Tried this place for the first time and i wasn't disappointed. I ordered 3 pancakes an order of home-fries and a plate of french fries and gravy. The pancakes are the best I've ever had and they were the size of the plate. The home-fries were good, hand cut from fresh potatoes. I saw pictures of the gravy here on yelp so i had to try them. I ordered fries with gravy and they were amazingly good. They told that they make most of their food fresh on site and it was evident in the food. read more

If you are the type that's going to get worked up over a place that's a little rough around the edges, then this is not the place for you. If you don't mind walking in and smelling cigarettes and it looking like it hasn't been renovated since 1960, then you're good to go. Come for the food, not the atmosphere. This isn't the place you bring the girls to Sunday brunch, but if you want a good old school flavorful meal that's good for the soul, this is it. The food is delicious, cheap, and tastes like your grandma made it. The service is fast, the waitresses knows everyone in the joint's names, and the regulars are going to chat you up. My boyfriend and I LOVE quaint little places like this- especially diners! The This place seriously takes you back... way back. All the waitresses are older and so sweet. Very prompt service. We were in and out within 45 minutes! So now to the important part-- the FOOD. It was definitely good but nothing amazing. I had the creamed chipped beef (one of my favorite meals of all time). I'd give that a 3/5. I definitely want to try something else from here because I know that people rave about some of their dishes. We love the food at the Tastee Diner and the fact that it is a 24-hour joint for nightowls like ourselves. The owner is also a very friendly dude. However, I can only give it three stars because the service is terrible if you're not a regular. The servers are VERY VERY friendly and attentive to their regulars. I understand that- I've been a server too. BUT, if you're not a regular they're not friendly at all (downright rude at times) and basically ignore you once they take your order (I had to ask the owner twice for a drink refill)....which means I will NEVER become a regular. If the servers were equally friendly to everyone, this would be a 5 star diner. read more

The food was decent, pretty good actually. What threw me off was the inside-- I felt like I had been time warped! The servers were pretty unprofessional, yelling in and out of the kitchen at each other about what food they had to offer, what to bring out, etc. The bathrooms are small, scary, and just... I'm from NYC, and came down to MD to visit some family. After leaving an event around 9:30PM we decided to come down to this diner since my cousin said the food was great. We were a party of 4 and all ordered burgers. I personally ordered the tastee burger, the waiter sold me on that one once he said he was basically like the BigMac. I was extremely disappointed with 1) the size of the burger. I literally ate it in 3 bites. 2) Really? It literally consisted of the burger patty, cheese, ice burg lettuce, and thousand island dressing. The only thing decent about my meal were the fries. It came out hot and crispy which is exactly how I like it. Now, I'm not saying the burger was bad. I'm just saying it was disappointing and I definitely had a lot better. Guess I've been spoiled with the diners back in NYC. Bottom line, I wouldn't recommend. But it is decent food for a decent diner. read more

