You scream, I scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM! I hate to admit but this was not our first choice for ice cream. Originally we wanted to go to Ici Ice Cream, but it was closed for Halloween (boooo). But, it was meant to be as we wanted ice cream and were willing to walk the 15 minutes from Ici to get to here. And no regrets. They have a lot of unique and "spicy" flavors, like chocolate chipotle and white pepper chocolate chip. They also have very ethnic flavors, like garam masala. Their ice cream is fresh and just has that decadent creamy texture you want in a great ice cream that isn't icy. And the ice cream tastes like the foods and flavors that they say they are. I got 3 scoops for $5.40 of mango, strawberry agave, and white pepper chocolate chip and it was delicious. Yes I do wish the scoops were bigger, but that's because I'm greedy when it comes to ice cream. PARKING: Free 2 hour parking around the neighborhoods and does have a loading area for 15 minutes for you to run in and grab your ice cream. read more

By far the most delicious lavender sorbet I've tried. And I am definitely obsessed with trying all things lavender. My friend also tried their sun butter ice cream which was yummy too. Overall the ice cream shines and all the different and unique flavors look amazing. But something about this visit was extra special. The flavors are bold without being overpowering. They are rich but yet kiss your palette softly. OH MY GOSH -- SO GOOD! The avocado tastes just like a perfectly blended Vietnamese avocado shake (Sinh to Bo) -- my favorite on a hot day, or after pho. The coffee was definitely coffee but without the 'coffee headache' aftermath -- the bitter of the coffee did not compete with the sweetness of the ice cream. Flavor harmony. :) I'm surprised there isn't ever a line! My friends tried the basil ice cream after we finished our scoops and their faces lit up with amazement. So I've never actually been inside the shop. I've passed by several times on my way to another restaurant, and it always seemed packed on the inside. However, I was lucky enough to have a friend bring me some of their ice cream. He brought me a single scoop of the lavender ice cream, and let me tell you, it was delicious. I love all things lavender and usually pick the flavour if its available. Out of all the lavender ice cream I've had, I'm certain that Tara's has the best lavender ice cream anywhere. It's not so sweet that all you can taste is the sugar and not so flavourful that the lavender is overwhelming. It had a very earthy and luscious flavour that permeated and lingered in your mouth after you were done taking a bite. Sorry don't hate me. I could only bring myself to give Tara's 3 stars. I was so excited after reading comments about Tara's being "one of the best ice cream places in the area"! I came with my sister and mom, and after they kindly let us sample a lot of different flavors, my sister and I gave each other a look and knew that we were on the same page: we were going to walk away without getting anything. The 5 flavors we sampled were very milky and barely tasted like like their intended flavors. I was sad to walk away empty handed, as that almost NEVER happens! My mom did end up getting 1 scoop of Geranium and 1 scoop of Sweet Corn! Both were tasty and flavorful! Between SF and the East Bay, It seems like every few weeks I'm throwing up another 5 stars to an ice cream shop with innovative and delicious flavors and style! Guess what guys- Tara's Organic Ice Cream in Berkeley is a hit. According to Tara's Organic Ice Cream website, "Tara originated as a Hindu goddess, the Mother Creator, representing the eternal life force that fuels all life." If by fuel they mean Ice Cream, then yes- I agree. The ice cream they serve should be enough to keep the 'eternal life force' of thousands of Berkeley students pumping. I mean really- Orange Cashew? Who even does that? Who even THINKS about doing that as a flavor? It's delicious! So Delicious! A hands down 5 star flavor for me! And Turkish Coffee? Another delicious selections that is powerful and full of flavor. Like many 5 star Ice Cream shops- there will be a line and a short wait... Small cones are $3.60, Medium cones are 5.35. They serve other fine items here like smoothies and root beer floats. They also do cakes- and if you're a real fan, you can get it shipped to you across the country by ordering online... Amazing flavors - they can seem simple and pure at times but other flavors are complex and unusual. The flavors lingered on my palate for hours and hours. The flavors change a bit daily and so many of them appealed to me - but I didn't want to ask for too many samples. However, I was assisted by the very friendly Raciel who kept plying me with samples without being asked. Some of the flavors I saw include: * Pink peppercorn - Very different from anything I've had before, I wasn't sure if I would like it but I loved the combination of milky creaminess with the spicy pepper notes, a knockout * New Mexico green chile - just a tiny bit spicy with chunks of soft green chile - you definitely taste the green chile - very interesting * White pepper chocolate chip - tasted just like a high quality chocolate chip ice cream at first and then the white pepper hits you - subtle and sophisticated * Uly's sliced pumpkin - good, sweet pumpkin flavor but could use more pumpkin