This was a gem of a find for our group when visiting Madison. It's located in an unassuming little strip mall, but the interior is nice and inviting. Service was friendly and prompt. They do a lot of takeout here, but there are plenty of tables that fill up on the weekends. This is one of the best Indian restaurants we've found. The food has great flavor. Portions were plentiful. This is my favorite restaurant of all time. I moved away 3 years ago out of state and still think about this place. When I'm back in town I always get the Paneer Masala, Veggie Pakora, Garlic Naan, and a huge side of the Mint Chutney. It all came out shockingly fast, like maybe too quickly? Mango lassi was fancy (kids loved it). Was smaller than expected, but flavorful. Rice was a bit dry -- didn't seem super fresh to me. Trust me, this is the best place to get tikka masala takeout in Madison. It's super delicious and at least $2-4 cheaper than the other comparable options. If you pay with cash, they even give you a further discount! I love to grab some garlic naan to go with my meal, and it never disappoints. The lunch buffet is a steal for $10 (or $9 if you're paying in cash - they offer a 10% discount). We stopped in shortly after the opened on a Saturday afternoon. The restaurant is on the small side, but inviting and laid out in a way that the cold winter wind doesn't sweep into the dining room with every person that comes in. We were quickly greeted, seated, and had drink orders taken, then invited to help ourselves to the buffet. Counting desserts, there were around 15 or so dishes to sample. Everything was hot, fresh, and restocked quickly. Naan: simple, delicious. There was also a vegetable-stuffed option, but I enjoy the plain as a sauce delivery system. Chicken pakora: my first time trying it, and I loved the unique flavor the chickpea batter gave it. Good quality meat. Veggie pakora: also enjoyable, but I think the chicken had the edge. Cauliflower: good texture, but it wasn't my favorite thing on the buffet that day. Samosa: individually sized, which is great when you want to try all the things. Rice: fragrant and cooked perfectly. Chicken tikka masala: basic as it may make me, this is always what I come back to and the bar I use to judge Indian restaurants. Taste of India's CTM has some of the best quality chicken I've encountered, and the sauce is mild, sweet, and has a hint of coconut. I prefer a little more spice and less of a floral note, but it was still delicious and I'd happily eat it again. For Madison, Dhaba is still my #1 for comparison. Strawberry kulfi: super light and a great palate cleanser after a dense meal. It's hard to beat the price and quality of Taste of India, especially on a weekend. Papadams: 8.5/10 Sauces: Tamarind 9/10 Curried onions(?): 7/10 Cilantro stuff: 4/10 Mango chutney was too strong Chicken pakora: 8/10 Chicken tikka masala: Me 9.8/10 Sam 8.5-9/10 Not sure what the flavor was but the tikka had an unknown flavor, like cheese almost it was very overpowering. Garlic Naan bread: 8/10 preferred to be more buttery otherwise almost perfect. Rice wasnt amazing but wasnt bad, could've been seasoned better, otherwise good. As far as consistently strong Indian buffet experiences go, Taste of India takes the cake in Madison. While many buffets focus on quantity, here you will find fewer things that are better quality. In particular, the protein/meat offerings here tend to be much better and more reliable than many of the larger Indian buffet places. Such delicious food. If you're looking for high-quality Indian takeout in central Madison, skip Maharani and come here if you can. Comparatively, it's like Maharani skimps on the seasonings that make the dishes so special, doesn't have as good recipes or techniques, or some combination. I've had the chicken tandoori-spinach and the lamb-spinach - so rich and flavorful, and the quality, cook, and taste/texture of the meats is great, too. Also, both in general and compared with Maharani, the staff are so polite and pleasant. Finally, the prices seem to be comparable to or better than at the other place (while as everywhere, maybe seem to be a little higher than takeout generally was pre-pandemic). Decided let's get a bit out of the college area and ended up at Taste of India. Glad we did because this place is really good. Mushroom Masala was my favorite. One thing they had that i had never seen at an Indian place was beef. Huh... Who knew... Also wasn't really spicy. Good for my in laws. Absolutely the best Indian food. Fresh and a lot of it. But the best thing is the people who run and I think own it. On a snowy day, I went to get Indian food for my son. The restaurant was closed for takeout as it was midday and they close then. However, the person there who I think is the owner, let me in, and prepared the palak paneer and bread, and asked that I come back in 15 minutes. Really great service, great food, and good prices. For over six years I'd been thinking my favorite food was Baingan Bharta. Turns out I'm just ignorant, and my favorite food is actually *Taste of India's* Baingan Bharta. I've ordered the fire-roasted eggplant from every Indian restaurant I've visited in both Madison and Los Angeles, and no version I've tasted has ever come close to the version Taste of India does. They use real, whole sticks of cinnamon to spice it; it's sweet and savory and seems slooow-cooked; it has the perfect amount of fire to it (at level 4 spicy); and what probably helps is the cream I think they dump into it. I don't know what else they do to make it taste the way it does, but it's so, so good. The mushroom masala, paneer bhuna, and spinach aloo are also delightful. My mouth is producing a lot of saliva as I type this. (If that's TMI, sorry, but I want to drive home that this food is like, divine.) You don't even have to mention to people that you're ordering all vegetarian and I promise they won't complain or notice. The people who work at Taste of India are incredibly kind and the most accommodating people in the biz. Last time I ordered take-out, I asked if they could put extra of what they call the red sauce or red chutney, which is the sweet delicious onion tamarind chutney they provide with every order. They declined my offer to pay extra for it and put in 3 extra containers for free. Once I was at a 30-person family reunion and our caterer fell through right at lunchtime. I thought I'd try calling Taste of India to save the day, doubting they'd be able to serve take-out to 30 people within the same meal period, but thinking maybe they could pull something together for us in a couple of hours. I gave them our order and they said, "No problem, that will be ready in 20 minutes." It was. Another time I was supposed to have a birthday dinner at another place in downtown Madison. We arrived at the restaurant: closed permanently (I didn't plan it well). I called Taste of India, asked if they could seat 15 people for a party that night, they said, "No problem, that will be ready in 20 minutes." It was! Not that the speed of their service even matters because I'd happily wait 4 hours just to inhale the air that wafts off of their dirty dish water, but after years of going to this fine establishment I can say that yep, Taste of India consistently cranks out the friendliest service and the best f*****ing food in 20 minutes. read more

