Tea Cup Cafe looked like a cute neighborhood place, but unfortunately, my friend and I were disappointed by how sweet the things we got were. We got the shaved ice, a dish anyone who knows me knows I love, with the red syrup, and it was so disgustingly sweet. The toppings of pudding, grass jelly, and lychee jelly were solid, but not enough to salvage the entire dish. Between the two of us, we didn't even come close to finishing it. My friend also got a lychee tea, which was also a little too sweet, although not as disgustingly sweet as the shaved ice. My friend also ended up throwing it out, and we hate wasting food. Wanted a nice cup of cold refreshing Thai Iced Tea and this was the place to get me some after a long hot humid day. There were a couple of Thai restaurant around this street. Need sweet treats and drinks. The Tea Cup Cafe is a quaint small eatery. It was pretty warm inside even with all the windows open. They had fans blasting but it was still too hot for me after walking through the area looking for lunch and my sugar fix. They serve all kinds of drinks and asked if you want bubbles with it. Decided not to go for the bubbles this time. Large Thai Ice Tea was $3.75 and gave me that kick I need to get through the rest of the day. Hung up at the wall was a collection of Furbie dolls which was kind of cool and made the place warm and fuzzy. Contemporary Chairs and small tables which made if feel like a little cafe. Solid place to chill on a nice summer day and enjoy some fresh desserts! The space is open air, with dark wooden accents and bar seating that lay out to the neighboring Thai restaurants. Service is quick and prompt, and menus are hand drawn on the side of the restaurant. Although they serve their fair share of dinner and lunch items, we went straight for dessert. The large bingsoo comes with ALL the toppings listed, which includes taro, red bean, sweet corn, and grass jelly. Be ready to share; it comfortably feeds 3-4 people. They flavor it heavily with "red" or "green" syrup, which tastes as non-descript as it sounds. The ice itself was irregularly shaved. The better of the two would definitely be the honey toast; each piece of freshly toasted white bread was laiden with honey and chocolate syrup to give a satisfyingly warm and sweet crunchy bite. Fresh bananas, blueberries, and almond flakes sprinkled our plate- whipped cream and ice cream are also there for accompaniment. In all, a decent place to share cheap desserts in the Elmhurst area. I really wanted to like this place, but the owner is rude and respectful. The first time I went with a friend and got slushies and dessert. After 1 hour we told us we had been there too long, even though there were still empty table. I figured maybe he was having a bad day. I went back a week later by myself, I had biked from Brooklyn and was starving, so ordered a chicken larb. Chicken larb is lightly grilled minced chicken, onion, in a lime juice chili sauce and mint. When it came out it was fried chicken with onion and chili sauce. I mentioned that's not what normally larb looked like, and the waitress just shrugged, said Fried chicken larb (not a thing btw) and walked away. At that point I was absolutely starving, and anything was better than nothing. I also have a lot of friends who work in kitchens, so I rarely send back food, because I know what happened when... The waitress came by again 10 mins later to refill my water and I mentioned again that this is not what the larb was like when I went to Laos. She said, we're out of minced chicken. WHY COULDN'T YOU HAVE SAID THAT BEFORE I ORDERED? They literally waited until I was half way through eating before saying that. I would have just ordered something else. So at the end of the meal, I paid, and then went to talk to the owner. He wasn't there as far as I could see, so I gave her a tip and said- I know this isn't your fault but it's not cool to try and trick me into thinking fried chicken larb is a thing because you guys ran out of minced chicken. Then the owner came out, and was upset I was talking to her, so I readdressed him, and told him exactly the same thing, and all he did was YELL at me for talking to her not him. I said didn't see you, and this is still not acceptable- I still paid her AND gave her a tip because it wasn't her fault and he just kept yelling at me until I left. So unless you want to be treated like an idiot, tricked into some fake Asian dish because they don't think you're smart enough to know the different, yelled at, and harassed out after 1 hour, don't ever go here. He didn't once apologize for not telling me the minced chicken was out, or say anything to make up for it. If you would like Fried Chicken Larb, I would recommend KFC, they do a much better job and yell at you less. read more

I only tried one thing here, their Shaved Ice. That is all you have to say to order it. It comes with everything that they can find in the back of their counter! I counted 10 different items in my bowl. The cost is only $5. I will be back for more shaved ice this summer! read more

