The fish was wonderful! Crispy and hot! We are tartar people so ordered it on the side. (they messed up and drenched one of our parties fish with tartar sauce, so they redid it and put it on the side. No problem!) Let me tell you the onion rings are wonderful as well! You should upgrade to them!! The fries are pretty standard fries... they did say they could do some different things with the fries and it sounded like those would be good to taste. And the coleslaw is just OK Most of the employees seemed to be pretty nice. However, they were training a girl at the front and she was getting frustrated I believe. She really snapped and was very crabby with a customer. I felt sorry for the lady trying to buy a gift card. No one apologized to the lady or seemed to try to tell the new employee that that wasn't OK. A little later they brought the new employee back toward the bathrooms to help her learn how to check it out and she was pretty crabby then. The long fish filet is perfectly cooked and flakey on a hot dog bun, the fries remind you of a drive in, the Cole slaw is great, perfect tartar, it's a great meal. I also love the fried clam dinner, clam strips with all the same fixings as the fried fish on a similar platter. Passionate review incoming: The New England Clam Chowder is to die for. Are you looking for some of the BEST clam chowder in the area, look no further. Okay, maybe it's not the best (for everyone), or fanciest, but it's damn good. I generally have high standards for food, and Ted's is just so nostalgic, it's infamous and deserves the title. Ted's NE clam chowder has no frills, it's not packed with seafood, but it is a chronic craving for me. It's THICC, creamy, has a strong onion flavor, packed with clams, house made everyday. Driving home yo Delmar, I get a craving...for something more than the big box restaurants of Glenmont. I'm on 787, thinking I can get my BF to stop at Ted's in Guilderland on his way over. The tartar sauce, cocktail sauce and even very interesting catsup seem all homemade(maybe there's a catsup shortage right now?) All great. I guess you can say I grew up on Ted's Fish Fry. In the 50s, my parents would bring the family to the only Ted's, at that time in Watervliet (probably known as Port Schuyler to the locals). Yes, there were other places that also sold fish fries, and we frequented all of them, but today Ted's is the only one of the "originals" that still is standing. During those early days there was nowhere to sit inside a building. These were drive-up stands that took your order and delivered your food at the same window. You then either ate your food in your car or sat at one of the few picnic tables nearby. That probably also explains why Ted's and the other fish fry businesses were only open during the Summer months. Not unlike the ice cream stands of today. Today's visit was unplanned. Being somewhat in the neighborhood, with two other alternatives having fallen through, I took the opportunity to follow through on a desire to re-experience Ted's onion rings with the plan to compare them with other businesses that are high on my preference list. As usual, there was a line of customers at the window placing their orders. True to fashion, the line moved very quickly as the most senior worker, who I've probably seen for more than 50 years, took the orders and barked them out to the line cooks. Mine was rather simple: one chili, small ring. The "one chili" was understood to mean a Fish Fry with chili on top ($4.85) and the "small ring" ensured that I got a small portion of Onion Rings ($2.90) instead of the larger portion if the boss had simply said "rings!" As you can see, these people are experienced professionals! Typical to our area, the long piece of breaded fried fish was served on a hot dog roll. The fish was nice and hot, flaky with a crispy coating and on a fresh roll. The coating might have actually been a bit too crispy. The chili is only on the portion of the fish that fits in the roll. If you want chili, or some other sauce, for the ends of the fish that extend well beyond the roll, you can ask for extra sauce since there are no self-service stations that have sauce. The onion rings were not overly greasy with just a light breaded coating partially flaking off portions of the medium-wide, thin rings. I've decided that they are OK, but I believe I prefer the ones sold at either Country Drive-In or Harbor House. Those are thicker and wider. read more

The fish fry is something I don't think I will ever understand. Don't get me wrong, I love fried fish, but I don't understand the need for a boring, bland hot dog roll. And the weird chili sauce (ketchup and sweet relish?). My downstate childhood might be showing with a statement like that, hah. I will say that the serving of fish is quite large and served fresh and piping hot. It's a good value in my opinion. I usually just pick the bun off. Ted's loses a star for not having a sauce bar though. I assume it's this way so condiments aren't wasted but sometimes you just want to serve yourself some ketchup for your fries. Or some tarter sauce when you realize the chili sauce isn't your thing. Bob and Ron's in Albany is great in this regard. I saw they had mini hot dogs on the menu and had to try their take on a 518 specialty. They were good but I found the meat sauce was bland and didn't have enough bite. The highlight of the meal was the homemade onion rings, which were crumbly, not too greasy and just good. I do like the ambiance of this place. I felt like I was stepping back in time, and you can tell it's an institution in Watervliet. It was jam packed on the Friday evening at 6pm when we dropped in, with mostly people in the 55+ category. The fish is fresh and delicious and they fry with canola oil so it doesn't feel heavy or greasy at all. One thing I will note is that the fish comes with this red chili splashed all over it. The chili is ok, but I think they put too much on. Same with the tartar sauce if you order it that way. So I recommend that however you order your fish, get your condiments on the side. They also have chicken fingers, soup, burgers and dogs, and other fried seafood like clams and oysters. I literally live less than 400 yards from this place and this is only my second time coming here because my first time (2 years ago) was such a bad experience that I promised myself I'd never go back. Of all the Ted's locations, this is definitely my favorite. I ate there just the other day, and it was amazing. We ordered a few cheeseburgers, fries, onion rings, and calamari. Now I don't like fish fry much, but the rest of their offerings, I love. My favorite part of my dining experience there, is listening to them call back the order. Most of the time the person who takes your order will talk in what I call the "Ted's Lingo". For instance, a fish fry = a fry, a french fry = a french, onion rings = o ring, or sometimes just ring. It just makes it that much more fun when you are ordering, especially once you learn the lingo too! Now keep in mind, it's a fish fry, so everything is greasy, so if grease scares you, don't bother coming here. But, if grease is ok with you, you'll be please, I'm sure.
