This review is long overdue... The food that they serve here will be some of the best tasting, authentic Mexican food that you have had. The warm chips with cheese and beans served on top is not only tasty, but the fresh green and red salsas are very good and little on the hot side. You have to try the guacamole. Absolutely the best that I've ever had. The rice served has a unique flavor and texture that you more than likely never have experienced anywhere else. Everything from the soups, to enchiladas, tacos, and burritos are a tough choice to decide. They're all extremely made well. This would have been a 4 star review if it wasn't for the fact that I've had a few times when I didn't receive what I ordered. I received what they thought I ordered. But not what I ordered. The latest example of this happened when I simply asked for a "fried" pork tostada... The woman taking the order repeated the order a couple times.. That should have tipped me off that i was about to have another mystery meal... A good meal. But who knows what will arrive at the table.. Well, out comes the woman with my tostada(s)... Yes, I know that I only ordered "a" tostada. This woman showed up with a plate of 5 pork tostadas instead of "a" fried pork tostada.. I think that it was the Three Stooges or Laurel and Hardy who did the "Who's on first" bit... Well, that's what it turned into while explaining exactly what I asked for. The more I said fried, the more she said 5.... I'll be back for another meal here but the last visit kinda soured me on how my time and money is spent there. I found this little Mexican joint in yet another strip mall. One of my favorite finds to date. The huevos ___________ meal deals are pretty unbelievable and delicious. For 6$ you get the huevos, the rice, beans, a stack of tortillas and some salad. Plus chips and salsa while you wait. Seriously the quantity of food is enough to feed a small family. The second time I went I had to politely decline the stack of tortillas. The horchatas are okay, but then again I've been spoiled by good horchatas in my youth. Got the torta and taco al pastor this Friday and it was delicious! The taco was authentic- they asked for American or Mexican which Mexican is the authentic one. Can't comment on the American one. This place is incredible. It's Tuesday and I had a pregnancy craving for tacos. I wasn't sure this place still existed since Tejas II, right down the street, apparently closed. My husband took me here, and we had the best guac and pico imaginable. Huge portions. Amazing service. I ordered the taco and chalupa combo. Absolutely delicious. I dined here once awhile ago and came based on my brother's recommendation - he loves this place. I'm a vegan now but was vegetarian at the time. They bring out a plate of tortilla chips with cheese curds and refried beans when you are looking over the menu. I ate the chips that weren't touched by the beans, since refried beans are traditionally cooked in animal lard. They were fresh. The salsa that was paired with this was spicy! But I am a wimp when it comes to spice, lol. For an entree, I got a item from the menu that consisted of mixed veggies upon a tortilla, that I cannot recall the name of. The menu isn't very versatile for non meat eaters. When it came out, I notice there was a small piece of meat on the plate...really turned me off from eating my dish, being a veg. There was a cool drink selection - sodas like Coke but from Mexico, so no high fructose corn syrup, instead it had real sugar which was cool. I got a glass bottle with the words "Sidral Mundet" on it. It was a pretty tasty apple soda. Not very apply/tart, but very sweet. I also ordered horchata after realizing they served it - it was awesome! I don't really like the atmosphere of this place. I'm not one for super up-scale places, but it is pretty...unappealing. There are simple tables and metal chairs, all pretty close together. I didn't like it at all; it just seemed so run-down. There was another large group of people there at the time who made a lot of noise who seemed to be very familiar with the staff. The service itself was pretty friendly. The food was very inexpensive and authentic. Overall, due to the meat contamination, I wouldn't eat here again. If you're a meat eater, I'd try it, but get take-out because the interior is extremely lacking. read more

This little place seems like it would be a nasty hole in the wall if you went strictly on appearances of the shopping center it's located in and that assumption would be dead wrong. It's very colorful and welcoming when you walk in the door. There is also a little Mexican market attached to the restaurant. Their menu is utterly authentic Mexican cuisine and very reasonably priced. I had the chicken enchiladas with mole poblano (there are three sauce choices). The mole was good, not great, but very tasty all the same. The chicken and rice were cooked to absolute perfection. The portions were of normal size. What Sam wrote about the chips still holds true. The salsas are fiery and delicious. This is a little family place, not fine dining but I plan on becoming a frequent visitor so I can work my way through all the lovely dishes on the menu. They seem to also have a number of interesting soups and broths. I have to mention... the floors were so clean I swear you could eat off of them. I mean: CLEAN. I can't actually recall ever being in a restaurant where I said to myself, "Whoa, now THAT is one hell of a polish!" That seemed to be true of the kitchen as well from what I could see. Since the Tejas Grill II down the road is closed temporarily (supposedly) and we love it there we decided to finally try this one with middling results. The entrance is a tiny grocery store jammed full of product with decent sized dining room that could have doubled for a walk in freezer. This was a night that was already in the teens outside so we just kept our jackets on the whole time which was convenient I guess. Again the layout is weird so I was facing in and into the open bathroom door and half the kitchen watching the waitress wash dishes. The tacos at Tejas 2 have always been quite good along as was the rice. I tried the #28 four chicken enchiladas with mole poblano sauce with was half cold. I don't know if the coldness of the place did it or what but if def was a big disappointment. My gf's platter was quite good but I couldn't tell ya what it was (gonna have to wait for her review). Our waitress was the same we have had numerous times at Tejas 2 so it's obvious the same people so I don't know what happened with my meal. If we do get something it will be pickup until the weather warms up but i wouldn't recommend it at this point. read more