They have a big black board hanging up on the right side wall of their menu, which they offered a good amount of food and drinks. I ordered the banana chocolate boba because the mix really stuck out and you dont see a drink like that often. My friend ordered a thai tea. The banana chocolate was good. They had my previous review removed. So I'm writing it again. The quality of food from this restaurant went downhill after Covid. I've been coming to this place since I moved to NY back in 2014 when they only sell deserts. They used to make the best shaved ice in town but it's not the same lately. They now have a minimum per customer and force customers to order more. The waitresses there hate their job. The owner's daughter or niece is a stuck up. Everytime I pass by this place, they're usually packed! They have seating inside and outside. The place is cozy and very family friendly as I've seen people sitting inside with their dogs! They have a lot of decorations - my favorite is the Polaroid photos of customers on the wall! You can get one too! The employees are very welcoming and attentive. The menu is somewhat confusing because they have a regular menu for their hot foods and a dessert menu with an extensive drink selection and pictures of everything else. They don't list the desserts so you just kind of look at the photos until you see which one you want. I got their shaved ice, toasted bread with condensed milk, and I believe a milo milkshake. Everything was sweet and delicious! The shaved ice had so many ingredients like grapes, red bean, popping jelly, and more! The bread was chewy and soft and just adding condensed milk on top made it such a simple dessert. The milo drink tasted like nesquick chocolate milk but the powder on top was not mixed in and could potentially choke you as it's very dry like cinnamon. Food tastes always good but there was one waitress from thanksgiving 2022 was super rude and I didn't like her service so I tipped $3 so she aggressively asked me to tip her 18% even though her service was horrible and nightmare which made me extremely uncomfortable. The reason she forced me to tip more and was rude to me so I gave 1 star to this cafe. This business will fail because of this unpleasant waitress. Be careful when you hire a waitress. read more

I came here at 10:15pm on a Sunday night as a spur of the moment, treat yourself second dinner. I got a Tom Yum Noodle Soup, Ovaltine Volcano Slush, Toast with Pandan Custard and a bubble milk tea for the BF (not pictured). The total came to $21 before tip! Now can I just say WOW. The ovaltine volcano reminded me of the drinks I used to get back when I would go back to Malaysia to visit family; not too sweet, perfectly cold, good ovaltine powder ratio to give it that gritty/chewy texture. Ugh amazing. And it's huge, for $5 you def get your money's worth The toast was thick and well buttered, personally I like my bread more toasted but my BF thought it was great! The custard comes in a separate cup like a dipping sauce. It's mixed with evaporated milk so it has an ideal consistency for dipping. It's not overly sweet but extra creamy. The savoriness of the buttered bread combines well with the sweetness of the custard. The Tom Yum noodle soup comes in two sizes, we got the medium (2nd dinner remember?) and it was perfect. The noodles were thick and glassy, absorbed the soup well. The broth was rich and flavorful, super spicy and sour. There was ground pork, fried pork skin, imitation crab meat, pork chunks, bean sprouts and some form of green vegetable (pretty sure it was chinese broccoli) SO GOOD, especially since we had the ovaltine volcano to balance the heat. So glad they added food dishes at this cute little Thai cafe. The food was very traditional, written in both Thai and English side by side. A total of about 10-15 dishes on the menu but everything looked super delicious and SPICY! Had the pleasure of trying their fish curry with fishball and pork blood as well as their Tom yum noodle soup. The flavors were perfectly rounded (reminded me of my recent trip to Phuket). I've paid visits more times than I can count on both hands, and consistently find myself ordering the iced matcha latte every single time. The atmosphere is pleasant and comfortable, having wooden stools and small tables good for small groups or solo if you're just heading out for a quick sugar fix. The food / drinks here are so sweet. It's a cute cafe with an extensive menu of Thai food and desserts, and my friend and I came to try out their pandan toast. Since we'd been eating all day, I also asked for a coffee with some sugar. The toast came out and it was your classic Japanese sliced bread that you dip into condensed milk with matcha. It's an easy dish and also incredibly sweet. While the bread is light, I couldn't finish my half of the toast for fear of overdoing my sugar intake. My black coffee with sugar was also WAY too sweet, like they added a tablespoon of sugar or something. If I came back, I might want to try one of their noodles, but I feel like their desserts are not particularly distinctive and I'm afraid I'll get diabetes. read more

Their Shaved Ice "with everything" is only $5 and is best for 2 to share. This place is really cozy and heartwarming. I walked in around 10pm and got a pandan crepe with ice cream. The crepe was sooooo good. It comes with almond Flakes on top, which are delicious, but if you're allergic, remember to ask for it without! The man at the counter took my order right away and was super attentive and kind to us the whole time. The best thing we got was the Thai bubble tea slush though--seriously the best boba!! I can't wait to come back here like...every day. They have savory noodle dishes and lots of dessert.
