It has been over a year since my last review, and I am upping my Stars from a 4 to a 5. I have been in there several times in the past year, and Tay Ho has been consistence in both their food and service. I recently ordered the Pork Wonton Soup which is not a Pho, however I am not a fan of Egg Noodles as I prefer the Rice Noodles. Tay Ho is very accommodating in changing or adding whatever you like to any of their dishes. I am also not a fan of Tripe, Soft Tendon and when I see this on the dish I am ordering, I have them take it out, and they will add extra of whatever Protein you prefer in the meal.... Their service is really excellent. Each time I go in the Service is always as nice and accommodating as possible. I always leave a little extra for a tip, as I am always ordering extra of this and that to enjoy my meal.... I think Tay-Ho is worth the stop. Their Pork Wontons was extremely good with lots of full body flavor. Also, they Do Not charge extra for Hot Tea, which is a PLUS in my book. I was in a Vietnamese Restaurant last week, and they charged $2. for one tea bag to be put in a hot pot of water... So, if you see me in there.... take your time in saying hello as I will be busy enjoying my meal at Tay-Ho. read more

I just couldn't give them 2 stars. Went on Sunday at the end of the night with us only being one of two tables being waited on. The waiter which is the person that sat us was very inattentive. We only got drink refills when we ordered another shot of Jack, being the primary reason I didn't purchase a third shot. There was a lady there that gave him no assistance but stopped us from getting a sauce tray and bought us two sauces individually. There pho didn't come with vegetables so we were charged $2 extra for both soups for the same amount of vegetables most Pho spots I go to without being charged. A pretty bad experience, poor service, poor food. I would not recommend anybody come here. Honestly the Pho was below average from a food perpective. read more

By far the best Pho! I enjoyed the Pho Chay. Vegetable broth with a bunch of veggies and topped with fried tofu. The bowl seems endless. Great service, even doing an unexpected rush during a weekday lunch. It was raining and everyone wanted soup! read more

My initial visit when it first opened many years ago did not impress me. It has been a couple of years since then and I decided to try the place again. It took a few minutes to be seated even though the place wasn't too busy. I think the waitresses were supposed to be the hostess as well. Our waitress was great and patient with us as we set up our child's booster seat. We had the crispy spring rolls, grilled bbq pork shredded pork egg roll rice noodle dish, and grilled bbq pork special broken rice dish. Sadly none of our food was impressive. The taste was either lacking or just super sugary. My broken rice dish didn't even look like broken rice. The highlight of the experience was the great service. With so many better options out there, I just don't see myself coming back here anytime soon. read more

Been going to this Viet restaurant since we read about them in the Richmond Magazine "Best New Restaurants of 2014" issue. Love the spicy red broth noodle & all the other pho's are awesome. The short ribs dinner come out sizzling & the crepes is a can't miss. It really is the best Vietnamese restaurant in Richmond & serves ably as a stand in for my now retired Mom's cooking. Can't find one bad thing to say except some times they are slow to bring out food & don't tell you why or don't really make amends for the slow kitchen at odd times. I had the broken rice with grilled bbq pork chops. It comes with fish sauce which I pour on my rice and it is a delicious combination. It comes with two huge pork chops and enough rice for me. Bonus the month of November they have food specials.. I ordered mine to go and when I arrived my food was ready. read more

Just ok. 2.5-3 stars. Fresh spring roll is ok, needs some herbs or something to brighten it up a little. Wonton soup is ok, standard soup with some fried garlic and spring onions. Better than I was expecting. Got the pork spring rolls, which were very nicely presented. The peanut sauce isn't really a peanut sauce though. I split a pho dish and the BBQ pork bun with my step dad. They were both better than I had thought they would be--we normally go to pho so 1, but they were closed. My friends and I decided to start our meal with the shrimp spring rolls - these did not disappoint and were served along with a peanut dipping sauce. We also each ordered the P1 (the pho with eye round steak, flank, beef tendon, tripe and beef ball) and it was delicious! This savory bowl of noodles was the perfect cure for a cold and rainy September day. The broth itself was a bit sweeter than I expected, but tasty nonetheless. Stopped in here on our last rainy night in Richmond area. Greeted and seated quickly. Waitress promptly approached and took our order. I ordered the Pho special with beef, meatball, tendon and tripe and an order of their fresh spring rolls. The wife was feeling very good and opted for a small bowl of crab and asparagus soup and a order of fresh spring rolls. The orders came out in a reasonable time. I gad to request fresher Thai basil as what they delivered was turning black all over and rotting in the middle. That said everything was extremely good. Located right across the street from the hotel I was staying at. Amazing food. This was our first time trying Vietnamese food and I am a fan for sure! The pho was absolutely amazing, the true star of the dish is the broth...a perfect blend of savory earthy broth with a slight sweetness. The tofu spring rolls are also VERY good!! I loved the appetizer platter, it gave you samples of most of the appetizers on the menu. But I came here to try out the pho. I have to knock off a star for the broth, I felt that it was weak and lacking in flavor. If you ever had great pho (go to philly) then you know the broth is what drives the flavor profile throughout the dish. The quality of meat is ok, and the noodles were overcooked or too soft for my taste. I will continue my search to find more pho places. I haven't found my favorite just yet. I would return here. My family of 4 came for dinner about 4 weeks ago. The decor was lovely, but the service and atmosphere left much to be desired. Our first indication was from immediately walking in, seeing a mostly empty restaurant in the evening on a weekend. There was someone working in the bar area, with a table covered in binders and papers. In my personal experience, when restaurants are busy the managers/ owners don't work at bar tables. I assume a floor manager was our server, as she wasn't wearing a uniform. She was pleasant and did a good job getting refills and answering questions. The menus were sticky. There were several non-bussed tables that sat for 20 minutes while we were there. The food was good. Everything tasted as it should and ran along the same lines of other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. But the rest of the experience turned me off for future visits. read more