pie spices * Yerba santa - I wasn't sure what it was (a Mexican plant), it tasted like green tea at first and then like basil or mint? Excellent and complex. * Cardamom - deliciously strong cardamom flavor - if you like cardamom, you'll love it * Saffron - wow, I could see saffron strands, stronger saffron flavor than Ici's saffron vanilla, a must for saffron lovers * Vanilla - simple, pure, sweet with vanilla bean flecks * Adzuki black sesame - the black sesame wasn't too strong so that you could also taste the red bean - very nice with a rougher texture than the other flavors (whole red beans were used, not red bean paste) * Molasses - I thought I would like it but I guess I like molasses more when it's combined with other spices, as in gingerbread * Cinnamon - surprised I didn't try it since I normally love cinnamon ice cream but there were too many other flavors to try * Lavender * Kaffir lime * Egg nog * Sweet corn * Avocado * Peanut butter * Coconut * Raspberry * Green tea * Mango agave sorbet * Chocolate agave sorbet * Meyer lemon agave sorbet I JUST realized that I tried ten flavors during my single visit. Yikes! I must have tried half of the flavors they had that day. The texture is just right - firm (not airy), a little creamy. Every ice cream tastes very fresh. You can tell that it was made lovingly in small batches. So you can get the ice cream in a cup ($2 for tiny, $2.85 for small, $4 for medium) or cone with toppings (whipped cream, olive oil, etc.). They also had root beer floats and ice cream cakes. The cups and spoons are compostable. Tara's vs. Ici - I pick Tara for the spicier and more appealing flavors from around the world, along with greater variety. The shop is small and clean, with Ganesha statues and images. Over here in the East Bay, we have our own ice cream wars. I thought I was guilty of licking up Ici like Jonestown kool-aid, so I thought a visit to Tara's was in order for balance. I'd been a handful of times, and I always find her ice cream to my liking. I mean, what's not to like? It's as if my spice cabinet exploded in an ice creamery. Saffron, ginger, and cardamom too/No wonder there's often such a long queue. It's so Berkeley, even though Ici is technically more in the City of Berkeley. Cutsy handwritten ice cream listings, with Berkeleyan favorites such as agave everything, edamame lemon, allspice, berbere, garam masala, SPICES! Compostable wares to boot. I met a dog there named Ayatollah and a man with patchouli in his pocket. Enough said for the clientele. She really does make great ice cream. I think I've gotten the ginger each time, and it's phenomenal. Last time it had caramel in it ;) The strawberry balsamic is definitely not her most unique flavor, but she makes it so well and it pairs well with the ginger. I wish there was more seating, not that seating is common at any ice cream shop. There's a few chairs at a counter that is covered in flyers for Maum Meditiation and your local leukemia/lymphoma fundraiser. Sigh...even ice cream parlors can't keep reality at bay. It's true. I'll eat almost anything with lactose and lipids. My secret love affair with Wendy's Frosties and It's It ice cream sammies is one I will proudly reveal here. But in this world of abundant frozen dessert options, I will choose Tara's bizarro flavors over the classic treats any day. Thanks to Amy J, I was given the excuse to "crawl" between Tara's, Ici and Cream in the span of a couple hours. While I didn't make it to the warm cookie finish line, I was beyond happy with my first lap at Tara's. The strange, seasonal flavors perked up my palate and had me wishing I'd brought my extra stomach (or skipped breakfast). "Too much of a good thing" could easily be their slogan. There must have been 20 flavors to choose from, with the requisite vegan and gluten-free options too. I sampled about 6 flavors before settling on a combo of Turkish Coffee and Port & Fig. I appreciate that their flavors are intense, but not overly sweet so you're getting the real essence of whatever you're craving. Easy going and friendly staff, along with sesame cones and a 2-flavor allowance for your small cup makes for a 5-star recipe in my book. read more

Now this is what small batch ice cream should taste like! More than that, this is the sort of atmosphere a small batch ice cream parlor should have. It might not be as pristine and pretty as Ici, but it doesn't have the line. That's the magical part of Tara's... it doesn't have the line... I tried multiple ice cream flavors while I was there. With no line and so many inventive recipes at my disposal, why would I not try all the flavors imaginable? The servers were very friendly and helpful, obliging my various samples. I tried the rooibos tea flavor, the orange cardamon and the adzuki black sesame. The rooibos was obviously a red tea, but not overpowering. The creaminess of the ice cream made it seem like a solidified cup of tea. It was just about perfect. The orange cardamon was spicy but not overly strong, but my personal standout was the adzuki sesame. They had whole adzuki beans in the iced cream, so you had the texture and not pulverized anko in the ice cream. Also, the sesame flavor was not overpowering, but just added a perfect nuttiness to the flavor profile. The prices were reasonable for a small cup of ice cream (which is one or two flavors). The service is fast, the ice cream is