Amazing burger....I definitely recommend!!!! I have no complaints, only compliments ...really tasty...it even tasted clean....well it's steamed lol

The famous Ted's Steamed Burgers! I wanted to try them since moving to Meriden but they weren't open when I previously tried to go. Finally had the chance to get takeout one day and went for it. Parking is a bit inconvenient as it's limited street parking. The interior is likewise small and limited seating. Thankfully I went to enjoy it at home. The burger was tasty. I didn't love the bread choice because it can get soggy and break down easily, but it was a good burger.

Come here for the food and bucket list check off. The staff was friendly and service was quick. Overall ambiance of the establishment is a small counter and tight dining area. What it lacks for in that, is made up for with the quality of the burger. If you only come here once you have to have the steamed hamburger. I decided to go with the BBQ Bacon and it was great. Amazing flavor and the cheese melted and infused with everything made it a tasty mess. Onion rings were good and I had to polish it off with a milk shake. Probably not the healthiest choice you will ever make, but you aren't coming here because you wanted a salad.

My husband saw this place featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri and really wanted to try the "steamed cheeseburgers" from here. No parking lot, but there's plenty of free street parking. They have 3 booths for indoor seating and 4 picnic tables for outdoor seating, depending on your preference. We got the double steamed cheeseburgers and 2 regular steamed cheeseburgers (1 plain and the other with toppings). All the food came out fairly quick, and the server always had a smile while taking and giving us our order. The burgers were served on vienna rolls instead of your traditional burger bun, which made it taste even better topped with swiss? cheese and your choice of toppings. They were moist and tasty with more than enough melted cheese to add an additional flavor profile. However, I thought the patty could be bigger/ flattened since there were more cheese and bread than meat. We've never had steamed burgers before, but these were definitely better (maybe healthier) than your typical Five Guys or fast food burgers. If you're traveling to Connecticut or in the area, try Ted's :)

This was a Burger Connoisseur's bucket list item of mine for years: Steamed Hamburgers in Connecticut! I had no idea what to expect other than that the burgers would be completely different than any I'd ever had before. That was absolutely the truth! Steamed hamburgers are like none I've ever had before, and not likely since. Imagine a well cooked hamburger with no loss of flavor or a charred or burnt taste. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the steaming doesn't take away from the experience of tasting the meat. It makes the experience a little more messy because there's a lot more moisture. In no way did it make the experience less enjoyable, and actually made it unique. So much so that I would by my own "steam chest" to have this as a burger prep option at home. The service was super helpful and friendly, and very proud of the unique contribution of Connecticut to the Hamburger World! If you're heading to Boston, the Cape, Maine, etc, add Meriden to your stops and hit up Ted's for steamed hamburgers!

Well....I really wanted to love this place especially because I pass by it almost everyday. Unfortunately, I was very underwhelmed to say the least. We walked in and I am one for customer service...almost non-existent. The young lady said, "hello do you know what you want to order?" I responded, no, this is our first time and she handed me a menu. What I don't understand is WHY they have a menu with absolutely no pricing?! I could see that online but in-person is just silly. There are a couple booths for those who want to dine-in. We ordered 1 double cheeseburger (l,t,o,m,p and bacon) - $15.85! No fries, just the burger. I said to my husband, this burger must be amazing at that price. Ted's is known for 'steamed burgers'. We saw a man pressing ground beef into a little pans and popping them in a steamer box. No seasoning. No salt and pepper. And you could taste that when eating it. The bread was an untoasted Portuguese roll. We received our order pretty quick - 7 mins tops. It reminded me of my childhood when my mom would make homemade burgers in a pan - Except she seasoned the meat. Honestly, the best part of the burger was the stringy gooey cheese. Almost like the cheese in a mozzarella stick. I feel bad for having to leave this low review but I must be honest with my Yelp community.

A central CT icon, Ted's original burger and the shop that serves it has not changed much even if the menu has expanded quite a bit in recent years. Fresh toppings, fresh roll and that melted gooey cheese makes this a must try burger. They now offer a multitude of sides, chicken sandwiches, etc. I always go with my standard - cheeseburger with sautéed onions and mushrooms and home fries with cheese. Walking in is like stepping back in time. The TV's on the wall are the only real give away. Service is always great. It's a no frills lunch and I hope it always stays that way.

