Was in the area for breakfast & was excited to taste their renowned pasteis de nata (coconut custards cups) & hoard some home. Street parking can be a headache but worth the walk if you park far! Cute little cafe on a busy Main Street of Portuguese businesses. It's a bit busy for breakfast & service timing could be a bit slow as they take their time with each customer which I, however, appreciate. But patience should be practiced, good food should not be rushed! Lots of sweet goodies, all I know are those flipping AAAAAmazing coco custard cups, but we tried a few new things that were delish: not too sweet & flavorful like the coconut bread & roscas minhotas (which has a nutty cinnamon stuffing!) and a strawberry sponge roll. Seems like one soup offered for the day, todays was veggie & was very generous in size, tasty, cozy & not salty (how I like it!)... very affordable, as well, for 3 soups the total cost for it was $7.50- $2.50 each The cappuccino looked lovely, a bit bold & strong for my taste but still good. My best friend and I went to the bakery after a long drive and were treated very poorly and were made to feel unwelcome. When we ordered, we asked for the beef empanadas and they didn't have them (strike 1). Then my best friend asked for bolos de bacalhau and they said they only had 2. My friend repeated what she said to make sure he her heard right. The older lady at the register then bucked at my friend and yelled at him (strike 2). When we sat down to eat our food, it was cold, ICE COLD (strike 3). We left and came back to get a refund, and we were asked why. My friend explained the food was cold and we didn't want it. The staff proceeded to have a 10 min huddle and made us wait to get the refund. We were met with more hostility and questioned on why after we had already explained. The same lady said she needed a receipt to give the refund. We didn't have the receipt. My friend explained since we were just there they can look it up in the computer. After going back and forth for 10 minutes the cashier finally gave my friend his money back. We've never had such a bad experience and we were disgusted with the poor treatment we received when we did nothing wrong. We will not go back. read more

Wow, just wow.... this bakery is fantastic. Newark/Harrison has a very large population of Portuguese and with their residence, they bring the delicious food of their home country. It was a bitter cold day and I decided to stop by Teixeira's. I ordered a cup of coffee (very good) and three pasteis de nata....then three more... then a half dozen more to bring home. They're so creamy, light, perfectly darkened on the top. I will definitely get some for every party from now on, as well as other baked good. You might think I'm crazy, but we came to this place four times in about a week. And each of the times we came it surely was worth it. I had something different every time. Never had any sort of Portuguese pastry and then I moved to this neighborhood. The pasties de nata are AMAZING. I've had them at a couple of other bakeries around here. All were good but I think teixeira's were slightly better- more eggy, more flaky. There is a line on Saturday mornings which is when I last went there. Come during odd hours (for example, I've been there at like 1 on Sunday and it wasn't bad) and you won't have to wait too much. The coffee is strong and pretty good too. This place reminds me of Riviera Bakery. I grew up going there and was completely heartbroken when I heard it closed down. Someone suggested this bakery instead and I LOVE it. It's amazing and I think it's completely affordable. I definitely recommend getting a Ham and Swiss Sandwich on Portuguese bread with panini press. If anyone wants a Shrimp Croquettes, ask for a Rissois De Camarao and I promise you won't regret it. Their beef empanadas are also very very tasty! I don't see any pictures on here regarding prices, so I'll attach my receipt so everyone can get a sense for prices. I was able to find street parking after I drove around a little bit. Bakery has a modernized signs outside. Has tables inside for people who wanna enjoy coffee and baked goods. Display shelf were filled with yummy goods. They had short line to order, I had to get dozen of egg tarts and beef empanadas. A delicious bakery that is very fairly priced. I am a big fan of baked goods and bake shops. In the New York area there are numerous excellent Italian and French bakeries. This is an excellent Portugese bakery. Not being tremendously familiar with Portugese baked goods, I expected a level of sweetness consistent with the aforementioned cuisines. I was pleasantly surprised by the more subtle sweetness in these baked goods. The doughs were light and airy, with the sweetness only being some of the pleasure, with the other characteristics of the baked goods holding court as well. However, do not go directly to the baked goods. First make a pit stop and chow down on a few empanadas. I had both the beef and chicken. These were the best empanadas I have ever eaten. The dough was once again a masterpiece, both airy and not over baked. Expect a bit of a language barrier, as it is an authentic Portugese bakery. Also, expect genuine friendliness. There are no prices posted, but I thought the prices were definitely fair. The setting is nothing fancy, but we were here to enjoy the food and that the bakery delivered! read more

Maybe it's because I'm so used to the Portuguese egg tarts from Xin Fa Bakery, but I just found Teixeira's sub par. Although the crust was nice and crispy, it was a tad salty which I didn't like (my friend did not taste the salt but I'm just super sensitive to it). The custard was ok. Once again not on par with what I'm used to. If you're a fan of Xin Fa and are used to their piping hot made to order Portuguese egg tarts you may not like this place. The egg tarts aren't what brought my rating down. Oh no! It was the extremely watered down iced coffee. It tasted more like coffee flavored water. The egg tarts themselves I would rate a 3 out of 5. If you're wondering why you don't see any pictures of menus for this bakery, it's because there is no menu and they don't have any prices written up on their baked goods. That said, their Portuguese egg tarts are currently 6 for $7 or 12 for $13.99. They're absolutely delicious and not too sweet. They don't hold up too well, so eat them fresh. My parents bought some during the day and by nighttime, the crust was already soggy and kinda chewy. So I highly recommend heating them up in the oven to get a crispier crust. read more

I had trouble finding the place! With luggage in tow, I was so, so close but kept going thanks to an evil GPS. The pale color design and nondescript exterior did not grab my eye. Fortunately, I was able to then get a ride right on the block of the bakery or else heat prostration would have gotten the best of me. Inside is another story. Airy and clean with lots of room. Pronounce it "teh shay ra" and the ladies at the bakeries will be impressed by your Portuguese savvy! The place has very decorative folk tiles and lots of bakery options! The pastel de nata has layers of filo pastry crust which makes it super crispy and the custard filling is very refined, creamy and smooth! It was light and didn't taste heavy! Best eaten on the same day. The caramelization was a pretty golden brown on this batch and I have seen some other bakeries have scorched black spots which is also the norm.The lenzinhos napkin cake was super eggy and dusted with sugar, with a soft egg yolk cream. There were so many breads and pastries my eyes couldn't take it all in. I wanted to try it all! At the time I went there was thankfully no line, but I could see why there would be lines of people.
