I recently started working at the UMDNJ-SOM/ Kennedy Hospital complex and was looking for a shortcut to get to the PATCO. I walked on well-tread path through the woods which opened into a vast, vacant parking lot. To the right I saw an abandoned Bradlees department store, a Goodwill store, and Tejas Grill. Small, decorated brightly with Mexican traditional clothing, and with Spanish-language TV playing in the background, I felt like I was in Mexico, or at least a very authentic place. The menu is in Spanish and english, and the selection includes the usual, but also many items you don't typically find at a U.S. Mexican restaurant--- soups, huaraches, molcajates and much more.After ordering, the waitress brings a good size bowl of tortilla chips with a nice, light covering of cheese and sauce. On my first lunch trip I ordered two tongue tacos ($2.40 each) and these were really delicious with fresh ingredients. It was pretty satisfying for a lunch. There are about 6 other options for taco fillings. I told a friend, and we went back the hext day---I got the combo($7) which was a taco, a tostado, with beans and rice, and my friend got the taco salad($8). The food is bland and microwaved, and the service is terrible. I thought it had an "authentic" feel as I walked in but it seemed more on the cheap side when I left, probably due to my experience that day. There were two smoke alarms beeping! How do you not notice that and fix it? I know, I know, I should have just walked out because it was like torture. They just seemed oblivious when I mentioned it though. The beans and curds everyone raves about is obviously microwaved. They were fine but nothing to rave about. When I ordered my meal and talked to the waitress, I asked a question about red and green sauce but decided on red. She brought me what I ordered but with green sauce and then had the gall to say that is what I ordered. She just stood there looking at me. My BF said he heard what I ordered and it wasn't what she brought, but again, she stood her ground. Finally I said I was going to leave because I wasn't given what I ordered and therefore won't pay for it. She went back to the kitchen to get another one and brought a plate to take away the wrong one. I guess they will eat it? The menu has incorrect info on it, my chalupa had no cheese (yes, I came with Kevin H.) and you have to ask for the dressing for the "salad" instead of it being given to you. read more

The house margaritas are a little too sweet for my taste, but their guacamole and Mexican style tacos are good!

Delicious authentic mexican food. Might be the best in the south jersey area that i've had. Tasted fresh. Slight downside was place was empty And service was a tad slow. read more

Went in with the family tonight expecting to find the place that use to be there. Went in to go give it a try. Service was slow food was just ok, the little amount that we ate. We did not finish our dinners because when my husband took my son to the bathroom the waiter/cook went in used the restroom and did not wash his hands!!! My girlfriend and I have visited several times and I'm finally writing a review. The food is good and inexpensive. We are not fans of corn tortillas, but they will accommodate you if you ask for flour. Our recommendations include: beef soup, fajita burrito ( they will make it steak if you ask) or huraches. Some dishes like the combo or pork items just don't work. Overall I recommend a visit. The service is hit or miss, but it's an inexpensive byob, so try it and enjoy. read more

I have been going here for many years because the food is really quite good and authentic. However, since some of the older staff has left, I don't think I can continue to go here any longer. The young girls are rude to you, make you feel as if you are annoying them by being there, roll their eyes and just all around make you feel uncomfortable for wanting to eat at their establishment. Just make you feel as if you are inconveniencing them by being there. They would prefer to sit there and eat their own meal while watching TV and playing on their phones. Tejas Grill would really benefit their establishment by getting a more mature staff; just too bad because the food is really good. read more

Had a coupon for Tejas Grill in our Entertainment Book so we decided to give it a try. The decor was very nice and the tables and floor were very clean, which is always nice to walk into. The service was quick and polite and we got a small bowl of chips with beans and cheese along with a couple of different salsas. The food was quick to the table, hot and very good. Food was great. I love the new tejas grill as opposed to the other location in the shopping mall. They have a beautiful bar, tiled floors, and fresh flowers on every table. Service was prompt and the server was pleasant. I Iove the nachos little appetizer they give for free. I had the trio fajitas and it was fabulous and fresh. Jumbo shrimp and very light oil. The guacamole and the green salsa is delicious. My husband got a steak dish in which he thoroughly enjoyed it came with tortillas, rice, and beans. I highly recommend tejas ll when your in the area. We gave this place three tries. 2 out of the three were awful. We brought 4 people with us to dine in the second time- it took 15 minutes to get drinks- food came out randomly like 5-10 minutes apart. Our friends were done their dinner before ours came out. Food was dry and mediocre at best. Staff was slow and not pleasant. First time- food was amazing. Service was fast but they only brought one dinner bc they didn't understand we wanted 2 of the same dishes. Our last and final experience was tonight. We ordered take out- missing an appetizer that we were charged for. Fajitas came with no vegetables. Guacamole was awful and they charged us $13 for it! It was a ton lime juice and avocados. Food is fantastic. The big boy in the back can cook. Now if anyone else is cooking there's a huge drop off...and the service is bottom of the barrel terrible. We've been driving past this place for awhile and finally decided to try it. The exterior is nothing special, just a hole-in-the-wall kind of place. Those places, more often than not have the best food. And that holds true for the Tejas Grill! The interior is colorful and vibrant. Very much a family restaurant. The waitress was friendly and extremely helpful. We were looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant since we have never been and we couldn't have been happier. She made great suggestions and explained a lot of the menu items to us. The guacamole was fresh and delicious. We shared a few plates. Among them, the beef tongue taco (if you've never had beef tongue, you have to try it! It was tender and delicious), carnitas sopes, carnitas enchiladas sopes, a mole tamale, and some others. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The carnitas was so tender and rich. The were some fatty pieces of meat, but being Vietnamese I am used to eating that kind of pork. I enjoyed it, but for someone who is not used to it, it may be a bit of a turn off. I have to say it was authentic and amazing. My husband and I are already planning on coming back soon. Last week I came home from an extensive stay in southern California where I dined on inexpensive authentic mexican food. When I got home I was still craving the delicious cuisine of Mexico. I have always seen Tejas Grill from the outside, and let's just say that Tejas Grill looks pretty bland and dirty from the outside, but after reading the reviews on here I decided to give the place a try. Amazing! Once I stepped inside I was transported back to souther California or Mexico and treated to kind service and delicious food. I purchased a burrito for about seven bucks and the portion size was huge. They're guacamole is delicious too. Before the meal, the restaurant serves a chip plate and it is very delicious. They also serve a wonderful horchata. I really wish I discovered this place like two years ago because it is really wonderful and accessible for a student's wallet. I can't wait to go again! read more
