Ordered one of the special of the days which was the fried flounder. To my surprise, the fish was MASSIVE. Well worth the money (~$25). I wouldn't say it was seasoned much but it's supposed to be eaten with fish sauce anyways. The fish was fried perfectly. The vegetables underneath were broccoli, lettuce, and some pickled daikon and carrot. The broccoli kinda seemed like an afterthought and weren't special. The vegetarian spring rolls had crispy tofu, bean sprouts, and lettuce. The peanut sauce was exactly what I was used to and made me miss home. My friends got the broken rice (com tam) with pork but the portion of meat was really small. I think dishes can be hit or miss since the menu is so extensive. The service was alright. The server checked up on us periodically and I like how they added lemon in the water. There was a mix up when the wrong beer was brought out and there was an awkward silence. Came here last night for dinner. Huge place. I originally came here on Friday night at 10pm, there website said they were open till 12am. When I came in they said they were closed and that kinda ticked me off.. but I decided to come back. Huge place, very spacey. The service was very good. I think there was only one waitress working but it wasn't all that busy for a Sunday night. I ordered the steamed pork dumplings and they were fantastic. Ordered the Pho Tai Nam soup and it was huge. Really good though, meat wasn't too fatty which I like! I like spicy to I usually put all of the toppings in- watch out for the huge jalepeno slices.. I like jalepenos but damn. This thing had my mouth on fire for a good 10 mins straight. Like I could not even continue to eat and it was at the same time that my waitress seemed MIA- I really needed a water refill... other than that the soup was awesome! Great service and the food was good! We always stop in Richmond since it is half way between our old home and new, but this was our first time coming here. Our server answered a bunch of questions and made some recommendations, but you can do without since the menu is so small (I like that). Tay Ho has only been open for a couple of days. Everything is sparkling new. I actually kind of prefer a more Eastern vibe in an Asian restaurant than a Western vibe. Lots of metal, tile and laminate wood gives this place a cold feel both literally and figuratively (I kept my jacket on during my entire visit), but it has some design interest in a minimalist kind of way. Still, not much "personality" or ambiance. The hostess greeted me immediately, sat me in my preferred section, and I was also greeted immediately by my server, Hannah. My spring rolls came out in the blink of an eye. Good thing, 'cause I was hungry! They were okay. Some filler that I've never had in other spring rolls. Rice, perhaps? Mekong's is still the best I've had. The bun vermicelli bowls on the menu included shrimp, pork and other meats, but not shrimp AND pork, which is my favorite. No matter. Hannah said they could accommodate my two-meat bowl request. That, too, came out pretty quickly and was pretty tasty. Not a lot of "salad," though. Generous portion. Average pricing. It's obvious they want to rank high on service and make an impression on their new customers. The owner/manager? came and checked on the customers. I returned to Tay Ho today as it's a short walk down the street from where I live. I went to see if some of the slight pho issues I experienced were any better during a lunch time, and also because I was in the mood for pho. Let me preface this update by saying that Tay Ho's pho isn't bad. I got the Pho Tai and there was plenty of steak in there. There were also a ton of noodles, albeit a bit clumpy. The main problems I experienced last time also were present this time. First, there are way too many onions. I love onions. But the amount of onions in the broth make the soup crunchy. They are thinly sliced onions and easy tangle with the noodles. They don't taste bad, but there are just too many of them. Second, and the bigger offender, is the broth. After having tried about half a dozen pho places within a 5 mile radius of where I live, I have to say that the broth just doesn't live up to some of the contenders. The savory broth at Pho So 1 (either one) outshines Tay Ho. I think that they probably don't let the broth cook with the cow parts as long as they should, or somehow dilute it more than others. It's not a bad broth, it just tastes sweeter and more like a chicken noodle soup or light onion soup. Part of why I love pho is because of the broth, and that hearty beef and onion flavor that it provides, and I just don't get that here. I still like Tay Ho and due to its close proximity I'm sure I'll return here, but if you're in the mood specifically for good pho, I'd recommend taking a drive down the road. If you're after a nice atmosphere with a nice wait staff (really, the wait staff is always super friendly), Tay Ho has you covered. read more

Given how cold it was today, I decided to get some pho (plus, I haven't had it in months). There are many many options when it comes to Vietnamese restaurants in Richmond, so I decided to try someplace new! Tay-Ho is a stand-alone restaurant, as is HUGE. It is very well-decorated, clean, and still looks very new. There were a few other diners during my meal, but the restaurant can accommodate many more. My waitress was extremely friendly throughout the meal and checked on me a couple of times. As for the food, I couldn't pick between pho and bun, so I ordered both. BIG MISTAKE, because the portions were quite large. There is only one size for both categories of dishes, but for under $10, each was what I would call "large." It was quite a struggle for me to finish it all, but I didn't want any leftovers, so I managed to eat everything. In terms of flavors, I picked the fried eggroll bun, which came with three large eggrolls cut in thirds. It was a good dish overall, but I would have liked some more sauce (the volume was great, so the amount of sauce given left the dish a little dry). The pho was piping hot, as it should be, and the broth was decent. It's been so long since I had pho in Richmond that I can't remember how Tay-Ho's compares to other places' pho broths. I definitely would have liked a little more tendon and tripe though! Overall, another solid Vietnamese establishment with large portions but competitive prices. read more

