the flavor of each specific ice cream flavor, only the feel of the ice cream. It is light, yet creamy with not a hint of ice chunks anywhere. Who eats ice cream in a cold night, but I guess there are people as crazy as we are as this place was crowded. This place has very unique flavors and this weekend, I got the Yerba mate and the toasted hazelnuts. The Yerba mate is a tea flavor and was very flavorful and the toasted hazelnuts was also yummy. Such a cool ice cream joint! Right in between ICI and Smittens. I did an ice cream hop and tried all 3! =P The cones here were the most memorable. Definitely worth paying a little bit extra for. =) The black sesame in the cones definitely changes the flavor in the cone and makes it worthwhile.
