When I went to write this review, I was shocked this place only had 3 stars. We stopped in for lunch while skiing and shared several dishes and grabbed a few beers. The quesadilla, while small, was awesome. The nachos really hit the spot and the star of the show was the lobster mac and cheese. What made our lunch really worthwhile was our server...Lana. She not only did an awesome job giving truthful recommendations and guiding us to the right food...she was also a ton of fun interacting with our group while still be professional. She also gave us great recommendations for what to do and where to go from a "locals" perspective. I'd definitely come back, but I'd make sure to ask for Lana! She will make it great! read more

I have to admit that since I've been plant-based I have come into many experiences with restaurants trying to do something to satisfy the growing vegan population. This restaurant offers a vegan menu, the narrative seems potentially amazing, but the delivery was as bad as food could possibly be. I ordered a vegan pad Thai which listed five or six ingredients, and when it came it had literally no flavor at all and was devoid of all sauce and peanuts which would make it a pad Thai to begin with. No manager came to apologize or learn what went wrong. At the end three stars is not deserved. It must be challenging to have a three star rating because people accept mediocre so readily. This restaurant is the lowest rated restaurant in Vail at lionhead village and I promise you with good reason. Avoid it like the plague. read more

If there were negative stars, this place would get one. We made reservations for a dinner with out of town guests several weeks in advance. The night before (at 8:30pm) our planned dinner.......we got a call that our reservation was cancelled. Why?? because they had booked a large group and were not serving anyone else. I went to the restaurant, asked for the manager and a young man came out. I told him the issue and asked what the Tavern on the Square was willing to do to compensate us. He said, Oh, i have to talk to the MANAGER about that. Evidently, they sent a child out instead of the manager I asked for. When I again asked for the manager, I waited and was finally told she was in the bathroom....and evidently, hiding from me! She finally came out with platitudes about how deeply sorry she was, etc. but was unwilling to offer any kind of resolution....a bottle of wine, a voucher for a dinner at another date, etc. Bottom line, this place will never see our family again. They do not understand customer service. Open Table was blamed but I sincerely, believe that they get a list of reservations via the Open Table website more than one day in advance. They had ample time to fix this and waited until the last minute. read more

Relatively expensive brunch with interesting ideas but lacking execution. We stopped by on a Monday morning before heading off to the slopes as a party of 6, and we were seated fairly quickly as the place was basically empty at 8 AM. I split an order of the Colorado Mountain Breakfast and the Banana Nut French Toast. For the former, the hash was a bit too crispy, not enough flavor, and it was lacking in meat in general; the beer mustard was alright, but it's never a good sign when you need the sauce to save the dish. The banana nut french toast was an interesting idea in using banana bread as the french toast, but it didn't quite work well and was basically banana fosters on banana bread, which wasn't that tasty. The service was alright for that time of the morning, but the meal is just generally an expensive, not-great-tasting one. Not a place I'd want to return to. read more

Sunday morning.... Pretty poor for Vail. Staying at the Arrabelle with exception service and we went to the Tavern on the Square at the base of Eagle Bahn Gondala.. Service is slow... Food comes after 30 minutes and cold, no silverware, napkins or condiments. I had to ask 3 different servers in 3 separate occasions before everything showed up for our very cold breakfast.. I don't normally write scathing reviews but this place had some seriously bad food. Three of us came after skiing because we had walked by the night before and it has a very nice atmosphere, live music and overall pretty busy. We wandered in and ordered a few drinks. Fun. We decided to meet up there the next day for some dinner. Mistake. Two of us ordered the French dip and I we also shared a Caesar salad. The best way to describe the flavor is to say that it didn't have any. No salt, no pepper no nothing. The horseradish sauce was a joke. It tasted like it was 90% mayonnaise. Salad was boring and bland as well. I mentioned this to the table next to me and they said they were disappointed as well even thought it looked wonderful... oh well. Overall, music and atmosphere is 4 stars. The specialty drinks we tried were all great. Service was fine and the food is expensive and TERRIBLE. The waiter at the bar was terribly rude. I was visiting Vail for my son's wedding & celebration. We were enjoying cocktails outside when a mountain shower started. My group of 11 went inside to the bar to continue our celebration. No one was at the bar when we arrived inside. The bartender came over to me & grabbed one of the stools that was vacant (but going to be used by one of the group). When I tried to stop him from taking the stool, the bartender told me that the chairs were needed for "paying customers." After a couple of the guys in the group had a few words with the bartender we closed our $250 tab & left the bar. This bar/restaurant is in a prime location. Right in the center of town on the creek with beautiful pines all around. The view alone is worth the visit. I don't think the edibles were outstanding but the cocktails & service were done nicely. There are tons of television screens inside and around the bar- great place to catch a game. Most places in Vail are budget busters but this wasn't terribly priced. Planning my trip back to Vail and this place is high on my list for après-ski drink. read more

