    Black truffle carbonara

It's my first time coming, wayyyy after they opened! I realized if I came alone at lunchtime, the wait-list probably wasn't as long. I got the opening of the restaurant time wrong though and it was still a half hour wait even for me haha. That's okay! But definitely if you have a party come early or preferably make a reservation. There were two people parties with an 1.25 hr wait by the time I got seated at noon. My server Joshua was so friendly and helpful! He was able to check ingredients for a dish for me quickly (and also unrelatedly gave me some tips as a new grayscale phone user). I am a sucker for seasonal advertisement, so even though it was my first time here I got the Sakura tendon set and the carbonara udon. Joshua helpfully warned me it would be a lot of food since I mentioned it was my first time, but I was determined to try both! (And made sure I'd be able to box up anything I didn't finish.) It took a while for the food to come out (30min?) so I'd be ready for that. Once it came though, wow, the food was gorgeous and delicious. I see why I was warned about the quantity though, I'm not sure I would've even fully finished one of the dishes, let alone both. Not sure how much the Sakura sugar stuff added to my dish so I'd probably skip the extra cost, but the tempura chicken and green bean and oo all of it was so great. The asparagus was a little stringy but also well cooked. The udon was amazing as well, very creamy (though maybe a little on the light side for me). And! Definitely a shout out to the chawanmushi and the pickled yuzu cabbage sides, they were so good. I'd gotten the $4 add on for the rice- I'm not sure I'd do it again. It wasn't bad, but I don't think I needed it. I took home 80% of the udon, almost all the rice, and half the tempura. Eyes were much bigger than my stomach today haha.

Akiaji "taste of autumn" tendon set (January 2026)

favorite items tried: enoki mushroom tempura from akiaji tendon set, and the sweet potato creme brûlée. visited in january 2026 for my partner's birthday and it was extremely busy on a weekday night (they had to turn away walk ins). they were able to seat us within 15 min of our reservation time. small but cozy place. our group ordered a lot of food and there wasn't enough room on the table, plus we got a comment from the waiter that we had ordered more than enough.

Really great tempura bowls, clean and nice atmosphere, and friendly service! I got the Sashimi Aimori Tendon set. The tempura was GREAT but the actual sashimi was slightly below average. The fish tasted dry and not very fresh. Everything else was amazing and I'd love to return and try their tempura focused bowls.

Tempura was soggy and fish has no sauce or seasoning

I've been here 3 times and each time it's the same result, I leave feeling that I should've spent my money elsewhere. For a place who specializes in tempura, I would expect the batter to be perfectly light, crispy, and warm. But today, it was room temp and soggy. Usually I don't mind eating fish by itself, but I don't think the quality is high enough to stand on its own to eat with just rice here. It would be nice to have some kind of sauce to make it more flavorful. Outside of the tempura sauce, everything was bland afterwards. The salmon carpaccio slices were thick but I think slicing it up thinner with more slices on the plate so that each piece of salmon can soak up more of the flavor would be better. I wanted to give this place the benefit of the doubt because it's so popular. But after 3 attempts, I've concluded food is just so-so and service is standard. Parking lot is small, better to park across the street.

Was super excited to try Tendon for the first time since I've heard great things, but was a little disappointed Food: I had Sashimi Aimori Tendon Set - the portion was quite large and came with a good variety of fish and tempura. The most disappointing part was that our whole table's tempura was a little floppy/soggy/mushy. The fish was decent quality, but came with no additional sauces. We also tried the endive salmon carpaccio which didn't hit home for us. Everything on the plate was so large that you couldn't really get a full bite of all the flavors. I also felt the endive and turnip made the taste a little too overwhelmingly bitter. Price: I would say the tendon sets are a good value considering you're getting tempura, sashimi, and sides Service/Ambiance: The staff here was kind, we didn't have a reservation and walked in at 4:55 (they reopen at 5 but were letting in tables early) so we didn't have to wait. The ambiance is modern and bright.

    Chicken Katsu Curry with Omurice

Everyone and their mom insisted that we had to try Tendon Kohaku! Everyone and their mom were right. Tendon Kohaku is known for their stunning tempura sets, but their menu goes way beyond that. Even though I have personally never been to Japan, I think this culinary experience brought me the closest to that. We got the Traditional Tendon Set, Black Truffle Grilled Steak Don, and Chicken Katsu Curry with Omurice. Every single dish was an absolute hit. It was love at first bite and every single bite after that. The tempura was so perfectly cooked. The steak was some of the most tender meat I've ever had. The curry was probably the best Japanese curry of my life. Each set was served with Hokkaido-grown short grain white rice, chawanmushi (egg custard), cabbage pickles, and miso soup. We were mind blown! From now on, everyone and their mom who comes to town will be taken here haha.

