Busy, casual Mexican spot just off Davis. We got there at around 6:30 on a Sunday and it was pretty quiet, but within an hour the line was literally out the door. While the place doesn't feel cramped, it's not enormous, so anticipate having to wait to get a table if you come at peak hours and are looking to eat in. Everyone in my group ordered a torta, and they were delicious (albeit very messy!) I can't speak for theirs, but the torta pollo asada was the perfect combination of flavors and textures (grilled chicken, melted cheese, tomato, onion, avocado, etc), and the jalapeños and chipotle mayo gave it a nice kick. Everything is made to order right in front of you, so it can take a little while to get your food, but the wait is worth it. In addition to serving beer and sangria, they offer numerous flavors of Jarritos, horchata, and (my personal favorite) Coca Cola from Mexico made with real sugar. The difference in taste from American Coke (also available) is almost unbelievable. One thing I'd note here - I don't eat pork, and, unsurprisingly, this limited the menu for me as a significant number of offerings use chorizo, carnitas, or chicharron as the protein. That said, I had plenty of options to choose from and no category of dishes on the menu was fully eliminated. This place is as authentic as it gets! I came here on a Friday night and it was super busy but don't let the line fool you - the workers are very fast and work very quickly to get everyone's orders in. I think the best thing to order here is a torta. It's like a big greasy and very delicious Mexican sandwich. My friends ordered the steak one and it was very flavorful. They also have a build your own burrito option where you place your order just like you would at Chipotle. The burrito is huge so I would recommend that if you're very hungry. They also have free water which is always great! Overall, I thought this was some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. I've been hearing great things about Tenoch for ages so I was super excited to finally try it at the Somerville location! Tortas are kind of their signature, but I was craving a burrito. The setup is pretty similar to Anna's where they steam the tortilla and then fill it with toppings to your preference. You can get a regular burrito for about $6.50 or one of their "burritos de la casa" with a special combination of fillings for $8. I had the adobado burrito with pork in guajillo sauce and fried plantains. It was tasty, although the plantains made it almost more sweet than savory. The beans and rice could have had a little more flavor. (They're probably vegetarian.) I think my burrito was supposed to come with guacamole but they left it out :( I also tried the chicharron burrito and the carne con queso burrito. The carne con queso is insane--they throw a handful of cheese on a griddle, add some carne asada on top, and let it cook for a few seconds until it's golden brown on the outside and gooey on the inside. Then they throw that beautiful mess into a burrito or torta. Definitely a must for cheese lovers! The chicharron was awesome too--very crunchy and full of pork flavor! Unfortunately the whole ordering and paying process was very disorganized, and the employees were curt and rude. But I came during the Honk festival, so I'll write it off to a busy day this time. Anna's Taqueria around the corner will probably remain my go-to place for a simple burrito, but I can't wait to try more of the exciting menu options here. Tenoch seemed like it would be the tastiest Mexican place in Boston, at least according to the Yelp reviews. However, I wasn't blown away. I actually think La Victoria Taqueria has better pastor tortas. Thumbs up for Tenoch having slices of pineapple in the sandwich, but the al pastor meat was dry and lackluster. It just tasted like overcooked, shredded pork loin drenched in the oily, saucy marinade. The al pastor I'm used to (maybe I'm just spoiled after living in California 20+ years) is tender and moist. If you're coming here for the first time, I'd recommend choosing another protein. read more