Stopped by for lunch to go. Cheeseburger with lettuce onion and mayo. It was delicious. The burger to bun ratio loss way better than the pictures look. The flavor is just beef with a little salty from the melted cheese.

Ted's is Truth. I love everything about this spot. Got an egg nog milkshake the day after Christmas. Drinking a cake is cool and the cheeseburger is a loveburger.

Ummmm...Hmmmm.... Have wanted to check out Ted's steamed burgers for years after first seeing them on the Food Network and reading about them in Road Food. On this particular trip, we planned our drive around a stop at Ted's and.... the burgers were ok. They were much smaller than the bun and cooked in an almost big meatball shape, with a dry crumbly texture. Staff was super friendly though and the small metal steaming drawers of meat and cheese were VERY cool!

The price for takeout for these (3) things were on the high side to not include a side salad. With that said, we were aware that those weren't included as it wasnt listed on their online ordering. We just figured the portion for both Entrees were likely larger and thats why you paid a la carte for the salad. We come back home with the takeout and to our surprise for quite a high price, the portions were small. How small, each meal fit with pasta inside a plastic container, similar to those used for Asian takeout. For any other restaurant that serves Chicken Parmigana, its always been a larger round metal dish with pasta on the side. Typically with 2 pieces of chicken. Putting portion aside as one can argue that we may have been able to find that out before ordering, the (2) entrees were not great. The Chicken Parmigana had one piece of chicken and the chicken was charred, dry, minimal amount of cheese and the both the chicken and pasta itself had a scarce amount of pasta sauce. I found myself having to scrub the side of the dish for any sauce left. The lemon bay chicken was also quite dry and unfortunately the mixture of recip (chicken, pasta and sauce) was quite tasteless. I'm not typically one to leave a 1 or 2 star reviews often, as I'd rather just not go again to the place where I had said experience but between the quality of food, price and portion, this place falls into a bit of an exception for me. Look, I've eaten at many places, if your portions are going to small for the price (and without sides), then the quality needs to EXCEED the excepted regional standard for that dish to justify that reasoning. This experience did not do that, instead we are left with half of take home container of each meal that we will have to toss in trash for Fathers Day.

It is way more spacious than their previous location and nicely decorated. We sat in a nice Modular Half Moon Restaurant Sofa in the back. Felt like I was looking down upon the rest of the guests having dinner. Nice table just felt a bit like we were on display however I still enjoyed as I love the style of these tables. Our waiter I think was new and definitely did not know wine. We asked for a bottle of the Merlot, which he pronounced back to us "Mer-LOT." I couldn't help but chuckle a bit when he left the table. Someone else came and opened the wine for us and when our main server came to check on us, he grazed the side of my glass and freaked, telling us the glasses are $500 each and if he breaks one, it comes out of his paycheck. Ummm what? This stuff we probably should not know! Again, I think he was new, probably not having much experience as a waiter. He definitely needs training on how to pronounce wine! Moving on to the cheese, they used to give you a cheese board with a few different cheeses. It's a bit different now. They give you whipped butter, a few pieces of cheese (last night was Cheddar), roasted red peppers, and whipped goat cheese with a touch of honey on top and some bread. Not sure if this changes/rotates at their new location. We chose not to do the raw bar or appetizer courses (fyi those are extra). For my salad, I chose the Signature Salad (forgot to take a picture of this course). This is where things went downhill for me. I asked for no apples. He said no problem. He did not tell us they ran out of the dried cranberries and caramelized nuts which to me make the whole salad. I used to love this salad at the old location. So, when telling us the specials he did say he "thinks" they had one salmon entree left, but had to check. Restaurants run out of things, and I get it, but take that salad off the menu if you're out of 2 ingredients and the customer asks for no apples. All that we got on our salads was lettuce, gorgonzola and fried potato skins. I feel like I had French fries on top of lettuce. It was awful. Also, I'm the only one that asked for no apples and my boyfriend got the same salad I got with only potato skins and lettuce and gorgonzola so clearly they were running out of things. We then saw other customers getting the same salad lacking main ingredients. For my entree, I got the Heavenly, which was supposed to have a lobster sauce. I couldn't put my finger on what the flavor of the sauce was. It was strange. It wasn't bad, it just didn't really go with the lobster. It had a brown tint to it. The manager came over after we ate and asked us how things were, and I told him about the salad and asked what the flavor in the sauce was. He told us a crab style sauce which made sense. Boyfriend had the filet. He said it wasn't Ruth's Chris good, but it was good. Mashed potatoes were very bland. Presentation was pretty bad. Dessert they get from a third party. I had the flourless chocolate cake which was the best part of the meal. Desserts are where they have improved with the new location. They used to give you petit fours style desserts, and now they give you full size desserts. It was delicious. I really want to like this place more because I like the concept of what they do. I guess on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays the chef creates whatever he'd like for guests for $25 a head. Mystery meals. The manager said that's where the name "Adventures in Eating" comes from. Again, we had come here previously, and I had a problem the last time with the Branzino where the waitress didn't tell me it came as the whole fish. Servers are friendly here, they just aren't top notch. Food is ok.

