We came here a few times when we were in the neighborhood. It is disappointing to say that most of the times we came here, the food was not up to standard. We ordered the hot stone and it came out super burned and other times the food were really bland, no taste at all. Last time we ordered galbi and they forgot to put the raw jalapeños and garlic. New management maybe? After a long time of not going here, we've started coming again. What happened: my boyfriend and his friend just really wanted Korean fried chicken and didn't wanna travel far to get it so they decided to just go for it and see what happened. And it was good! They got the fried chicken and kimbap and it was all good. So the next time I was craving Korean and neither my boyfriend nor I wanted to cook, we walked over for dinner. We've now been back a few more times and it's def a go-to of sorts. That first time back, we got the budae jigae for 2 and the kimbap, as well as some makkeoli. Note: their makkeoli is "rice wine drink" - it's not the cloudy makkeoli that I expected. Probably gonna avoid that next time but they have soju and beer. So the food though! It was all the right flavor profiles and hit all the right notes. I described it to my boyfriend as like... Korean cafeteria food but in the best way possible. It's not like some super secret recipes from a Korean grandma but the food is GOOD, hot, and plentiful. It's really like a "bunshik" place, which in Korea can be used to describe places that serve large portions of food for low prices. Like the neighborhood joint that has a menu with alllllll the jigaes (stews) and kimbap and ddukbokki (rice cakes in sweet & spicy sauce), plus maybe jaeyook bokkeum (stir-fried pork) and bibimbap (rice bowl). I prefer to eat in rather than get delivery. The servers are always really nice and attentive. If you do get delivery, don't forget to add in the free side dishes. This place has been a miss for me for takeout three times in a row now. Wanted to give it some more time before I left this review. Used to really like this spot. My $18 kimchi jjigae had 0 pieces of meat and one piece of tofu in it :') they also have the kkochi rice cake skewers on their seamless menu and i have eaten them from here before in the past- but the last two times ive ordered it they say they don't have it so they should probably remove it from their menu. The tteokbokki i've had from them in the past is fine, a bit too mushy. Overall lacking, I'd go for Kuun instead. read more

Korean menu for the restaurant downstairs looked decent, but the cafe upstairs was a caffeine lifesaver when it was discovered that Urban Vintage isn't open on Saturdays. They were sadly tapped out on Balthazar pastries by mid-afternoon. Our iced chai and green tea lattes were reasonably tasty and not overly sweet, with the latter being a touch generous on matcha powder. I've been to Taste Korea 232 many times to escape from the hustle-and-bustle of Brooklyn[1]. The decor both upstairs (cafe) and down (the restaurant/bar[2]) works, and there's always a seat for me. Speaking of seats, there's so many chair styles it almost hurts my head - but it all fits together, somehow. Cafe staff are helpful and cheery. If I could change one thing about 232? Give them a credit card machine[3]. Usually I have enough cash to pick up a vanilla latte (mmmm; it's Stumptown, if you're a coffee snob), but not enough for, say, five. The restaurant[4] does the trick if you've got a hankering for Korean but don't want to leave Clinton Hill, or happen to find yourself there. [1] Obviously kidding here. I come here to get work done, but don't tell. Shh. [2] I might've asked them for a boozy coffee concoction on St. Patty's day. And they might've made one for me. So I ordered for take out and the wait for my food took incredibly long. I ordered the chicken bibambap, hot stone bulgogi bibambap, seollong tang, and kimchi stew. The chicken bibambap was bland and the chicken looked like boiled shredded chicken, so unappetizing. The hot stone bulgogi was decent, I appreciated they added the crispy rice on the bottom but it wasn't anything special. The seollong tang was bland and didn't taste like a true hearty bone broth, more watered down. Kimchi stew was super spicy and only included two pieces of pork belly. The whole meal came with one side dish, kimchi. The perk of having Korean is trying out all their different side dishes so this was very disappointing. So sorry, Jewish Mama, but I may have to say goodbye to chicken noodle and SHALOM to spicy Korean tofu soup!! I was fighting off a nasty chest cold when I came here and their tofu soup couldn't have been more comforting or delicious. The coffeeshop upstairs is just great for working in the afternoon--comfy, plenty of space, wi-fi, great coffee and ample outlets--but the Korean restaurant downstairs is the real gem. It's beautiful and atmospheric in a way that feels like an oasis from the city, and the staff is lovely. Most importantly, the food is outstanding. Just moved to this 'hood recently and Cafe 232 became a fast favorite. P.S. After several visits, I'm adding a quick note-to-self so I remember which dish I liked best from the rather large menu: Soondobu, prepared "less spicy" with crystal noodles added to the stew. read more

