I am from Pittsburgh and had our car breakdown when travelling with my son. I called 4 places and no one would see me. I called J&L and even though they were completely booked, they squeezed me in because we would have been stranded. Not only did they repair my car the same day, they charged me less than they had estimated. They also took the time to personally drive me to my son's baseball game about 3 miles away and then pick both of us up and drive us back to the shop. 6 months later and my car is still running perfectly. The owner and his right hand man have restored my faith in humanity. They could have charged me 4 times as much and I would not have blinked. I took my truck to them for a diagnosis. They kept it for a couple days and when I got it back there was damage to the front bumper. Who ever drove it misjudged the distance between the front bumper and whatever they rubbed it against. There were no dents but the paint was rubbed off down to the plastic. So I've ordered touch-up paint, primer, etc. to repair it. I didn't say anything because I just didn't feel like the hassle of them denying it and arguing back and forth. If there had been body damage, that would have been different. I just won't go back, definitely won't recommend them, and will warn others to beware. read more

First off, I've never had my car worked on at J&L. However, I just called them and John picked up the phone and started helping me diagnose the problem I'm having with my bmw 435. Normally you call a repair shop, they rush you through your info and tell you to bring it into their shop so they can take a look. Not John. John took the time to look up my car info, asked me questions about the oil leak, and then asked me when I bought it and warranty related questions. Verbatim "I hate to turn away business, but if you bought a certified pre-owned vehicle, it should be covered," John said. Not only did He give me an honest answer and advice, he told me he'd call the dealership I bought it from and figure out if it's covered under warranty. I'm blown away. I've never experienced customer service and this type of honesty ever when it comes to a vehicle repair. I'm waiting to hear back about the warranty coverage, but I will say that if I do need the work done, or future work done, I will use J&L. read more

But one day, another, nicer, sweeter dragon came along (J&L Automotive) and rescue princess (I'm a princess now for some reason) from the other dragons. My 19 year old son has an old Jaguar and another Euro repair shop referred us to J&L (because they didn't do Jag repairs) in October 2017. J&L has done numerous repairs and diagnostics on it since and, when he wrecked it recently, the owner gave him practical advice (i.e., that J&L "could" fix it, but it's not worth the money that my son would have to put into it; just take the money we'd pay J&L and apply it towards another used car). J&L likely could've made an easy $1,500-$2,000 in repairs on the 2004 Jag, but it did what was right by my son and I'm thankful for that. My son bought a used car this week and will be taking it to J&L because they didn't just repair his previous car, but they developed a trusting relationship with him (and me, too). read more

I have been going to J&L for about 20 years. John is fantastic and there is no one else I trust more than John. He is honest, trustworthy and he truly cares about his clients. I have definitely had mechanics try to take advantage of me in the past, and in my younger years when I didn't have much money, he was always gracious with his advice on what truly needed to be fixed, what could wait, etc. He has given me advice over the years regarding what cars to buy, what to stay away from (from a mechanic's perspective) and has gone out of his way on several occasions to ensure I was taken care of. Seriously the best automotive repair shop around. They can service anything including Audi, BMW, Mini, etc. This owner is honest to a "T"! We though our brakes were going bad so we went here to save money vs the Audi dealer. J&L could have made money off us and still left us happy by saving us money, but instead he said "You don't need brakes", which no other place had said. He even proved it to us and saved us hundreds of dollars during an especially tight financial time in our family. Shops like this simply do not exist anymore. I recently moved to the area and I've been looking to buy a car. Had a vehicle taken for a used car inspection to Tim and the boys at J&L. He told me the charge would be $85 because they take the time to check out everything and then make a recommendation. He told me that if the verdict was, "No", that he wouldn't charge me. Well, he checked out the car, felt it was not in my best interest to buy and then told me there would be no charge. An honest broker who clearly had his customer's best interest in mine. I work with a "car junkie" who I always asked for my car questions. I said "Well, what happens when you have your own car issues? Where do you take it?" He said "J&L Automotive". That was more than 12 years ago and I have been going ever since. Gone are the days of untrustworthy, shyster mechanics who are just guessing what's wrong with your vehicle. The customer service model that John employs is what other places should aspire to. The have good communication on all fronts and keep the customer informed throughout the process. A good example of the customer service I have experienced is when I brought my car to the dealership because I thought my warranty would cover it. The dealer said "No, it's not covered and you need to fix this and replace that...yadda yadda, $1400". I took it to J&L and he said the dealership was full of it...and for $130 I was out the door that day. J&L will not upsell you on things that don't need fixing. That, to me, is an honest mechanic. Their website claims to have open appointments on Saturdays. I made one online using their website. I was sent a confirmation email. I showed up on Saturday at my scheduled appointment window. They were closed. Doors locked. Only after checking the yelp page afterward, did I realize they aren't even open on Saturdays and Sundays. I probably should have just called to set up the appointment instead of using their website. But, they shouldn't even offer the option to make appointments online, if it's not truly a service they have. I wasted an entire weekend, as a result. It's unfortunate for me because I hear their service is top notch and sadly i wasn't even given the opportunity to try it out. read more