Came here after hearing great things about their north end location, but I was disappointed. I got the carnitas, asada, and pescado tacos to go. I realize food is hardly ever as good when taken to go, but my tacos were sitting in a pool of grease (as in when I went to pick up a taco, grease was literally dripping everywhere). I'm all for greasy food, but this wasn't it and it made the entire meal unappetizing and kind of gross honestly. Grease aside, the pescado taco was pretty good taste-wise. I normally love carnitas and asada tacos, but the ones I got had dry/overcooked meat, didn't taste very fresh, and could use a bit more flavor. Based off this experience, I wouldn't return as there are other authentic taco places in the area that I enjoy much more. Okay I'm biased since I live less than a block away and end up going here a lot, but this place rocks. It's one of those great places to eat where you can close your eyes and throw a dart at the menu and you are guaranteed to hit something good. Unless you suck at throwing darts, I guess. Tortas are their specialty. I highly recommend the Carne torta. They put the beef inside a cheese blanket and grill it until the cheese is nice and brown before putting it on the sandwich. Absolutely divine. The burritos are just as good as the tortas. And then you have their tacos which is the only thing my girlfriend gets from here because they're so darn good she doesn't feel inclined to branch out. This place replaced the old M3, which I was a huge fan of, and initially, when I saw a Mexican place was moving into this spot, I was crotchety. "Another Mexican Place...? Can we not?" I said out loud to myself... Stopped in here this past weekend, and I put my foot right into my mouth. This place is KILLER! and not only that, it just seems to fit the mold of the old M3 quite well with how the place was set up. My girlfriend and I stopped in and enjoyed the Pork Tacos with Pineapple, Fish Tacos w/ Chips & Salsa. Was very filling and really satisfying. The Corn Tortillas really made the dish. I do have ONE small critique and I hope the management here see's it! The fish tacos fall a bit bland: What made the Pork tacos stand out was that little bit of sweet from the pineapple, which is missing from the Fish ones. All you guys would need to do is make a sweet pickled cabbage instead of just lettuce and cabbage thrown on raw. It would make those tacos REALLY pop. Well be back next time we come into town. On a weekday at prime meal time there was a long line. Be prepared to wait but worth it. Tortas are a traditional Mexican sandwich served with sauce and cheese. Try the namesake Tenoch with both carnitas and ham and a zesty chipotle mayo. The tacos are served open face with many combinations to chose from. Pastor is a standard with cubed pork and pineapple. Platos Mexicanos are always a favorite with steamy rice, tender black beans, pico de gallo salsa with lots of cilantro, the filling of your choice, and optional extra sides such as a dollop of sour cream. I ordered a cheese quesadilla for my kid; was fine for a kid's menu item but would not order for an adult. Last night was my third time at Tenoch's Somerville location. I've previously been to their Medford location many times. Most everything I've tried at Tenoch is delicious. I'm a big fan of their tortas (particularly Al Pastor, which contains pineapple) and their burritos. I was craving an adobado burrito (pulled pork with fried plantains). When I got up to the front of the line to order, I was informed they were out of plantains. I ordered the adobado anyway, which was still delicious, although I feel like fried plantains would have given it a whole new depth of flavor. Food at Tenoch is generally a good value (my husband and I both ate for under $20). Although I love the food here, I have to take away a star from this location due to 1) constant long lines, which do not move quickly or efficiently, 2) constantly being out of ingredients (the first two times I came, they were out of guacamole (?!?!), and 3) the layout of the restaurant makes the seating tight. The line to order snakes around the restaurant, causing those waiting to basically be brushing up against diners sitting down and trying to eat their meal. Check out the Medford location instead, which has easier parking, shorter lines, and more tables. read more

Tried some tacos here tonight and was very happy. We did take-out and they were prepared immediately! I choose the queso and chorizo, adobo, and al pastor. The chorizo was wonderful and had a heaping river of melty cheese on top. Adobo was also delicious, lots of flavor and I definitely like my tacos saucier so it was a great pick. The al pastor was my least favorite because the meat was on the drier side, but it was still pretty damn good. The tacos are definitely kind of small. I will admit I was very hungry but I could have easily downed at least one more. I believe they were 3.75 each which I'd say is about average. First timers with my girlfriend, and the food was great! We both got the JARRITOS MANGO soda (cluttttch and fresh and almost orange soda-like with a mango twist) I got the RES TORTA (7.75) - shredded beef, melted