    Yang Chow Fried Rice
    Michael Y.

Browsing around the Rowland Heights area for some Cantonese food, I found Tasty Garden just off of the 60 freeway with a heap of reviews here on Yelp. Trying to find another solid Cantonese spot in the San Gabriel Valley, I figured I would check them out and see how their food compares to other restaurants in the area. I decided to swing by for a pickup order and chose to order a Pork Chop with Spicy Salt ($19.95) and Yang Chow Fried Rice ($19.95) on a Thursday afternoon. The food was made in a reasonable amount of time which allowed me to get back on the road relatively quickly. Taking a look at each of the portions, I would get the fried rice and skip out on the pork chop. Looking at the pork chop, there were about 9-10 pieces of pork inside which was decent. But to this, each piece inside was very thin compared to other fried pork chop dishes in the area. For $20, I would have expected more pork or thicker pieces of meat. Other places in the area usually give more meat (and even a free side of rice) for about $15 to $16 dollars! Because of this, price to portion for the Pork Chop with Spicy Salt was a little less than par. As for the fried rice, the portion was larger and lasted for two meals which was nice to see. I also liked that there were a good amount of shrimp, barbecue pork, peas, carrots, and egg. This would fair just fine.... only if the dish was priced around $15. Most Chinese restaurants in the area will charge less for rice and noodle dishes compared to their meat and vegetable entrees. Because of this, the price to portion was about average for the Rowland Heights area. The taste of the dishes seemed fine for the most part, but I will note that the ingredients in both dishes weren't as fresh as they could have been. Beginning with the pork chop, the dish was simple and had a rich, savory taste in the meat. As for the moisture, the meat and exterior coating was close to dry. This could have definitely been due to the thin pieces of meat. And because of this, the flavor of the spicy salt did not complement the meat very well. Moving to the fried rice next, the rice itself did not have much flavor and tasted close to a regular steamed rice. The rice grains themselves had a dry consistency which was at the very least acceptable. The shrimp had a light salt flavor as well which was interesting to see. But each piece was rather gooey and more soft than expected. The peas and carrots were pretty small and pretty standard which were just decent. And for last, the barbecue pork was the best part of the dish with its lean and fatty pieces of sweet flavor. From trying a few of Tasty Garden's dishes, I definitely think you could do better with many of the other Cantonese places in the nearby area. The price for the dishes were pretty steep compared to other restaurants and did not offer as much when looking from a quantity perspective. The flavors of the food fell short which was also somewhat unfortunate considering the price of each dish as well. Based on these ideas, I'd argue Tasty Garden deserves a 3 star out of 5 star rating. If looking for a quick stop, Tasty Garden is pretty convenient as it is just off the freeway. But if you're looking to try the best of Cantonese food in the Rowland Heights area, I would choose somewhere else.

This family style restaurant doesn't disappoint. We came in for a family lunch and while the restaurant had some patrons inside, they promptly greeted us as we walked in the door and seated us right away. Since we had a big, meat eating family, we always order our go to items: orange beef, french style filet mignon, honey pork chops, orange chicken, sweet and sour fish, walnut shrimp, crispy noodles with seafood, and green beans! So glad we at least got one vege dish out there. But all the food we ordered were pretty decent. I think my least fave was actually the French style filet mignon, the beef had a weird after taste for me and it felt like the meat was not fresh. I'll leave it at that, and it came served on top of piled up onions so the portion is misleading. My favorite go to dish here is the honey pork chops, It's so good with rice and very satisfying. The service was pretty good, they offered us high chair for the kids, served our drinks and even had special dessert at the end of our meals. I feel that this restaurant can handle large parties pretty well, serves pretty decent and delicious food, and is great for family gathering. Also, I noticed that they don't serve tea anymore. I assume you'd have to order them whereas before it would just come to the table, even before you get the menu.

This is a place I would have family gatherings at for lunch/dinner. It's definitely more of my preference than the other Chinese restaurant close by. It was easy to be served well when it's not too busy. So there are not complaints about the service, and I do prefer this restaurant over a lot of other places for Chinese food. The food was good, and the portions are not stingy. The place is pretty clean for the most part.

Well, it was a late Friday night and I was craving some fried rice. Once again, I turned to my Yelp app. I placed an order to Tasty Garden for the Yang chow rice. It arrived quick and was packaged well, complete with chopsticks and chili oil. The rice was fluffy and tasty. This rice actually had the perfect combination of flavors. I look forward to trying more options in the near future. Thank you

Avoid at All Costs! This was hands down the worst experience I've ever had at an Asian restaurant. I ordered the beef fried rice, and I honestly have no idea what kind of meat they served--it certainly didn't look or taste like beef. The texture was off, and it was almost unidentifiable. The entire dish was unappetizing, and I couldn't even finish it. If you're looking for good food, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. I would never, ever recommend this place.