We couldn't wait to come back. Several months later on our second visit, we arrived well before their posted closing time - 9pm. It was around 7:45pm, the lights were on, but the door was locked and the staff seemed to be cleaning up. One of them looked up, saw us standing at the door and then went back to doing whatever they were doing without bothering to engage with us. It was incredibly frustrating having driven almost an hour with the expectation of getting some delicious food, only to be ignored by staff at a time when they were supposed to be open. Many months later (giving them the benefit of the doubt that the early closure on our last visit was a fluke) we made the trip up again. We arrived to find the place was locked up and dark - again during a time when they were supposed to be open. Today I was with some friends and we stopped to have lunch at Smokin' With Chris next door. During our meal, I mentioned my past experiences with The Lab, but also said how good the food was. So, we walked over to look at the menu and possibly pick up dinner for later that evening. It was around 1:30pm, the lights were off and the door was locked. I double-checked their website, and they were supposed to be open at 11:30am. While I was on my phone, an employee came up, unlocked the door, turned on the lights and began his shift - two full hours after they were supposed to be open! WTF?! Apparently, the owners of The Lab seem to believe that their food is so epic that they can just operate their business whenever they like regardless of their posted hours. This total lack of consideration for their customers is beyond insulting. It's really too bad because the food is good, but not good enough to offset the unprofessional manner the owners are running (or in this case, not running) this place. There are way too many other great dining options available nearby that actually adhere to their posted hours to put up with this nonsense.

As I walked through the front doors, I noticed kegs alongside on the floor. This was kind of a turn off, kind of reminds me of a dive bar. So my mentality kicked in that we were going into a dive bar serving food. I kinda get the sketchy feeling. Once we were seated, and menus placed, we were served iced water A few minutes later, the server came back and took our order. My friend ordered a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, and some string french fries. I ordered the 1/2 smoked chicken, which came with two sides. I chose the rattlesnake beans and the creamy macaroni and cheese. Also include included was cornbread I originally wanted the street corn, as a side, but it was not available. Our lunches came quick, and my friend only ate half the french fries and cheeseburger, as she wasn't really turned on by them. The smoked chicken was fairly dry, with a very interesting smoked flavor to it that I can't put my finger on. I eat about 1/3 of it. Left the rest on the plate. The creamy macaroni and cheese was out of bounds top-notch. I could've eaten this all day. The rattlesnake rice and beans were just OK. The rice was cooked pretty good, and was seasoned well. The beans had a weird taste. Now thinking of this side dish, I was hoping for raw onions to be on top, but they were nowhere to be found. It'll be nice if there was chopped raw onions to go with this. The cornbread was delicious. I ate about half of it. It was a generous slice. The vibe just didn't hit it for me. Restrooms were clean. The restaurant was clean; the silverware clean. I don't know. It just was like a funky type layout and those beer kegs kinda sent the wrong tone to me as a guest. Lunch for the two of us was $40 and change and I left a $10 tip. We didn't have any cocktails or mock tails, we didn't have coffee or dessert either. From what I understand, the owner was near the exit when we left, not even a smile or a thank you for coming in...

Chicken was a little dry, but overall very good meal. My boyfriend ordered the bourbon steak tips. He enjoyed it as well. I would definitely go back. I would love to order the wings, but we weren't that hungry and we wanted to enjoy the meal so we didn't order any apps. Next time!

Overall experience wasn't the best but definitely worth another chance.
