They say that the third time around is a charm. NOT HERE! AVOID THIS PLACE!!! For any neighborhood establishment, I give them the benefit of the doubt three times before giving up on them. I want to see local small businesses do well and I want to support them. Tarpy Tailors - I've given up on you! I've been a customer of Tarpy Tailors for the last 11 years. NO MORE. The past owners have always been humble, welcoming and kind. The new owner (I think your name is Em) is arrogant, conceited, and seems to not want any more business other than the airline jobs that he gets automatically. Prices have gone up astronomically. My First Experience: I wanted to get two suits tailored. I went to Tarpy because I trust Fernando, the main tailor. I walked into the store (no one else was around) and I had to wait 2-3 minutes until the owner finished his personal phone call. After introducing myself, seeing that he was the new owner, I told him that I needed two suits tailored. He immediately told me that it was a two week wait and that he couldn't do it. He explained that he had a big airline order and couldn't work on my suits. I asked if Fernando was still working there, and he was! He came out from the back, took my measurements, and told me that my suits would be ready in a week. My Second Experience: I needed to get a raincoat tailored. I walked in and the owner immediately told me that he didn't have time to work on my coat because he was busy. Again, I was given a 2 week turn around. I again asked for Fernando. I explained that I only needed the sleeves shortened 1". Fernando measured me and I pickedup my coat two days later. To hem a coat sleeve (since stitch, no fancy sewing - $34???!!!!!) My Third Experience: I walked into the shop today to get some pants hemmed. There was a flight attendant before me so I patiently waited for my turn. When it got to be my turn, I held up my pants and asked if he could do a simple hem. His response was, "There is no way that I can get your pants hemmed in one day!". My response was "I'm not asking for a one-day service." His response was, "Well, it will probably take a week / 7 days to hem your pants." At that point, I was just tooo tired to fight to become a customer of his. I turned around and walked out the door without saying anything. He then proceeded to tell me to wait and come back. I continued to walk away. NEVER AGAIN! Fernando - save your professional career and find another place to work. You are a talented tailor. You are too good for the new owners of Tarpy. Please contact me if you ever leave, as I'll follow you. I *rarely* ever claim this EVER - but I think that my skin color isn't welcomed here at Tarpy Tailors. I'm Hawaiian and have dark skin, but it may not be dark enough. Take a look at MANY one-star reviews that this place has gotten since the store was sold. I tried three times. We call them Crapy Tailors with my coworkers. Everyone had a bad experience with them but unfortunately our company uses them for work uniforms, so we had to go there. I started to do sawing myself. There are many Youtube videos on it. Newer sawing machines have a hem handle. I left my uniform dress to get hemmed on 9/30/19 they said they were so busy it would take over 10 days. I agreed, I just picked it up today 9/30 and they handed it to me completely wrinkled. I looked at Ken and said are you kidding me, you hand me this dress looking like that after charging be $25.00, after it was told to me that it would be hemmed and pressed. The owner just looked disinterested and said it did not show on the receipt to be pressed, he could have cared less. He begrudgingly took it in the back to be pressed, after waiting 20min he brought it out still wrinkled. I just looked at him and said I will do it myself. Being in customer service with a major airline, I would have never done that to a paying customer. I was so disappointed in this place after all the good reviews. The best place...bar none...in the area to get alterations done. Unlike the chaotic atmosphere of the alteration places tucked away as an afterthought in the corner of cleaners, the atmosphere at Tarpys is calm and welcoming. Run, don't walk away from this place. They don't do personal tailoring anymore, though had things of mine for over 9 months without completing any work on them, Then they stopped doing personal items in November. I made countless trips, and tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. Brooke kept saying in her emails, this was so long ago! They were never opened on the hours that are online, didn't bother to change it. I also took uniform items. My first two shirts had sleeves hemmed for $15.00 The last two, which I never received back, the charge was $20. A new shirt cost $25. On everything uniform related, they took so long to do that I wasn't able to be reimbursed. The "gentleman " who works the counter is extremely rude and condescending. This tailor was recommended on the AA flight attendant web page, I think by someone that is related to the owner. Unbelievable poor customer service. Take your business elsewhere. read more

