My brother and I visited for dinner in January while in the area for a ski trip. The whole visit was awkward and not that great. Upon arrival, the heavy set gentleman who greeted us said to follow him and then proceeded to put menus on a table which did not appear to be designated for us and then walked into the kitchen with us still following. We then stood there confused and another employee wasn't even sure what table was supposed to be ours. I am still to this day not sure what that interaction was. We only had one basic question for our server while ordering an app. There was some sort of appetizer sampler platter on the special menu that we considered getting. It has some sort of fried mozzarella on it and we were trying to determine if that was the same or different than the cheese curds. She had no idea. We ended up getting the cheese curds due to the confusion over the sampler platter. They were the best part of the meal. My brother had the wings. Nothing fancy. I was super excited for the maple pork entree since I scanned the menu earlier in the day. It really had no flavor. The menu said it came with mashed sweet potato. It did not. It came with regular mashed. Their menu had some typos on it as well. The whole experience was annoying considering we expected a way better dinner overall based on the how website and reviews portrayed them. I would not recommend. read more

This place was generally pleasant but the food was very overpriced for what you get. The food we ordered (potato kegs, chicken wings, French onion soup, clam chowder, fried pickles) all came out quickly but was underwhelming considering each one of these cost $12-14. Perhaps their entries are better but if you're a fan of getting a lot to share- not great. read more

We ordered chicken parmigiana and parmigiana crusted chicken in a cream sauce- both were flavorful and cooked perfectly! I would recommend both dishes. Food was overall good but some lettuce in my mother's salad was slimy, the severs were friendly and the music selection was nice but the grill was down for about 30 minutes. There was however nothing to snack on during the long wait between our appetizer and meal. Review of Taverne on the Square, Claremont We had high hopes celebrating a birthday dinner at Taverne on the Square, but it turned into one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had in a long time. Despite having a reservation, our evening quickly unraveled. After waiting 45 minutes from the time we placed our order, our server came back to tell us that the restaurant had run out of steak tips--one of the meals we had chosen for the celebration. Another 15 minutes went by, making it a full hour, and still no food had arrived. When we asked about the delay, our server explained that the staff was new. While we understand training takes time, it doesn't excuse such poor execution--especially on a busy night when customers expect a basic level of service. To make matters worse, we overheard several nearby tables also complaining about similar delays. After wasting over an hour with no meals in sight, we decided enough was enough. We left $30 in cash to cover our drinks and walked out, vowing never to return. A birthday dinner should feel special; instead, this one felt like a complete disaster. Claremont has other restaurants that value their customers' time and business--sadly, this is not one of them. read more

The drinks were great, I wouldn't go back for the food. We had the crab rangoon appetizer which was very good. I got a burger for dinner because I had read the other reviews and thought it would be a safe bet - wrong. It was extremely dry, I only had one bite and did not want anymore. The bun was freezing cold like it had just been taken out of a refrigerator or freezer. The fries were fine. My partner ordered steak tips, he liked them, I didn't find them particularly good - think Applebee's quality. Service was not very good, which was surprising because it was not very busy. We sat with no drinks for a long time and had no one check on the food after it was served. The waitress was nice, but inattentive. They also somehow mixed up my partners order with a plain burger, so his correct food came out about twenty minutes after mine. The ambiance of the restaurant was very good though, this would be a great place to grab drinks before going somewhere else to enjoy dinner. This used to be a go to- now it'd be a last resort. When paying they asked me if I wanted change for a take out order- staff should always just bring your change and let you decide then. Took 8 minutes for them to get my change because they couldn't get into the register. I open my food and my onion rings were so overcooked that they were dehydrated strings inside, the calamari was under cooked and not served with the sauce they advertised (they gave me cocktail sauce) and the chicken sandwich has no taste. My wife and I visited this restaurant on Nov 22, 2025. The facility is nice, the service was good but the food was not. I ordered steak tips with mashed potatoes. The potatoes were stone cold. My wife ordered chicken Marsala which came on a bed of rice. Again the rice was stone cold. We mentioned it to the waitress who apologized and offered us a free dessert. Instead we opted for a cup of coffee to finish off the meal. You guessed it ... the coffee was stone cold. We gave up. We will not return. The anticipation of going there far exceeded the reality. read more

