    P3. Spicy Pork Intestines
    Cynthia H.

Didn't go here for a while because of mediocre review rating, but was pleasantly surprised! This place deserves at least a 4 star rating if the food is consistent (which it seems it might not be). First off, portion sizes are different per dish, but be warned that the Beef & Fish Filet in Hot Chili Oil dishes are MASSIVE. I am a sucker for large portion sizes but be prepared to feast on a whole pot of this, which can easily feed 4 people. However, the flavor was on point and there was lots of protein ladled over the bed of bean sprouts hidden underneath. The braised pork belly was beautifully tender, juicy, aromatic, and not too sweet like most places. The cabbage was good, but I feel like a dish with literally just cabbage shouldn't cost $13. The only truly disappointing dish here was the spicy fried intestines - I've never seen mere slivers of intestines before. Every place I have ordered intestines from had the full slices. Not only that but the flavor of these, despite the chili and peppercorns, was lacking. Service was okay, water was refilled adequately. Ambiance was not too loud, or too bright. Overall good experience. We will be back - hopefully the experience is the same, if not better.

Overall: 3.5/5 Food: All of food was decent. Lots of them tasted well over seasoned with garlic. Luckily, I love garlic, but my brother didn't. - Pork wonton in chili oil: I thought it would be spicy, but it wasn't. It was good, but I expected some spice. - Ma Po Tofu: I love mapo tofu. It's my favorite sichuan dish. My favorite mapo tofu is in San Antonio at a restaurant called Tiger Chinese Cuisine. Ever since graduating college, I moved back to Dallas and was in search for a mapo tofu dish similar to it. It wasn't similar, but it was still good. It wasn't my favorite, but if I really am craving mapo tofu, I'll go here because this is the best I've found so far. - Dan Dan noodles: it was the best dish out of the four! Very flavorful, make sure to mix fully as the sauce is all in the bottom. - Chongqing spicy chicken: it's good, but acquired taste due to the peppercorn. The chicken is spicy and floral. It's good, but not what we expected. Service: Our server was very nice and helpful. He was well knowledgeable and helpful. Ambiance: It was very traditional and big. Lots of room and good for family and friends.

Delicious Sichuan foods, highly recommended pork belly. Newly opened in the area with nice table arrangements and lights. Good services.

Just came back from a vacation where I had no Asian food for 11 days so I was craving all the typical bold flavors SO bad. I've heard great things about how authentic Chengdu's dishes were so I decided to stop by for dinner the day after I came back. We ordered 1 of each protein just to see which dishes we would like more. When I tell you all of these dishes were equally good, I'm totally not exaggerating! Each dish was so flavorful, great spice level and seasoned to perfection. Nothing was bland, overly salty or too sweet. A group of 4 of use killed all these dishes and I would go back in a heartbeat! I usually order dessert, but we were so stuffed and the food was so satisfying that I forgot all about desserts haha. Definitely add this spot to your foodie list!

Hmmmm.... I am truly mixed about this place. I would say probably a 3.25 stars? We came here for a Wednesday night dinner, the place was empty, then another couple came. We were the only 2 tables there the whole time. The service was fast and maybe the owner came and chatted with me a bit. Nice folks. We ordered fish fillet in hot chili oil, spicy combination in hot pot, and orange chicken for the kids. Spicy combination in hot pot was decent, but the intestines had just a little bit stronger flavor for my taste. The sauce inside was flavorful. The fish fillet in hot chili oil was so so. Not spicy and not enough boldness in flavor. The fish had a bit of weird taste to it. Could be freshness issue. The portion was fair. Overall okay. Not a place I want to actively coming back.

There is no secret, I love Sichuan food, so it was necessary I try Taste of Chengdu. Came here on a weeknight with a friend and we were quickly served. We ordered the crab rangoons, the chongqinng chicken, and the custom spicy dry pot. The rangoons were ok, but didn't have any crab in them, so I wouldn't recommend these. The other two dishes are must trys. The Chongqing chicken is actually some of the best I've tried. The dish was perfectly seasoned! In the dry pot, I chose beef belly, shrimp, bamboo shoots, and wood ear mushrooms with a medium spicy flavor. The flavor is great, but for my personal taste I would go mild next time so I can enjoy the flavors more. Overall great experience and I'd visit again!

A13. Chengdu Mung Bean Jelly in Hot Sauce
    HsiaoCheng W.

