Prior to the ownership change I used to frequent Ly Luck about 100 times a year. Ly Luck prepared very traditional and authentic Cantonese food. When the change of ownership happened I had high hopes for the restaurant as I knew that the recipes were passed on. When the ownership changed there was a noticeable drop in the quality of the food and a drastic increase in the menu prices. It forced me to look elsewhere for my new go to Chinese restaurant. A few days ago I went there again with my Dad and brother as that is the place they wanted to go to. Ly Luck is now open for dine in which under the old ownership was take out only since the Covid shutdowns. The restaurant's decor is nothing fancy but it was clean and looked very similar to the pre-covid days. First thing I noticed is that the prices had been reduced and were now in the same range as other local Chinese restaurants. We ordered: Dry Beef Chow Fun - It was pretty good, just the right amount of greasiness, and even had a little bit of wok-hay. For those who don't know what wok-hay is. "Wok hei" (鑊氣), or "wok hay," is a Cantonese term that refers to the unique flavor and aroma imparted to food during authentic stir-frying, often described as the "breath of the wok". It signifies a concentrated, smoky flavor achieved through high-heat cooking in a well-seasoned wok. Chicken and Vegetable over rice lunch plate - It was tasty, not greasy at all and the portion size was good. It wasn't exceptional and it is not something I would order. But if I had to have that elsewhere in a place where Chinese food was limited, I would have been ecstatic. Eggplant and Tofu - which wasn't on the menu, my Dad just asked if they could make it and they did. They asked what type of sauce and the type of tofu he wanted. It was very good and might have been the best thing we had. The waitress was very polite, attentive, and facilitated our off the menu order. My impression is that the food is now much better, much more affordable, and I will be frequenting Ly Luck way more often. read more

I used to eat at Ly Luck frequently when I worked in the neighborhood and was always incredibly fond of their BBQ Pork Fried Rice. It had been at least three, maybe four years since my last visit and I knew this was exactly where I wanted to go if I was in craving some Chinese. What I can immediately say is that the food is still as good as ever. I know a lot of people have been highlighting some noticeable changes with the food due to new ownership, but that will attest the food is as good as it was before. My wife and I ordered a pineapple and sweet and sour chicken accompanied by a beef chow mein to go and literally received it in less than 10 minutes upon placing my order through the phone. The employee that I spoke to said I could come right down and it would be ready in a couple minutes, and I honestly didn't believe her but to my surprise by the time we got to the store, which was in less than 10 minutes. It was already well packed, and ready to go. That in itself is an instant improvement from the previous ownership who typically would need at least 15 to 20 minutes. They were great, but this lightning fast turn around should not go unnoticed. A couple of things where I feel they can improve is the amount of chow mein in comparison to sweet-and-sour chicken is easily a 40% difference. It's not that I expected it to be stuffed but between two people that sweet-and-sour chicken felt like it was hardly there. It also literally only had like three pieces of pineapple in the entire thing so I don't know why they even mention that as part of the item. The beef chow mein however had a more than generous amount. It definitely felt like they were a bit stingy with the beef, but due to the amount of noodles that they included in instantly made up for it. Lastly, my wife was gonna pick up the order and she didn't appreciate how the employee who was serving her had her eyes glued to her hands to see if she would include a tip. My wife was going to tip anyway, but she didn't like how forced it felt due to the employee's surveillance. She did like the friendly nature from the employee as well as the atmosphere of the restaurant but helps the next time we stop by that awkwardness won't be present. As a result, this restaurant gets a 4/5. An important sidenote, you could order the food from their website, but it is cheaper to just do it over the phone. read more

Ly Luck was my go-to family Cantonese restaurant for literally decades (37 years). When it changed hands during COVID a few years ago, the food & service became horrible and we stopped going. Last fall, we decided to give them another chance - they got a real Cantonese cook and re-hired some of their veteran staff. Food and service were good, although more expensive than before. But we returned several more times because it was more consistent. Last night, a friend arrived from overseas and we went back. We were the only customers - not a good sign at 6:00 PM. We ordered flounder, but the server recommended bass - it was supposed to be fresher. I reminded her that we are only 2 people, so we wouldn't need a big expensive fish. We ordered gai-lan but she advised pea sprouts. Both these dishes were off-menu. We also ordered walnut prawns listed on the menu for $20. They used to serve a complimentary soup with every meal. No more. And it appears the chef has changed again. The prawns were tasty, but mushy / not crispy. They brought an extra large platter of garlic pea sprouts enough for 8 or more people (not their normal-sized dish). It was flavorless. The 10" steamed bass was flaccid and bland. I could tell from the texture it was not fresh. We only had water to drink and one bowl of rice between us. They forgot to bring the rice until 15 minutes into the meal. When it arrived, the rice was soft & sticky (seemingly leftover) with broken pieces / not whole grains. During the meal, the server had her children or grandchildren screaming on speaker phone while sitting at the table next to