I was convinced to make the 38 mile drive to Rowland Heights to try one of the last few remaining pure Hong Kong Cantonese "cafe" restaurants in town and it was certainly worth the drive. I had lunch at Tasty Garden during the weekday so it wasn't very crowded. At one time, there were several Tasty Garden locations in the San Gabriel Valley, but I believe this location in Rowland Heights is the last one still standing and with new management. It is a pretty large casual modern dining space that can accommodate lots of patrons. The food is very good and reasonably priced. The green onion pancake appetizer comes with an optional thick curry sauce. The shrimp and egg was very fluffy and delicious. The steamed chicken with ginger sauce was on point. The steamed pork patties with salted fish paste reminded me so much of my childhood. The deep fried fish was done to almost perfection. And the hard to find ginger milk pudding dessert was absolutely delightful! The texture was smooth with just a hint of ginger which made it quite refreshing to finish a meal. Service was very good. The wait staff was very accommodating and they offered a couple of complimentary items including the ginger milk pudding. If you are looking for some authentic Hong Kong cafe-style food, Tasty Garden is the place you definitely want to consider and you won't be disappointed.

My favorite dish from the spread I got is the salt and pepper pork ribs. It doesn't taste like the typical ones from other HK cafes. It tastes a little bit on the sweeter end. The salt and pepper wings were too salty for me so I won't recommend it. The gai lan was also full of flavor. I would definitely come back and try other dishes here when I'm back in the area again! Definitely the vibes are so friendly and the staff can speak Cantonese!

It was my first time trying this location and ordered for take out. Unfortunately, I did not like any of the food that I ordered. I've had many other Hong Kong cafe styled food from other restaurants but this one was not it. The food was bland and I would definitely not order from here again.

This restaurant is located in a fairly busy plaza with other food spots. Came on a Friday night and I like how this place closes at midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. It was already 9:00 PM so only took us about 5 mins to find parking. It's a fairly large restaurant and there was only 1 party in there at the time. I love how there's a large selection of dishes to choose from. We ordered: Seafood XO sauce udon - love the texture of the noodles and there was a good amount of seafood. I think this dish was about $16 Sweet and sour fish - came with a side of rice. Had a nice crispy batter and the fish wasn't dry. This was also about $16 Loved both the items!! Will definitely be back to try the other dishes. At the end, the server brought us tofu pudding with ginger syrup for dessert. It was a little too gingery for me, but still a nice gesture.

Came here because my brother really liked Boston Cafe and was sad to see that it closed. He heard from his friend that Tasty Garden had a change in ownership and is now an upscale version of Boston Cafe offering Hong Kong Cafe foods. Tasty Garden definitely satisfied our expectations. Their menu was very extensive offering a wide variety of Hong Kong Cafe traditional dishes and drinks. To our surprise, they did not offer a complimentary borscht soup for every guest like Boston Cafe does. However, they do offer free refills of their drinks like every other Hong Kong style restaurant. The food was wonderful! Tasted just like Boston Cafe. Only the fries were different. Food took a while to come out, especially the fries took. They gave us a free dessert at the end that tasted like a creamy ginger pudding but I didn't really like the dessert and felt bad for wasting it. Gave this place 4/5 starts because it was hard to get service. Had to wait a while to get a servers attention to ask for the check. Most of the staff previously worked at Boston Cafe.

I have been coming here for over 10 years and food was always consistent and dependable. Great Cantonese Chinese food for reasonable prices. Even during the pandemic, I would order from them regularly and food was good. Service has always been as expected in a Chinese restaurant but it's the food that is most important. But about a year ago, they changed owners. And all the wait staff were replaced with people that were not as friendly. While I can appreciate they are trying to modernize (you can order online now), it's the food quality and prices that are most important. The food does not taste as good. I thought I'd give them another chance and yesterday's food was the worse. As an example, they used to make one of the best Hainan chicken rice. Instead, what I received was cold cut chicken being passed as Hainan chicken. The rice wasn't even seasoned. And omg, the portion size was 6 small pieces. It looked like it was half eaten. All the old pictures I posted are outdated now. I'm just sad that I lost a good place to eat.

One of my favorite authentic Hong Kong restaurants in LA. They have all the dishes from the motherland and the taste is fantastic! The restaurant is huge inside and you can definitely bring a big party with you. I find the servers super friendly (maybe it's because I speak Cantonese) and the food comes out hot and promptly. I love how during the weekends they open until midnight so if I crave some late night munchies, I'll definitely stop by here with my family. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are huge. Highly recommend!
