Think Twice Before Going to a Venture Capital-Backed Dental Practice Like Tend My husband warned me. He said don't go to a place like Tend -- VC-backed, flashy, and designed to upsell you at every turn. I should have listened. I have a fantastic old-school dentist I love and trust. The catch: appointments book out months in advance, and with a jam-packed schedule and a long summer away from the city on the horizon, I simply couldn't get in. So I turned to Tend, lured by their Saturday appointments, slick app, and promises of a modern, patient-friendly experience. What I got was the opposite. From the moment I walked in, it felt less like a dental practice and more like a sales funnel. The very first of three staff members who greeted me said, unprompted: "If the dentist says you can get a cleaning today, you will." I was stunned. I made the appointment for a cleaning. That's it. When I pushed back, she shrugged and said, "Well, most people get cleanings." I explained my situation clearly. After 20 minutes of X-rays, the dentist appeared and announced she had found two cavities -- cavities my longtime dentist has never once identified, despite the fact that I rarely eat sugar and have absolutely no pain. Convenient. Then the hygienist came in, spent another 20 minutes probing my mouth, and declared I needed a deep gum scaling. Fine -- I said I'd schedule that for the fall once I confirmed what insurance would cover. But what about my cleaning today? "I won't clean your teeth," she said flatly. "You need the deep scaling first." I asked why I couldn't have a standard cleaning now and return in the fall for the scaling. She said she didn't have time. I suggested she do whatever she could in 30 minutes. She told me that wouldn't be up to her standards -- and that she had another patient waiting. Her name was Kathy, and her attitude throughout was as unyielding as it was unnecessary. I asked to speak with a manager. I told her I was being refused service and that if I left without a cleaning, I would never come back. Their solution? Have me sign a form stating that I was "refusing" the gum scaling -- making me the difficult one in this scenario -- and then Kathy proceeded to clean my teeth in under 30 minutes. So the time was there all along. I checked out. Not a single word was mentioned about the deep scaling or any follow-up. And those two cavities the dentist was so concerned about? Never brought up again. One more thing: Tend markets heavily on the fact that patients can watch TV and choose their own show during their visit. I was never offered this -- not for the X-rays, not for the cleaning, not at any point. And at checkout, they charged me $29 for X-rays. In decades of dental visits, I have never once been billed separately for X-rays during a routine appointment. Tend is not a dental practice built around patient care. It is a revenue machine wrapped in a pretty app and a modern waiting room. Save yourself the frustration. Find a real dentist, make the appointment months ahead, and wait. Anyone who gives this place a good review is lucky enough to never have had to encounter the chaotic runaround that passes for customer service at tend. This place feels like it is set up to completely frustrate the customer into giving up on resolving whatever issue they may have. In my experience, Tend is a customer service nightmare at best, and is possibly committing billing fraud at worst. I learned that there was an overpayment on my account in December 2025 from a date of service 2 months before. Tend never directly informed me of this and required multiple emails to even acknowledge that there was an overpayment. I requested a refund, at which point I learned there were actually overpayments from 2 dates of service, and 1 of them was paid for on a card I no longer have. The overpayment to the card I don't have access to was allegedly processed right away and no explanation was ever given for why the overpayment wasn't applied to my account instead of silently holding the funds until it was too late for me to get them back. That money is gone now and tend couldn't care any less. But that's not even the worst part. The more recent overpayment is the real doozy. I explicitly requested the refund both orally and in writing in late December when I learned of it, and in the month since then have followed up by phone and email easily over a dozen times. I've had a ticket created and subsequently closed with no resolution. When I send an email, it takes over a week to get a response and the response is completely unhelpful and does nothing to move the issue forward. When I call, whoever answers the phone has no ability to help or transfer me to someone who can help. They always tell me that they're passing it along to an internal team and someone will address it and update me. Literally no one has ever called me back in the past month and certainly no one has come anywhere close to resolving the issue. I've dealt with a lot of billing issues in my love, but I have never encountered a company set up so intentionally to dodge accountability and give patients the run-around. Tend's customer service team feels like nothing more than a bunch of smiling people saying they'd be happy to help and then doing absolutely nothing. Will absolutely never go to Tend again after having gone for 3+ years. It was fine and a totally moral practice at first, but I have no idea what went wrong along the way. This past summer, I was told a