Fried fish, was overcooked and dry, and took an hour to come out. The people beside us, were there before we arrived, when we left had not received their burger and Rueben sandwiches. The waitress told them theirs was the last order in, did I say they were there before us! To entertain us while we waited for our food the hostess had her head down on her station. We have pictures! It was a kid who needs direction not criticism. She would tell people there was a 20 minute wait, there were plenty of empty tables and booths. Our waitress was attentive and personable, she knew we weren't pleased, but had no influence. She gets 5 stars and the tip to match. We had been there a year and a half ago and had a good experience, not much anyone could do to convince us to go back anytime soon. The food was pretty good only two weeks ago when we went but, likely due to poor management or bad ownership, this place seems to have taken quite a dive. It's a shame that Tavern has taken such a turn in a bad direction. We've been customers there for years. This time I have to question returning. My mother fish from her fish and chips was grey income and smelled rotten. She sent it back but the waitress who took it back had an attitude. (She wasn't our waitress she just helped out. Our waitress was very nice) I had the go fish sandwich. My fish was nothing f like my mother's. Mine was white and flaky. The crab Rangoon dip which we normally love lacked flavor and crab! It was literally cream cheese topped with sweet chili sauce. The chicken wings were all drums and 2 flats and very tough like they were over cooked. The bread for the steak bomb was stale and chewy. Turned over management and ever since it's been terrible service. Slow waiters and waitresses or they blame the wait times on the kitchen staff. The kitchen is slow to move food out and they don't serve a table all together and most egregious of all is they served raw chicken tenders so be sure to check your meat before you eat. I went there on a Saturday night, about an hour after it opened. Place was about a quarter full. After being shown to a table, I had to wait 15 mins before a server came and asked for my drink order. After giving it, I had to wait another 15 min for it to be delivered. The waiter then asked if I was ready to place my order, I told him I would like the fish & fritas. The waiter advised that they didn't have any fish. At this time, the waiter chose to tell me about the nights specials. I opted for the macaroni and cheese. I have eaten at this restaurant many times over the years and had many really good meals. Unfortunately that was not the case the last few times I have been in. I understand that they just recently opened back up with a new manager and cook but this last visit was the worst. The waiter did not know what was available for Wine and took almost 15 minutes to figure that out... It took almost an hour to get the food and there were maybe 3-4 table in the entire restaurant with customers at them. The order was wrong for one of our group and it then took 15 more minutes for the correct meal to be delivered. We had come to celebrate with our friend a momentous event and hoped to make it a special night for her. I've been a loyal customer for two years - every Wednesday. But tonight was horrible. The owner (I think, I've never met her), berated a staff member calling her a b#%^! and telling her she didn't deserve her job IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE RESTAURANT. WHO does that?? I happen to know this staff member had been there over six years which is monumental in the restaurant industry. She was a phenomenal server. She deserved a private conversation. Whatever your differences, you don't cuss someone out in front of the whole house! Shame on the owner for allowing this. I will never set foot in this place again. That was horrific. At the very least you (owner person who screamed) could have offered an apology to us but instead you disappeared into the back. We appreciate our service people here in the UV. Meh. Unremarkable food. Nothing was bad.... just bland. I had nachos which were about the same quality I could make at home after a $10 trip to Shaw's, and a salad that tasted like it was a bagged mix. My date's chicken dish was okay, they said it just lacked any real spice or flavor. The mimosas we got were so over-sweetened they hurt my tongue. With a little work this place could be good, as nothing was bad and the service was excellent. But for now, just not worth spending a night out for. read more

Just left Taverne and will not go back unless a few things improve. Had a reservation for 3 for dinner at 7. Walked in a little early to a mostly empty restaurant and was seated immediately to the right of the hostess stand; asked to have table moved and they accommodated us. The new table was marginally better. Server was nice however one of us ordered a Vodka Gimlet "up" with ice on side and it was served with a cherry- on ice -this is not how a gimlet is made. I Got a BLT which was fine. Hard to mess up a BLT. Others ordered the Delmonico steak which was average. Other party member ordered Pasta Primavera - it was swimming in a butter-like oil which had very little flavor. A very disappointing dinner for one of us diners and marginal for the other two. Needless we did not stay for dessert and feel bad because our server and other customers deserve better. read more