The view at the Mountain View bar was great! The windows were open, which at first was fine, but it got cold and let yellowjackets in. They finally shut them, which was nice. The cheese and charcuterie plate was pre-made. There was runny liquid on the plate from the peppers (probably). I found 2/3 of chevre had hairy mold on the outside of them. The plate was pretty expensive for what we got. We had beers and some fancy drinks. They were ok. The special cherries were great! Drinks are expensive, but the drinks are stronger than you'd expect. The view was great! The bartender was pretty friendly. I'd go back, but I don't think I'd order the cheese plate again. read more

The dining scene in vail, co is substantially focused towards high-end, fine dining which makes sense as this mountain town caters towards a major tourist population. Yet, some nights, you just want to kick off your ski boots and have a tasty meal without breaking the bank (relatively speaking as we are still talking about a tourist destination). Enter tavern on the square. This approachable but classy spot has high-arched ceilings and dark wood trim to bring some sophistication to the space. However, the flat-screen tvs, smattering of high-top tables and kid menus aplenty, shows that this dining scene is made for the masses. Steps away from the eagle bahn gondola inside the arrabelle hotel, diners will find typical bar fare such as chicken wings, a handful of burgers and a couple higher priced items like steaks and chops. The burger options range from a traditional cheese burger with all natural angus beef to a black label burger with honey mustard on a pretzel roll to, my personal favorite, the ahi tuna burger; lightly seared and topped with creamy avocado, wasabi mayo and peppery arugula. Sadly the kitchen had some inconsistencies with their grilling skills as the beef and bison burgers were all pretty dry and leaning towards well-done. Not my favorite when you are craving a juicy, drip down your hand kind of burger. Tavern on the square does offer more diverse menu selections through their starters. Options range from pork belly sliders, baked brie with a huckleberry jam, lobster mac n cheese and the crowd pleasing chili con queso. The queso has a hint of heat with the addition of spicy chorizo and is served with doughy pretzels and also crispy tortilla chips. I feel like this could be the perfect location for an après-ski scene where skiiers could congregate for a frosty cold beer and a few shared snacks. When it comes to amicable, low-key and budget conscious fare, tavern on the square is a great option if you are coming in from a day on the mountain or looking for a understated evening out. The menu offers conventional options that are sure to please the masses and great noshes for sharing. Hopefully the kitchen can get their cook-times in order to better the consistency of their food. Though, I don't think diners will mind much as they are just looking for a causal meal without the pretentiousness many vail restaurants have. read more

