TJ has comparable prices to some iffier places. I have tried two things here but forgot to take a picture the first time. The first time I tried their teriyaki chicken and the second time their hibachi chicken. They both have very good flavor and a good amount of food for a decent price. I enjoy this hibachi place a lot. The only reason they don't have 5 stars is the service isn't the most pleasant. They aren't like down right rude, but they aren't very nice either. I suppose maybe they are just quick and direct but it never feels that great ordering/picking up with them. I eat at this place all the time. It is what it is: carry-out hibachi, with a fair few tables both indoor and outdoors. It mostly seems to cater to a lunch crowd and dinner takeout. Since the pandemic you've been able to order directly from the computers in the front, but I think they'll also take an order personally if you wave them over. Anyway it's quick, the portions are very generous for the price, and it's pretty well-executed grilled meat and veggies with rice or noodles. I would not recommend the sushi, and the dumplings and what not aren't great either, but that's really not what this place is about. We enjoyed a late Friday night dinner. At the counter we Ordered hibachi steak (hubby), chicken (me) and teriyaki scallops (teenaged son). Self-service soda fountain and the funky "instant" ice tea machine, which doesn't taste good to me. Two meals came out first, delivered to our table. The third meal was delivered over five minutes later. Honey child and I thought our meals were great. He smothered his in the yum yum sauce (mayo based). I had the lower fat version of sauce--the ginger. Entrees Come packed with veggies and What they called fried rice, I call steamed white rice with soy sauce. Wish there was a brown rice option. Hubby felt his steak was over cooked, it was served well done. For the price, less than $10 an entree it is well worth the price. Glad it's conveniently located in our neighborhood. Good spot for a quick takeout lunch -- they get the food ready in mere minutes! It's a pretty good amount of food for $10ish. Everything is pretty good, though not super memorable. It's a small spot with just a couple of tables -- most people get takeout, as you should. I just got the hibachi vegetables, which were pretty good; the rice was nice and tender and the vegetables included broccoli, zucchini and mushrooms. I personally like the ginger sauce. This place is close to my house and I love Asian food, so I just had to try it! I've been here twice now and I'm sure I'll keep coming back. I've gotten the chicken hibachi and the chicken teriyaki entrees, one with the white sauce and the other with the ginger sauce (you can choose either sauce but if you don't specify, they'll give you the white sauce). Both times, the entrees were freshly made and tasty. It was a lot of food too -- fried rice, chicken, and a mix of vegetables rounded out a hearty meal. When it comes to the sauces, both were good but I preferred the ginger sauce. It's really a matter of preference since they're so different. The white sauce is creamy while the ginger sauce is just more of a classic liquid sauce. It's by no means watery though! The service was super friendly and quick both times I've gone, which is always awesome. This place doesn't serve the best hibachi of your life, but it's fast, inexpensive, and satisfies a craving for Asian food. Will definitely return! read more

Counter serve, sorta-fast food hibachi place. They have a number of locations across the Triangle. For inexpensive food for the cheap, you could certainly do worse than Tenko Japan. For the price, their portion is good and the taste is agreeable. The restaurant itself is small, so take-out is probably the way to go. I've always gotten one of their combos that come with meat or seafood, vegetables and rice. You can substitute some of the rice for more veggies, or pay extra for more meat. Do note that the yellow "mustard" sauce packet they give is more like a horse radish sauce; that is to say it has a strong taste. read more

The only place I will ever get hibachi from here on out! I love this hole in the wall so much that it's now a weekly spot for me and my boyfriend. Their hibachi is delicious. I love their flavoring- never too salty or bland! They cook it just right. Their steak has never been tough and the scallops have always been juicy~ Their yummi chicken is like a super crispy General tsos! Loved it as well. But warning, because the yummi chicken is a deep fried dish, it may take a bit longer to come out. Their crab rangoons came out so hot and tasty! For fast Japanese food it's not bad it's just not that good either. I was looking for something healthy, quick, and cheap and thought since this place is close by why not give them a shot. I didn't try any of the hibachi items and that seems to be what is the most popular here. They have a great selection to order from on their menu and the prices are really decent. They have a couple of sushi rolls on the menu and that was what I was in the mood for even though I was a little hesitant. I ordered the salmon and avocado roll it was small but tasted fresh and made to order. Unlike sushi sitting out in the grocery store for $5 I would definitely order this roll again if I was on the run. I also ordered a ginger salad for $3 this was a huge portion and their ginger dressing is pretty good not that creamy generic version. The salad looked a little old though and was pre-made but was ok. I dined in they brought me my food but there was no silverware or soy sauce - you have to go get that stuff yourself. I don't think you should request tips if you are a self serve restaurant. Again if you are looking for something quick and don't want the usual fast food options or subs then this is a decent option in the area. read more

This place is kind of tucked away off of Edwards mill road. The location itself is pretty small and doesn't have a lot of seating. I think people usually get their orders for pick up. I ordered the hibachi chicken and shrimp. The rice and shrimp and veggies were good but the chicken was far too dry. My partner had the teriyaki and he said it was pretty standard. I also did feel like they were kind of stingy on the meat? Could just be my American ways. I also ordered the spring rolls and they tasted a lot like oil. For what it is, I'd have to give it 4 stars. We went here around 6 on a Sunday and there wasn't many people sitting inside, but there were a lot of people doing take out. I got hibachi chicken and the two other people I went with got hibachi steak and hibachi shrimp, so we pretty much covered everything. I've been here a few times and have gotten the Hibachi Chicken and Shrimp and the sushi. The cashiers are always very sweet. I think the sushi is a great deal if you don't want to go to a sit-down sushi place. The price are inexpensive and I've always seen them make it to order. The Hibachi is good, but the ratio of meat to rice is way disproportionate , and not in the carnivore's favor. Their "white sauce" is not really white and has a different flavor than any that I've had before. Overall the flavor is okay. Given that it's fast food Japanese and the amount of food they give, I find it to be overpriced. I come here when I am close and don't feel like driving 2 more miles to Japan Express on Glenwood (Which I think taste better and it's a better value). read more