I am not Korean. I do not eat at a ton of Korean places. I've cooked Korean influenced dishes, but my chef basically invented that shit and I just lined it out. I have no idea what the fuck authentic means in terms of mid-level Korean eatery. Four stars because my meal was very tasty, not like wild and crazy tasty, but tasty. Four stars because the service was superb, the portions and presentation large and fun, and because if I had to guess what a fun, kinda goofy eatery in Korea where to look like, it would be a lot like this. This is the café upstairs from the 232 Korean restaurant (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/232-brooklyn). I have been going here on and off since 2013, and I really like it. They do excellent Stumptown coffees at reasonable prices (I recommend the cappucino), the space is wide and pleasant, there is decent wifi and they are cool with you sitting and working for hours. I have never seen it overcrowded, it's always pleasantly half-full. They have good fresh pastries and decent sandwiches, although the latter I find a little overpriced. The best thing though, is that you can order delicious and reasonably priced Korean food from the restaurant downstairs and have it served in the café. It's kept nice and clean and the bathroom is really good, too. I guess the only things preventing me from giving it a five-star rating are that the selection of snacks is somewhat limited and pricey, that they are cash-only, and that the second-hand industrial chic of the place means that some of the tables and chairs are, ahem, less than comfortable. The staff are super friendly. Always a cool artsy vibe as most of the clientele seem to be students from the nearby Pratt Institute. read more

Solid Korean place. Never set foot here but have placed delivery multiple times. Everything generally delivers well and I order stew from here all the time. Fried Mandu with meat - it always comes crispy!!! Places need to take a lesson from here. Tasty and crunchy. I like it with a side of sriracha. Yuk Gae Jang - also solid. I crave this sometimes and this is almost on par with some of the restaurants in Koreatown, Manhattan. Very filling. Spicy. Full of noodles, shredded beef, bracken fern (!!). I almost never finish the bowl in one sitting. Perfect for cold winter days, when you're sick or just want some damn soup. I think I'll try out the soondubu and dukbokki next time--maybe even set foot in the place ;). Highly recommend. read more

I've never written a Yelp review before. But I feel compelled to do it right now--maybe it's because 232 Taste is the first good Korean place I've found in Brooklyn. Maybe it's because my expectations were initially low from the negative reviews I read. Maybe it's because I'm hoping the staff comes across this review and gives me free food. In any case, it was a pleasant surprise. I tend to like my Korean food fairly salty and seasoned, to the point where you finish eating it and feel a need to brush your teeth. That's what I got when I ordered the daen jang jjigae. It was hot, authentic tasting, and perfect for the 30 degree weather. It did that thing where you get a rush of warmth that goes all the way down your stomach. I want to find out the man or woman responsible for cooking these dishes and appoint them my Korean mom/dad away from home. Hahah just kidding I'd need them back home too because my mom could never cook (love you, mom). This contradicts a lot of the reviews below me, so either my taste buds are wack, or they've stepped their game up. I'd like to think I'm a decent judge of Korean food, considering I've been Korean since birth and lived there during my high school years. The food came out quickly and it wasn't bland like a lot of people were claiming. I can't speak for their delivery, but it's probably not as good as it is in the restaurant. I kind of just accept that as a universal fact for more restaurants. Obviously this wasn't the best Korean food I've ever had, but of all the Korean options in Brooklyn, it made me feel for the first time like I was eating a home cooked meal from one of my friends' moms (remember, my Mom couldn't cook). And because of that, I think I'll be coming back here often. On a slightly unrelated note, I do wish that it was a little busier. With some more people and a little rowdiness, this could definitely carry the bustling atmosphere of a Korean sooljip on the weekends. 'Sooljip' directly translates into "alcohol house" and is the Korean version of a bar, where you can eat, drink, and yell at each other really loudly. But in the meantime, I'll be happy coming back here to get a nice, homecooked Korean meal every once in a while. read more