In Vail, where food is expensive and service tends to be lax, this place is a mainstay for great food at good (Vail) prices and a terrific atmosphere. My lunch staples are the salads, the club (which doesn't look like the typical triple decker club sandwich but is ten times better), and the brunch buffet which, for $20 is a steal given the quality of the food, staff, and atmosphere. Of course, when I'm doing the brunch buffet I'd definitely advise going to town and truly making it both a breakfast + lunch, but if you love breakfast foods it's a great deal. The girl trying to seat us asked if we would like a table....yes we would like to eat! She was still having such a hard time that we just sat ourselves at the bar. The real reason I am giving this place one star is because of the food. It was horribly disgusting! My husband got the Lamb Bolognese and it tasted like it came from a school cafeteria. I got the Shrimp and Scallop Cannelloni under the "Pasta" section of the menu, but there was no pasta in my dish at all. The shrimp and crab was not fresh and smelled horrible. Don't go to Tavern on the Square if your expecting a great dinner. We were with a large party and everyone agreed THIER dinners were below average. Only the burger people said it was good. Caesar salad on a warm plate with dried out chicken on top, overlooked dry salmon on sandwich, Cremated chicken for fried chicken, over salted pasta, dry halibut should I go on? My wife ordered sweet potato fries with a chicken sandwich and I ordered regular fries with a Bison burger. While the sandwiches were warm, both fries were cold. We sent them back and didn't get them again until our meals were almost done. The regular fries were still cold. By that time we were ready to leave. We each had 2 alcoholic beverages and the bill was $95.00. At no time were we offered any concession. A gentleman next to us saw the entire transaction and asked if they offered a free drink or anything. This is really our go-to place in Vail. Yes, it's not exactly gourmet or ground-breaking cuisine, but it is good American food (as the Tavern name suggests) in a comfortable atmosphere with decent service. They also have tons of TVs for sports watching, and are very adequate for young children. We usually stay in Lionshead and eat here at least once every time. I think it's a good place that I hope sticks around. read more

This was my first time in Vail so being a tourist I suppose you should take my post with a grain of salt. The restaurant was very nice and the view was incredible. Their drink selection isn't shabby but the waitress not only brought me the wrong drink which I ended up accepting. Then she forgot bring out my orange which I had requested when she had given me the incorrect drink. Not a huge deal/ The food is a bit pricey but with a view like Tavern on the Square it can definitely be expected. The calamari was alright, large thick slices instead of baby calamari, the breading wasn't season very well, the sauce was good, but the calamari was just the rings. Besides that the chili's temperature was only warm instead of hot. I'm obviously not expecting scalding hot chili but hot enough to keep it's temperature in the cold weather. The flavor was mediocre to be honest, I was expecting a bit more. This place also preauthorized my credit card twice, leaving me with three charges, and when I called to ask a manager about this I had to call back three times to get a straight answer after being promised a call back twice. About 6 hours past total and no response back, finally the third time I called the managers had everything figured out but for whatever reason had yet to call me back. Regardless of how pessimistic my post may sound the entire experience wasn't terrible, but I probably wouldn't go back. I can see how others may like Tavern on the Square and perhaps I didn't order their better dishes and came on an off day. I wouldn't say to avoid this place but don't expect this to be the end all be all. In my opinion you may the price premium for it's view and location, so if that's what you're looking for Tavern on the Square is the place for you. read more

The bacon Bloody Mary was very good. The bacon is candy-coated. Two pimento-stuffed olives. One slice of lemon and lime. The Caesar salad was excellent. The cheese was shredded instead of sliced. The small crostini was excellent. The fries are frozen. The Barbeque and Hot wings are excellent. They were winglets, not drummies. The bone-in pork chop is excellent. The cut was excellent with minimal fat. The seasoning could be kicked up a notch. The apples and beets side was okay. The au gratin potatoes were okay. The pretzel rolls were excellent. Tavern on Square was suggested to my group of girlfriends as a place to watch football the weekend of the NFL playoffs. We called ahead and made a reservation for a table in the bar for 11 with a view of the TV for both games that day. Our table was perfect! We were right in front of the tv at a long bar height table. The food was all fantastic as was the service. We ordered a smattering of the appetizers off the menu and shared. Throughout the night, people just ordered entrees when they were ready. The wait staff was completely accomodating considering our unorthodox ordering style. Everything we ate was fantastic- the buffalo wings were great, the tavern fries were awesome, we couldn't complain about anything. The prime rib sandwich was tasty and the elk dip sandwich was good as well. Until.... the manager came over midway through and told us that he needed us to move. The hostess sat us at the wrong table and he had reserved this table two weeks earlier for another customer. He offered to buy us a drink, but it was still rediculous. We sat there for two football games with 11 people drinking and eating and spending a rediculous amount of money. The worst part was, he asked us to move because he reserved the table for a client that is a big Broncos fan... the part that ended up at the table were Patriots fans... so to add insult to injury they weren't entirely honest about the whole thing. read more