We really enjoyed our meal there. Staff was attentive albeit not super friendly. Decor is nicely appointed and reminds me of chengdu for some reason (probably because it was always Grey and cloudy there). You can order from the online menu which is accessible with QR code. Mung bean jelly was a little more vinegary than other places I've tried. Rice is $1 a bowl. I like the tea pot - got nice heft. The marinated trotted is served warm and isn't spicy. My kid appreciated that. Tan tan noodles was more peanuty than other places but not overbearing. The deep fried chicken cube with dry chili pepper (bone in) isn't the same size chicken as the other boneless dish. The pieces are much bigger. And actually they aren't cubes. They're pieces of chicken. I really enjoyed the ice jelly which was cooling from all the ma la. It has rice wine I think. And it's not too sweet.

Tried some new things from this restaurant! -sesame chicken: very yummy! -chengdu spare ribs: didn't like it so much. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, just a personal preference. I found it to be dry and very spicy.

Ambience is appropriate. Traditional style setting and most likely the cooking as well. Service is fast and courteous with younger age staffs which is good. I always like lots of garlic and peppercorn dishes however they are not as spicy although I requested 5/5 but that's ok. Chicken was over cooked (was dried and rather chewy) in the Chongqing spicy chicken dish. Noodles was a tad too mushy to my likings. The julienne ginger in the spicy noodle soup is some getting used to. I would go back and try other dishes again.

We were surprised that there was country music playing in here when we entered but the food was pretty authentic. We expected Chinese music, and when my husband and I joked about that with our waiter he laughed and changed the music for us! Very lovely staff, everyone who worked there ended up stopping by our table to say hi to us, it was sweet, you can tell they love what they do! Food was pretty delicious! We ordered our favorites, mapo tofu, chili oil boiled fish and a few cold apps and everything was well seasoned and tasty. The cucumbers are always a must for us! Definitely give it a try, wasn't our absolute favorite but it is our favorite in the area so far!

SUMMARY: This should easily be a 4 star place. Why the negative reviews? Chengdu-style restaurant in Carrollton that has consistently served good food and good enough service. Sometimes hard to flag down the servers, but once you get their attention, they've always gotten us what we want. BACKGROUND I used to love a similarly named restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley in LA, so thinking it was a branch out here in TX, we happily went. Been here 3 times now. FOOD We've had some really good dishes and some mediocre ones. The ones that have really stood out have been almost 5's, but for some reason have been knocked down 1 star for personal preference. One of our go-to's has been their Peking duck. Really nice, tender duck meat, nicely presented and served with scallions, pancakes, and dipping sauce. On the last, the dipping sauce has a slightly sour taste to it that I personally don't like. (4/5) Also they're a bit stingy with the pancakes so we have ordered more (not free). They have this nice Chengdu style fried chicken w/ peppers (you know, the dish where they top a ton of chilis on them) and while not as good as the restaurant in LA, its still pretty good (4/5). On the veggie side, they make this excellent stir fried green bean dish. Really simple, but delicious (5/5). Some have not been so good. Last time we ordered egg plant. The chef must've forgot that he put oil in there and added another ladle of oil. We took it home, put it through a sieve and served it over rice (3/5 for the prep). SERVICE Sometimes excellent, sometimes hard to flag a staff member down. But they always deliver what you want. RETURN VISIT? Yes, not our our first choice when we go eat in that plaza but always that place that serves as a good 2nd option/runner up.

If you're dining in the area, you can choose to skip the restaurant dessert and come here. On my most recent visit, I ended up eating outside due to comfort issues. My Overall Rating - 3 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Heads up! The shopping strip is very busy, and parking can be a challenge. In the front there are many crêpes behind glass cases. It's like a wall of food art. Inside you'll find an open space with a few tables, tons of dark wood, an open kitchen, but on my most recent visit, it was uncomfortably warm. It's was pretty outside (early March), and there were a couple of benches, so I sat outside. 1/2 Star. Service - I think this is the new trend, but you now order through a kiosk. Now, there a lot of positives, because you can take your time and scroll through the selections. But for me, there's something about interacting with someone and asking for opinions. On the other hand, it allows the staff to craft your crêpe in the open, which is cool to watch. 1/2 Star. Food - Full Disclosure - I went with my daughter so I'm basing this review on her opinion. She went with the Chocolate Banana. Now, it was loaded, and the folks at T-Swirl Crêpe do not skimp on the ingredients. Each crêpe is carefully crafted from fresh batter. My daughter gave her approval. When I asked her how did her Chocolate and Banana crêpe taste? "Like chocolate and banana". Thumbs up. 1 Star. Will I Return? - Yes. While the very warm temperature inside made it too uncomfortable for me to stay inside to watch the staff construct the crêpes, my previous visits have been great. I just hope the A/C kicks in when the Texas summer arrives. 1 Star.