particularly good quality and the flavors available are inventive and absolutely spot on. And, it's only 4 blocks off the beaten path that Ici inhabits. (hands me a spoonful) The people at Tara's might have zero clue about writing legible "g's", but they certainly know how to combine organic fruit, herbs, liquers, cream, egg yolks, sugar and love to make some mighty fine ice cream. Now this isn't just your standard vanilla, chocolate, rocky road and rainbow sherbet- type ice cream, this stuff is incredible! Try out complex flavors like: Cardamom, Epazote, Garam Masala, Kaffir or Stout with Fudge. Like I said, it's no Rite-Aid ice cream counter, this stuff is awesome! You can get your ice cream in a biodegradable medium cup, small cup or even smaller cup or lose the garbage altogether and get your sweet treat on a handmade ice cream cone with black sesame seeds. Wonderful, fun, and funky flavors. I sound like a greedy child, but I liked all the flavors I tried ~ Spiced Pumpkin, Strawberry Balsamic, Turkish Coffee, White Pepper Choco Chip, Tasmanian Honey, Raspberry Pear, Avocado, Lavender, Black Sesame, and Lemongrass (these last three are particularly enticing). Actually, I'm a greedy adult, so I want to try the Pink Peppercorn, Chile Pistachio, Carrot Cake, Saffron, and Garam Masala. Didn't think anything could beat Ici in town, but Tara's got more flavors and feels more down to earth. You can feed your ice cream greed by buying pints to eat from the comfort of your home and away from prying eyes. Super nice customer service lots and lots of flavors unlike the few offerings at Ici (but I do think I like Ici's ice cream better). The day I stopped by, I tried banana( love banana ice cream) and the candy cane. The banana was delicious and nicely balanced but the candy cane was a little too mild in flavor for my taste. I know this was a strange combination, but it was what sounded good to me at the time! The ice cream is very rich and I am not sure how anyone could eat more than just a small but then again, I could be wrong! read more

This place is amazing the flavors and the cones are so good! I would recommend this place I've been there over a dozen times. The reason for my low stars is because when I went today my partner and I felt so cheated! The portion was so small in our medium size that it didnt fill my cup nor was his ice cream over his cone. I don't know if it was just the staff that didn't want to run out or what was the reason for this. The other time are portions aren't the best but they make sense. There's something about having some good ice cream outside in the rain. Reminds me of my days as a kid taking refuge from the storm inside a Thrifty store, and the only thing I could afford was a 50 cent ice cream cone. Well, Tara's isn't getting 4 stars because of some sappy memories of mine. It's just real high quality ice cream, with some real interesting flavors. Bless that dear, sweet young lady's heart who knows me (as an ice cream shop stalker, yes) and introduced me to the 'new flavors' of the day (seeing that I go there multiple times during the week), and Tara for actually making the flavor appear in the case. Today they had three new flavors, but the clouds parted for one in particular which I've never heard of, but instantly knew I would like just from hearing the name: banofee pie. She told me about the cilantro where I had to control my psycho-somatic gag convulsions, and tried to politely tell her I would never touch the stuff (but it was a pretty hue), so she quickly moved on to the other two. Caramelized pear sounded interesting just because anything caramelized is a win in my book! Then she told me about the banofee pie. Are you ready for this? She said, "it's like a banana cream pie, with caramelized (there's that word again!) sweetended condensed milk ribbons and pie crust in it". I had to lean on the case to steady myself. "ok, I'll sample the caramelized pear first, then the banofee pie." Why did I even bother, when I KNEW I was going to get both of them? Because I am a big fat pig, that's why. Sure enough, after re-trying the berbere (interesting, still not quite ready for a full scoop yet) and avocado (still working on this one too, it has gotten smoother though), I ended up getting the new flavors plus walnut. Yeah... you know you're an alcoholic when the bartender knows you by name and what you like to drink... well here at Tara's it's quite similar for me. I appreciate creameries that offer Asian flavor profiles, which is why I was so excited to try black sesame ice cream from Tara's. I've been once and I'll probably never return, especially with Ici nearby. I really hate calling out businesses like this, but I am a strong advocate for food safety. I tried contacting Tara's directly but received no response. Though the ice cream was pretty good (I tried black sesame and the cookies and cream) I was horrified by the relaxed hygiene standards I witnessed during my visit. The store had a very long line so I could tell that the workers were flustered and rushing. I watched as one woman repeatedly had ice cream fall out of her ice cream scoop and she would nudge it into the container with her hands. The young man who filled my pint had long, dirty looking hair and was struggling to fill one of my pints because the ice cream wasn't very soft. He was basically putting his whole body into digging for my ice cream, and as his head was almost resting on the counter and I saw his hair go in and out of my pint of ice cream. I informed him that his hair had repeatedly touched my ice cream and all he said was "oops" and give me a little smile. I was horrified and disgusted. I didn't want to make a scene in front of all those people by insisting on him starting over when he was already struggling to scoop the hardened ice cream into my pint, so I just threw it away when I got home and enjoyed the other pint I bought that afternoon. I still encourage people to try this place out, but I wanted to give a warning and hopefully encourage more stringent hygienic practices. read more