I took in a $100 pair of jeans to get hemmed last week. Whenever I get jeans hemmed I request to "keep the original hem" so that the distressed look that came with the original hem transfers over, keeping the jeans looking sharp. When I dropped the jeans off I specifically asked about this no less than three times: "please keep the original hem"... "you're going to keep the original hem, right?"... "sorry to mention it again but I just want to confirm you're going to keep the original hem, it's important...". Sounds redundant but just wanted to make sure we were on the same page because I was excited about the new jeans. The tall gentleman with the hat said "yep, no problem". I left the shop excited to get my new jeans back in a couple days. When I went to pick them up, I instantly noticed they did NOT keep the original hem and calmly mentioned it to the same guy that helped me the week before. He said he had no idea what I was talking about and that what I was requesting was impossible. I said, "you guys have done it for me before". "No, not us, it's impossible and doesn't make any sense", and then he proceeded to make a sketch on a sticky note with some lines on it to explain to me how it would be impossible to do what I was asking. It was kind of obnoxious and a lot of attitude. At this point I realized the conversation was going nowhere so I paid the $10 bill and left. Went in this morning and I begged her to hem it before end of day and she delivered! For $8 my pants is exactly the length I need to give my sexy heels a peek! I had a fantastic experience getting my suit tailored at Tarpy's. I brought in an ill fitting suit Friday for a job interview on Thursday. The customer service was polite and the tailor was thorough. The guy at the counter was aware of modern suit trends (tapered pants legs, no pants cuffs) and even discussed the suit and tie I'd be wearing with the suit. The suit was ready for pickup Wednesday at noon. All in all, it was a great experience, and one I'd certainly repeat. They are quick, inexpensive, and amicable. Great local tailor across the street from LAX and clearly frequented by pilots b/c of all the pilot merchandise in the store. For me, though, the draw is the service and their work, both of which are stellar. Whether I need something hemmed or a tear repaired, Tarpy Tailors does it quickly, affordably and perfectly. My academic gown needed a new zipper installed --- evidently a very nasty job. Another tailor was going to take a shot at it, but then begged off. Well, my wife suggested Tarpy's and I am happy she did. Rolando went at it and did a fabulous job. My gown now has a far superior zipper to the one it came with, installed very securely. Airline crews... Do not go here. They have a limited supply and the customer service is awful. Have been going here for years when I run out of uniform shirts. The shirts they carry are awful. I finally had it, tried one of my shirts on that I had purchased. It looked like I was wearing a parachute. I took it back, with receipt and the "owner" who is always rude and put off when I walk in said "where's the plastic wrapping for the shirt! This is a problem!" I know his m.o., it's not worth arguing with him. My time is worth more. I walked out. Have no idea how there still in business. Terrible experience. First, no one ever answers the phone. A return call within a week is the norm. Ordered an airline uniform and 2 pairs of pants. Asked to be called when alterations were done so that I could stop by and check fit. Everything showed up in a box on my doorstep 2 months later with NONE of the alterations completed and no phone call. Returned everything, in person, for correction. Another 2 months later, no uniform, no phone call...nothing. Next call was to my credit card company to contest the charge. Very disappointed because I've been a customer of this company for over 20 years. Evidently, they just don't care. read more

Not great. Not terrible. This is slightly my mistake, because I feel like they mostly sew and alter uniforms (airline and airport uniforms, from the looks of things) and one of the items I needed altered was a tuxedo. They also made a mess of two sport coats I brought in. Nothing that couldn't be undone mind you (the jackets weren't "ruined"), but not anything I'd feel comfortable wearing to a nice event either. To be fair, they did a fine job on the khakis I needed patched. But if you have formalwear in need of alterations, I wouldn't bring it here. read more

When I showed up, she recognized I had called earlier in the day about a hole in a sweater, and took the garment in a back and fixed it while I waited! I didn't expect such a quick turnaround and that was great. She even tried to waive a charge, saying it was a very minor repair. Wow. And last but not the least.. communication is smooth. I hate to sound non-PC, but I do sometimes experience difficulty communicating with merchants who are non native speakers, and not knowing if they fully understood my needs can be a bit scary. I don't get many items tailored. But a friend referred me to Tarpy Tailors. They do high volume alterations for the airliners so I knew they could be trusted. This establishment is a sorry excuse for a pilot store. They carry only the smallest inventory of shirts in stock and are consistently out of the size and brand of pilot shirts I purchase. (Both common.) In this day and age of online commerce, I would love to patronize a local brick and mortar business. But I will never do business with these folks again. I came to Tarpy at the advice of my usual tailor, who was not able to do the complicated repiping/re-edging of a dress jacket I needed done. The good folks at Tarpy acknowledged that the job would be tedious, and that finding the right piping would be a challenge, but they were up to it. Rolando made numerous trips downtown looking for the right fabric for the piping and, once it was found, did an absolutely perfect job. Without Tarpy's help, this jacket would have been unwearable, because the piping was in such disrepair. I heard about Tarpy Tailors through a friend. I live in Venice Ca and have gone through a couple tailors after not being satisfied with the outcome. A couple months ago I dropped off a pair of Jeans that I had just bought that needed the waist line taken down, I am on the shorter side so they went up too high and we're not comfortable at all! Anyway I absolutely love the jeans and wear them all the time! Because of my last experience with Tarpy Tailors I took a dress in that needed some altering and again I am completely satisfied!
