This place definitely brings me back to the 80's especially since the counter and seating area haven't changed much over the years. Tastee Freez is located at the corner of Raspberry and Jewel Lake across from the Kaladi Bros. and down the road from Kincaid Park. The longtime owner was there as usual giving everyone a friendly greeting and striking up conversations with the regulars. The place was very busy for the lunch rush with more people than usual ordering cones and shakes on a warm, sunny day. I decided to place an order for their foot-long Chili Dog meal which includes fries and a drink. The wait only took several minutes even though there was a flood of lunch orders going through the kitchen. When my order came up, the chili-dog was ginormous. It dwarfed the foot-long sub from Subway and it was loaded with diced onions and shredded cheddar cheese. There was no way I was going to hold this in my hands without making a mess all over my shirt and table so I opted for a plastic knife and fork to keep a civil appearance while scarfing this down. The chili dog was delicious and it made up for the poor sandwich I had at AK Gourmet Subs yesterday. Tastee Freez has other lunch items like burgers, sandwiches, Mexican options, and salads, but the main attraction of course are the desserts. Desserts include the soft cones, dipped cones, shakes, malts, and sundaes with flavors like Chocolate, Vanilla, Marshmallow, Cherry, Banana, Butterscotch, Hot Fudge, Raspberry, Peanut Butter, Peach (one of my favorite flavors), Coffee, Blackberry, and Pineapple. Other specialty desserts are the Freezees (soft serve ice cream with candy and choice of Oreo, Heath, M&M, Butterfinger, Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, Cookie Dough and Grasshopper), specialty sundaes like the Hot Fudge Cake (double fudge brownie covered with ice cream, fudge, whipped cream, and nuts), Strawberry Shortcake (shortcake covered with ice cream, strawberries, whipped cream, and nuts), and the Bananas Foster. If you're here to grab some lunch, some items of note are the Country Bacon Cheese Burger, Pastrami Burger, Hawaiian Burger with pineapple and Swiss cheese, Super Nachos (taco meat, beans, and lots of melted nacho cheese), Patty Melt, the Junkyard Dog or Burger (topped with fries, diced onions, cheddar cheese, mustard, and chili), and the Fish Sandwich (deep fried cod with tartar sauce, lettuce, and American cheese). All of these can be ordered with a side of onion rings, curly fries, tater tots, or cheese sticks. This is the perfect stop to pick up a cool treat before spending a summer afternoon at Kincaid Park. We ordered 2 hamburgers, 1 chicken tenders, 2 cheeseburgers, and 5 drinks.(which ended up being 50$) We waited for about 30 minutes with screaming kids in the car, and they gave us 4 cheeseburgers, one chicken sandwich, onion rings and 5 drinks. For my first time going back scene first grade, I'm super disappointed. And BTW, the kids didn't even end up eating the burgers. Also the there was like one grain of salt per french fry. read more

I live close so this is a frequent stop. Over the past few months I have noticed a shift in the environment behind the counter, of increased quips at each other in front of customers. I wrote it off as harmless humor/banter. The rude retorts heard from behind the counter grew in number and volume. I was completely unsettled by an encounter two days ago, when an almost all-male teenage staff ganged-up on a woman around my own age. One flat out yelled to her a retort to "keep walking" and myself and others in the dining area stopped surprised. The female staff member was visibly upset while the rest of the male staff basically goaded this incredibly rude kid on. She seemed almost in tears trying to correct their behavior. They didn't stop until I moved towards the counter to make them AWARE that their sexist jokes were being heard by a WOMAN. I left wanting to punch the kid but he smiled at me, I am leaving this review instead. Behavior like this on full display is unacceptable. Tried this place and used their online ordering systems and the program said order will be ready for pick up at 7:11pm. Once there, the order was not ready. With the social distance was in effect during my pickup I noticed the pickup area was not setup to handle this requirement. Our order was finally ready about 14 mins later. There was a group of teenagers there just hanging around after they received their food while two to three other people waiting for their order. There was a table in front of the cash registers to help with social distancing but it was within 6 feet so it didn't help. One of our to go bags had two tears/rips and the employee didn't make an effort to correct it. Once we got home, we noticed that our order was not complete and was missing an item. Our experience there was not good at all and may not return unless things get better. Not sure I would recommend with the inaccuracy with our order, delay in food and food quality. read more

First time I've been here, and as usual, I don't have any expectations; go in with just a hunger. Staff was nice and answered questions. The place was clean. It's like a last stand against corporate American run 'restaurants' that have Chef Mic working all the time. The food was quickly served and hot when I got it. Not greasy, but tasty and fresh. I've tried other local small places and those places have either given up on quality, or they don't know how to do it from the beginning. This place knows what it is, a family run restaurant, and it's more 'homemade' than other places. It's like your favorite aunt has made you this lunch. I'd definitely come back for more! read more

