My favorite season has arrived -- the Vancouver Croissant Crawl Festival! I visited Bread Affair in Granville island. What I got: Campfire S'Mores Croissant Dressed in a craqueline coat with a molten love affair of smoky chocolate and gooey vanilla bean marshmallow. Staff warmed up croissant, so, marshmallow and chocolate melted, it was such a guilty pleasure item. Very impactful! Dough was so crispy and buttery inside, Croissant , marshmallow and chocolate paired so well, I could not stop having it. Very delicious. After I had one, I was completely satisfied. Stopped to grab a Demi baguette to help with our cheese and meats from a couple of other public market local house. The bread was fresh crispy on the outside moist onion inside worked well with everything we put inside it. Great job. Service was very pleasant. read more

Such a cute bakery hidden in Granville island. We love it pick up pastries from here and walk around the island. Their sourdough bread is also really good. Everything is fresh and baked (you can smell the baked goods as you enter their store). We frequent here alot, this time we picked up the savoury ham crossiant and chocolate crossiant. The crossiants were quite big in size. The cookies are also really good, haven't tried a bad item yet here. read more

Tried the gougere as recommended and it was perfectly light and cheesy with a great thin crust on the outside, tender inside. They say they're organic but they aren't really. Their cornstarch (in their baking powder and powdered sugar) is conventional. That might not matter to you but I have an allergy to gmo corn products so it's a big deal to me. The Bread Affair was my first stop where I ordered a Gruyère cheese in and a chocolate chunk peanut butter cookie. Odd pairing but hey I'm on vacation. Freshly baked and delicious. I've been wanting to try this place since we pass it so often while walking around Granville Island. I got myself a ham and edam sandwich while mom got the brioche pizza and an all butter croissant. First off, the bread on my sandwich was incredibly fresh and tasted amazing. Super soft center while the crust was hard but I kind of like that! The actual sandwich was filling and tasty, and I think there was a normal amount of ham and cheese and lettuce but there was only one tomato which was a bit disappointing. The sandwich could have definitely used 2 slices so the tomato would actually fill the entire thing. But besides that I really enjoyed it! We got there around 10:30am and I just loved how fresh it tasted. Great way to start the day! I had a bite of mom's brioche pizza and it was good but nothing super special. It tasted like a cold piece of thin crust pizza. The croissant was huge and since mom had gotten a croissant from Terra Breads it was fun to compare the two. The croissant at A Bread Affair was definitely larger but when you open it up, it has less layers inside. The outer shell was crisper as well. The croissant from Terra Breads was smaller but it had many more layers when you ripped it in half. And the outside was also a bit softer. Also keep in mind we ate these in the evening, about 7 hours after buying them. I think what you'd prefer all comes down to personal preference. Mom and I felt like we enjoyed the croissant from Terra Breads just a little more, mostly because it had more layers to bite into. But the croissant here was still tasty! Overall I'm really glad we finally ate here. A fresh and filling option for food if you're walking around Granville Island. And I'd be curious to try a few other options here next time I'm in the area! read more

This was a cool pastry shop right in the heart of Granville Island Public Market. We went here last week as part of our family vacation. It was nice to run across this place as my older daughter and her husband were looking for a snack for my two granddaughters, and my younger daughter and I were looking for something to share as well. It was a very beautiful day outside. We just had a simple order. The man inside who served us was very nice at the front counter. We got a $2.00 bottle of water and a Pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant) warmed up. The pastry was so fresh and super tasty!!! While we were enjoying our snacks outside, a guy was in the courtyard singing. It was just a really good way to start out at Granville Island!!! A great spot for a quick bite before diving into the Granville Island Public Market. We stopped by and ordered the pistachio chocolate croissant and the ham & cheese croissant. Both croissants were packed with flavor and had a beautifully crispy, flaky crust. This place has a great location. It's near the water and there is outdoor seating in the area. There was live music playing right near the bakery. I didn't have any expectations for my sandwich. I bought it out of convenience. The staff was friendly. They announce your order from the window once it's ready. I had An Affair Club and some sort of homemade soda. The soda was refreshing and not super sweet. The sandwich... I still think about this sandwich. Every time I see a picture of it, I want another one. The focaccia was UNREAL. It was perfect-- fluffy, warm, and full of flavor. The meat and veggies on it tasted so fresh. It was a quality sandwich with quality ingredients. Absolutely amazing croissants! So buttery and moist with the perfect amount of flakiness. The service was very friendly and helpful! All the different flavors provide a great selection and the ones we tried were so delicious. They have the bakery section and then a counter that sells sandwiches and drinks. This bakery on Granville Island has an assortment of bread, pastries, and cookies with raunchy names that are puns of love/affairs. The cookies are all called "thicc." I got the pain au chocolat. The dough was fragrant and flavourful. However, there was very little chocolate inside, which I think is important. Still very good though. read more