Considering all the rave reviews, maybe my expectations were too high. Tara's has great customer service; the woman at the counter was patient, helpful, and friendly. The fact that it's all organic is awesome. But perhaps I like my ice cream a little creamier, and a little sweeter. The offbeat flavors are cool but I found out there were not really my style once I tried them. So when I opted for mint chip, figuring there would be no need to taste test, I was a little disappointed. It was OK, but it tasted like there was ZERO mint. With a name like mint chip, I thought it would have at least a hint of mint flavor. Weird. My boyfriend got strawberry rose, and that one was pretty good. Overall, I'd probably give Tara's another shot if I'm super close by or with a group that wants to go. Otherwise, my ice cream cravings lie elsewhere so far. read more

The flavors here are quirky, unique, and should be a member of the UN as it stretches across cultures and nations throughout the world. Orange cardamom, pink peppercorn, mayan chocolate, tasmanian honey, adzuki black sesame, VANILLA?! That is world peace served on a waffle cone. On my last visit, I tasted the sweet corn ice cream - it was just too tempting. And yes, it tasted like corn :). I ended up choosing fudge cherry and it was so light, but the flavor was SO rich mmm! I love that it's still sweet but not too sweet or heavy. And most notably, I really wanted black sesame and there was an empty bin of it left. The man behind the counter scooped up all the sides and made an almost-full ice cream scoop out of it - on the house. What a sweet man! It was worth the scrapings, Tara serves up the best black sesame ice cream I have ever had. EVER. Topped on a black sesame cone - mmmmmm! The ice cream here is so light but both icy/creamy and absolutely delicious! I really love how it's creamy but doesn't get too melty. You don't feel full or heavy or guilty after you've eaten some, it's the perfect treat. Pair the ice cream with super-friendly service, and you are off to a great day. I'm a big fan of ice cream. :-) Whenever I find a new brand or shop, I like to perform my own little quality/flavor test by ordering plain vanilla. Often times the vanilla is good, but rarely is it great. Tara's vanilla was fabulous! As a result, I've frequented Tara's many nights and tried several of their other delicious flavors, my favorite being the Mexican Chocolate. The ice cream is very sweet and fragrant. Tasmanian Honey - A nice tart sweetness of honey. Makes me wonder what kind of flowers bees pollinate in Tasmania. Avocado - I was going out on a limb with this flavor. Immediately I thought guacamole and mushy texture. Eating it, I remember now that avocado is a fruit that is smooth and subtle in flavor. Pretty disappointing :( Was craving ice cream on a day where Ici happened to be closed and Yelped the nearest next best thing. After sampling a few flavors we decided to get lavender and jasmine green tea on a cone. The ice cream consistency was more on the runny side and the green tea had a bitter aftertaste. It's more of a 4.5, because there is only one worker so it took a little wait. Now onto the ice cream! I took the kids on Saturday to try it out. We had: White pepper chocolate chip: Nice mellow spice when it hits your tongue, but then BAM! The pepper hits you. Very interesting, but my niece couldn't finish her scoop. Cinnamon: you can definitely taste the cinnamon, with a hint of sweetness. It went well with the Rooibos. Rooibos: I love Rooibos tea, so this was delicious. It's almost like a Thai Tea. Strawberry: Little specks of strawberries. Tasted fresh and creamy. Vanilla: The nephew wanted "white ice cream", lol. There was a small container so he was in luck. I prefer to see the tiny vanilla beans, but obviously my nephew didn't care. He liked it. Burnt Caramel: I must say it comes close to Bi-Rites salted caramel, but Bi-Rite edges them out. Wait, was that Tara? :) I came here not once but twice this week from my after school snack (yes, teacher are in more need of snacks!). Flavors tried included: 1. Chocolate tarragon - very, very good. The herb comes very strongly and compliments the chocolate. Better than chocolate mint combo. 2. Truffle pear - Very subtle. Not as much contrast with the chocolate tarragon. 3. Rooibos tea - Mild. Not as strong as the Earl Grey flavor from Bi-Rite or Ici. Though note that it's a different kind of tea 4. Lavender - Very mild here. I would like more of a pugent flavor to this. Something like one Hokkaido lavender soft serve I had in Japan last year. Very consistent and with lots of flavors to choose from. The only complaint is the pricing. It seem a bit much ($4.75) for two scoops medium bowl, no?