This is clearly the best Indian restaurant in town. Having moved to Madison form Chicago several years ago, I bemoaned the lack of high quality Indian restaurants. I found the local favorites to be highly over-rated. That is, until Taste of India opened. My 5- and 8-year old daughters have come to love Indian food as a result of regularly eating here. The lunch buffet is small, but what is offered is excellent. My preferred meal is dinner: my favorite dish is Chili Chicken (nice and spicy). Other excellent dishes include Mango Chicken, Malai Kofta and Aloo Gobhi. Incidentally, Swagat (also relatively new) is also excellent, but Taste of India has the edge with its location on charming Monroe Street. read more

I had the lunch buffet here. It was very good, and reasonably priced ($9 for all-you-can-eat). The bread was outstanding. Some of the hot food was a little on the heavy side...too buttery for me. The spices were good...the dishes were strongly seasoned but with some subtlety and complexity. None of the food here was even remotely spicy (in a hot pepper sense) though. Why five stars? More hot-spicy = good. And less heavy on the dishes. I also was less-than-impressed by an eggplant dish and a few other dishes that were a little on the bland side. Great Indian food in the Monroe St neighborhood. This is our favorite spot in all of Madison, and it just so happens we live just a few blocks down the street. Naturally, we make it here every week. The standard fare of Tikka Masala and Garlic Naan are consistently delicious. We even have a tradition of coming here on Christmas Day when nothing else is open and enjoy their lunch buffet, which is also awesome if you happen to be shopping for a lunch spot. My wife and I were long overdue for a date night. We had some coupons to choose from and Kathy decided on Taste of India. We arrived just before the dinner rush kicked in. We went with the non-vegetarian dinner for 2: Rice Pullao and Fresh Onion Chutney, Mint Chutney, Tamarind Sauce. Chicken Pakora, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Curry, Tandoori Chicken and Nan and Gulab Jamun Dessert. The food came out in 3 courses: Chicken Pakora - App, The Entre items, then dessert. Too much for the 2 of us to finish so we brought the leftovers home to enjoy. The service was attentive, but not bothersome, and the food was very good. We will be going back. read more

This place hit the spot for a craving for Indian food I had. Came here for lunch and happened upon the lunch buffet, which is a great deal. The food was very tasty and I got to sample a whole bunch of different dishes. If I remember correctly there were about 10-15 different dishes available in the buffet line. The mango and coconut ice cream dessert topped things off for us. All of this for $9.95. A couple more bucks for 2 mango lassis that we had with the meal.
