UPDATE: Fifteen minutes after I posted the review below, Tayloe Glass responded to my concerns and straightened out the situation. It was a combination of bad luck and a comedy of errors. The technician has already visited and the actual repair is being addressed. We all have bad days now and then. All is well. ---------- Earlier: I'm extremely frustrated. Tayloe Glass scheduled a 9 am appointment at my home today. When they hadn't arrived by 10 am, I called to confirm that they had us on the schedule. The person I spoke with said he'd reach out to the technician and let me know. At 11:30, no word from Tayloe. Called again and told they pulled the wrong work order/that the truck broke down but would be here in 20 minutes. It's 2:30 pm. No word, no show. All I want is a REALISTIC timeframe of when to expect them -- or if they needed to cancel. I've wasted the whole day waiting at home. This company has great ratings. I cannot comment on the quality of their work, however their communication with me has been atrocious. read more

I have an old bay window that required removal of old glazing and installation of new caulking. Tayloe's price was much higher than my other quotes but the owner knew exactly what was required when I spoke with him. For this reason I chose to hire this company. I understood there would be glass breakage in the process of the glaze removal. Because Tayloe understood the job requirement I did not squabble with their pricing. The day the job was to be performed the owner left the job site. The worker that remained removed the old glazing. Upon the return of the owner the installation of caulking was done very quickly. I figured they knew what they were doing. Tayloe was paid and they left the site quickly. After allowing time 2+ weeks for the caulk to cure the painter came. He immediately pointed out the poor quality of work (in his opinion). Some corners were not filled and there was one pain of glass that was completely missed. My bad for not checking thoroughly prior to paying for the service. To Tayloe's credit they did return to look at the job, then returned once again, this time with a different guy to correct the job. I don't like to give reviews like this and felt fortunate to have found someone that knew what the job required. This is an older home and I like to work with companies that I can rely on. However after this experience I will not recommend or use Tayloe glass again. I feel this company was capable of doing a much better job but perhaps don't take pride in their work?? This is a frt bay window. I could have pointed out to all the neighbors (as referral) how pleased I was. However this was not the case and for this reason I will not recommend or use this company again. read more

This place is amazing. My neighbor fell off a ladder into a large front glass window on her porch, breaking he window and suffering a long, deep gash in her arm. She was taken to the hospital. Meanwhile, there were huge shards of sharp glass and shattered glass everywhere on the porch, porch steps and sidewalk. Fearing that someone else would get hurt, we called Tayloe for her. In 1-2 hours, Tayloe had the glass replaced, broken shards and pieces all cleaned up and the windows washed into the bargain. When my neighbor arrived home with bandaged arm from the hospital, it looked like it had never happened. Bravo, Tayloe! read more

After breaking the pane on one of my double hung windows, I took it to Tayloe to be repaired since it was nearby. They ordered the glass, and it was ready a week later. When I got the window back I couldn't believe how awful it looked. The sash looked like it had been taken apart by an angry bear .. it was bent and mangled, the corners didn't match up, and some seams had 1/4" gaps. Their solution was just to caulk the crap out of it, with the least amount of attention to detail as possible. The caulking was done so poorly it looks like my toddler did it. The window looks far worse now after having taken it to Tayloe, I'm in the process of ordering a new sash from the manufacturer - after having thrown away money at Tayloe. They might know how to cut glass, but taking apart a window and putting it back together seems to be beyond their skill set. read more

We have a 120+ year old home with many original windows. We had 2 windows with cracked glass (thanks to our dog and our son-both are fine, thank goodness!) and we also had a pane of glass fall out of a frame and a storm window that needed to be replaced. We were nervous about having people come into the home during this pandemic, but they showed up promptly wearing masks and gloves and replaced our broken windows and a cracked window frame quickly and for a reasonable price. When you own an old house there's always a project that is just too ambitious to take on yourself and you're not quite sure who you need to fix it - all I can say is that if has anything to do with glass, call Tayloe! The double-hung kitchen window in my 1916 house with the original, wavy glass had lost almost all the window putty - the stuff that holds the window in the frame - and I knew it had to be repaired before winter. Called Tayloe and they were able to take care of it while I was at work (I removed the storm windows and screen so they could access the window). Konrad and Mike came out, gave me a price over the phone, and it was so reasonable that I told them to go ahead. They were literally done in 15 minutes, and even cleaned the windows for me. I broke my dual-layer thermal window in October trying to smash a fly (don't ask!). At first I thought, "crap, i need a brand-new window that could cost me hundreds!" Then I discovered Tayloe Glass. The store is a little hard to find. It's located just east of Ridgeland, south of the El tracks, an unassuming storefront. Inside, it's basically a shopfloor with a couple of desks and a cash register. Nothing fancy. I told them what happened and without hesitation they told me it could be fixed. They also gave me a great tip on removing my window unit. Later I brought the broken window back to them for measurement, paid a deposit, brought the window home so I wouldn't freeze at night :) After two weeks (instead of 5 biz-days as they had told me), the new double-pane glass was ready, so I took the still-battered window back to their store, and a few hours later it was all done! The glue they used was a little pungent for my nose, but the smell was gone after it's dried out. The whole thing cost me a little over $60. Needless to say I'll have a very, very warm holiday season. read more

When my front door glass broke in my Oak Park home in the Historical District, I knew to call Tayloe Glass. As a lifer in Oak Park I always try and keep my business here and support small businesses. My door glass broke late Friday night so Saturday morning I called Tayloe. The gentleman that took the call was very nice and said they were very busy and backed up, that they probably could not come out until Wednesday. I understood and just asked for advice how I could keep the class safe until they were able to come out, as the very thick old class shattered in large sharp pieces but did not fall out of window. He said he would call me back. I did not expect someone to come out within 1 hour that I called to come out to look at job and give free estimate. John gave me a very good price, much lower than I expected and was nice enough to remove the very sharp glass pieces for me, even though he was coming back to install the window. I also have had Tayloe install another window and make custom glass table tops and dresser tops over 10 years ago which are absolutely gorgeous. As John was leaving he mentioned he was the owner! How could he expect me to be there when I'm two hours away? If you're from out of town and you want a window guy, I would not recommend this company. They know their stuff and did a good job on my glass and mirror replacement. But they have to come out twice. The workers they sent first time messed up part of the job and there were some frustrations going back and forth with the owner on the phone and nothing happened. I finally went to the shop and made an appointment to get it fixed. The guy who came out was very good and straightened out everything. From all the conversations I had with different people, I think three people were involved in the work and the communication was lacking between parties. Nobody seems to know the whole story, so what happened was unclear and responsibilities fell through. But the owner is easy to work with in person and is willing to make things right. The business operation needs to be improved but good overall. Bottom line is I will go back to them for future repairs. read more

They are a local, non-chain business. When you need glass, you call Tayloe. I am a long-time Oak Park homeowner and I don't remember all the times I have called them. I do know they made the complex glass tops for the wood furniture (made by an Oak Park craftsman) in our bedroom. Most recently they installed a replacement piece of insulted glass in a casement window. I called them, they came out promptly, did a quick and efficient job, were very tidy and charged me a very fair price. read more