cavity was "too hard to fill" because it was close to the nerve and a root canal consultation was now needed. I was also berated for not coming in sooner and asked what in my personal life had prevented me from doing so. When I said my wedding, they seemed to suddenly not have any words to say. I followed the gut feeling I had and got a second opinion from another dentist who filled the cavity on the spot- NO ROOT CANAL. It's still doing perfectly fine. Now, at the beginning of 2025, I am receiving the first bill from them from appointments in March and July, totaling almost $900 and due in a month because of their "new billing system"? Mind you, I am also receiving this email after hours on a Friday, leaving me with no option but to attempt to confront it after a whole weekend has passed- thus why I am leaving a review, instead. When I open the itemized bill, it says "insurance not applied", although Tend has my insurance on file, informed me my appointment was covered on site, and let me pay my deductible up front. Now, nearly a year later, I'm being charged "extra" for... who knows what? If something changes upon a phone call on Monday, I may rectify this review to a 2 Star, but it does not change the fact this company has horrible ethical practices and continues to be wholly unorganized. read more

Avoid this place at all costs. I have been trying to rectify an accounting problem after a visit one year ago. I've even coordinated a call with my insurance company and a TEND representative on the same line, and they still have taken months to correct the problem. SCAMMERS!! Paid $5700, took my money and left my treatment undone A year later... I had such high hopes for this place, but my dentist left in the middle of my treatment! They haven't called me back to finish my treatment and I still have the "buttons" on my teeth. They shaved down my teeth, some teeth moved and are still crooked. Dr Shin, my dentist told me my full treatment would end in 2025, but she left and nobody called me to tell me nor did they have notes about my treatment leaving me hanging! A new GENERAL DENTIST saw me and said "you're done" or that I needed jaw surgery for my treatment, yet Dr. Shin, my previous dentist which I didn't know at all she was a general dentist (but she was getting advice from the orthodontist at least) was doing a great job! Now they tried telling me they would start my treatment all over again and I suspect it's some "legal" move they are trying to make after I paid $5700! DECEPTIVE PRICING PRACTICES. I got a dental cleaning done here, during which they suggested I add on a fluoride varnish treatment. The pricing estimate that the receptionist showed me indicated that the varnish was covered by my insurance, which she also confirmed verbally. I returned two more times to get cavities treated. After the third visit, I received an email invoice, and I noticed it was about $70 higher than what I was quoted. I called their customer service and was told it was the cost of the varnish that I had gotten done during my cleaning. I told the rep that I had been told it was covered by my insurance. Also, why was I being charged after my third visit? The fact that I was charged for a treatment that I was told would be covered is extremely deceptive. I was a patient at Tend for several years and was initially very impressed by the facilities, customer service, and overall experience. I was so impressed that I had referred several friends/family members. Unfortunately, the comfortable experience was not enough to make up for the overall poor quality of care I received. I had a filling completed at Tend which had to be redone two other times by other Tend dentists within a span of ~3 years. Each time, the dentist would look at the filling done by their colleagues and determine that they were completed improperly. I was billed for each of these procedures to fix their mistakes. On one occasion, I even received an unexplained additional bill after paying out of pocket at my appointment. It took several conversations with their customer care team and an escalation to resolve. The Tend team did send me a large PR style gift box of dental accessories (toothbrushes, floss holder, a mouthwash decanter) after I complained. I have since switched to a new dental practice and the new dentist noted that the filling I had received at Tend was (still) improperly done and will need to be redone. Despite my many recorded concerns and the fact that I had Tend transfer my patient file to a different practice, I'm still receiving phone calls asking me to book a follow up appointment. Tend is a one stop shop for all your teeth cleaning/straightening needs. The team is welcoming and kind. For your first visit, you are given a new tooth brush and toothpaste. The team then took my X-rays, the doctor examined them and made suggestions on how to maintain my teeth and gum health. Mary was my dental hygienist and she was kind, thoughtful and extremely thorough. She cleaned my teeth very quickly, scheduled me for my next cleaning and I was out the door within an hour. This place is insane. Besides rude Dentists, and insane care, the pricing makes no sense. If you reschedule a visit you are charged late fees. even though in their policy it only mentions cancellations. Now let's talk about the care. I have been there multiple times the past 2 years, when I first started I was told I had multiple cavities and had to get them filled. I started filling them