Get in the car and noticed the spring rolls arent there. have to go BACK in to get that, oh 6 more minutes for that. Any place thats supposed to be FAST should make you wait close to 30 minutes to get your meal. Not worth the headache of how poorly this place is run. This place is pretty awful. I had the steak hibachi, and we got fried calamari and crab Rangoon appetizers. Everything about the hibachi was bad. The steak was incredibly dry and bland, the vegetables were also bland and over cooked. The rice--which is the only part of the dish they were generous with--tasted old and rubbery, and the shrimp/white sauce was truly awful. The calamari was very mediocre and oddly sweet, and the crab Rangoon were hands down the worst I've ever had. There was almost no filling in them, and what was there had a bizarre, gluteny-flour flavor to them that reminded me of an undercooked roux. Second the menu is not clear on what all is included. There is writing on a whiteboard that says free spring roll and tea, but nothing was offered. Tenko Japan is a new restaurant located across the street from the Old Raleigh Village shopping center, with a relatively inexpensive Americanized-Japanese menu. I ordered the vegetable bowl ($4.50) with a side order of dumplings ($3.00), which were both tasty and fast. I'm reluctant to call Tenkojapan a fast food restaurant, but it's essentially like a fast-food version of Kanki. Similar to Sarku Japanese in the Crabtree Valley Mall food court, but with a slightly higher price and significantly better quality and variety. I'm not sure how long they've been open, but they seem to handle the stress of the lunch crowd easily as our meals were ready without hiccup and very quickly. They also have a nice and fully functional website available already, and the interior of the restaurant is both well lit and clean. I give Tenko Japan 4 stars for lunch because I think it's a great spot to grab a quick meal with good quality food, but I probably wouldn't come here for dinner unless I was specifically looking for quick and cheap. read more

The chicken, while a tad more flavorful and tender than some other places, to me was dry and suffered from a lack of sauce. The vegetables and rice were ok. Some damn good hibachi! I came here with a friend on the whim, No plans to try this place, just sort of ran into it after a long day of moving into an apartment! I really wasn't expecting much, but boy was I wrong. I ordered the Hibachi chicken and steak plate. Of course hurricane sandy was passing by and the place was empty, so I got my food pretty quickly. The steak was juicy and tender, the chicken was actual white meat chicken. Most Asian restaurants give you all these fatty pieces of chicken, but this place had lean meaty chicken. They include fried rice and some sauteed veggies on the side, both were delicious. You can also substitute your rice for noodles, extra charge of course. Over all, I enjoyed this place a lot, and will definitely recommend it to others. There's a whole menu to choose from and I'm sure their other offering are tasty as well. read more

I ate at Tenko the first day they were open (8/31/11) and altho the food was delicious, they had not gotten into they're groove yet. I went back today and was solidly impressed. I ordered the Teriyaki chicken and my husband ordered the Teriyaki shrimp & chicken. Both orders took about ~7 minutes, from order to table (as they actually bring the food to you). My chicken and his shrimp were cooked perfectly. The teriyaki sauce is spiced just right, not too sweet. The veggies were cooked just till right before they lost that little crunch. The rice was fresh and not overly sticky. Overall, for a 'fast food' Japanese place, this place is perfect. The staff is pleasant, the dining room clean and the food fresh. I work close, so I would probably not come here for dinner unless I was close. But for lunch, it's on the menu. read more

I have been a frequent visitor through the years. The food is always good. The last couple of times I have been there, the food has been good as always, but the restaurant has not been up to the cleanliness I have come to expect due having been there so much. As for food, the hibachi is always cooked appropriately and the selection is strong. I love that they offer free wifi and limited outdoor seating. All in all, I would recommend. I ordered a chicken bowl that usually only has broccoli and mushroom..I asked for no mushroom and to add some zucchini and onion. Which they did, but the zucchini tasted like chemicals had been sprayed on them so I picked them out. I also ordered the spring rolls..mine had a bit of a spice in it, my coworker ate one and tasted no spice at all in theirs. Can't comment on their hibachi, but their sushi wasn't that good--or that cheap. I've seen much better sushi lunch specials (here, two small sushi rolls runs you $7-9, about the same than some sushi lunch specials with twice as much food). The rolls are 6 pieces per unit--about the size of standard grocery store rolls and smaller than what you get at specialty sushi restaurants. Although they do make the sushi fresh (I waited as mine was being made), the quality of the fish isn't that good (the spicy tuna wasn't actual pieces of tuna, it was some kind of thick paste). The california roll didn't really stick together that well. It serves me right for trying the sushi at a fast-casual hibachi place. On the plus side, they were really nice and it came out fast. But, in the take out bag they didn't include shopsticks or soy sauce! I was a little surprised. I may go back to try their hibachi and update my review since I work nearby. The inside was plain, and there was some nice seating outside (but like everywhere else in suburban Raleigh, the nice patio overlooks the parking lot). read more

Tenko has great, cheap hibachi and teriyaki stir fry. I think this is the best quality Japanese food at this price point in Raleigh. If you're trying to lower the sodium content, they will cook your food without soy sauce upon request, and the chicken still comes out juicy! They've recently started charging for extra sauce, so don't get crazy with it. read more