So, I have to admit: I'm becoming a bit of a pho-snob. I have tried several spots in town plus a few in DC and I say with absolute conviction, Tay-Ho wins hands down, no contest, y'all can go home now. The pho broth is equivalent to liquid gold (read: delicious enough to fantasize about bathing in it). This is a family-run operation and it shows. Every encounter I've had (more than I care to admit) has been lovely-- friendly, accommodating, and efficient (I just love when these adjectives accompany service). Once again this is one of those places I hate to throw 2 stars because it looks so bad but since the description of 2 is "Meh. I've experienced better." then I feel its the honest way to go. First and foremost, this place is gorgeous. You can tell they put some serious money into the building, and that's a huge scare for me. As a previous reviewer said, you should focus more on the food side and less on the design side. (After all, your biggest competitor is in a busted dirty house and is packed wall to wall with a line out the door.) The service is incredibly friendly, and as a guy I'll say very nice to look at, however their knowledge and behavior is far from par. The waitress dropping F-Bombs every other second while gossiping with the waiter who spent 20 minutes on his smart phone... not a plus. I'm a huge advocate of proper restaurant etiquette and those are big fails in my book. As for the food though... it's Meh. The Crispy Spring Rolls at $2.95 an order are certainly more expensive than all the competitors and fall short as far as taste. They were good, but certainly weren't something I'd crave like the ones over at Mekong. The Pho Tai Nam ($9ish?) was a miss. While the noodles were cooked well, the broth was very bland and tasted far too similar to premade beef stock you would get in a can or box at Kroger. I was also highly disappointed with the beef. I couldn't interpret that what I was eating was actually Flank steak, and the Round was too thick and had that terrible poor quality meat taste. Here are some suggestions in case the restaurant gets this... 1) Put some effort into your meat, consider some brisket, and figure out how to tenderize it. 2) Your condiments need serious work. Don't present your Hoison in the bottle it came in. Using premade is fine, but trick your customer by putting it in a squeeze bottle. I promise it makes a difference. 3) Invest in dried chili flakes in oil instead of just Sombol. Pho City and Pho So 1 both do this, and honestly it's better. Anyways, I'll give this place another shot, but not for a long time so they've got some time to learn to swim with the big boys of the Pho industry. read more

I stopped in here last night for dinner after my go-to Pho place (Pho So 1) was closed. Let me tell you... I am so glad I did. This was one of the first times I have gotten something other than Pho soup. I ordered the Onion Beef Broken Rice and could not be more happy with it. I will be back, even if it is take out for this dish! My fiance ordered the pho, which came out just as ordered (she's a picky eater, most places don't get the pho right, no veggies, no onions, just broth, chicken and noodles. I know, that ain't even the real thing!). Anyway, they actually got it right! The waitress was very attentive and really paid us the attention you like to see. GREAT SERVICE. However, this great service may have had to do with the nearly empty restaurant. I'm not sure why it was so empty, but it was Veteran's Day - do people not eat out on Veteran's day? Any whoooo - the Pho soup was good - their brother was quite different than some of the others. More meaty, darker. Not better or worse, just different. If you're in the area - give this place a try. Maybe on a Tuesday when your other pho place is closed. Crank up the atmosphere so I'm not eating in a ghost town and I can get to the five stars. read more