Joined Yelp today just so I could post a review for J&L Automotive. Needless to say, I have never had a more positive experience at a repair shop. I made an appointment for a Used Car Inspection, and when the guy selling the car was late, the technicians at J&L all agreed to stay past closing time to take a look at the car for me. They were forthright about their inspection, and even test-drove the vehicle for me. Because they found some significant issues with the car right away, the inspection was free of charge. These guys bent over backwards to help me, and didn't even charge me for it. The nicest, most considerate mechanics I've ever encountered. J&L is an excellent place if your vehicles need repairs or servicing. Having three different older vehicles, it's nice to find a single shop capable of diagnosing and fixing issues with a Porsche, BMW, and a Saab. (All very old with high mileage; collectively worth about $10K, lol). I had previously brought my Saab to the "premier" Saab repair shop in the southeast for many years, and after much time and $$s, took it to John and Tim at J&L. They were able to figure out two major issues that had plagued me and the previous shop for years. The. It's was reasonable, but more important, the car runs great! read more

I've used J&L for years and have always found them to be quick, honest and very high quality. I'd strongly recommend them for both minor and major repairs. They talked us out of buying a used car because after the inspection they performed, they felt the car was likely to be problematic in the next 25k miles due to age and mileage. My daughter just started driving and she had a dash light come on, so I told her to call John at J&L. He walked her thru a few steps over the phone and eased her concern of the issue likely being small and that it was OK to drive the car, but to bring it by for further inspection. I asked the J&L personnel (via e-mail) for a price estimate for some maintenance work on my car, provided that I supply the materials (thus I would only be paying for labor). My e-mail was responded with a one sentence snide remark insinuating that I should just do the work myself. The response e-mail could have gave cited a company policy for not using customer materials or given an argument to why it would be better to buy the materials from them (cheaper than retail, better quality, etc.), however neither was given. I would have let the remark go (since I know that it was given in jest) if they would have given me a.) a reason not to supply my own materials or b.) given me a quote for the labor costs. Not to be put off by a little jab, I responded to the snide e-mail eluding that I would do the work myself if I was able to (I live in an apartment complex that does not allow its tenants to do auto work, so I cannot do any auto work beyond changing air filters). They did not respond to my response e-mail. I would have given this company a 1-star review, however I do not think that's fair since they have not worked on any of my vehicle's yet (due to them instating that anyone who requests things they do not see as necessary, whether they understand the situation or not, as stupid). Due to my poor experiences with them thus far, I will not do business with them as I do not think they want my business and I do not feel that I should have to pay someone who makes inaccurate, rude, and premature judgements about my situation. read more

