Here is the low-down: Good: -Charcoal grilled everything (they also have burgers and chicken) - Aunt Hattie's buns for the dogs (is a personal pref) - several types of homemade dipping sauces you won't find anywhere else to dip the fries in...some also go good on your dog - Lots of fresh toppings to choose from (lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, relish, etc.) - Large dining area which was well kept - The bathrooms were clean and smelled good - Love how well preserved the building and signage are well kept (60's-70's era) Bad: - While the meats are cooked to order and come out hot and fresh, my fries tastes like they had been under a heat lamp for a while and they were flimsy and cool. For a hotdog place, this is pretty good! The charcoal grilled dogs were what made the hit dogs great in my opinion. My boyfriend got the regular dog and the bratwurst dog, and I got two regular dogs and a small french fry (and a side of ranch). This did seem a little pricey to us (the total came out to be ~$18.50). While the hotdog meat didn't blow us away (it was almost like buying regular old hotdogs at Walmart), again, the charcoaling of it was what made the meal good. What I loved most about the meal was definitely the french fries. Something about them was just right! I wish I could have tried the onion rings, as they looked pretty good. Being our first times there, the ordering process was kind of confusing to us. After we paid, we weren't told what we were supposed to do (ex. Wait there, go sit down and they'll bring the food over, etc.) So we elected to go grab a bench and wait. Turns out we were supposed to wait up there to then tell them what toppings we wanted on the hotdog! Teds was a good choice for lunch. The line was nearly out the door and that told me it had to be good. Wanting to try different places than I get a home we thought this was a relatively cheap place. The foot long hot dog was cooked to perfection and the ability to create your toppings was a nice touch. Onion rings were pricey and flavorless unless you dipped them in a dipping sauce. Born and raised a short bike ride from the original Ted's location on Sheridan Drive in Tonawanda, NY, and 15 years since I last ate at Ted's, so this visit was a real treat. My footlong with Ted's sauce and extra pickles--severely charred, exactly as I ordered--was everything I'd been longing for all those years. Sahlen's dogs still have the same great snap in every bite as I remember. Her two regular dogs with ketchup, yellow mustard and sauerkraut were immensely satisfying, and too much food for her. More for me. Ted's homemade onion rings remain the very best, and the fries with malt vinegar did not disappoint. The only thing missing were the little wooden forks they used to include way back when. Loganberry drink will never change, and it never should. The only disappointment was the Weber's horseradish mustard (another great Buffalo, NY delicacy) is on display but only for sale--they wouldn't put it on our dogs. Magical! I recently had two colleagues in town who have connections to Buffalo, N.Y. and they said, "OMG, there's a Ted's in Tempe!" Funnily enough, I didn't really know what that meant but based on their enthusiasm, I was determined to go try it with them! The story gets weirder. When we arrive and I see the sign, I feel something. I've been here before...long ago (I lived in Tempe a few years as a kid when my Mom worked at ASU). Was it possible that this was the same location and as an eight-year-old, I had gone to Ted's? My gut is sure of it. To be fair, I'm not the biggest hot dog aficionado. They're fine but it's not something that I long for. My colleague said the burgers are just as good. We ended up splitting a footlong and I got a cheeseburger. The gentleman at the grill was named Blaine. He had wonderful energy. We start talking to him. How long has this location been in Tempe? 39 years. Yes, I have been here (I just aged myself but whatev!). He tells us that Ted's is expanding to Gilbert soon. He has worked here the entire time. Legend! A few minutes later, other guests get in line behind us (as you've probably guessed, you order at the counter and customize along the way). A couple at the end of the line starts talking to themselves and asking how many years has this been here, why have they never been here, etc. I pipe in, "39 years!" The other guest tells us that she has grown up on Ted's and that Blaine has been part of her life since she was a child. Her father's tradition was every Saturday they would go to Ted's and have a hot dog. It was just heartwarming. The guest at the end of the line started furiously snapping photos because this place just has a vibe, a history, and authenticity. You know it when you know it! When my colleagues and I sat down to finally eat, we loved it. They said it tastes exactly like the Ted's in Buffalo! The distinct taste of charcoal-grilled meat just can't be faked. As I kind of expected, I didn't love the hot dog but I'm not a hot dog kind of guy. The burger? Heaven! Just simple with a homemade taste. I also ordered the mac n' cheese which was OK, but the onion rings (strings?) were addicting. We finished our meal in about two minutes flat because it was just tasty. Only downside I see for in-store dining? No booze. The store is covered in historical photos that take you on a journey from Ted's in New York to Ted's in Tempe. The retro, yesteryear feeling is so genuine and inspiring. There was just so much about this experience that was perfect. Good food (did I mention the milkshake?!), legendary (literally!) service, stories from back in the day, and warm fuzzies all around. I can't necessarily call Ted's Hot dogs a hidden gem but if you've ever driven by and never given it consideration, please stop in. You won't regret it! read more

I'm originally from Buffalo, NY where Ted's originated. I used to eat there at least 2x a month. I recently went to Phoenix and went out of my way to stop here. I was not disappointed. You can't beat Ted's charcoal broiled dogs. Everything is so good, it's really hard to decide what to order; the dogs or burgers, brats - all exceptional. Excellent milk shakes as well. Don't let the long line to order discourage you. The long line is a great indication of how good the food is. The staff is very efficient at moving the line faster than I had anticipated. Wish Ted's would come down south as I live in Western North Carolina and don't get to Buffalo as much as I used to. I do feel like it's a little confusing if you've never been here or only come once a decade on where and exactly how to order, but service was excellent from all employees I encountered. The restaurant was clean, and someone came out very quickly to clean more when guests left. My favorite is that the hotdogs and / or brats are BBQd and not boiled or steamed. What happened?!? Tonight had been a year since my last visit. The jumbo all beef hot dogs, my favorite since the early 1990s, taste completely different. They are definitely the all beef (not the pork, etc.) but they do not taste good. Can we all be honest for a minute? It's a hot dog. Like, a good hot dog...but still just a hot dog. Lol! People getting all foodie like on hot dogs. I'll be honest, they're not my thing. You could give me a Teds hot dog and two generic hot dogs, one cooked by my husband and one by my 5 year old and I wouldn't know the difference. The place is dirty. And overcrowded. But again it's a hot dog place so this might be the motif they go for. I'm giving 4 stars because if you want a hot dog, you'll get one here. Their fries are good.
