The chicken cesar wrap ($13) was just what I needed as a quick meal before I head off to Logan Airport. It came out in about 2 minutes and the wrap was nice and warm. It was a good size with tons of lettuce in it and it wasn't ruined with too much dressing. There wasn't much chicken in it as expected, but the chicken was luckily not tough or chewy. Got on the bus in Bangor, ME at 7 am. Landed in South Station about 11:30 am. Had some lunch but still had about an hour before my train. Needed a restroom but what to do with my suitcase. Also wanted a coldie. This was perfect. Bathroom right next door and plenty of draft beers. Had a couple of beers and their New England Chowder, very good and the bacon was a nice touch. This is at the south station location So this is just a tiny satellite setup With a bar a few high tops and few tables to catch the commuters in the station. Not much to offer the menu is limited and pricey for what you actually get. Every food item is prepared in a small area at 1 end of the bar and all cooked with microwave and a convection oven so it's safe to say everything is pretty much prepared ahead. So, you gotta adjust your expectations for what this place is: a bar in a train station. It's small, limited and expensive for what it is. My coworker and I came here to grab a bite before we caught our train. We started with the chips & salsa, which were terrible to be honest; watery salsa and cardboard-flavored chips. However, my caesar salad wrap was much better! It was small but had good caesar flavor. I appreciate the cape cod chips it was served with. The BEST part of this place? Waiting for a connecting train we decided to try the small Tavern in the Square sit down restaurant inside South Station. The barkeep was very nice, very busy and very efficient. Out of their tiny kitchen, one young woman was quickly pushing out food orders while the barkeep made sure everyone was happy. We were in and out in less than an hour. The food was good, the drinks strong. A bit pricey, but very convenient and quick for a sit down spot. They have take-away too. read more

Stopped in for a quick dinner and was surprised at how much I loved it!! Easy to get to and quick and helpful service. I loved the sweet potato burger, the flavors melded perfectly and the feta cheese was a great addition. Loved that they had women's basketball on the multiple TVs and enjoyed watching! read more

Seems like a fine place to get a drink while you're waiting for your train. I wasn't a huge fan of the bloody mary I got, but I drank it. I also ordered what they called a "jalepeno popper dip" with (house made?) potato chips. Since most of the jalepeno poppers I've ever had are hot, I assumed the dip would be warm. WRONG. It was a cold, white dip, that was probably some combination of cream cheese and something spicy - but no jalapeno chunks or obvious speckles of dry spice, so I'm not sure what was spicy. Again, I ate it, but it wasn't really that wonderful. Honestly though, it seems like the "nicest" place to grab a bite and a drink at South Station, so I'll give it an extra star for comparative greatness. read more

Came here while waiting for my train. Surrounded by places serving crêpes and McDonalds, I was pleased to find this mini bar situated next to the board with train times. For a train station tavern, I found it to be a overall decent experience. Sipping a seasonal Samuel Adams draft, the Winter Olympics on the TV and wooden seating really created a cool winter feel. I was disappointed to find that most of the drinks I was looking to try on the seasonal menu weren't available. Combined with the pricy food options ($13 for nachos), beers and game watching is probably the way to go. For a spot in the train station to kill time, probably your best option. read more

If you aren't into the SportsBall stuff, one of the monitors is just a view of the Big Monitor with the train times. That's what I was there for. Beer is overpriced. We had minimal wait time before our seating, and our waitress was super nice and efficient. They did their best to create a nice little oasis in the middle of a transportation center, and the food was generously portioned and the beer was very cold and sudsy. Hungry, with 45 minutes to kill before my train, I decided to grab a beer and a cup of 3 alarm chili....... hands down the worst chili I've ever had. It arrived in a paper bowl that was half full, soup like consistency and a PINCH of shredded cheese, four bits of scallion on top and Zero heat. The only thing alarming about the chili was that it cost me $10. When I expressed my displeasure the waitress she responded with " well, it's train station food". I didn't realize that was a thing. Really nice layout in South Station, they have an impressive 32 beers on tap, and an attentive staff. Their menu is a limited version of their regular restaurant menus, which was perfect for lunch with sandwiches and salads. Ate lunch here so didn't get to enjoy any of those beers beckoning me (office is very close, too risky) ;-) I had the Monterrey chicken sandwich, which was solid, but not very flavorful. I felt it could use some cheese. A little more expensive than what I remember at their other locations, but a good addition to South Station. read more