us. Their conversation was so loud we had difficulty talking at our own table. The check arrived. It came to $108.00. Outrageous. In the future I would advise asking for the prices whenever the server suggests an off-menu dish. I had not expected this because "specials" posted in Chinese on the wall indicated $18 for pea sprouts and $35 - 39 for steamed bass, depending on the size. These dishes are ubiquitous in every Chinese restaurant. It looks like they might have padded the bill. Not the way to treat a 37-year (or any) customer. There are much better Chinese / other options where $55 - $60 per person would have gotten us fresher, tastier and more food, good service and more tolerable ambiance. Revisted Ly Luck for the 1st time in over 4 yrs after Covid started & when they only served take out & then changed ownership It was never a great restaurant to begin with but they had fresh fish tsnks & served while steamed fish which was fine until now The fish I got this time around was undercooked (the bone didnt lift free from the flesh of the fish) sent it back & it still wasnt fully cooked when reserved on top of that, they served us old (no freshly steamed) rice I didnt bother complaining because even if they cooked some, it would have take a 1)2 but that's how long it takes to steam a fis & they should have started a new pot of rice when the steamed fish order came in but thry didnt. NEW MANAGEMENT, NEW CHEF, NEW MENU Sometime last year, the restaurant went under new management. You no longer see the same ladies that would manage the front of the restaurant. The menu has also sightly changed. While the offerings looks similar, it's different. My mom was craving a dish that we would always order. XO Beef Clay Pot. It was a dish that seemed to be slowly cooked with fatty and tendon style of beef with napa cabbage and ginger. We ordered something similar on the menu, Beef Stew Clay Pot with Bean Curd. The meat was not that tender, and there were pieces in there that were too hard to bite easily through. My thoughts are, if you're going to take over a restaurant, you should be familiar with the previous menu and dishes and try to make it the same. If not, you might as well call the restaurant something else. The Egg Plant with Garlic Sauce was really good, I would order it again. The rice was a little hard... The gentleman server was not very attentive. I would always find his back to me when I was looking for him (either for water, boxes, the bill). As a server, I feel like your attention should be the interior of the restaurant and the front door. At the time we were the only ones in the restaurant. I am certain, at one point he went outside the front door to smoke a cigarette, and the front door was open so the smell wafted in. The prices are expensive. We paid $47 (with a $5 tip) for 2 dishes and steam rice. I don't know that I would ever go to this restaurant again, unless I were given some kind of coupon. Before I could rely on dishes that were to my liking. Now, I don't want to take the risk of being disappointed, especially with how expensive food is these days. Ly Luck has been our go to restaurant since1990. New ownership for several months now. We figured they have worked out the kinks now. I should have clued in that at 11:30 I was parked outside for 10 minutes waiting for the take out to be ready. Only 3 people went to pick up food. Usually there are a substantial amount of people! As I walked inside there were absolutely not one diner. The dishes looked delicious. We ordered 4 dishes. So so disappointed. Three of the dishes clay pot beef stew, clay pot fish with tofu and chicken chow mein tasted the same! Bland and lacking any flavor what so ever! Ordered fried chitterlings...ummm cold, limp and almost soggy!! The lack of vegetables in the dishes was because they were old chewy and bitter. Everything was neatly packed and placed in a small cardboard box. The total was just $52.50. The lady who handled my order had a mask and gloves on. Social distancing reminder was posted near the cash register. Here's a quick breakdown on the food I got: Salt and Pepper Pork Chop - It was decent. The pork chops were crispy and meaty. It could have used a bit more seasoning and aromatics. Ginger and Scallion Chicken - Solid. The chicken was tender. It was topped with a good amount of ginger and scallions. Soy sauce provided the seasoning. Ginger and Green Onion Beef - Pretty good. It was more like green and white onion beef. I didn't taste much ginger in the dish. Instead, it was made with lots of green and white onions. Beef was tender. Ly Luck Beef Stew - Superb! The beef was braised to tender perfection. Portion was huge! Dry Fried String Beans - The beans were fresh and cooked just right. The ground pork topping added a savory dimension to the dish. Fish Fillet with Chinese Greens - Decent but saucy. This is an authentic, delicious, and affordable Chinese restaurant. They have a menu you can choose from in the "3 dishes for $25" category you can order from for both lunch and dinner. I order take out every time I come home and visit. My favorite is the steamed queen clams over vermicelli noodles. The queen clams have a great texture and is cooked basically with hot oil, soy sauce, garlic, and green onions. My mom's favorite is the sautéed beef with veggies over rice. The beef is tender and they give ample veggies to go with the meat. In general, any dish you order from here will be really good and a sufficient portion size. Service is quick. A night off from cooking we decided to dine in the restaurant and on a Friday night, they were busy! We ordered several entrees so that we wouldn't have to cook over the weekend. We started with Westlake beef soup, Hung Tao Yee Won Ton, beef and broccoli, steamed pork cake with salted fish (yummy), steamed spareribs with black bean sauce, chicken with ginger and green onion, combination clay pot, The portions were hearty and food delicious. My favorite was the steamed pork cake so light and fluffy and the steamed spareribs!