    Matcha strawberry.
    Bo P.

This review is strictly for the matcha strawberry drink, which I order at least 3x a week, every week. My biggest gripe is that it's never consistent. The amount of matcha, strawberry, ice, and milk all depends on who's making it. Tendon would really benefit from having a standard on how their employees make their drinks. It's the same case with the hojicha strawberry drink as well. Today's is the most disappointing. If you look at my picture, this drink is just colored milk. Very little matcha, very little strawberry. I paid $8 for a cup of milk. And the drink was less than usual; barely at the lid's level. Speaking of lid, please get rid of the dome covers. Giving it an extra star because their matcha is actually fantastic -- that is, when they put enough of it.

I'll be honest, I went in skeptical. Hype-driven spots recommended by food influencers have burned me too many times. This one caught me completely off guard. The quality here holds up to what I had in Japan recently. The meat was cooked perfectly and the sauce had great balance. I also loved how they package it, the egg and the rice/meat are separated so nothing gets soggy. Really thoughtful. The shrimp tempura had a really pleasant sweetness to it. I picked it up at the window and ate it in my hotel literally 5 minutes away and it was still perfect. One weird thing though: I asked for a small side of sauce to dip the tempura and they had to go check and came back saying they couldn't accommodate it. Such an odd thing to say no to. Service at the pickup window was friendly otherwise. Can't wait to come back and work through the rest of the menu

Made reservations a month in advance to avoid the usual 2-2.5 hour weekend dinner wait, so we came in with pretty high expectations based on all the hype. Unfortunately, the experience ended up being fairly mixed overall. Food is just okay but restroom/restaurant cleanliness and condition left much to be desired. The tempura itself was slightly above average. The batter had a nice crispy exterior, but several pieces were a tad under-fried and mushy inside. The tempura chicken breast in particular was a disappointment. The interior was mostly a mushy mess and no one at our table wanted to finish it. We also tried the mentaiko udon, which arrived lukewarm. The flavors were much more subtle and didn't really stand out. Would recommend sticking to the tempura-focused dishes instead. Oddly, the desserts ended up being more enjoyable than the main meal itself. What disappointed us most, though, was the overall ambiance and cleanliness of the restaurant. We were seated in the separated back room with the booths, which should have felt more intimate and comfortable, but the space felt quite worn down. The benches were visibly damaged with stains and worn spots, the walls had marks all over them, and there were noticeable sauce splatters on the artwork next to our table. The bathrooms were also poorly maintained, especially for a restaurant trying to project a more elevated dining experience. Not sure if it was because of the Memorial Day weekend rush, but the gender-neutral restrooms were neglected with dusty plants, food stains around the sink area that looked like they needed a deep clean, and generally banged-up walls and fixtures. Overall, the upkeep felt more like what you'd expect from a no-frills restaurant rather than a place with this level of hype and wait times. Overall, not a bad meal, but definitely not one that lived up to the expectations created by the long waits and rave reviews.

I've been wanting to try this place for 2 years now, and was very sad when there was a 2 hour wait, and so we didn't go. :( we did grab desserts though -- the sweet potato crème brûlée was very yummy!

The food is good, tempura and battered stuff is great albeit a bit greasy. It's a hidden grease that kind of shows up a few bites after. It's a memory that always sticks with me after every meal here, "that was greasier then it looked." Food quality is also good, it's what keeps us coming back whole greasy. Food is also clean, restaurant clean, bright, good vibe. This recent visit was reserved online as a "business meeting" and we were seated in the rear of restaurant, a whole separate section and more fitting to a business meeting. Everything really is 4 star for me when it comes to food here but the service this time, especially for business, was a bit too intrusive and way too loud. We were closest to the area where dishes were unloaded after clearing from a table and the server just clanged away with zero sensitivity that we sat only a few feet away. Maybe it was on purpose since this is a high volume restaurant and he wanted to turn tables? I wouldn't be surprised if it was. But it was a turnoff. Turnoff like the bit of greasy feeling after you eat here. Will rethink returning as often as previously because of this last visit.

