Another solid Vietnamese restaurant in Round Rock. I ordered the vermicelli bowl with grilled pork, shredded pork skin, and egg rolls. This dish was delicious. The egg roll was really tasty and crispy. Grilled pork was savory and shredded pork skin was perfection. You can't go wrong with this meal. I also tried their rice cake pancake as an appetizer but honestly, they is also another meal in itself. It will pair well with rice. Good if you enjoy eggs and rice cakes. Hung Ky is probably the best sit down Vietnamese restaurant in the Austin area but they get four stars because the portions could be bigger (especially given their location). The Bo Luc Lac Shaken Steak was solid. The Thit Kho Trung Vietnamese Braised Pork Belly and Egg was deliciousss. I would absolutely come back just for this dish. The pork belly was tender and not too sweet. I also appreciated that Hung Ky wasn't too heavy handed with the fish sauce. The Muc Rang Muoi Squid Seasoned with Salted Pepper had a good flavor but the batter was a bit thick and not "crispy". I've had better elsewhere so probably wouldn't order this again here at Hung Ky. The extra perk was that they open up early and offer an all day menu. They also offer a lunch special menu and live seafood in a tank at market prices. I hate to give a negative review but I must warn you. I am gluten free not by choice and I was doing research as I was craving Asian food. I came across Hung Ky Asian Kitchen and read the reviews on here and was very excited as I came across some stating the restaurant is knowledgable and can offer gluten free items....although when I asked them about it, they said everything basically has flour and even told me the rice noddles were not gluten free soooooo that quickly told me they didn't quite know too much on gluten free items. Maybe when others went, there was another person that knew more, but please be cautious maybe give them a call before and not go excitedly like me. read more

I've been seeing a lot of hype recently for Hung Ky so decided to give it a try since we were in the area and wanted to eat at a restaurant we haven't tried before. We came right around when they opened so service was pretty decent and the food came out pretty quickly as typical for a Vietnamese restaurant. The food is alright but I've had better. It's definitely authentic but I feel like it just doesn't pack a powerful punch in terms of flavor. I ordered the Grilled Pork Chop Rice and was pretty underwhelmed by the meat to rice ratio. The pieces of meat were so small and sadly not a whole lot either. I did like the broth it came with though. I also tried their bun bo hue. Secretly, I was hoping it would be as good as a different Vietnamese restaurant I go to in Austin specifically for BBH so that I don't need to drive as far for to satiate my BBH cravings but sadly it was not comparable. Had high hopes for this Vietnamese restaurant but left highly disappointed. The menu (several pages long) offers so many options to choose from that it could be overwhelming for some folks. One dish/appetizer that is rare to come by in Austin is banh bot chien and I felt like theirs has potential to be great if it was less eggy and more crispy. I've been searching high and low for a delicious hu tieu combo and I wasn't impressed with the one they served me. The sliced pork had a strong unpleasant aroma as well as the shrimp. The fried pork fat and fried shallots should have given the dish that "umami" flavor but instead tasted like it was fried in old oil. I felt underwhelmed eating this dish and could barely eat half of it. My friend ordered the bun bo xao and didn't like it at all. She said the high amounts of sliced bell peppers (which traditionally is not found in Vietnamese cooking) over powered the entire dish. read more

It's a 10 months since I've been to Hung Ky and I was pleasantly surprise to see they had added more dishes to their menu. The service was great and once you order the food came out pretty fast. For their lunch special they no longer do the $10.99 for pho. That was a lunch special they did when they first opened. Their lunch special is only for Chinese food but by reading the menu I don't think it's $10.99 either. I was happy to see they had tables filled for lunch rush. I got there around 12:30pm on a Monday and most tables were filled. I ordered: * Bun Bo Hue: 3/5 the broth was missing something. I am not sure if they used the pho broth as the base for the BBH but I could not taste the lemongrass in the soup. The meat toppings were on point with the pork knuckle, 1 square of pork blood (it was over cooked and hard in texture), and the meat was a bit chewy. I asked for shrimp paste on the side because it needed something to make it taste like BBH. Noodles were cooked good. I just wish there were more noodles in the bowl. * pork