Saw the cookies this bakery offered on social media and had to try it! They have a great location very close to the Granville Market Public Market and the vibe inside is super cute and cozy. Staff was friendly and very welcoming. My husband and I had just eaten lunch so the cookies were top of mind for dessert. We took home one Thicc Valrhona cookie (supposedly a spin on a chocolate chip cookie) and one Thicc Lava cookie (kind of like a lava cake in cookie form). Honestly both cookies were just okay and felt like something was missing. The Valrhona cookie barely had any chocolate chips and the batter was a bit lackluster. The Lava cookie was better with more chocolate flavor from chocolate in the middle (we ate it at home after warming it up for a bit) but it still felt like the batter was missing something. Both cookie batters felt like it was lacking in flavor depth, if that makes sense? Since I'm not local I'm not sure I would make the effort to return, but If I were in the area and I wanted some pastries I would consider visiting again and ordering something else. read more

A must visit boutique bakery while you are in Granville Island. They offer a wide variety of artisan bread, cookies, pastries and Sandwiches and their staff is so welcoming. I went with Thick Peanut Butter Awesomeness Butter cookie and Mandarin Orange Choco Scone. Peanut Butter cookie was a wholesome cookie with just the right amount of sugar (not too sweet)that you will enjoy every bite of it. Orange Mandarin scone is the best scone i have tasted in a while. Usually they are quite sweet but this freshly baked and delicious scone just melt in your mouth. Both the cookie and scone so good that i went back again to bakery for the same order. I discover there are 3 things I must order here -- house made ginger ale with sparkling water, maple bourbon butter tart and any of the cookies. The ginger ale is the best I have ever tasted. Forget those in a can. I can literally taste the ginger in this, with the slight gingery heat. The sparkling water (you can also choose still water) just makes it more refreshing, especially when the weather is warm. The cookies (I tried all 3 flavors) are the soft chewy kind. They remained soft the next day. It is hard to choose one as all are so delicious but if I can only get one, I will take the peanut butter. So good. The star item for me is the maple bourbon butter tart. The maple taste is not overpowering or sweet. The bourbon gives it a bit of kick. The filling is perfectly encased in the shortbread like crust which does not fall apart or crumble when bitten. Love the raisins in it too. It is a good accompaniment to unsweetened hot tea. I have tried some of the pastries but while nice, they are not wow. I prefer my croissants and kouign amann from other places. I will want to try the bread and sandwiches next time. It is a pity they do not sell coffee or tea here, so you have to go to other cafes in Granville island to have them with the baked goods. You can also find them at various farmer markets but the selection is more limited and mostly breads and pastries. read more

I visited this restaurant yesterday at 3:13 P.M. and it was not too loud inside. Also, the service was good when I was ordering and asking questions. We stopped by this cute place to grab some things for a lunch on the go and I'd say it's a good choice for that. The prices are reasonable, especially for an all-organic place. Staff members are friendly and the items came quickly without plastic packaging. In addition to desserts and breads, they have a selection of premise sandwiches they can warm up. They also put out samples of their delicious bread and scones! We shared a savory scone, the "better than sex" brownie, and the "world's best" grilled cheese. The brownie was closer to delivering on the promise than the grilled cheese. The grilled apple-smoked cheddar on an apple-y bread was delicious, but it was dripping with grease and oil when warmed up. The brownie, with hazelnuts, was so chocolatey and moist! The top is a thin layer of a perfect dark chocolate icing. The savory scone was also good but not jaw-dropping. I'd definitely recommend the brownie. I was walking around the island when the smell of fresh bread drew me to walk into their doors. I love almond croissants and the server recommended it so I had to try it. It was fresh out of the oven and the filling was just oozing with buttery almond goodness. The exterior was flakey while the inside was soft with a slight chew. This place pretty much blew my mind. I have to say, the food in Vancouver was slightly underwhelming overall. Crack is not something I see everyday in a bakery. Well, at A Bread Affair they have a Toffee cookie aka Crack. Of course, I had to try it. Yes, it was yummy.