Place is really dated and could use a lot of remodeling. I went for breakfast and ordered the steak and cheese omelette. It was $8 and change. I asked the waitress how big it was and she made it sound large. What I got was a 2 egg omelette with a few small pieces of meat and very little cheese. It tasted fine but for the price should have been way more substantial. Coffee was good and the waitress kept my cup full. Overall a good meal just over priced and the surrounding's a bit ran down. I've never been here sober. Just want to put that out there. It's become an unspoken "tradition" while drinking in the area to end up here for breakfast at some ungodly hour. It's less crowded than Denny's and the food in my opinion, is better. At least I know they didn't take it out of some pre-packaged thing and stick it in the microwave. I always have potatoes and scrapple (I love that stuff...I don't care what's in it) left over which is great to wake up to when hung over and don't feel like cooking. I called and ordered my food in advance to avoid the long wait since I'm at work, didn't help one bit. I arrrived at the location it's a little off to the side but that's ok. I enter and wait to be acknowledged by someone to make my needs know, takes 10 minutes. I inform the server that I called an order in. She says ok and walks off. Same person puts food at counter to be rung up and I approach and wait there for 10 minutes. The same lady walks past not saying one word and finally comes to ring me up. The second I inform her that I have to separate the orders she gets flustered and huffily walks away, leaving me dumbfounded. The older lady comes over and separates the order and rings up the cash purchase and the hefty woman comes over and rings up the other. When I get my order it's messed up , it looks like the sandwich was balled up in the wax paper and thrown in a bag and the fries were cold. I called the manager and he said "we've been in business 300 years and this has never happened, yeah right! I read reviews after the fact and wished I would've read them before. Admittedly, I have only been here during hours where no other place is open. The coffee isn't the best I've had, certainly, but it's fresh at two in the morning. I've been pleased with how cheerful the staff are, and they don't press you to hustle along even if no one else is around. The other night our waitress brought us out two pieces of pie with ice cream because someone had cut the apple pie unevenly. She didn't want to be unfair, and we got it a la mode. I visited the Tastee Diner for the first time today because I wanted to (1) have a good breakfast and (2) I wanted the old school diner feel. The reviews seemed to be pretty good, so I figured why not give them a try. Upon pulling up, I sat in my car to review the menu and because I had received a phone call. My eyes were met by a gentleman who I thought was a patron leaving the restaurant (but later seen he was behind the counter-so I assume he was an employee/manager?). Everytime I looked up, he was staring directly at me. When I no longer saw him outside, I finally decided to go inside. I wasn't greeted by anyone just cold stares and lack of customer service. I saw 2 women sitting at the counter, eating and holding a conversation with the gentleman that was outside staring at me. All 3 saw me come in and looked at me without saying a word until I asked: Can I Sit Anywhere? Them: Yes. Again, no warm greeting or smiles. They simply carried on their conversation. So I went and sat at a table along the wall. It was me and another couple in the restaurant. After 5 minutes of settling in, I was greeted by the waitress. When I ordered my food, the waitress then says to me: That is going be $12.58. Are you ok with that? I was taken aback because I wasn't ordering to go. I was sitting down to eat and the prices were right there in front of me on the menu. Weird. Typcially whenever I dine in at family owned restuarants, the hospitality is unbelievably great. The employees and managers are warm and embracing. However, this time I can't say I had such a grand experience at this diner. I paid my tab and quickly left. Of all the Tastee Diner's in the area, this is probably my favorite. The Bethesda one gets ridiculously crowded on the weekend, and the Silver Spring one just isn't the same since they expanded and moved. This one still kept the classic diner shape, leaky windows and all. Standard diner fare, breakfast served all day, and unlike certain other so-called "diners," no reduced-fat, low-salt "heart smart" meals for the flavor intolerant. The Tastee Burger is still good and greasy, the fries are still hot and crispy, and the coffee's still fresh. And you can still get a full meal and a slice of pie without getting handed a bill for the month's rent. One of the few places still open 24 hours, so it's comforting knowing that you can come here at 4am and get something decent to eat. I have gone here a few times and I believe the food has been really good but very greasy. That lady time I went there the waitress seemed very uninterested in serving us. I did feel that she has something g personal going on that is why she was a little cranky buy your customers should never feel your annoyance with your personal situation. I had tried to come back and pick up a to go order and again a different woman on the cash register didn't even acknowledge me even though she was standing right there when I walked in. I used to drive by Tastee Diner everyday for two years with my dad when he drove me to the Marc train. We always joked about going but never went. After I left Maryland and came home one day, we decided to go just to check it out. We ended up having a great time. The waitresses were friendly with a very casual, family style feel. The interior is very old school and hasn't been renovated, but that's part of the charm I think. The service was quick, the food came out quick, and was really cheap (~5 & ~7) for the breakfast specials. I was suprised that the coffee wasn't bad, a little luke warm but not bad. The pancakes were savory and sweet and fluffy, almost had a malt flavor. The eggs were cooked just as requested and the bacon was crispy and great. The english muffins were toasted well. Overall, it is what you would expect from a 24/7 diner. I personally was pleasantly surprised by the food and more than happy with the service. read more

The prices are reasonable and the diner vibe is cool and authentic. I see others have complained about the service, but our waitress was perfect. I love the personal service. I feel like I'm at the Cheers of diners. The food is classic. Its not fancy or trendy. Its comfort food. I took away a star because the desserts are lacking but who cares cause my patty melt was da bomb and only cost me. $4.95. The prices are PHENOMENAL.