They don't overcharge for work or parts, and they don't try to sell you stuff you don't need. John saved me $800 once when a dealership tried to make me get a new PCM. UPDATE: Tim called me to make it right but then John the owner called me later and left a NASTY voicemail basically calling me a liar. I have already told the friend who recommended these people to me what happened and I can't tell you how many times he has apologized. Also beware, he bad mouths bad reviewers in his shop. He did it while I was standing there in front of him as a new customer, before things went bad. I joined Yelp just to warn people about this. For the record, I'm really hoping I can come back and update this review with more positive information. J&L was recommended to me by someone I trust so I was thrilled to find someone that would hopefully do great work on my car. John was perfectly nice in all my interactions prior to getting up there. And I will give him that he didn't charge me for all the diagnostic work he and his guys performed. I originally dropped off my car on Wednesday night so they would have it Thursday morning. When I called him to see what was going on with my car, he said he was just getting the paperwork together right then and would call me back but he said "it's serious" so, of course, I start panicking. He didn't call me back for almost 2 hours so *I* called him. He tells me that it'll be around $800 for the part to fix my car. I'm not thrilled but I own a BMW so I knew it wouldn't be cheap. I said "OK" and asked him to look at the service light that was on. I managed to get a ride from work up to his shop. When I get there, the part is suddenly $1300. He said he didn't realize that the place he got the part from would only do both sides of this particular fix, not just one. He claims to have worked on BMWs for a long long time so I'm skeptical that he couldn't give me the right price but I figure he's human and is entitled to a mistake. Then he starts giving me this long list of things that is wrong with my car. Even to the point of telling me a light bulb is out (there are no lights out in my car) and that the outside temp gage isn't working (it is). He even told me I paid too much for my car. With the long list of problems he gave me, it seems unlikely I could have driven my car for over a year and not noticed something. But when I expressed some doubts he said it could be that the codes weren't cleared when the car was fixed previously. I asked specifically if the car would pass an emissions test, he said it would. He started looking up parts and telling me their prices while I was standing there but then I had to leave (it was the middle of the work day). He specifically said that 2 parts were $300 together and one part was $200. When he called me later, somehow, the parts and labor were over $1500. I was so stunned I didn't know what to think but I told him I didn't have that (which I had already told him). When I asked around, I was told this was too much for used parts and labor. When John sent me the order, the parts were over $700. That's very different from $500. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on being honest but decided to shop around so I didn't take my car back right away. The "service engine soon" light came back on before i even made it home that day which means it would have failed an emissions test. I took it to my normal car place and they were able to give me an exact cause without all the rigamarole I received at J&L. My normal car place isn't even a specialty place! Then, when I went to put my dog in the car a couple of days later, I noticed that the strap to his seat had very clearly been cut. My dog is a chihuahua so he couldn't have chewed it and it was fine before I took it there. I had noticed that the seat wasn't up like it normally was, I just figured that they had unhooked it (it's REALLY EASY AND OBVIOUS how to unhook this little seat) but when I saw that the strap had been cut (rendering the seat completely useless) I called and left a voice mail telling them that I would not be returning. I cannot abide needless damage to personal property, especially since they didn't tell me it had happened when I picked the car up. I really tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. I wanted to believe that he was honest, especially since he touted his Angie's List rating while I was there. I don't know if he thought I was young or thought I was female or thought I was dumb, but I don't like that he seemed ready to take advantage of my willingness to trust him. Or that he lets his guys damage personal property without a thought or at least owning up to it. read more

Outstanding service, very affordable and the most ethical auto repair company that I have ever received. Unlike every other shop, they rode with me in my car beforehand and explained the issues that I was having. They took my to the garage to show me the issue, let me feel the part that was vibrating and told me why it was happening. Afterwards, they took the damaged part along with a new replacement part to show that they were using the requested part (which they had given me a few choices with guidance as to the differences) and point out the difference. They were the third garage I went to and unlike the others they didn't try to add anything else on that wasn't needed and best of all they had the lowest price. They have been around for over 50 years so they're doing something right! I found them on Angies List which had the highest rating they give which I can see why the earned that.