and shrimp eggrolls: 1/5 All you can taste is taro stuffed Eggrolls. I could not taste the pork or shrimp at all which is a bit of a let down. It was more taro filled. * salted fish chicken fried rice: 3/5 I appreciated it was not super oily fried rice. I felt the salted fish was behind the back wheel which I wish it was the front driver. I did ask the waitress is the salted fish amount a decent amount. She said they put a little bit. I told her I like the salted fish to be strong in the rice. She smiled and placed the order. Chicken was juicy and wasn't dry. When you reheat the dish the chicken does come out dry. I notice the lobster tank was empty and there were mostly just crabs in the live tank. I was hoping to order the tamarind lobster but they were out. Do I recommend this place? Even though the items I ordered didn't work out I felt the service was great. I still recommend Hung Ký. Hung Ky is a more family style type of Vietnamese restaurant that seems to have a big focus on seafood. That being said, we didn't get any seafood. We got pork spring rolls and pho--none of it was bad, but none of it was great. The herbs that came with the pho were a bit limp and wilted. The pho broth tasted a bit off for me. Service was fine; it's a bit slower than your usual pho restaurants. All in all, if you want the basics like pho, vermicelli, and spring rolls, i'd go elsewhere. Decided to come here for lunch on the weekend. The restaurant barely just opened, so there was only one other table of customers there besides my group. We ordered 3 items off the menu: the Pho, Com Tam (C6), and Banh Bot Chien (A10). The rice platter was good. I do like that they have the shredded pork skin and the egg pork cake since most places in Austin don't have that from what I have noticed so far. The egg cake was a bit on the smaller side than what I am used to in Houston though. The Pho was good, flavorful, and had just enough fat in the broth. The Banh Bot Chien was okay, with most egg than the rice cake itself. Also, the sauce was like a dark sweet and sour sauce, which was weird to me as all other places it is a soy sauce-based sauce. The small feedback I have is that the food came out very slowly. Not sure if it was because they just opened, but we finished the Pho and the rice platter before the appetizer came out. The restaurant itself is a decent size. It had the Asian vibe for sure. Not too fancy but not too run down on the inside. I also read online on their Facebook that they do lunch specials. I've been around eight months now. I've only been to a few Chinese restaurant. I found this one on yelp. I went in and it was wonderful. I had a modified beef and broccoli. I asked for three out of four on the spicy and it was awesome. Had a chicken egg roll for an appetizer. A Diet Coke. 21 bucks. Great deal the beef was really good quality in the beef and broccoli. A surprisingly superior Vietnamese restaurant. * * * I had never heard of this place. But a lot of Vietnamese families have. On the Fourth of July there were multiple large parties of extended Vietnamese families who had picked Hung Ky as the place they wanted to have their holiday celebration. I don't see that at the other Vietnamese establishments I frequent. The families were ordering all sorts of things. A common theme was that one of the items was generally a large platter of mixed seafood. Different tables had different platters. There is a house specialty which is live lobster and live crab prepared in some Vietnamese fashion. I suspect this is the most expensive item on the menu. Only one table took management up on the top-of-the-line blue ribbon item. But the other seafood options looked intriguing. * * * I personally went for a lower tab item: In this case, a Vietnamese beef curry. Curry at most Vietnamese restaurants is a mediocre item - often one of the dullest things in the house. * * * Curry at Hung Ky is ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY OUTSTANDING. I was totally surprised and more than a little blown away. Now to be fair, one of their secrets, is they use American's favorite cheat. They work a little sugar into the Vietnamese curry. I would normally get all pious and rail against this. But in this case, the secret sugar ingredient is like an Italian grandmother's secret trick of sneaking a little sugar into her homemade traditional tomato sauce. Sugar brings out all of the flavor of the curry the way that it brings out all of the flavor of tomatoes. I gave them a personal medal for cooking cleverness - and chowed down my curry happily. It did not hurt that they put a very high quality of beef into their beef curry - and that the beef and the vegetables are beautifully cooked in their own right. It was an absolutely first rate plate of Vietnamese food. * * * One other note. The Vietnamese Iced Coffees