and racked up insane charges, then went on another visit and was told the cavities I had left were gone. The inconsistencies and insane fillings have left my teeth now very unaligned and there has been so much shifting in my mouth within the past year. I was told by one dentist my wisdom teeth didn't need to be removed and upon this last visit I was told that my wisdom teeth are the reason my teeth are shifting. I was so excited to come here and have the best experience ever. I was so hesitant at first. It was either going to be amazing or horrible. I went for my easy braces consultation and that was an interesting experience. They did pair me with a doctor that was about to leave on maternity leave. I was so happy for her and she seemed kind, and knowledgeable. With that being said, I had a history with my orthodontist back in elementary school that went on maternity leave and I saw so many different orthodontists. So based on my person experience i skipped. I returned for a cleaning and spoke with the head of CX and about four agents to confirm insurance information and out of pocket cost. I was told all different answers but I felt confident when I spoke with head of CX. All the CX members are very kind but seem to be lazier over the telephone these past couple of months. You don't get a call back. I was told to speak with someone named Melanie and I have yet to hear back and I have been asking for MONTHS. I reached out via social media, email, phone. What a sincere nightmare. For my first cleaning appointment and I was told my hit of pocket cost was $100 after a male CX manager confirmed that it was $0. Tend allowed me to keep my appointment because of this and this was respectable. The Hygenist was professional but it was a deep cleaning and I was not eligible for polishing. I go for a cleaning every 6 months and never in my life did I need to pay for another appointment to get the polishing. I made an appointment to return but remember, can't get the call back but explained that I know how feedback can be and experiences and I'm willing to give it a try again. I had an appointment this morning before work and was texted one hour before my appointment with the copay that I was not eligible for my cleaning until the 23rd and it is the 1st. The person that made my appointment should have told me this. She went to check on it and NEVER CALLED ME BACK. I spoke with someone new and she canceled my appointment and I have yet to hear back. She said if you don't hear back from Melanie - just reach out to us again. What is that? What a complete nightmare. Oh, and j was offered something complimentary that never came. The issue is a dentist who didn't perform a procedure for a valid reason, but nonetheless charged for a "consultation." Let's start with the initial visit. The hygienist named Sable was EXTREMELY obnoxious, and made me feel very uncomfortable! I still opted NOT to leave a bad review. Second visit: Dr. Parks , very inconveniently made me come into the office on a Saturday morning at 8AM, just to tell me my case is more complex and he will be referring me to a orthodontist within tend . Dr. Parks further explained he is a general dentist, he would not be able to assist me. He also admitted to further confirming my thought: this could have been a phone conversation. So all in all I came in on Saturday at 8AM to make a future appointment , something I could have done online or via phone. (I shifted my children Saturday Schedule just for this appointment , talk about an inconvenience! ) Dr Parks also failed to tell my orthodontist anything about my case, when I came for my THIRD visit. Everyone was clueless. Third visit: the two stars here are for Dr G and the front desk receptionist who was very helpful during my THIRD visit. DR G WAS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE and quickly fixed all the incompetent mistakes committed by DR PARKS . Also very thankful for the patience of the front desk girl who was helpful as well. DO NOT GO - LIED ABOUT CAVITY Interior is beautiful & that's where it ends. Low quality staff & messy admin. My first visit they took X-rays & did a cleaning. I take impeccable care of my teeth, never had a cavity. They took X-rays and said they saw a cavity and would like to fill it but I'd need to make a separate appointment. I made the appointment & went home. I got a call a few weeks later requesting a reschedule, fine. My friends & partner told me I should get a second opinion but trusted Tend. I rescheduled. Day of my filling, I was nervous & left my house to go to the appointment. On my way, the office called to reschedule AGAIN! Messy messy admin. Thank God I did - I told them I wouldn't be back. I made an appointment at Astor Smile, my partner's trusted dentist. They took new X-rays & said they saw no cavity - they weren't even sure where they would say I had one! For anything not 100% routine, the customer experience with tend is terrible. I should note at the start that the actual dental staff, the doctors and hygienists, were fine. My issue is with the administrative side, but it's bad enough to warrant the 2 star review. I only had a single appointment here, and the amount of time I've wasted dealing with Tend from that appointment is insane. Everything is done through their app or through a centralized call center. You cannot call the front desk of an actual office location. Can't select your insurance from the app's drop down menu? 40 minutes on hold. Want