A good place for some quick takeout. It may have been us not understanding the dishes, but found them a bit dull on flavor. Tip: Get the steamed dumplings! Surprisingly large and clean bar. Seemed overall underutilized. Two guys watching a football game while I was there on a Sunday evening. The pork dumplings (steamed) were great! Seemed to be made from scratch, and were tasty/hearty. Wife and I both tried a Bun-Vermicelli bowl (B7 & B11)after being drawn by all of the veggies that came with. We were wondering what the heck when you open the dish, but all the veggies are on the bottom haha. We found the food to be decent quality, and the fish sauce with such was good. The meat with the dishes were solid, especially the barbecue beef. We felt there was not enough sauce or flavor to go with the noodles. I felt the basil was sparse. My wife (not a picky eater) uncharacteristically added some Korean sauce we had in the fridge due to the lack of sauce and flavor. My family and I gathered here to have lunch together for my birthday yesterday. I came across this restaurant after doing some handy dandy Googling to find a place that offered a Vegan Pho. My mother and I ordered the Tay Ho signature cocktail after a recommendation from our server and it was sooo delicious! It had just the right amount of chili peppers to compliment the sweetness of the fresh lemonade. You can also ask them to make it less spicy if you're not big on spice, like my mother. Our server was very patient and knowledgeable of the menu items and cocktails, which was nice as we were first time customers. I ordered the Pho Chay, a veggie and tofu Pho. It was very flavorful with a bit of sweetness to it. The portion size was HUGE. I took the rest to go and ate it the next day twice before finishing the bowl. The menu is reasonably priced and you definitely get the most bang for your buck here! The inside of the restaurant is very nice and modern with plenty of seating and will easily accommodate small or large parties. They also offer lunch specials and happy hour. Tried the Hot & Sour soup for the first time today. Finally, a H&S Soup that's hot enough for me to rave about! It's not "get outta my way, I need a beer" hot, but is hot enough to live up to it's name. As with the Wonton Soup, the H&S Soup (to go) is packaged in two separate Styrofoam cups. The cup marked "S2" contains the darker soup base, with meat, mushrooms, tofu, etc. The second cup, marked "C1," contains a clear broth with a few solids such as scallions. I'm so glad I tried the C1 (Broken Rice / Grilled Pork Barbecue, $8.95). It's very good, leaning slightly toward the sweet side. I'm sure to repeat this dish in the future. Compared to the pho places in New York, Tay-Ho is extremely clean and well kept. Our server, Erin, was very friendly and checked up on us multiple times which was reassuring. Food was served piping hot and full of flavor. I went for my first time on Sunday and returned on Tuesday. I had the P5 Sunday - it had tripe - was so good I was left in a literal food high. Returned Tuesday to have the p7 with brisket and Omg! The brisket was tender and had bits of fat whose flavor seeped into the broth and that just melted in your mouth. So, so good. Oh and I'm a stickler for sweet tea and let me tell you...the sweet tea was perfect too! Our waiter was helpful with menu tips and was very attentive - there was never an empty glass on out table. The space is bright and airy and I swear you could eat off the floors it was so clean. Prices were very reasonable considering the portions. Between two of us, there were three apps, 2 non alcoholic drinks and 2 bowls of pho and we left paying less than $60! This was on a Saturday about 1pm. Upon entering, the place was beautiful and super clean. I expected this since the place was recently opened for business. There is a nice bar and the decor is pleasing. There are many windows so the natural lights really light up the place. Service: As I sat down, I didn't get waited on for 15 minutes. I wasn't the only one either. I notice many people who entered, didn't get greeted immediately. I saw a few crowds just standing near the door waiting. They really need a dedicated host. The servers are friendly but seem to have too much fun with each other and not attentive enough to the customers. My server did not come to check up on me. She only came to take my order, deliver my food, and of course, the bill. I talked to the table next to me, who had a different server. They also commented on how slow the servers are. I think it has to do with how the place is laid out. There are too many high walls that hide the other sections of seating. With this blocking your view, you will have a hard time finding your server. The food. Crispy spring rolls - a little tasteless and the dipping fish sauce was a little bland. Need more garlic and maybe some garnish would be nice. Fresh spring rolls - the shrimp were small but plenty. Tay Ho is another solid addition to the bustling Vietnamese dining scene in RVA. Housed in a clean and modern (albeit sterile) location right off of broad street, Tay Ho brings Pho to the west-end / short pump set. I visited for lunch and employed my standard operating procedure for testing out a new Vietnamese place; order crispy spring rolls and Pho Ga. The spring rolls were fast, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The Pho Ga had a very flavorful (though slightly oily) broth and included high-quality chicken that was only marred by being slightly overcooked. Nothing unpredictable, but all well executed. All in all I had a great dining experience! I would certainly lean towards Tay Ho if I were going for dinner rather than lunch, or looking for a place with a full bar - a well stocked one, at that. Not to mention, Tay Ho has a west end polish to it that makes it ideal for first time Vietnamese diners. For my tastes, Tay Ho doesn't quite compare to Pho Tay Do in all its quirky glory, but I'm hoping it will prove to be a gateway drug for scores of future Pho addicts!!! read more