There are so many Friday nights where all I want to do is sit in bed & Netflix with my takeout (like a slob), and Taste Korea helps me do just that. I love the upstairs, and will continue to love it. That portion gets 5 starts because you can just sit there do work and order food if you get hungry. The 3 stars is for the downstairs restaurant portion. I always feel like this place is a hit or miss. How do you know when the service is probably going to go downhill? 1) They don't know who actually got a lunch special so they just randomly place the soups. 2) They don't know who orderd which lunch box even though someone ordered squid and the other orderd beef 3) When you asked for separate checks in the beginning and the guy comes over and says "since it's just cash only, it's going to be on the same check." He then LEAVES without geting an answer from anyone. Can you say, rude? 4) Two of you ask for change for a $20, and he comes back with 4 $10. You ask for smaller change, and he says he can't do it. So, you are running a restaurant without change for $10s? With the amount of people I see there each time I go, I don't think you're that ballin' Needless to say, I wish it was NOT customary for a group of 4 or larger to give a 20% tip because this waiter obviously did not deserve it. There was one other time when the waitress (only female waitress I've seen there) was really great and attentive. However, the clams were not cooked long enough in my seafood and tofu stew, and they did not open. I should remind myself to not get seafood from this place. Just a review of the upstairs cafe. Why do I love cafe 232? Because it's the best place in the area to go to get some work done. I don't know why but whenever I go it's always moderately empty, but not in a bad way. There seem to be tons of people who pick up there coffee fix and head out but not too many people who stay to enjoy there drinks. Not complaining cause there are always seats available and you never feel pressured to leave. A very great thing that should be highlighted is that they have cold brew coffee, for those who love smooth, low-acid coffee. Some things that I have to be critical of: The breakfast food selection is so lacking. Not much more than bagels and cream cheese, waffle sandwiches, and croissants. Standard, I know, but they are so about being cool and different I don't see why they offer more than just carbs and fat. Other small thing is that sometimes the music is way to loud, I think they forget the mean of the word background music sometimes. It's really mediocre Korean food. I got delivered via Seamless: -bokkum bap (kimchi) -soondoobu (seafood) -japchae (not spicy) The bokkumbap was the worst I've had in my life. And I'm including my own cooking lol. It was basically gochugaru (red pepper flakes) dumped into rice, it was spicy with no flavor. My husband said the best part of it was the fried egg haha. Soondoobu tastes like its from a pre made pack boiled in water (not broth), and then they used some frozen seafood from a pack - tiny shrimp, calamari, tiny mussels. Like the minimum you can do to call it a sooondoobu. The japchae was the best of the three, but tons of noodles, two pieces of bulgogi (in big chunks - it's supposed to be cut into small strips) and virtually no veggies and low on sesame oil (so it was dry and clumpy). Also why is there broccoli in the japchae? lol LOL that's it. It's really mediocre kind of Korean food. read more

Though my heart still yearns for the rag-tag glory of the previous inhabitants of this space, Sputnik, it's great to have a business on this block, and so far they're doing a lovely job. Upstairs is a decent little spot for coffee - they really plunged into the 'Brooklyn' style, and did so in a cute and unique manner. All sorts of distressed wood and doo-dads allowing for a space that is open and cozy at once. Good coffee, so so selection of pastries and the like, plenty of spots to plant your butt and hang out with your laptop. Downstairs is a whole other restaurant run by the same folks, equally lovely in terms of decor, and based on my limited experience with Korean food (and my comprehensive experience with all sorts of food), mightily delicious. read more

Great, quiet place to eat. It's on the lower level of the building. I had the Yachae BokUm which is a stir fry served with a side of rice. It was so delicious and flavorful. The portion was large and I couldn't finish it but that's not a complaint. My husband had the BiBim Bap which was good but not as flavorful as mine. If you like spice, ask for the spicy sauce. Best coffee around the town. Cecil makes the best latte ever, its probably best hot latte have had for a long time. Foam was so perfect like a sponge, and the softness of the coffee lasted until the last drop. The temperature was perfect as well, I strongly suggest you to stay in for the coffee for the best temperature. read more

Not a bad place for coffee (Stomptown) at all. I go there when we run out of that addictive black magic liquid at home (or when special someone don't make it for me in the morning. Yes, I'm gratefully spoiled.). The venue is lofty since its located in the warehouse/factory turned apartment complex. I dig the decor, it is hip and cute. The asian staff are always hipster looking but in a good* and clean* way. Oh and they are always courteous and super smiley**!! I have only had 1 pastry which was the croissant (supposedly from Ceci Cela), sadly it wasn't that good and it was kind of pricey for the quality. I probably won't be trying more anytime soon. For that I will just go to Choice a few blocks away. They have now opened up the lower floor. Its a korean restaraunt, M. and I almost went there the other night but we had to walk out since it is CASH ONLY and we only had plastics in out wallet that day. The menu definatelly looks good. I have never seen Cafe 232 half full. So if you want to chill out, get work outside the house and sip some beverage, this is a good spot. Woke up. No beans. Need coffee. Cafe 232 downstairs. Order two "french press" coffees. Dispensed out of a big thermal carafe, no pressing involved. The thermal carafe sputtered and stopped dispensing halfway through my second cup. Consider this: The shop is empty. There are three employees behind the counter. And they run out of coffee. A coffee shop runs out of coffee. Note to Cafe 232: coffee is what you do, and you've completely failed at it. They fix the situation by adding hot water to the partially filled second cup and then dump a shot of espresso on top. Complete and total coffee incompetence. Oh, and both cups, at $2.50 each, tasted about as good as the bodega on the corner. I wish that Cafe 232 was listed in two categories, one for the restaurant, one for the coffee shop, so I could give it one star TWICE.