I always feel like there's a new Vietnamese place popping up in RVA every week. This is another one, opened just recently. We had a good meal, with good service--they were attentive and answered our questions, got our food promptly, and overall, I think the food was very VERY good. We had the hot and sour, split spring rolls and an entree: the chicken with keffiir lime leaves, very similar spicing to what you get in Tom Yum. So, it was kind of like, all the flavor of Tom Yum (I know, it's Thai) but as a chicken with vegetable entree. It was quite tasty, and the flavors really stood out. I live not 5 minutes away from Tay-Ho so whenever I am having a pho craving, this is the place I go to. I enjoy the food and the atmosphere in the place is great. I have a couple of friends that work there so it is a plus. The best thing about Tay-Ho is their portions. It's reasonable, other pho places I have been to don't give enough noodles in their pho or other noodle dishes, but I felt that that there was just the right amount. I was so disappointed. I saw it was a Vietnamese place, and I think my expectations were a little high. I thought the menu would be bigger, but they focus mainly on soups. I had a hard time finding something I would like, so I opted for the beef fried rice. Figured you couldn't go wrong there, and it was not bad. The spring rolls were not the best, but they were not the worst, either. My wife on the other hand, had some trouble with her meal. At Mekong, they give you steamed rice papers for you to roll your meal in, but here at Tay-Ho, they give you this strange hot water-filled contraption to prepare the rice paper. It was a mess. It could have been user-fail, but it could all have been avoided if the rice paper came to the table pre-steamed. She also said that the pickled carrots would have been better if they weren't paired with onions that made them taste strange. Also to note, if you want to talk to the person sitting across from you while there is a small, noisy child in the establishment, this is nearly impossible. The ceilings are very high and noise travels and resonates. There were very few people here while we were here but the only thing I could hear was the loud child sitting maybe four tables away. It was pretty aggravating. I would have thought that for the amount of money they spent making this place look like a million bucks the food would have tasted like a million bucks, too. Definitely add Tay-Ho to your list of Vietnamese stops. The food was excellent. The service was excellent. I went with my standard of fried spring rolls and pho ga. The spring rolls were fantastic. The fish sauce they came with was very unique. Not as fishy as what I had come to expect but still very very good. The pho ga was great. The broth really stood out to me. A little more oily than other places but it was very very good. The chicken was standard but overall the meal and the experience was very positive. Tay-Ho has an awesome looking bar. I will definitely be back to hang out for a drink or two. If you like Vietnamese you have to try this place. read more

This is an aggregated review based on two visits for lunch here. The building is very nice and modern looking, so they get points for that, especially if you are used to the normal dingy Vietnamese restaurants. The food is pretty good. I ordered the Pork Broken Rice both times. The pork has a great smoky flavor to it. The plate presentation was beautiful the first time, and was lacking the second time. As far as service is concerned, the waiter was great the first time, and lackluster the second time. The point is, please AVOID this place between 12:00 and 2:00, because the servers will be weeded, and your food will take quite a while. If you go outside of these time parameters, you will be treated to a nice lunch! read more

Let me preface this by saying that I eat a lot of pho... Walking into this restaurant, I have to say that its a really impressive place. I've been wanting to try a meal here since they started the renovations to move here. A big, clean open space that has plenty of meals to order from a huge menu. I ordered my usual summer rolls and beef combo bowl of pho. The summer rolls were pretty good, the peanut sauce that comes with it was so-ao... I don't think that I've ever had a bad bowl of pho, including this one. Was it good? Yes... Mind blowing? No. A good broth will make or break this dish. The broth in this meal was ok. The meat in this dish was ok also. Considering that the cuts of meat will vary from restaurant to restaurant depending on their supplier, I thought that this meal was more than satisfying. Came here with a friend and it was my first time here! Food was delicious---I took a chance and ordered something different besides Pho and I don't regret it. I ordered the Tay-ho bun deluxe and as I dug into that meal it was so delicious I took the rest home to finish it the next day. I loved the shrimp, pork, meatballs, noodles and egg roll mixed in. Good food, good service, and priced OK.....They have a lunch menu similar to that of a Noodle and Rice house which I've notice is available during the weekday. During the evenings and weekends they have a little bit more to offer such as clay pot dishes, stir fries, more grilled meat dishes, and specials. The staff are friendly and they get 2 thumbs up from me for knowing how to keep a glass of water filled. The price is a little bit pricier than your typical noodle and rice house but it's understandable because of the quality of the food, the level of service they have, and the maintenance of the restaurant. The decor is nice but it reminds me of a nail salon, also there is too much brown, and there's not much things there that reminds me that I'm at an Asian restaurant. The food is tasty but it won't knock your socks off. Their Pho is a perfect base for many people who like to add extra condiments and herbs to their Pho. Yum! This was my first visit. I stopped in for some takeout at lunch. The restaurant is gorgeous inside. Hands down the nicest Pho place I've been in. The Pork Vermicelli was excellent. The pork was super lean and not fatty like some other places I've been to. Both ladies that helped me were super nice and pleasant. I was a little worried it would be pricey since it was so nice inside but the prices are comparable to other Pho places.