This was my first experience with Taverne. Service was great. My husband got a burger which he really enjoyed. I ordered Mac n fries that I couldn't eat, and then got the egg rolls. The egg rolls did have spicy in the title, but these were too hot for me; didn't have much filling and the dough seemed like it was underdone. My husband let me eat the other half of his burger. The Mac fries were soggy/underdone, and the pork mixture on the top was way too wet and overly sweet like a large portion of processed pre packaged pork bbq that was gloopy and overly sauced with too much sugar in the sauce. read more

Ordered the Taverne burger medium and it was well executed. Fries were excellent. Service was lacking but her coworkers took up her slack. If the server was better I'd have given place 3.5 rounded up to a 4. Also had the Alabama white bbq sauce which sounded weird but in fact they were delish. Went for Dinner expecting the same experience as we have before. Note: DO NOT eat here during Alumni weekend. Restaurant looked to be at half capacity, no wait to be seated. We waited 10 minutes just for our waitress to visit our table. We ordered drinks, appetizers and our meal at the same time. Appetizer came out after 15 minutes, tasted good, presentation was as expected. Our entrees came out 30 minutes later. We ordered brisket and my wife ordered the burger on special. Brisket was good, a little too much fat and too much BBQ sauce. Wife's burger missing two of the ingredients that put it on the specials list. Wife finished the burger before we saw our waitress again. Very dissapointing experience to say the least when we have had good ones here before. read more

Where to start... hmmm. There is a definite change of focus or management with this place since we were here last, about a year ago. The menu is about as creative and on trend as a Dennys, perhaps worse. The place was empty on a Saturday night, our first red flag. Everything, from the warm Chardonnay, stale burger buns, filthy 'clean' cloth napkins, to no toilet paper in the restroom, were all signs pointing to, "We do not give an actual sh*t." What a shame, such a big, beautiful space to fill, one would think that being on one's game is the order of each day. The lighting was even horrible, with bright, obnoxious booth lighting (which made it pretty easy to observe the filthy flooring), and uneven bulb wattage and burned out bulbs in the ceiling pendents. It was obvious that the staff was not trained, if a day. I feel nothing but truly sorry, that an establishment like this, is wasting such time, space, energy and customer's expectations and money. read more

Very disappointing visit. We have been here before and found it to be very good. Went this time and will never go again. Food was not good and the atmosphere has deteriorated to a cheap bar. We had drunk people dancing near our table. If you are looking for someplace to eat in Claremont there are so many better choices. Save your money go to McDonalds it's better. read more

Had a marvelous late lunch-early dinner here with my mother. She had an enormous Cobb Salad that was fabulous (tho would have been even more amazing with some avocado), and I had NY Strip Steak with mashed potatoes and squash medley. The steak was organic and antibiotic-free, pretty tasty--I did ask for medium rare and got more like medium-well and some of the squash pieces for some reason tasted slightly of fish (my guess is they used the same utensil to add butter to their haddock dish as these vegetables) - but it was 90% awesome. Our server could not have been more helpful--she asked the kitchen questions on our behalf, and was just really upbeat and a professional, pleasant server. We sat outdoors on a mild night. It was nice tho pretty loud with people with broken mufflers roaring by, guys on motorcycless blaring Bob Seger, homeless folks ambling by -- that was fine but if you're expecting a quiet time you might not get that since it is just off the central thorofare/traffic circle. We got dessert to go--my Mom had flourless chocolate cake which was insanely delish, with chocolate ganache, chocolate mousse, and some kind of vanilla cream. My tiramisu was good too! read more

Party of four for dinner last night. We were one of three or four parties. Maple glazed salmon was okay but all the other entrees well not very good. The prime rib, which the waiter said was excellent, was overdone as it had been ordered medium rare and came medium to well. The burger was the wrong burger as is came with bacon on it and the burger ordered didn't include bacon. The flat bread, which had been ordered as an entree was soggy, overly sweet and unappetizing. The beet salad only had two pieces of beets. Previously we have had decent burgers and drinks here but we will not be revisiting for dinner again. read more
