My eyes lit up when I saw the menu. The owners are from Tainan, Taiwan which is often consider the culinary capital of Taiwan with many iconic traditional dishes and flavors. The restaurant is spacious but it does not have many table seatings (3-5 tables?). When we came it wasn't busy so we got a spot but we did see many people coming in for their takeout orders. The oldies they play at the restaurant take me back to my childhood. The place is structured very interestingly where it's an open kitchen so you can actually easily see how they prep the food in the back. We ordered: - oyster omelette pancake - mung wort kueh (4 pieces) - danzai noodle - mixed spice platter The oyster omelette was the highlight! The bottom is crispy and they use a generous amount of oysters. It's the most authentic oyster pancake I've had in the east coast. Alot of other "Taiwanese spots" don't make it correctly. I also love the mung wort kueh (hard to find places that sell this) - it's a fun snack to take to go. It's a savory mochi bun with shredded radish as the main ingredient. The danzai noodle is an iconic dish from Tainan. Its main star consists of the one shrimp and the marinated ground braised pork. Although I would prefer the dry version but they serve the soup version here. The broth tastes very clear and clean, doesn't feel like it's dosed with salt and MSG. We got the mixed platter - an iconic street food in Tainan is 滷味 (Lou Wei) which is consist of different ingredients tossed and braised in a soy-based spice sauce. They have a nice selection of Lou Wei options and the platter we got had pork belly, duck neck, tofu skin, and lotus roots. The spicy duck neck can be intimidating for those that have never had it but it is fun to eat. There are so many items on there that I can't wait to try. For first timer, definitely get the oyster pancake and Luroufan! I can't wait to come back and try more of the traditional Taiwanese dishes. They also have frozen dumplings that you can buy to go. 50 pieces for $28-$30 is a pretty good price!

It was getting late and this place was convenient and open and had seemed to have good ratings on Google. So we had to try it out. It was a cold date. There was no one in the restaurant, but the staff was very friendly and it felt like a private event just for ourselves. We got a traditional Taiwanese appetizer and some spicy sautéed fish in a sizzling beef and pepper platter. All we're good, especially the fish definitely worth trying. There are other authentic Taiwanese style food that wants to say for next time.

The service only got worse when it came time to pay. Because they were unhappy with the tip, the server said, "If you don't have money, don't come back next time," "You're so young but have such a bad attitude," and even told us to "Get out." We also ordered the pork intestine and blood stew, but it was almost entirely pickled vegetables. There were barely any pork intestines or blood in the dish, which was very disappointing. No customer deserves to be treated with this level of disrespect. It's one thing if the food doesn't meet expectations, but insulting customers and telling them not to come back because they "can't afford it" is completely unacceptable. The flavor of this dish was quite sweet, with warm spices and the richness of soy sauce. I loved the texture of the wheat gluten, it's meaty and chewy and pairs well with the accompanying shiitake mushrooms. The lion's head meatballs were extremely tender and soft, coated in a sweet and savory glaze and served with steamed bok choy. The Shanghainese flavor profile is sweeter and less oily than other Chinese food, and I found my dishes to be rich without being overly fatty or heavy. The service here is extremely friendly and the prices are very reasonable. I will likely return soon.

Lao Bei Fang is the longest-standing, and likely the only establishment in that category. My staples are always their hand-pulled noodle soup (can't go wrong with either beef or lamb) and potstickers--always the first to get wiped out when I bring them to a potluck. The food was extremely filling and affordable when I was a college student, and now, as a grown-ass adult, it's nostalgic, unpretentious, still extremely filling and affordable in a dining scene where presentation and paying high prices seem to be the norm.