to confirm the insurance went through before you go to your appointment? Another 40 minutes. I had a follow-up I needed to schedule that required an oral surgeon. Once again, I couldn't schedule it through the app, and so instead of dealing with the ridiculous hold times, I thought I'd send an email. It would take days for them to respond to scheduling requests. And when they did, it wasn't with times or locations that i had asked for. I ultimately decided to find another dentist to handle the follow-up. In typical fashion, I had to spend more time filling out unnecessary forms and providing unnecessary information to get them to release what I needed to my new dentist. If you're just looking for cleanings maybe Tend makes sense for you. But be warned if you have any questions or anything out of the ordinary, you're in for a painful experience. read more

My appointment was scheduled for 11am, I wasn't seen until almost 2pm. Each time I asked about my scheduled appointment I was given a different answer. All the bells and whistles and Instagram aesthetics don't make up for scamming sales tactics and shitty customer service. I scheduled an appointment. Despite my insurance provider telling me Tend was in service, Tend's own form said otherwise. I called about 5 times over the course of a month to get some confirmation as to what my out of pocket cost would be. Finally, the morning of my appt, I call and they tell me it will be $0. I get there 7 minutes late and the receptionist says "Since you were late we will likely just do the x-rays and exam and schedule your cleaning for later." Because of 7 minutes??? Hygienist says "we moved things around so we'll do your cleaning." She does the xrays and exam. Dentist tells me I have some calculus. Go figure, a lot of people do. And. because of that she recommends something in between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning. So, NOT a deep cleaning, folks. So at that point I'm like "wait, so I'm not getting a cleaning done?" She said no, we will be scheduling you for the special cleaning. The receptionist comes over to explain scheduling the special cleaning. $800. Eight hundred dollars. I just wanted my regular 6 month cleaning that my insurance covers. I told them I would not be scheduling an $800 cleaning, that isn't even a deep cleaning!!! Beware of coming here. In 2021 I had 2 crowns and a root canal done here last year. This morning I had an appointment for a cleaning at 10:15am. I received a text at 6:15am that my appointment would be canceled if I didn't pay for a $720 balance due. First, everything was presented to me before anything was done and I paid up front right after every procedure. Almost $5000 with my insurance. Tend never emailed or mailed me a bill in the months after my procedures and to tell me I owed $720 a year later is ridiculous. This is in no way customer service or legitimate. billing. Came for fillings, was surprised to have them done on a different side of my mouth than I expected. I had an exam with them one week ago (Jan 19th) because of a cracked tooth on my right side, but the fillings were somehow scheduled for the left. No biggie I guess, except I was told at *this* appointment that I need a root canal for the right tooth. And that I need two deep cleanings before I can do any other dental work. (But on the 19th the tooth just needed a filling?) I wasn't told at the last exam that I need this deep cleaning before wisdom tooth removal OR the root canal -- I was told it would only be a filling. (I wouldn't have scheduled the wisdom tooth consult if I knew I needed the deep cleaning before removal lol, I would have scheduled the cleanings first.) I'm not comfortable coming back here and I'll be cancelling my subsequent appointments. I'm disappointed because my last few were perfectly fine. read more

Stole $1200 from me This is a LONG story but bottom line is save your money and literally go ANYWHERE else. I really wanted to like this place because it was convenient and local. Here are some examples of my terrible experiences and really I blame myself for giving them multiple tries. Visit 1- I told staff I was interested in getting a retainer. I currently have a metal permanent retainer but would like a replacement Invisalign retainer. Dentist came in and tried to REMOVE my permanent retainer! When I asked what he was doing he apologized and then said that's what hygienist said I wanted. I then had images taken of my teeth once I explained what I wanted. The dental assistant was doing such a sloppy job and kept having to retake images and was apologizing because she was new and hadn't used the equipment before. I was willing to be patient snd understand but then a week later they asked me to come back because apparently she never saved the images! Visit 2 I went for a routine teeth cleaning. They then tried to take x-rays without asking. I was early in my pregnancy so once I found out what they were doing told them I was snd response was "I think it'll be fine". You are not supposed to get X-rays pregnant Visit 3 And this is by far the worst of all. I stupidly really thought they could make this retainer for me. I went in again and had my images done. They told me it would be $1200 and asked me to sign a "smile alignment form". I told the dental team all about how I used to have an Invisalign retainer but my husband stepped on it and it broke. My sister was getting married so I was trying to just get a retainer before