cheese, cilantro, jalapeños. Pretty good sized sandwich loaded with cheesy goodness! They jalapeños added an awesome kick and spice to the sandwich. Super saucy (but I like dat) so it gets messy! She got the PESCADO TACO (3.50) - fish taco and PASTOR TACO (3.25) - pork and pineapple. She liked the PESCADO TACO better because the fish was tender, just the right amount of sauce. The PASTOR TACO was a bit dry. Vibes were good, big windows, and plenty of 2-4 person tables that you can combine to fit more. Tenoch is a comfortable option straddling the bridge between authentic Mexican food and fast casual. I love that this restaurant goes beyond the standard burrito/taco/bowl menu that I've come to expect at Mexican style restaurants. The restaurant has a bright and colorful dining area, but I got takeout. Tortas, which are small Mexican sub sandwiches, seem to be Tenoch's specialty, so I went for the veggie tortas. The French bread roll was piled with roasted peppers, onions, and zucchini, black bean paste, a sriracha/mayo type sauce, fresh cheese, and several other sauces and toppings which I can't really describe, but added an intense and complex flavor. The tortas are assembled, then heated briefly on a buttered grill, so the bread gets nice and crispy and the cheesy oozes. The sandwich was a decent size and I couldn't finish the whole thing, but if you have a big appetite, you might want to add a side of chips to round out your meal. My companion got a burrito, which was pretty hefty. The folks who work here are experts at preparing this food - you can tell from the way perfectly stuff and wrap the burritos and sandwiches! For me, the main downside to Tenoch is that the restaurant is not very accessible for vegetarians. The grilled veggies are the only non-meat filling option for the tacos, burritos, and tortas, while there were at least 5 or 6 different kinds of meat fillings. I also noticed that the employees were a little careless about keeping ingredients separate in the sandwich prep area and pieces of meat were falling from their tongs into other filling containers. The vegetarian fillings are all located together at one end of the prep area to avoid this issue, but keep an eye on what's going into your food if ingesting meat is a dietary concern for you. For vegans, Tenoch is definitely not a good bet - cheese seems to be a crucial part of almost everything. read more

If I could give this place 3 1/2 stars I would. I am on a quest to find great Mexican food here in MA, so I thought we would start with this one. The food is tasty. I got the Adobada Torta and the person with me got the Campechana. The sauce on both were quite tasty and the pork tender. The price is one of the downsides to this place. It is a high price point for this type Mexican food. Another downside (and maybe a red flag) is that their hot sauce is not very spicy. Any really good Mexican restaurant needs to have at least one good hot sauce... but maybe that's just my opinion. I love Tenoch! I've been a loyal customer for about 4 years now (at the Medford and Somerville locations; have yet to make it to the Boston one) and Tenoch has really become a dependable favorite. Both spaces are cozy, clean, and welcoming and the service is always fast and pleasant. What's good? Everything! The enchilada plate ($6.95) and burritos ($6.50) are delicious and filling. The tacos ($3.00) are top notch and, of course, the tortas -for which Tenoch is known- are out of this world. It really doesn't matter which one you try... Every single torta knocks flavor, filling, and fresh ingredients out of the park. That said, I am a particular fan of the Torta Campechana (telera bread, carnitas, chorizo, chipotle mayo, beans, onions, tomatoes, avocado, oaxaca cheese) which has spicy personality, but not so much that little ol' me can't handle it. I guarantee you will savor every last zesty, cheesy, smooth bite. Oh! Almost forgot the Horchata.. YUM, this rice milk concoction is the perfect partner for a fiery Mexican meal. I have been here multiple times since I've moved to Boston and the food here is ALWAYS DELICIOUS and CHEAP. The employees are really nice and they definitely don't skimp on portions. The burritos are gigantic and extremely filling and they have various Mexican specialties that they run out of as well as tacos and tortas. Definitely try many of the tortas as they are crispy pressed sandwiches with your filling of choice. I've had those and the burritos and have never had a negative experience. Only complaint is that sometimes the fillings can be quite salty but the rest of the toppings cut into it (as long as you don't eat a giant clump of chorizo).