I want to like tejas more than I do. I think the food is good, the service can be good, and they occasionally have a nice beer special. Decor is odd as this was a diner recently and they didn't change much. The staff are very nice but I feel like they always are new and aren't sure as to what is going on. Their food is authentic but it is just not spiced well. It's bland. You can ask for extra salsas and spices to jazz it up but it's labor intensive. Not sure how this place has 3 stars... ordered 3 tacos yesterday and the meat was not good in any of the 3. Didn't taste, smell or look good. It was chopped up little bits of fat, gristle, or dried out meat. I picked through it best as I could at first but overall was grossed out and threw the whole box away. read more

Best mexican I've had in south jersey!!!! I was shocked to find chilaquilas on the menu, I ordered them for lunch even though they're really breakfast food. So good. My husband had burritos and they were great too. We also ordered a tamale on the size (it was mole poblano) and I loved it. They also said they would deliver to our house, so we'll be making this place a regular dining spot. This place is no frills so if you're looking for atmosphere go elsewhere. I don't think I'll be hopping in my car to leave Philadelphia to come back here, but I did enjoy the food for what it was. I ordered some Mexican street-style tacos. One of the fried pork variety and one of the spicy pork variety. I thought the food was flavorful. I especially Android tasting my wife's salsa verde enchiladas. However, don't expect fast service and don't expect romantic decor. We came in with a large party, but we were only given a small bowl of nachos. When we asked for another bowl due to the large party size,we were not told that there'd be an upcharge. That might be something to consider. I do recommend that if you choose to visit, that you take the time to visit the grocery store that the restaurant runs. I picked up fresh high quality taco shells, and some spices that I would not be able to fine in my local supermarket. you'll also find some pretty cool chilies on this play as well. read more

I usually don't write reviews as often as I should but I had to hop on here and testify on how DELICIOUS my food was. I'm from LA and I am very particular about my Mexican food. I've been in New Jersey for almost a year and have yet to find a legit spot that reminds me of home. I was reluctant because of the name of this restaurant because I'm thinking "Tex-Mex" ugh. Even when I lived in Texas, there were only a few places I would frequent that was just ok. I ordered the chicken flautas and a chicken tinga taco with cilantro and onion. The flautas were a tad bit over cooked but overall good. The taco was perfect. The meat was spicy enough to add a little more spice (salsa) if need be. I squeezed lime juice and added the fresh avocado from my flautas to the taco. Perfection !!! The red and green salsa is ADDICTING and I want more!! Like today!! read more

So this place really is the definition of a hidden gem, mainly because you would have absolutely no idea it even existed unless you happened to glance over at the faded sign that lists the few remaining businesses in the old Bradlees shopping lot along the White Horse Pike. Now this isn't La Esperanza, but you really can't compare the two, as they are completely different restaurants. What the Tejas Grill does have is delicious food in a casual atmosphere at cheap prices. What more can you really ask for? My friends and I ordered the chorizo quesadillas to start which were absolutelyfreakingincredible and ended up being my favorite thing that I ate on my visit. Oh I also forgot to mention that they serve you complimentary tortilla chips covered in beans and cheese! So that is huge plus in my book. I can scarcely remember what I ordered since I came here almost two months ago now, but I'm pretty sure it was a steak taco which proved to be good, but sorry to say not as good as the steak down at La Esperanza (I mean really what the hell do they do to the steak down there? It is just so unbelievably good!) Anyway my other friend ordered what we described as a mexican egg roll as it consisted of beans, cheese, and I'm pretty sure some kind of meat rolled up in fried dough, which was also very good. We also noticed that some of the other people around us were ordering some kind of drink that looked like a vanilla milkshake. We asked our waitress what exactly it was, and although she never gave us its name, we did end up with a free sample and a list of what the ingredients were. This drink which consisted of rice, condensed milk, nutmeg, and cinnamon, (maybe even banana?), was also super delicious. Finally, we noticed that they have breakfast. Chorizo and eggs anyone? I ordered the Bistec con cebollado and it was delicious! It was served with rice, beans, salad and guacamole. The verde sauce (you have to ask for it if it doesn't automatically come out with the complementary appetizer) was a bit spicy but not overwhelming hot; also very good. My sister ordered the chicken nachos which were very good also. Also, don't get discouraged this place is in a huge plaza that has lost its luster. It's posted next to the local Good Will and is kind of a "Hole in the Wall" joint but worth the time to sit and enjoy good Mexican food. Definitely go and enjoy this place!! read more