then. I even scheduled a whitening with them because of the wedding. I come back to pick up my retainer AND THEY ORDERED BRACES! They said that's what I asked for. This is a week before my sisters wedding. Who on earth would ever get braces 7 days before they're sisters wedding?! They claimed they explained this but clearly no one did at all. They are refusing to refund me snd if I wanted a retainer I need to give them more money! Last of all, I asked to just let them keep my $1200 if they could just give me a retainer and they said "oh insurance doesn't cover retainers". I asked them to contact my insurance company because I wanted written confirmation my insurance wouldn't cover it. Turns out THEY LIED. My insurance said they would cover it! So I would've given them more money for NO REASON. This place is the biggest scam. Do not waste your time or money and be very careful if you're pregnant! read more

Very bad experience getting a cap replaced. They entice you with availability-- but you're limited to your provider. Then scheduling is impossible. The centralized phone service is awful. read more

Terrible service! I scheduled a routine clean, because I misplaced my insurance card, I called customer service few days ahead to let them know and gave them my info so they can verify insurance before appointment. I was reassured they would call me if there was an issue. I show up to the appointment, only to find out they weren't able to verify, but did not notify me. I then spent the next 20min calling insurance getting the information, which they were able to verify at the end. At that point, I was told because 20min passed, they can no longer accommodate my appointment - split the hour appointment into 2 visits. Even though it was the back office that messed up and didn't notify ahead of time about getting more details. read more

TLDR: I would trust them for extremely basic stuff like an annual exam. For anything more complicated, I'd suggest going to, for lack of a better way of putting it, a grown-up dentist's office. And God help you if you have to get something out of customer service. The standard of care here for extremely basic care is, as far as I can tell, fine. I will note, the dentist here did fail to perform a procedure on me only to refer me to another practitioner who successfully performed the exact same procedure (in the exact same way) the dentist tried. That does make me wonder about their ability to handle more complex procedures. Anyways, the true crux of my problem with this place is less about this particular location and more that the administration/customer service side of Tend is wildly incompetent. In the time I've gone here they have: -Offered cost estimates for procedures that fluctuate depending on who I ask and end up being wildly different from what I actually end up having to pay (to be clear: in the bad way you can get surprised like this). -Bumped me from having a procedure scheduled to having a consultation scheduled (without informing me of the change & after I'd taken time off work). -Required me to reach out multiple times just to get them to offer me extremely basic information they had already promised me they would follow up with me to provide (e.g. getting me preparation instructions prior to a procedure or updates on the status of a prescription). -Offered contradictory explanations of basic administrative procedures (e.g. whose responsibility it is to submit information to my insurance company). -Screwed up in smaller ways. For instance, they routinely reach out to tell me they no longer have my insurance details despite the fact that my profile shows that they do, in fact, have my insurance on file. And they always manage to bill my insurance correctly. They once reached out to confirm an appointment and gave the wrong date in the confirmation. Small issues, sure, but these are not exactly confidence inspiring and they stick out a little more when you put them alongside all the other issues. All in all, I would not recommend. I'm certainly done with this place. Edit: I mean, I honestly don't know that there's a way to "resolve" my issues, but since the reply promising a message goes to all the negative reviews here I'll just note that my inbox is empty. Unfortunately, while it looks beautiful and the start of my visit was positive, it quickly went downhill. The pods are not fully enclosed and the patient in the pod next to me was consistently coughing and there was no effort to separate patients into every other pod. While I was asked about my Netflix choice, it never was actually turned on during my visit. The technology (for x-rays, etc) looked new and nice, but didn't work properly and other staff had to help get it to work, and there was 20 mins of a 60 min appointment wasted on fixing the tech. Also, my tech was definitely less experienced than other staff I have come across. After x-rays, etc. I couldn't get my teeth cleaned, which has never happened in any dentist I've been to before, and have always had similar conditions that require longer cleanings for years at this point. The dentist herself was good but definitely unsold me on many services. 80% of my visit was not up to par. It's akin to putting makeup on a pig. The bells and whistles can't make up for the rest of the experIence. Based off this I wouldn't come here for any major work. Even with a basic cleaning I'd be dubious especially during COVID-19 and their lack of proper protocols. read more