I ordered a large curly fries. I am pretty sure they prepared a bag from Costco, and at a leisurely rate given that it took ten minutes for my fries to arrive. The tray of fries was more in the medium range and provided the requisite dose of sodium and lard. The flavor was fine, but four dollars was probably about three dollars overpriced. Everything in this place feels cheap and the bathroom smells terrible. I don't know why I chose to come here instead of McDonald's, but I guess you need to make mistakes in order to learn. Highly recommended if you want an unhealthy, joyless meal that ruins your faith in human cooking. read more

I have been here twice in the last month after being in Kincaid, both times what was ordered was not what was received. First time, I ordered a cookie dough freeze with extra cookie dough and barely got 3. And the second time I took a group of my daughters friends and 4 of us ordered cookie dough freeze with extra dough and one person got 1 dough out of the 4. It was horrible! I remember going here as a kid back in the late '80's early '90's. The only thing I can say this place has going for it so far that I have tried these days is its ice cream and shakes. Other than the menu selection being pretty vast, nothing I have eaten here has stood out as exceptional. And yes, I understand that it is fast food, but I have to categorize this particular fast food quality as lower than most and a step up from Dairy Queen. (That's not saying much!!) The decor is in desperate need of renovation. It looks like it is about 30 years overdue and it is not kept very clean. The upholstery has dried on catchup on it. The walls have carpet trim and it looks like it hasn't seen a good cleaning in awhile. They have gluten free buns which is LIFE CHANGING, one of the only places in town with them!! The burger was great, and so were the fries. Also- phenomenal customer service. We went after a day of four wheeling, and another customer took my shake. I waited a while for it and when it didn't arrive, I asked about it. They made me a new shake in a larger size and refunded us for more than the original cost. We tried to refuse the refund but they insisted! I have never been treated so well at a restaurant. I also love how much they support the community, with their sponsorships of sports teams and the local schools. I really can't say enough good things about it here! read more

I'd easily say this place is better than Arctic Roadrunner. Its not like they're competing but out of most local burger joints, this is the better. It was my first time so i was very pleased. It was busy but the food still came out fast enough. The prices are very fair and the food was done to standard. They have a kids meal which my little sister liked, the variety of food (hot dogs, burgers, ice cream, etc.) is awesome and the service was also good. This place gets major business and I can understand why. They've been around for so long and they make good food. The woman manager (I think?) screams at everyone and is such a loud mouth. Most of the employees are young, so this is probably their first job. Long time customer of Tastee Freez. Been going here since I was a kid. Always a great experience until today. I believe with or without this COVID issue, employees should practice proper food sanitation practice. The cashier (the only boy) helped a customer who paid cash. He gave back change as well. After he was done with the cash register, he proceeded to making sundaes and ice cream cones on the side. No washing of hands or even hand sanitizer. Because he was young & this was probably his first job, I decided to talk to him on the side privately. Didn't want to shame him in front of anyone. Away from his coworkers & manager. Called him over by the soda machine. After telling him my concerns about his lack of proper food sanitation practices. He just shrugged it off and didn't seem to take it seriously. He just said "It's okay" "I guess" - I don't think age should be an excuse to not handle food properly. I hope the owner is reading. Please tell your employees to take this job seriously. First job, second job or 20th job. It don't matter. A job is a job and it should be taken seriously. read more

I had ordered a dipped ice cream cone and the employee called Laney had put it upside down in a cup, after I had specifically asked her not to. She was very rude when I calmly asked her if she could make another one, because the ice cream was spilling down the sides and was very messy and my two year old was upset. When I politely asked if I could get a different one she simply sighed, rolled her eyes, and angrily made another one in a different size than I asked for. It's a really good place to eat out. They have a lot of options on their menu and it's all affordable. The service is really nice, and although it is basically all teenagers working there, I wouldn't let this discourage you. They are quick at prepping the food and desserts and they are friendly. I am probably biased because I used to come here when I was little, so now that I am in Alaska it's become a little piece of nostalgia for me because it hasn't changed much. Even though I've had bad customer service from them before, my daughter was craving corn fritters and they were on my way back from midtown so I called in for an order to go to give them another shot. They told me 10 minutes, which was perfect. I got there and there were about 5 people waiting for orders, which is why I called ahead of time thinking mine will be next. Twenty minutes later I'm still standing there waiting after hearing the cashiers ask the cook about my particular order twice, which the cook apparently blew off and kept putting up orders of fries in the rack. It's an open kitchen so yes, I can hear their conversations quite clearly. I'm the only customer there and they're putting up food no one ordered! Just when you think you've never had such poor customer service, you go into a place like this and you're proven wrong. I made them give me my money back and told them why. My rating is based solely on this delicious chocolate dipped banana I just finished! Yum. They also have Nutter Butter shakes! Can you imagine? Anyways, I got myself quite a ways from downtown on my rental bike and camped out at this TF for a bit while I waited on my rescue ride (part of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail was ripped up without a detour route).