I've come here quite a few times with the hubs and friends to grab a beer or some nachos. They have a full bar and quite the food menu for such a small establishment. This is why I find this bar impressive...handling crowds with a tiny kitchen. They make up for it with their extensive beer list. The service has never been lacking in my opinion. Quick! A crowded mini bar with good options for someone waiting for their next bus or train. I had the chicken quesadilla that was pretty good I couldn't really see the shredded chicken it was kind a mush. The clam chowder wasn't good for it to be in Boston. Surprisingly solid beer selection for a place in a train station. They have Yuengling but not Narragansett, which is cool with me but seemed odd in Boston. They do have Fernet Branca which makes this place a solid bar. The food menu has some vegetarian items clearly marked but I didn't really want any food so I didn't inquire as to their veganability (I'm vegan). It did seem like one could have a few apps and salads as a vegan but no entrees, which is acceptable for a bar in a train station. They had the World Cup on two screens which was another plus. A nice little, beer filled oasis in South Station. I was here at about 11:30am on a Sunday, waiting for a bus to depart (just a short walk from the train terminal). I sat at the bar, which had a good number of seats and was surprised that a bar at a train station would have a decent and varied beer selection. I opted for a Sam Summer Ale, and the bartender asked if I wanted a large one. I obliged. For only $8.50, it was a steal. Other than that, I just passed the time watching ESPN on the screens above, and doing nothing else. Two others at the bar ordered some pretty big Bloody Marys, so if that's your thing, they looked pretty darn decent. I've been here a few times to kill time when I miss my bus to get home. It is very conveniently located in south station, therefore it caters to commuters and is a pretty decent stop to grab a drink or/and a bite to eat. Bar area is pretty large however there are small tables around, this tavern on the square is pretty small and I am assuming is much smaller than other locations in the area. Today I missed my bus again, waitress as usual is very pleasant and responsive however I was very disappointed to see that they have a new menu and discontinued their chili which was super delicious. I ordered the chip and dip with the Maui dressing which was ok. Essentially it tastes like plain salty chips with a tangy ranch dressing. I also had the chicken quesadilla which did not taste very well, to me it was extremely salty to the point that I could not eat anymore. However my drinks were pretty good, I ordered a couple of captain and cokes which were mixed quite well and were affordable. In summary, this is a decent place to grab a drink and kill time, however I would not go out of my way to eat here. read more

With open seating, we grabbed a couple stools at the bar and Mary quickly helped us select some drinks. I was craving Clam Chowder, but the manager ran over to give me the heads up that it was made w/ pork after hearing me say I don't eat bacon- greatly appreciated! Honestly, if you are expecting dazzlingly impressive bar in a train station, you need your head checked. This place hits the normal wickets, nice TV, display board with arrival/departure times/status for the trains, decent seat, and a lot of taps. I have only been to "TITS" once and it was a Sunday about a half hour before the brunch was closing up. I was very impressed with the eggs, bacon, sausage and your other normal fixings. They also had fantastic pastries and a soft serve ice cream. The price for the full brunch was very reasonable. Try and get there with ample time because they start to stop replenishing with about 35 to 40 minutes left. I had a few hours to kill while waiting for my bus back to NYC and was hungry after a full day of activity in Boston. So I checked out Tavern in the Square which has seats, drinks, TV and an interesting looking menu, right in the middle of South Station. The quesadilla, chips and guacamole description sounded kind of good (so did the maple turkey sandwich description); I ordered the chicken chipotle quesadilla with cheese, avocado, and marinated chicken with chipotle seasoning and spices. The product was sizeable enough. packed with chicken, avocado, and some cheese - fairly substantial in terms of quantity. It comes with cilantro infused sour cream and a tomato/onion vinaigrette-type mixture (like a basic salsa) on a bed of lettuce. The challenge is that the chicken was a bit on the dry side and not fully marinated in my opinion. That made bites not as flavorful as they could have been. Now the cilantro infused sour cream and the tomato/onion/lettuce mix help moisten bites and add some mild flavor, but it was clearly apparent the main draw, the chicken, was not. Oh, and while I don't want my quesadilla overpowered with cheese, this one could have used a bit more, especially with the lack of flavor. The service was very quick - too quick at times. While I appreciated the speediness of being greeted, watered, and order taken, it would have been nice to have a little more time to enjoy the place before running up on me to give me the bill, then stalk me till I paid it. There's always room for improvement in the food and service industry, even with five star service. Three stars for speedy and friendly service but somewhat flavor-bland (though generously sized) fare. read more

The summer my friends and I lived in Allston we frequented that Tavern in the Square location almost too often. So, when I was visiting this weekend (they now live in the north end) and we were discussing brunch locations I mentioned that I wished we were still living near TITS she said that a new one had opened right near by. Unfortunately, because of the size they don't have a brunch menu. But we decided we could forgo eggs and try this place out. We wandered in just after opening and the staff was all very friendly- our waitress was especially great- water refills were necessary for the hangovers. Even though the menu was limited everything looked good and I had a difficult time deciding what to order. Ended up with the quinoa bowl with roasted vegetables and grilled chicken- Delicious! My friend got fries and a pizza which were both great as well. It started filling up for the Pats game and we had other friends join us for bloody mary's (great- but even the mild ones were spicy). Overall it won't replace the giant Allston location in my heart but I would definitely return! read more

Was in town a few weeks ago and got to South Station a bit early for my train so I pulled up a bar stool and ordered a drink. That's right. It's right inside South Station which means it's not huge but sooo convenient. I was there on a Tuesday night so I didn't have a problem getting a seat. There were 2 bartenders (not sure why, maybe one was the cook?) but Jeff came right over to me and took my drink order. They advertise a "beer of the week" but I ordered a Rum and Diet instead. He even asked me what Brand Rum I preferred which I thought was great. It was a great pour and I got to enjoy it while watching hockey on the NHL NETWORK! Yes! Yes! Yes!!! Also, I wasn't worried about missing my train because they have the schedule right there on a tv at the bar. They had Led Zeppelin on the radio and a couple next to me ordered Guinness and it was a perfect pour. Mmmm! Next time!!! I didn't order food but will when I return. Great little spot!! read more

Grabbed some chowder and a few pints prior to an Amtrak ride to NJ. The 6 oz chowder was good. I liked the crumbled bacon on top, but wasn't offered any black pepper or hot sauce. I can overlook this because the chowder was that good. Three pints and 6oz of chowder was $30 (included a 20% tip) which I feel was on the pricey side.....but they are located on some pretty prime RE.