This might just be my new favorite spot for Vietnamese! The restaurant itself is brand new, beautiful and spotless! We decided to come here because a while back we were exploring Tan A Plaza (an asian grocery store nearby) and they have a minimum of what you can put on your card. We were about a dollar short on cash and the cashier said don't worry about it! Bring it next time or better yet, visit her restaurant Tay -o down Broad street a ways. We thought that was so sweet so we did both (: Our server/hostess was amazingly attentive and must have filled the water glasses on our table at least ten times. I was a little wary when we walked in because the place is huge and there were only about two tables seated. I think it's because it was a rainy Tuesday though to be honest. We started off as usual with Josh ordering fresh spring rolls and myself ordering fried. We switched one and one and Holy. Crap. These were the best rolls I've ever had. First of all, they were huge, wrapped beautifully and SO fresh. Just delicious. I was so pleased. I ordered Pho Ga (chicken) with no onions and it was so good. It tasted like it had a dash of cinnamon or allspice in it which I loved. Instead of the "mystery meat" broth flavor that you get a many junky Vietnamese places, this one tasted like the most unique combination of spices. It also had so much white meat chicken in it that I had to take half the bowl home! The boys got beef and onion broken rice dishes which I also took a bite of. The meat was amazing and usually I do not like beef at Vietnamese places. It was so thin and tender and rolled up around delicate slices of onion. Sounds like it would be a strong flavor but it was so balanced and I had never had a more pleasant texture of steak. The rice was so short grained that it was almost like cous cous (yum) and it cam with tons of accompaniments like fish sauce, salad, and a cup of delicious broth. Everything wrapped up nicely when our waitress asked if we would fill out survey cards because her boss really likes to know how we customers like the food and atmosphere. This was long winded but I would absolutely say you need to check this place out. I was so pleased and I will be back again in the near future for sure. Try this place! It's worth it. I give it a 3.5-4 out of 5 Since I moved to the West End, I've always wanted to try this place. It seemed as if the construction would last forever. Well, it was worth the wait. The interior is much nicer than any Vietnamese restaurant I've seen. I was impressed. As soon as I walked in though, it was like a heat wave. They had the heat cranked up very high. (I read in a previous review that it was too cold in there, but this time, it was very very very warm) The service was great, our server wasn't too familiar with the menu, but at the same time, this restaurant has only been open for a few days. The menu wasn't as big as I would have hoped it would be, don't get me wrong if you like Vietnamese food, you'll like this place. One huge, major, problem with the menu is that there are not enough vegetarian options. I counted 3 items that were vegetarian friendly. Most Vietnamese restaurants have a whole section dedicated to vegetarian dishes and this restaurant did not. (This is the reason why I took off a star) Additionally, I think they should have boba drinks as well, but that isn't as important as vegetarian options. Been open for about 1-2 months now in the nearer West End. Probably the most modern/nice interior for a Vietnamese restaurant in the area (haven't tried any place on the South Side). There is a bar side with a big TV and a more quiet sit down side. Pretty good food. I can't say any of the restaurants have blown me away but most are "pretty good". Pho So 1 is still my favorite pho spot. Tried the pho here, along with com thit nuong (the broken rice with pork), the cha gio (crispy rolls), and a thit kho (the clay pot pork). The thit nuong and the thit kho were excellent. The pho and cha gio were pretty decent, but not my favorite. The servers are nice and most are not Vietnamese (just a note). The restaurant opens fairly late until 10pm and the parking lot doesn't have giant potholes. Good food, good hours, good prices, ok location. read more

I've enjoyed everything I've gotten from this restaurant. I'm most especially a fan of the Vermicelli noodle bowls with pork and spring rolls, but I must admit I agonize over which appetizer I'll get, or whether I'll abandon a favorite for a soothing, herbaceous broth based dish. The menu is pretty standard when compared to other local Vietnamese restaurant offerings. Some standouts include the platters, which are great for sharing, generous portions for their delicious apps (the buns, rocket shrimp, and yellow crepe especially!), and most surprising, a seafood pho, which is not something I am used to seeing on a lot of pho menus. I appreciate the time they take to keep everything clean--from the menus, to the dining room, to the bathrooms--everything was so clean and spotless. Staff is friendly and helpful in making recommendations. They move seamlessly to keep tables stocked on everything from water, to pho herbs and veg, to sauces--and that's without prompting from the customer.