here are absolutely positively massive. I am used to the metal cans you put on top of your coffee cup where you brew the coffee right in front of you. You then pour the coffee into a middle sized glass of ice. Nowadays, I think Vietnamese iced coffee is pre-made and made in bulk. Once again, I could pull out my Food Bible and start giving my sermon about the holy merits of traditional coffee brewing. Except this mass produced Vietnamese iced coffee is actually pretty good. More to the point, you get two to three times as much iced coffee as you typically get in an old school Vietnamese restaurant. So I was drinking and drinking and drinking my coffee ... And getting fuller and fuller and fuller and fuller And I couldn't figure out why there was so much Vietnamese iced coffee still in my glass. Then the fundamental nature of coffee reality became clear to me. I knew what I was drinking and why there was so much of it. * * * Samuel C lives by two fundamental principles: a) There is no such thing as too much food b) More is More. By these standards, Havana Harry's in Miami with its gargantuan servings is one of the finest food palaces in the universe. Knowing that for once in my life, I had more Vietnamese iced coffee than I could possibly drink brought a deep and fundamental sense of inner peace to my soul. * * * Should you come to Hung Ky's just to drink way too much Vietnamese iced coffee? I suppose you could do that. But those seafood platters look very large and very good. There are many many pleasures at Hung Ky. Figure out which pleasure you want to take to excess. read more

I stopped by last night to grab some food to go..... Let's go! Lobster fried rice Lobster fried rice has an amazing robust flavor. This lobster fried rice is made with lobster tails, jasmine rice, veggies, and a few other simple ingredients. The lobster is really designed to be the star of the show, but it gets a lot of help from all the flavors working with it in every bite. The lobster for the dish is a bit light on taste but as noted above the corn, onion and light spices make the dish work. In the future, I'd elect to purchase the crab fried rice as it may be sweeter in taste than the lobster. Salt and pepper shrimp The shrimp for this dish were tender. To achieve this tenderness, the shrimp must be marinated and after marinating, the shrimp are quickly blanched in hot oil until they are cooked through. This process forms a thin coating around the shrimp, sealing in moisture and preventing them from becoming tough or rubbery during further cooking in stir-fries or other dishes.The salt and pepper seasoning on the shrimp coupled with jalapenos, fresh carrot and onion took this dish up a notch. This is a new Vietnamese and Chinese restaurant that recently opened up, they also specialize in seafood. The chef here is connected to that Asian food trailer Com Tam Pa Phi off Dessau Rd. I came here a couple of weeks ago during their soft opening and had a phenomenal meal. The place is very clean, it's nestled in the strip mall right near I-35 and Hester's Crossing, behind Jack n The Box. I got there and wanted to try their Pho because the cook here said his Pho is made with lots of love. It did not disappoint. Out comes my Beef Short Rib Pho - wow! It was such a gorgeous dish! I had beef rib pho out near Lakeway area a few months ago, but this Beef Short Rib Pho was way better. The meat was tender, really good quality meat, and the broth was perfect. It had the right amount of seasonings, and great depth and flavor. I was so impressed with this dish and I highly recommend it. The quality is superb. They have a huge seafood tank there with these rare shrimp (from Houston) and crabs and lobster too. Those shrimp looked very exotic and appetizing. I watched them bring out a dish with fried garlic shrimp - looked and smelled so darn good! I am excited to try that next time around as one of the owners / managers there was telling me about how unique and delicate this dish was and how popular it is in the Houston area. I tried Hung Ky for the first time, following recommendations about its soft opening. The house was 80% full, and I was impressed by the large water tank containing live crabs, lobsters, and prawns. I ordered whole crab ($50) and shaking beef ($19). Although the shaking beef was decent, its flavor was unremarkable and dominated by Vietnamese fish sauce. The crab, however, was underwhelming - decent flavor, but nothing special. My primary concern was the portion size, which seemed inconsistent with the live crab's size, raising suspicions about missing meat and being overcharged for being sold for a whole crab. Will I return ? Most likely not. Do I recommend others to give them a try , yes but probably not the crab of you aim to bang your bucks or with high expectations of decency. ITS JUST ALRIGHT.