We go to Tejas (or order takeout) at least once a month. I love the quiet and casual atmosphere of the restaurant. We always order tacos since they are so cheap and always have so much meat. Our favorite is the Al Pastor taco! However, lately we noticed they haven't put pineapple in the taco which has been disappointing. The complimentary chips and salsa they give you are homemade, spicy, and very tasty. I always insist that we get an order of guac for the table!! read more

Yum! Tejas Grille is in a scary parking lot near the Lindenwold Train station, we ordered Elote and Guacamole to start, both were pretty awesome. I had a cantaloupe agua fresca which was super super sugary but pretty good, it might be nice mixed with alcohol, mint and lots of ice. I had two tacos, one steak and one chorizo, the tortillas were not my favorite but the tacos were fairly good. The restaurant was very clean, and the staff was really nice and accommodating. I did not hear, or see a microwave being used in the cooking process. I would come back for sure, they accepted credit card and a big meal for two with tip was well under $30. read more

On a visit from Texas and was looking for Mexican food. I found this little hidden gem. Although a little on the questionable side for appearance, and location, their food was quite good. I ordered the enchiladas verde and to my suprise the entree was very delicious, especially the chicken with its nice grill seasoning. They enchiladas were not overly cheesy, but had just enought oaxaca that with a touch of guacamole made for a nice meal. It was little difficult to understand the hostess, but they were very cordial and accommodating and we worked our way through my order. Been eating here for awhile, try the #44 chipotle sour cream chicken, it's amazing. It doesn't cost a lot of money to eat well at tejas and that I enjoy. TL;DR: they charged more than the prices reflected on their menu and the food is greasy. The food was okay, except it had a lot of butter and oil. I'm giving such a bad review because they were facetious with their pricing. My boyfriend and I went into the restaurant and ordered off of the menus they had in store. They had us pay for the food after it was done cooking. I found out on my way home that the worker there charged my boyfriend way more than expected, and rationalized it by saying "the menu prices have changed". My boyfriend didn't argue it, but I'm really upset about this. I would've at least appreciated them telling us the price WHEN we ordered. I ordered what should've been $12 max and he ordered what should've been $14 max, yet we ended up paying $40 for an overgreased meal. Also, they gave no silverware and the containers were flimsy. My boyfriend got a huge oil stain in his pants from a hole in the bottom of the container. We might as well have bought from a fast food chain. read more

I so wanted to like this place for what it is, but based on my second visit, I probably will not return often. As others have mentioned, it is not a homely restaurant, but has a cafeteria like feel. The food, evidently microwaved, is not always of such redeeming quality either, and certainly not the best in the world. And when they invariably messed up our order, the waitress, embarrassed, insisted she writes down everything and couldn't possibly make such a mistake. It's okay if she misheard us, but she should have corrected the error right away instead of trying to put any blame back on us. Two or three menu blunders made us wonder if someone else had written the menu, and why it was no longer being adhered to. For instance, the chalupa was served with no cheese, and the salad which is said to accompany entrees is merely a slice of tomato and a slice of lemon on a bed of shredded lettuce, not an actual salad by anyone else's definition. The dressing, optional, is not refrigerated but merely left out in canisters on the counter for days, which I'm guessing is a health hazard. An individual dish of guac can be had for $2 - even though the menu says side order of it costs $4. In this case, I was happy the menu wasn't followed, because otherwise we would have thought we had been taken. read more

I decided to order take out and asked for no cheese. When I arrived my food was ready. However, when I asked to double check about the cheese, I got attitude back. I also noticed that there weren't any beans with my order (beans normally are included with the entrée). So, they spooned some beans into a takeout container and microwaved them. What a microwave is doing in a kitchen where the food is supposed to be made fresh is beyond me. When I got home, I noticed the dinner was not as flavorful as it normally is. To make things worse, the beans that I asked for were sour! I couldn't believe they served me food that had gone bad. It seems that their standards of service and of food quality control are slipping. I hope management sees this and does something to bring their business back where it used to be or better.