Food Quality: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Cleanliness: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Grea first experience at Tendon Kohaku! This place definitely lives up to the hype and the food was amazing. I ordered the Beef Steak Aimori Tendon Set, Houjicha latte and the sweet potato crème brulee. Everything was so well seasoned and so fast to be served to our table. A was our server and did a fantastic job taking care of us. Highly recommended for anyone to give this a try!

    Braised Beef Curry Udon
    Anh T.

Loved the quality of the food in this place! On a weekend evening, my friends and joined the waitlist during peak time and waited more than an hour before being seated. I tried their braised beef curry udon, which camed with a steamed egg that was super comforting and flavorful and silky. The curry itself was rich and savory, and the udon had a nice chewy texture and was a decent portion size. My friends ordered a steak dish, and I thought they steak was delicious and juicy when they let me sample a small portion. We shared the sweet potato creme brulee for dessert, which was unique and a standout. It was creamy with a subtle sweetness from the sweet potato, and the caramelized top added a nice contrast. Satisfying meal and would love to come back to try some other items from their extensive menu!

Tendon Kohaku Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Tendon Kohaku

    Is there parking?

Yes, limited/small parking lot, but with street parking.

For the party of 10 including a baby under 3, do they accept a reservation online? After you order food, how long will it take for the food come out?

I would think so if it's available. I'm not the person who made the reservation for our group of 6

When's the best day and time to go if I want to avoid a long wait? Also how long in advance can they take reservations? Can I do a party of 2-3 for the next day?

I feel like opening is a good time on weekdays, but it is hard to predict. You could go early and add yourself to the waitlist, but all members have to be present to be seated

The reservation page does not accept any reservation for months. Is it already closed for months out?

They don't take reservations for groups smaller than 5

What time do they open the waitlist in the morning? I want to get seated at the first round when they open at 11am?

If you show up at 10:30 am, you will be able to get seated.

For a party of one, would it still be a long wait time, or would it be easier to get in?

Easier. You'll still get in the queue but the bar seating will move you up the queue faster.

    Can we make the reservation?

Yes, reservations are available if you google search. There is a "reserve a table option"

    Do they do takeout orders?

They only do take out drinks and desserts. No take out real food

Are there gluten-free items on the menu?

Some of their appetizers, like the salmon carpaccio, are GF. Desserts are also GF. Unfortunately, a lot of Japanese curry roux and udon noodles have wheat in them, so those dishes might not be GF, but you can always ask the staff to confirm

How does their waitlist work? Do you have to physically wait outside the restaurant for your name to be called or do they have a system where they can text you when your table is about ready?

You physically wait outside the restaurant when (or before) they open, and you will be added to the waitlist in-person. Then, you can track your waitlist position online and come back to the restaurant when your table is ready.

    Do they accept reservations?

I went the other day, and they told me that you can make reservations for a party of 5+!

Has the hype died down yet such that it's not crazy all evening?

My friend was there a few days ago and it was still pretty busy. I recommend calling ahead to get an estimated wait time!

The quality of the meat and vegetables, in my opinion, was much higher compared to those places where you're able to get multiple rounds of meat or select your own vegetables/sides. The broth (I had kombu) was pretty light, so it wasn't the best. The service was pretty friendly and the only fault to them was they didn't come around to refill our pots with hot water. I enjoyed dinner here and would definitely come back again. The quality of the food, the calm restaurant atmosphere, and the polite staff made it an enjoyable experience.

I also liked how straightforward everything was. It's mostly self-serve with the kiosk, which makes ordering quick and easy, but the staff are still around and super helpful if you need anything. The food does take a little time to come out, but it's clearly made fresh so it's worth the wait. The environment is clean, organized, and has a chill, no-frills vibe. It's not super fancy, but it's comfortable and perfect for a casual meal. It can get a bit busy and seating is somewhat limited during peak hours, but that just shows how popular it is. Overall, great spot if you want high-quality sushi without spending a ton. Definitely a place I'd come back to.

I ordered online and I wish it was a little clearer but I watched a chirashi bowl , instead I ended up with salmon only bowl with hotate upgrade and ikiro. I also got a couple of toro nigiri and hama rice dish. The fish was pretty good for the price. It was fresh, firm and taste good. The hama was dry and almost burned so I didn't care much. They didn't use sushi rice and just plain rice. I asked that my chirashi bowl comes with no rice but there was rice They were pretty busy when I was there so it's probably better if you order takeout. It was crowded and feels claustrophobic. Service was ok, they had my food ready earlier than expected and that was nice.
