Our food was delicious & made to our specifications. I had ordered my favorite samosas, which were delivered about 2 mins after we got our drinks & sat down. I really love Tarka. They are the sister restaurant to the Old Austin Clay Pit downtown. I will say that this is in a strip mall, so takeout is my favorite way to go. That said, they did a phenomenal job at making it seems as if you are NOT sitting in a strip mall. We like the saag paneer and the lamb korma best, and their naan is great. I will say that their portion sizes are quite small compared to other Indian restaurants...but we like this all the more because it makes it less expensive. read more

I love Indian food and I really feel like I've been missing out because I never had it until I was invited to the Clay Pit by a friend. I felt lost and didn't know what to order, but thankfully, with friends to guide me, I discovered several dishes and fell in love. Now, I'm not always willing to drive downtown from my home in the 'burbs, so thankfully, there is Tarka and I can have my needs met a lot closer to home. Today, I was craving korma, specifically chicken korma and some naan. My daughter had my usual standby, tikka masala. Both were good, spiced to order, we take our Indian food medium, thank you very much. The restaurant was clean, until a family of grown ups who apparently eat like toddlers left, but the friendly staff cleaned up their mess quickly and the restaurant returned to its tidy state again. The combo kabob plate was good but a little too bland, the tamarind yogurt chutney sauce is just what the doc ordered for this dish. My wife had the chicken tika masala, it was good but some of the pieces of chicken were too chewy for her. We shared all of this including a garlic naan, this was not their best effort as the bread was too crispy...naan for us should be very soft and fluffy, this does not stack up very well against Teji's and Suvai. We like to turn their hot chai tea into iced tea, add some sweetener and you have something great. For a fast food Indian restaurant, the food is so good. Is it the best Indian food, no. The price, quickness, and flavor make it worth going to. Being in the area, I was excited to order my lunch here. Only one person in front of me so it gave me time to decide. Of course, I ordered the vegetable samosas, they are my favorites. Chicken Tikka Masala mild, and a gulab jaman for dessert. A short wait and my food was handed to me. I couldn't wait to get home and eat. The samosas were crispy and filled with spiced potatoes and peas. I hardly even use the dipping sauce but it was good. The potatoes looked brownish because of the amount of spices mixed in. All I could think while eating these is I don't have to share them. I savored both samosas. This is where I have to give credit for the way they pack to go orders. It is nice to see the seasoned rice and Chicken packed separately. I hate places where they put the sauced meats on top of the rice. The chicken was so moist and tender and sauce had just a hint of heat. I may try it medium heat next time. Finished only half of it, so I got to have it again for dinner. Oh, the Gulab Jaman. Wow what a difference a few years can make. I used to eat here quite regularly when they opened. I moved away in 2015 and just came back to the area, and this place is now completely disgusting. Filthy floors and bathroom. The tables and chairs look like they've never been replaced. If you are seeking approachable Indian food you can't beat Tarka! The prices are reasonable, it's fast, the menu is thorough! The dishes are so very tasty! It's very very take-out friendly! The menu is easy to read and understand - which in my book is an essential detail! Vegetarian and nut containing items are very clearly marked on the menu. 3.5 stars. Great dining option for a box store shopping location. Tarka is a fast casual restaurant that seems more Americanized than some of the traditional Indian restaurants I've been to. I dined here tonight on a Groupon with the lowest of expectations (it is next to IKEA) and was pleasantly surprised. The children's kabob entree was huge, with large chunks of chicken, grilled vegetabables and rice. We also ordered the Mirch Masala, Channa masala, and lamb vindaloo. The vindaloo was our least favorite. The tomatoes were too bright in the dish. It was very different from the other vindaloos I've had. The chicken mirch and channa masala were very good. I didnt even miss the meat in the channa masala. The rice was cooked perfectly, fluffy, buttery, and aromatic. The nan is nice and chewy. We asked for extra spicy dishes and they delivered! Portions are pretty large for the price. Also, they serve beer. So, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but if I'm in the area, I'll definitely come here. read more

I had never eaten indian food, so I was a little scared when some co-workers suggested Tarka. First, this place was nice and clean and the menu set up made it very easy for a first timer lime myself to order. I ordered a very spicy lamb dish with some garlic naan and I have to say it was really tasty. The flavors and spices were intense and I found myself wipping the sweat from my bald head. I ordered online and went in to pick up. My husband and I have eaten here before and enjoyed the food. My order was ready when got there. We ate the food later that day for dinner, and it was all delicious, with generous portions. I really appreciate the menu having options marked clearly. I have celiac disease and must avoid gluten or I'll get very sick. The menu clearly shows what I can safely order. Many restaurants still don't do this, and it's a hassle when they don't. My husband also sometimes wants a vegetarian option, and it was easy for him to order too. We will definitely be ordering from here or dining here again. read more

Definitely not the most "authentic" Indian food we've ever had, but it was flavorful (albeit a bit on the salty side) and perfect portions for us. So we ordered to go and I somehow ordered at an Austin location off the website a cousin sent me instead of the Round Rock location he was picking food up from !! Luckily the restaurant made my order quickly and it was tasty I had the VEGETABLE PAKORAS they were delicious and the chutney was tasty, these were good as well but kind of bland the VEGETABLE SAMOSAS, I also ate the shrimp BIRYANIS I added some soy sauce to this to make it more flavorful the food was delicious and I'm glad they were able to figure out where my order was !!! read more

Sadly never actually in India, where they just call it food of course. With all of that as preface Tarka offered me a different type of dining experience. Rather than sitting down & ordering from a waiter or helping yourself to a buffet style dinning you order at the counter like you would at any other number of restaurants. They give you a number & bring your food out to you. We started with something I hadn't tried before, some chicken pakoras served with a mint-tamarind-yogurt chutney. It was great. Fried just enough, but not too much with a great breading. Throw in some garlic naan & we were ready for the main course. We had the chicken tika masala & the lamp vindaloo. Both were great. Served with a heaping bowl of basmati rice it hit the spot. Filling but not too heavy. Best of all it left me wanting to visit again and try something else on the menu. Tarka is like Indian fast food. Atmosphere is very casual. Food is fine, but reasonably priced. It's not the best, and once again the Malai Kofta was over salted, but at least it was edible this trip. One of the koftas was actually burnt and very dark, while the others were done perfectly. Ordered through DoorDash during covid-19. My food came very well packaged and it tasted amazing. While the price was a little on the pricier aspect, it did the job of satisfying my Indian cuisine cravings. The naan was plain but I think it may be from the drive.
